    You know what I like about your videos the most? The fact, that you constantly remind us to 'not do anything by default'. It's the greatest piece of advice and it has to be reiterated every now and then, because it's the little thing most of us forget about. You've tought me to always have an open mind and don't discard any solutions just because. Big thank you for that!

    That's why i have my MIX bus before MASTER fader(main output). All effects on MIX apply to, you guessed it, the mix. And i run both my mix and my reference tracks through MASTER fader. So, on the MIX bus plugins are pre-fader. For mastering session i just go Project on Studio One, it's nifty.
    Also i use way too many busses, like all kick, all snare, all vocal harmony doubles etc. But i like it this way, it creates glue by applying same effects on multiple tracks and speeds up my process. Thanks for the vid, David!

    Wow, man. Thank you sooooooo much for this tip. And yes, I use fader rides on the master a lot, but this tip gives me the option of not loosing my Master EQs and compression (not that long ago I discovered that this was happening in my mixes). Again, thanks for sharing!!

    Andy, I had not thought of automating AFTER the 2/mix bus compressor. It really helped improve the impact of the ending of a "hard rock" track I was mixing. Keep em coming.. Thanks! Tom

    Your videos are so helpful! You really explain the theory and reasons behind your technique. I love Pesando’s Place But it seems like Dave just mostly shows you which plugins he uses and doesn’t explain the theory behind what he’s doing as well.

    Even safer would be to automate the volume down -1.5 db, post the compressor, at the opposite parts of the song that you arent trying to make loud. That will create the illusion that the loud part when up 1.5 w/o running the risk of clipping(assuming somebody is eventually going to try this during the mastering stage when everything is super loud and already squashed and limited).

      *****
      Youre right and I totally agree. I just wanted to share that in case somebody also wants to try this in the mastering stage(especially if mastering a whole album). My mind has been in both realms and this technique seems useful especially though its more proper to be done in the mix stage for sure. Thanks.

    Killer tips, all your vids are sensible and helpful. In your comments here you mention " if you gain stage properly...etc."
    Can you describe responsible gain staging on a future vid? Am I doing it wrong (or too lazy) if I just use the trim tool at the master fader?

      ***** 10-4, thanks as always. I guess what confuses me is that different people call the master fader different things. Master fader/2 bus... Master fader/2 bus... got it. :)

  • @ABS_AD77

    That's a nice one but how about Having your mix bus before the master fader and the Mix bus would feed into the Master fader, and have all your master track plugins on your Mix bus instead and ride your Master fader. Does that have the same effect, or am I confused?

    great video. What if I don´t master my mix myself but give it to mastering, I obviously don´t have control over this right?

  • @51L1C3
    @51L1C3 6 лет назад

    Thanks for the video! I was just wondernig... Doesn't the "after the compressor" automation simply turn into hitting harder the clipper or limiter at the mastering stage, so that the clearly noticable effect achievied in the mix becomes sort of flattened in the end? Maybe this technique should be performed at the mastering stage, because then you would have complete control over the final result, since no other process is left to be done. Just thinking out loud...

    • @51L1C3
      @51L1C3 6 лет назад

      Thanks for the reply! Yeah, you are right, you being the mixing engeneer... I totally get it. You are doing what you are suposed to do. I was probably thinking in my case, personally, more often then not the musicians I work with can't afford separate mixing and mastering fees, so they expect a finished track with a comparable volume.

    • @hyperactivists9390
      @hyperactivists9390 2 года назад

      a good mastering engineer will look for peaks first and take that into account when compressing further. And dont forget that the rides being discussed are only 1db or so. If a mastering engineer gets frustrated because he cannot properly compress the softer parts, well he can automate that. Trust me I master for a living and yeah I grouse about it but I do what is needed. Songs with dynamic changes DO sound better if they are done right But god help you if you overdo it lol

    Hi thx so much for very interesting lesson , first im sorry for my english im from poland ))) but explain me please . All, tracs going on this session on mixbus and then to master fader ? Long time ego i saw lesson on you tube and someone told " dont use master fader in session on pro tools "… i did is and i saw that when i sending all tracs in mix bus without master fader all sounds better all is closer and i dont use master fader on session, is it bad , should i put it on last chain ? I use pt 10.
    thx so much tom

    An advice from my favourite mixer, by my favourite channel!
    I've got a question, I hope you can share some knowledge: The way I setup my mix, I send everything through a submix aux track, where I do all the 2-bus process. Its output goes to the Master Bus, which has no plugins other than analyzers. I do it like that to avoid problems with the Master Bus plugins being post fader (In case I automate the Master Bus, precisely).
    I wonder what would be the advantages of setting up the tracks the way you do, as opposed to mine (I'm not very experienced so I may very well be missing out something). Could you tell some situations where you would take advantage of feeding more signal into the Master Bus plugins during a song? It would be a great set of tricks to add to one's arsenal. Maybe it would even be a good idea for a video? :D
    Thanks and keep up the great work!

    • @octopusonfire100
      @octopusonfire100 8 лет назад

      In any case, it made me thought about experimenting with plugins on the master fader and see what happens to the whole mix when feeding more signal to them. Maybe I find some interesting effects to take advantage of :)

  • @MattDaltonRules
    @MattDaltonRules 9 лет назад

    I believe the way you are routing this "or explaining your routing" is incorrect. The master fader does not behave as an aux, therefore you cannot ride an aux after the master using the master's output path (which collects from the track assignments using that same path) instead you should be using a series of auxes and automating your master fader volume with no plugins on your master and never exceeding 0db , all your density rides for rms would be on your aux, and your impact volumes would be supplied at the master fader

    I did it and its working )))). But i have questions. You wrote that first is Master Fader , from Master all going to mix bus and then to print, ok. But i have no idea how sending signal from Master to next mixbus. Could you tell me , can i bouncing it from master fader or should i sending first to mixbus and recording all on print track.

And i sent my signal to bus 134 / can be 1 / from my submaster and master fader . signal going to aux monitoring and to print track. I checked it and i thinking that its working good. What do you think. Did i good or something i did wrong way. Tom. Good weekend.

    Hi David, is this technique pre limiting or post limiting?

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  3 года назад +1

      This is mixing, not mastering. You don't use a limiter when you're mixing. And generally speaking, nothing comes after limiting

    • @IFeeeeelGood
      @IFeeeeelGood 3 года назад

      @@mixbustv sure, so the question is: when the mastering engineer will apply the limiting, this differences in volume will trigger differently the final limiter in a similar manner of the pre fader automation, do you agree?

  • @AlbertoDati
    @AlbertoDati 9 лет назад

    Ho solo un dubbio su questa tecnica. Il master fader è a 48bit, gli aux a 24. Se mandi il master in un aux, abbassi la risoluzione. Non sarebbe meglio fare l'automazione sui subgroups invece che routare il master su un aux?

    • @AlbertoDati
      @AlbertoDati 9 лет назад

    Wont this automation be reduced when limited in mastering? I mean, if lets say a chorus is 1db louder that the verse, then if a limiter is used in mastering then that part is gonna hit the limiter hard much like the first case you are showing here

    • @nickkapp1736
      @nickkapp1736 6 лет назад

      The mastering engineer (if they're good) will probably automate different parts of the song anyway, so it may be better just to let them do it.

    • @mammuth2360
      @mammuth2360 6 лет назад +1

      and what if they don't (because they're bad (lol thats not what i'd say))? :oooo make that mix fire before you send it mastering

    • @nickkapp1736
      @nickkapp1736 6 лет назад +1

      That's a fair point. I usually automate going into my bus compressor so that the more energetic parts get compresses harder and pump more, but I'm not increasing or decreasing the actual output level.

    • @mammuth2360
      @mammuth2360 6 лет назад +1

      yup same here. prefered those examples in this tutorial more than the automations on out level. sometimes I deactivate the bus comp (or expander (fire, really!!!)) for certain parts. automation is so powerful

    • @foxytv4896
      @foxytv4896 5 лет назад

      My guess is that the mastering engineer will (must actually) hear (and see) this what you did in the mix and transpose it into his 'master'. So it's cool anyways.

    dont get this because if the mix will be mastered, the volume changes will still effectively be pre - master processing/ dynamics
