Your Vocal Automation is NOT SEXY enough!

- Is your vocal automation aggressive enough? Hint: no, it's not.
But stay tuned... Kush After Hours has what you *need*. The big trick in mixing is to always be moving the spotlight around to keep the listener's ear focused where YOU think it needs to be focused for maximum emotional impact. Good news is, you can get where you need to go with only a few simple approaches.

Finally, another upload from my favorite ASMR channel.
🤣🤣🤣
hahaha
Truth!
😆👌
Asmr is for weirdos man..
Finally a mixing channel that is actually entertaining. Too many others are just so painfully boring
Right on, glad you dig it!
I've always avoided automation at all costs. I overdo compression to keep everything in place in the mix, but these vids are proving just how boring that approach is. My mixes are flat, no real movement. Automation feels overwhelming, but this is the push I need to actually do it! Time to get dirty, this work will be worth it.
Amen to all that, you won't regret the effort and, if you keep at it, you'll be able to get your mixes to jump out of the speakers!
It's always daunting, when you have a tedious process that's new to you. Compared to manual vocal tuning, riding volume automation is easy! Hehe. Like anything else, once something has matured into your normal workflow it's just another step to get to the finish line.
I was reading a twitter thread from the makers of a late 80s album - they talked about having ten hands on the desk(/board) for mixdown. It's a lot easier now...
you'll get fast at it, especially if you know your keyboard shortcuts!
@@caspar01 but even back then at least level automation was present at least in thr higher end studios.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again every studio and serious producer should have at least 1 piece of kush in the rack!
Yep. I use the Electra on every mix. Would love to have a ton of these. I have the Claraphonic as well and love it. Awesome tools. And I've learned a ton from listening to Gregory Scott over the years. Thank you sir!
Mark Scrivener 100% the Clariphonic is unbelievable
Saving up for some now. That Transient EQ is killer.
If I could afford any kush products I'd have them all...saving now
That sweetener EQ.
Clariphonic
It's like a secret sauce.
I love it. Steve Duda said a similar thing during an interview. Whenever he introduces a new sound he'll automate the volume up a little bit to draw the listener's ear and then ride the level back to where it's supposed to be. It's crazy how much human physiology and psychology (i guess?) is in all of this decision making.
Yep, it's all about understanding the way perception and attention intersect!
I think this phenomenon is called the attack principle? Once we hear the attack then our brains 'tune in' to the rest of the note or word, even if the volume drops after the attack. And it means it doesnt take up as much space in the mix ruclips.net/video/tUMQpeL8yk4/видео.html&feature=emb_logo
This man is immensely wavy
Another tip: you can use less dramatic automation boosting if you apply this same technique to a parallel compressed track(especially if you use saturation/distortion on it to compress it even more & increase its harmonic volume). Just make sure everything is in sync after you slap on extra plugins into your parallel send otherwise youll have unwanted phase problems working against the purpose.
Great reminder. We do tend to try to move things out of the lead vocal's way, rather than make the vocal Fight for it!
Both make sense in different scenarios, but that dramatic of automation will lead to a more dynamic, and therefore likely more interesting mix.
Also, I mix and imagine a live show on stage. A lead singer live would know a transition is coming, and automate their own voice accordingly. That's part of what makes Live, Alive.
In the studio, we've often beaten all the vocal dynamics into submission, so we need to bring back the dynamism that the artist would likely have done themselves.
Thanks Brotha, dually* noted.
You continue to be wise beyond your years. Thank you
Yes yes yes! Focus... soooo vital. Can't lose that momentum.
Great singers are all about energy, keeping the spotlight on
themselves with compelling performances. Super point about
"the first word or two..." Huge! The brain will often take care of the rest...
Well said!
2:08 - Love how cut the sound out to drive his point home! Amazing vids. Thank you Scott!
legit all these videos have been so much more fucking helpful for mixing then any other videos on youtube
This inspired me to use automation much more. I can't waint retouching my mixes. Thank you.
This tip seems so obvious and simple, yet I’ve never considered it, and I already know it’s a game changer and I haven’t even tried it yet. Thanks, dude. Cheers!
Cheers!
Smokig and learning lots of kush! awesome content
That's pretty much how I did it too!
Solid advise and a great reminder! Love it
automation is my favorite subject these days... thank you!
Thanks for the quick tip and guidance!
Thank you Gregory Scott. I appreciate your knowledge drops and your smooth, savoury voice. Looking forward to more!
Your videos are so amazing. Content is great but the way you explain it all is just fantastic.
Greg. Short and sweet and very helpful. For some reason I've always been intimidated by vocal automation... so I've "bypassed it" by overcompressing which I acknowledge was borne out of fear and laziness. Going to give the transition automation a go! Thank you!
Please do, it's so worth the effort to master!!! Maybe this will help: when compressing, try not to listen to 'dynamics', try to listen for 'size'. When you get vocal compression right, it makes the voice sound bigger. When there's too much (or the wrong style) it makes the voice small. Don't use the compressor to pin the vocal in the mix, use it to stabilize and smooth the tone. Then go to town with automation to keep the voice (using a Michael Brauer image) 'floating like a cork on top of the water' :-)
@@TheHouseofKushTV Will do. Screen grabbed this and will keep it at the forefront. Thank you for the thoughtful reply!
Super guru!
The pinnacle of in the box mixing. You can really do that kind of sculpting in a couple of hours?! Astounding.
80% of the mix comes together for me in 4-6 hours. When all is totaled up the whole mix usually take me closer to 10-12 hours, split across 2-3 days. Sometimes I'll leave a mix to work on another song for a few days, not mixing, just composing or recording to get a perspective shift. Then I'll come back and spend another 1-2 hours tweezing the mix, print it, send it to Dave Collins for the kind of love only he can give a track :-)
But that vocal sculpting, most of it is in place in the first session, from there I'm just massaging 'how much' of each ramp or plateau.
The House of Kush man, thanks soooo much for sharing here. It’s so cool, I’ve always loved behind the scenes info and you and Nathan are my Audio Jesuses. I’d love to hear you just talk about your production, from mics, to plug ins, to workflow on your podcast. But maybe I haven’t gotten to that episode yet!
If you check out the 'Riding the Mix Buss" playlist on this channel, you'll see my first abandoned attempt at a YT show a few years back, where discuss a lot of those exact things :-)
Again another priceless nugget of information presented in a way to make you feel good that you just learned something great. Thank you Gregory Scott for your insights
My pleasure!
Short , Efficient , straight to the point and accurate . As usual Greg ...
Thank you sir!
Gregory- I have 2 tweaker hardware units - love them! Zozilla- love watching your videos
@@JasonFarnham I dunno, this video CLEARLY shows the need for 4 Tweakers on vocals alone...

Great advice! Thanks for sharing. We love your plug-ins and hardware by the way... Peace!
Great advice using automation. Thank you.
Great tutorial! Love the bit about vocals coming in the chorus.
Hmm your voice and knowledge convinces me, I need some Kush in my DAW.
Just putting a comment here to help that youtube algorithm out a bit. This shit needs to be seen!
Great advice. thanks Kush 😍
you are just so relaxing like the real kush
Fantastic stuff as usual Greg!
I'd just add a quick 1 or 2 examples of the point to keep videos short and sweet but practical!
Keep em coming!
You are invaluable in your insights and descriptions of concepts
THANK YOU. Quality, easy to understand and to the point. HIGH 5 BRUH.
Best mixing advice ever.
Glad you like it! Much more to come!
I think this is good advice on this. I always go for carving away everything else, but be bold instead.
This is so true!! Less EQ and compression needed for sure! But, you need experience to get the importance of this tip!
Your channel is massively helpful and so special in some way 😃keep it coming i appreciate
I saw the screencap and I thought "Is it a CGI version of Greg?"
I love your plugins, by the way.

@@ItsNonyaBusiness If you mean the one on treating an acoustic space for live recording, that one has too many variables to give a useful answer to. And the truthful answer, for me, is that I would contact Jeff Hedback or similar acoustic wizard, figure out my budget, and let them work their magic on my space because they can do (and have done) a million times better job for every dollar than I ever could.
Just wanted to say thanks for the content. I really appreciate it.
i like your style
this is no revelation . . . but i love your videos and it gives me so much confidence in my own ears. I often push vocals like this and see the crazy automation, just to think "I MUST BE GOING CRAZY, SURELY NOT.
But this "never be afraid Video" is great. Thanks for posting.
Right on, sometimes simple reminders can be more powerful than epiphanies!
All your content is on point and delivers incredible value and directive.. thanks brother

This is great advice. Thanks for taking the time to share Gregory and nice to see you in person well... as a bunch of dots representing you on a screen buy u know what i mean.
Likewise, thank you for watching!
I just recognize the importance of automation when i really learned how to use a compressor. I learned that compressors will not perform miracles, and automation is needed...pros use automation...a looooottttt, even in a sick way.
I love your vid's and mixing approach, it's very similar to how I want to do things. Thanks! This's really helping me to become a decent sound engineer and producer.

Perfect! I never argue with something that works. I can't remember who said it to me but I'll never forget what they said: "Fuck your principles, they'll only get in your way." Somehow that seems to apply here 😊
Love my subscription, love the podcast!
Awww., the podcast loves you too!
totally agree, vocals is the more important part of a song !! but also is one of the more creative part of mixing tricks.
So weird as I discovered this trick by accident the other day during a mix. Proud of myself. It works really well
Nice trick! Nice work!
Outstanding 👍 reeally dig these videos!

YUP, tis is how I work. THX for showing others:)
excelleny = cheers
Nice thanks! Super useful will try that, always having trouble sitting the vocal in the mix
It's definitely my biggest challenge, every time!
Amazing again. Thank You.
dat intro & outro music tho' pure Barry White groove
I don't like to not just automate the volume of the vocals, but also the auxes. Playing with the delays and reverbs assigned to the vox allows you to make some bits not just more intelligible, but also have it feel extra close and personal during certain sections, phrases, or even just single words.
Weird synchronicity - what I'm working on right now would benefit from exactly that. Good stuff :)
Synchronicity runs the show at The House of Kush :-)
perfectly 'splained! ty ty ty
I make my life even more complicated so I use dynamic microphone (on a lead vocal only) on purpuse (of course a singer must know how to sing . control the voice etc.) so I "catch" those emotional spikes that is hard to produce with a static (sterile) condenser mic, but of course I have a lot more work to do after where some things go of the charts, and everything is "up and down" all over the place, yet again it's worth it. You keep "natural" dynamics of the vocal (without automation ), and then repair (too much up's and down's...) and when this is done, automation, and you don't have to do much, except on main chours, where you have to make greater moves ... It's trying to get the best of both words (dynamic, condenser) since ribbon mic's are very expensive ...
Oh, I get that. Maybe it's not relevant, and maybe you already do, but the biggest 'fix' for the issue you're describing: a fat tube pre with fat transformers, saturating very hard. Second biggest help was printing with analog eq, add some 100 and 4k, then get back off the mic 2-3" (I rubber-band a golf pencil to it so I have something to touch my chin and keep it consistent). Once I started doing those things, the vocals needed less treatment than a typical condenser.
"After hours got what you need" why has nobody made a song with that yet!
I love it!! Keep it coming!
How about a video version (condensed is okay) of the podcast so we can see both you and Nathan? What do ya say? Alright! Lookin' forward to it!! =)
We were working on that when the pandemic hit, it's still in the works but the logistics got verrrry complicated. But it'll happen, eventually!
@@TheHouseofKushTV awesome! Can't wait! Love the show and your insights!
🏆Excellent!!!💎Big like!!!🏆
great tips!
This sounds like it could potentially increases the overall dynamics of you mix quite a bit, making it harder to get a "loud" master out of it. Do you consider these things while mixing? Are you doing things differently when you know that your mix is going to get pushed a lot in mastering? I'd love to see a video about this topic.
In my experience it has exactly the opposite effect: it serves to keep the vocal present and perfectly 'seated' no matter what the music is doing around it. If you're making the vocal so dynamic that it would affect mastering options, you're probably disconnecting it from the mix, which is the opposite of the intended effect.
For me, if music is going to be aggressively crushed in mastering, I'd be much more concerned about making sure my kick and snare transients can survive the treatment without going so far as to become obnoxious when hammered back into place. 🕺😁
Love it!
thank you Sir! it is so useful
yeah man exactly what i needed! :D
I tried automation but I ultimately liked fader riding better. It sounds good and takes a fraction of the time.
Thank you!

voice going through 4 Tweakers!? Haha, love it
One was printed, the other 3 were strictly eye candy... because Tweaker meters are SEXY! :-P
always learning....
Yes indeed!
I can't stand it when a good vocal is buried in the mix. This is something I've noticed in some indie music, and though others may be into that style, I want to hear the vocals. I mix with the vocal up front; like pop music, but I don't make it so loud that it sounds like Karaoke. I think balance is important, and again, its good to be able to hear the singing.
I'm with you 100%. For me, I can make a vocal almost absurdly loud and, as long as I have the right tonal balance and effects to tie it back to the music, it will still feel great! My motto is "loud enough to ignore".
Why does he look like a custom made Skyrim character in the Nord Race? Especially the head movements lol
Really good info here. I totally agree without vocal clarity to deliver the message the song is trying to convey you are lost.
very informative
