this "triangulation" approach is a breath of fresh air against the "solo" approach so many youtube mixers can get stuck in. Sound is interactive. Sound is weird. Our brains are weird.

Never mix anything in solo. That's pointless waste of time. Solo is for when you need to hear something going on in this track, like a noise you wanna get rid of or anything that is very specific to that track that requires you to hear it in solo. Don't care about how anything sounds in solo because it is only how it sounds in the mix that is of interest. A track can sound like total crap in solo but magic in the context of a mix. Or it can sound brilliant in solo, but just disappear in the mix. Everything must always be mixed in context with something. Either it's the full mix or the triangulation this video is talking about.

Thanks for recognizing that! Yeah, a big reason why I'm doing videos is because I find the "why" is generally overlooked or even assumed by those who've internalized their process (or, in many cases, don't actually understand it themselves).
I got to sit in a masterclass with Chris Lorde-Alge and he said that he only mixes L C R style on everything, and then uses stereo FX like reverbs and delays to ever so slightly fill up the rest of the space. He also made most everything in mono too, other than keyboards during the session. I was sort of surprised by this, but it makes sense. You end up with a really punchy mix. You can also collapse it down to mono and everything gels together in a phase coherent way.
So...CLA does LCR...that's AOK
I need a hardware mono button for that reason. Always forget to check mono but once I accidentally mixed in mono without noticing the mix actually came out as the best I have ever done. Just minor stereo tweaks after that and I called it done.

Every single one of your tips is awesome. To me, it feels like you just keep on making grand-slam videos in terms of accuracy and helpfulness. I've seen a few of these tips and tricks in other videos (after years of searching for GOOD information), but you give the best descriptions I've seen in terms of what quality of the sound to listen to. For example, you describe the quality of a LCR mix vs other mixes in a way that I can intuit from the tracks I've heard myself. In another video, the way you explained how to balance vocals and the snare was superb. I can imagine what you're describing so I know how to implement it in my own practices.

This is THE good stuff. Your approach to teaching is both refreshing and really effective. I've read people complaining that you only tell but dont show but I'd argue that's precisely why your content is so good. The full lesson is given when WE are the ones to demonstrate what's been taught through practice, not by seeing someone else do it.
Also, I heard Sneaky Little Devils - pretty good stuff too. Those songs are quickly going to my reference mixes.

@@TheHouseofKushTV If your life is not feeling sexy, chances are you are overwhelmed by all the elements in it coming at you at once. Start focusing on triangles of smaller aspects of your life, and just focus on making those sexier together. Is your way of speaking not working for you? Are you insecure about some things? Are you lacking some spice? Zone in on a few of those and just work on making those work better together. Keep balancing out these smaller aspects of your sexiness, improving things locally, and before too long you'll find your life as a whole becoming sexier as you go.
The fun thing about good knowledge and techniques is that they are not tied to specific domains, but can apply to many other aspects of life. :)

soooo I tried this on my very amature mix song, and OMG I dialed in the guitars just right, and using the 100hz, 1kh, 10kh trick with some add. tweaking on the guitar melody. And then, following another after hours video I made the snare just so snappy that it cut through it all, and man, when I flipped that mono L switch back to stereo, i just wanted to hug you. Thank you so much, sincerly a rather drunk and happy follower indeed

These videos are some of the best I've seen on RUclips for mixing. A lot of stuff out there talks about butchering and hacking your way through a mix with no real reasoning other than "it works". The stuff from Greg is so well thought out, I now need to check out his gear since I'm going to assume the same amount of attention was put into that as well.

To understand frequency, by experiencing frequency. Wow. This is biblical bud. Thank you for sharing this. The second technique, mixing in triangles, mixing three families and then switching out one family with another to mix it against them, to really feel how say drums bass and cello mix compared to drums bass and guitar, and cross referencing what you’re hearing, it will end up generating a memorization of frequency, where you will eventually know what will sound good where before experimenting, or at least be in the best starting direction you can. That rocked. I may never try them the exact way you explained but it’s already changed my approach, and I’m not even home. My mind is different.
Right on, that (tweaking/altering the mindset) is exactly why I do this show the way I do 😊

You mentioned my little percussion habit! If I ever have a hat, tambourine, or cabasa doing something that's not a straight up every second 1/8th open hi hat, I usually pan them a bit, but only about half way left or right. I don't like them hard panned. With electronic music, particularly techno/house beats, it's really tempting to make it sit up the middle, but you're really missing out if you don't do some panning.

i like the fact you're just talking us man, i can fully comprehend what you're teaching because i only got one channel of information to focus on :P i watch other channels, see them do stuff while im listening to them talk and i'm like "oh i wanna try that" and turn to my DAW. Next thing i know i've missed half of what they were saying/showing us and have to start again which robs me of my momentum and motivation lol stay swaggy coach your vibes are on point!

@@TheHouseofKushTV On the visual distraction point, I'm trying to move away from the screen staring workflow we've been channeled into by The Seductive but Dangerous Machines. Good old (new, actually) knobs and faders with the right mapping enabling less mousing, menus, pages etc, is what I'm working towards. Having started recording back in the tape/console era, the process was more intuitive, more fun. Inline with that I'm also trying to close my eyes more while playing.

I like how you only show the screen or the daw when you need to, it makes it much easier to go with my taste when taking your advice into account, vs trying to get 50 hz to be peaking around -6 for “technically right” stuff
So weird, i was just thinking yesterday about this topic, while relistening to some past mixes and found my songs where ''too consistent'' and thought of doing mixes that would ''breath'' more :-) i think LCR is a great base and then adding elements on different sides without ''overshadowing'' the LCR mix. Thanks for the tips, KUSH TIME. ;-)

Im definitely one of those intermediate level mixers that have plateaued. Im very out of practice though. Years ago i had a huge set up and everything sounded great and i never had problems getting things to sound good, but i ended up loosing everything and moved back home. I didnt have a computer or any equipment for about 3 years. I now have enough for what i personally need to create, but im having a really hard time mic'ing my guitar amps. It just doesnt sound right no matter where i place the mics. Im thinking it probably has to do with amp placement in my room and the room itself. My mic collection is pretty limited too. A sm-57, e609, akg p170, rode m3, and a rode nt1-a and i only have a 2 channel interface at the moment. Its hard getting a natural sounding recording of a stereo amp set up with 2 direct mics in a non treated room that very reflective.
I feel you. If it's any consolation, I think that process of 'losing it all, sliding backwards, and clawing your way back' is possibly unavoidable, but definitely invaluable. Your instinct about your room is probably right, because room is *everything* when it comes to guitar amps and acoustic instruments in general.
Try this: record a verse and chorus of squeaky clean DI guitar with the intent to reamp, then feed that to your amp on an endless looping playback. Shove a foam earplug in one ear as deep as it'll go, so you're as deaf as possible in that ear. Then point your open ear towards the amp in a position roughly near where you place a mic, and dial your tone controls and gain. Then move your ear around until you hear something that sounds like a solid tone.
If nothing sounds good, you need to move the amp around. Definitely get it up off the floor, sit it on a chair, amps hate floors in small rooms. When you find a spot where it sounds good to your one ear, put your mic right there. Or put all the mics there. Record. Analyze playback in the context of the mix, suss out which mic(s) like your amp/room combo, maybe spend a few more passes fine tuning the mic position(s) and tone control/gain setup, then go with that.
It might not sound as good as your old setup, but it might, and either way it'll likely be the best it can be for that setup, which is all you can ask for. And over time, as you can, add DIY broadband absorption and diffusion. Keep the faith, do your best, and play the long game, you'll get there man, time and patience solve most problems!
The House of Kush thank you so much for all the tips and advice!! I definitely need to get my amps off the floor, especially since they are sitting on top of tile at the moment. There is an area rug in from of them, so its not as bad as it could be. Im going to invest in some actual amp stands to get them off the floor. My room isnt that small but its a untreated basement level apartment with tile floors and non symmetrical walls and ceilings that are very reflective and uneven. Any type of treatment would be a huge improvement. I really like your advice with plugging up one ear. It makes a ton of sense, but i never thought of that before. Definitely blew my mind with that concept. Im going to give that try. Thank you so much!!
I find working with single speakers is usually the best for recording. 4x12 and 2x12 always seems to have ever so slight bleed from the other cones and creates phasing issues.

can i just say that i'd rather watch this guy explain everything than 100% of the other popular youtubers from the industry. Not even, man...Greg has straight-up young Iggy Pop vibes, from the look to the self-confidence to the ‘too smart for his own good’ bit. Like Iggy, but without the self-destructive streak and obsession with literal stupidity.
Then again, Greg exudes competence, chill, ease, and generosity-none of which were obvious Iggy qualities until Iggy got into his mid-50s, etc.
2:38 I don't think it mutes the other side. It just puts everything on the side you want so you'll be hearing both sides collapsed in one side (like a mono signal but all the way to the side). Again I think this is what it does, If I'm wrong please teach me and save your bad words.
If you've got an actual 'stereo panner' on the channel then yes, it will do as you say. But most DAW's actually have a 'stereo balancer' on the channel, in which case it does as I've demonstrated. Some DAW's allow you to choose which behavior the stereo pan knobs have :-)
This was more informative and unique way of mixing that we never covered in my audio production class in university. This has severely opened me up to a bunch of new opportunities to fix my mixes. Thank you

I think the latest episodes (Mixes have Three Dimensions, Mixing Too Slow) are a lot smoother.
