  • Today I'm looking at the UM25C USB charger doctor from RuiDeng. It's the updated model to the UM24 so I thought it might be interesting to see their features side by side.

    Great review. I think it might be good to note in the video description above that the device is in fact *more* accurate than the UM24, since the documentation switches from percent - % - to permille - the 0/00 symbol, which I can't seem to paste here.

    Nice video, I have the UM25C, it serves me very well. I really like the bluetooth software, for low voltages I use it as a voltage meter on my PC screen. One mayor improvement Rui Deng could implement is faster measurements (like the Power-Z max. 10ms sampling rate).

      Yes it’s only 2Hz isn’t it. Could have mentioned that I guess. Cheers Javier

    Shame the loads weren't swapped to see if there was an actual difference.

    • @AdamWelchUK
      @AdamWelchUK  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah I guess I could have done that quite easily, but it wasn’t really the point of the video. They’re both pretty accurate, accurate enough for most people anyway to get a good idea on how their device is charging. Next time (if there is one) I’ll swap the loads. Thank you for the suggestion.

      Agreed, it was driving me nuts. Some people are just more technical than others. Not a comment on yourself Adam. Just some of us that are from a tech background would appreciate that kind of comparison.

      Cheers Colin. I think for most people the UM25 is the best option. I’d argue the slight difference in accuracy (claimed or real) will have very little impact on its usage for the vast majority of us.

    I'm happy with the UM24 by now, if they fix the software for the UM25 I'll buy it immediately

      The software for the UM25 works perfectly. It’s only when you use the um24 with the um25 software or vice versa when things go wrong - but we can forgive them that!

    I reversed engineered the um24c communication protocol. Probably will not find time to put it up on github, but here is the packet structure in case anyone is interested.
    #pragma pack(push,1)
    struct UM24C {
    uint16_t start;
    uint16_t centiVolts;
    uint16_t milliAmps;
    uint32_t milliWatts;
    uint16_t cTemp;
    uint16_t fTemp;
    uint16_t group;
    struct {
    uint32_t mAH;
    uint32_t mWh;
    } groups[10];
    uint16_t centiDplus;
    uint16_t centiDneg;
    uint16_t mode;
    uint32_t mAH;
    uint32_t mWh;
    uint16_t stopCurrent;
    uint32_t recTime;
    uint16_t recording; // milliAmps > stopCurrent
    uint16_t screenOff;
    uint16_t screenBright;
    uint16_t state; // milliAmps > 0
    uint16_t deciOhms;
    uint16_t screenPage;
    uint16_t end;
    };
    #pragma pack(pop)

    Adam Welch says OKZU is lovely then I will obtain one! Its price is reasonable and the new version delivers 5VDC 3A! (The one in this video is 2.1A, and older version) But I really do hope it deliver what it claims to deliver. Very many power banks are full of claims, even the famous ones. I think there are too many people selling the same thing (same famous names) that could be or are a fake.

    I also have both but I am not too sure about the UM25C. The temperature reading on mine seems to be 2 to 3C higher than the UM24C. The UM24C is spot on as I measured with 2 other thermometers. Well not a biggie, but still a precision device...
    I've also had it twice now that I had to re-calibrate the UM25C since it showed like a couple of mA of consumption when no load was connected to the device.. also has never happened on the UM24C.

      The temp indicates the device temp, so the 25c runs a little hotter than the non-bluetooth versions.

    What's the point of having ten times the resolution, if the accuracy is worse by a factor of 2.5 plus a wider error in the last digit? It's very tempting to assume that the claimed accuracies for both devices are specious. That ~20 mA discrepancy is a 4% difference, not 0.2% or even 0.5%. It looks as though there's some crafty marketing going on with those units, as with far too many imported goods. Thanks for the review, Adam

    • @AdamWelchUK
      @AdamWelchUK  6 лет назад +1

      The resistors attached to those loads are probably rated at about 10% accuracy. Heat and contact resistance could also skew readings. I think the increased voltage drop on the UM24 could be around the value of the shunt resistor though. I may take them both meters to bits to see if I can see the difference in the shunt resistor and the ADC.

    • @RWBHere
      @RWBHere 6 лет назад

      Thanks Adam. If you can adjust the shunt resistor carefully, and if there is some way of compensating for its temperature co-efficient, then you might improve the current reading accuracy by a good deal. There will be a series resistor somewhere which can also be tweaked similarly to tighten voltage reading accuracies. I look forward to the results of your investigations. :-)

      Didn't you notice that the UM25 has the accuracy declared by ‰ and UM24 by %? That is ten times more precise.

      Yeah. It's actually written ‰, and not %.
      It's quite amazing actually. That means it is extremely accurate!

    Next USB Display Tester and I hate them at all, because they are not very acurate. Best Tester you introduced is the Portapow, it has his own battery and is very, very acurate about I want to know.

    • @javierpallalorden
      @javierpallalorden 6 лет назад +1

      Portapow is very accurate but lacks the logging options of the UM25C and the bluetooth connectivity, I rather have those two options than being super accurate, I can always use my bench multimeter for super accurate 6 digits measurements.

      How accurate do you need these things ro be? I bought one to be able to compare wall wart chargers and various cables to find the best bits.
      Four, or even three decimal places is overkill for these devices.
      Also like the logging so I can see if my kit charges at cc,cv, stepped etc.

      the type-c charge has switch , so UM25C don't support

I just have trouble with them when they are used a lot. the one on my phone is crappy. and the one on a tablet I had FELL IN! and one in a wall adapter had to be fished out and fixed. I wouldn't mind them in something that's constantly used. I use my phone a lot while charging! that don't help.

    No point having extra decimal places if in fact its less accurate surely?

    • @AdamWelchUK
      @AdamWelchUK  6 лет назад +1

      It’s an interesting subject and I was surprised to see that just as you are. However if you think about it, it depends on what you are looking at. If you are looking at the change in voltage over time for example, more decimal points may be more useful than an absolutely accurate reading. They’ve clearly changed the ADC, and I think they are using a lower value shunt. Perhaps I’ll do a quick follow up video comparing the insides too.

    • @_jis_

      Exactly. I was pleasantly shocked by precision of my UM25C when I tested it with my references (LM4040 and AD584L). And both apps for Android and PC are good too. It is a very good USB power meter for a very good price. My previous best one was 3 years old USB 3.0 Power Meter YZXstudio (red OLED model), now UM25C is my best USB power meter :)
