My ex MIL went to HS with him, she was I think three years younger. Forest Hills High, Queens NY. My mom was also a huge fan, that's how I became one. He's brilliant! He also performed at my Hs in Portland, OR either 1991 or 1992 with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, it was breathtaking. Last saw him perform in Amsterdam a few years ago, before the pandemic. He's absolutely genius.

@@Dreadandcircuses The song is a man telling his child how he met their mother, and ultimately how them having a child dropped anchor on his up-to-then freewheeling and unburdened life. The man still loves his child, but his life has become much more crowded, complicated, and full of obligation as a result of having a child and the responsibilities that come with it.

@@SychoSam His dad is absolutely an asshole and I'm not defending him but he didn't "choose" that life. He slept with a woman, accidently got her pregnant, she decided to keep the baby, and he married her and stuck around because it was the honourable thing to do. He lives that life because it would be morally wrong not to, it happened a a lot.
You're right that he sucks and the kid would have been better off being raised by someone who wanted to be there, but those were the values of the time.

It always peeves me a little bit when "Graceland" is referred to as "Paul Simon's AFRICAN Album," when it closes with this glorious track, and then Los Lobos. The common thread is the ACCORDION, and I think it's fair to say that the album did a lot to make the instrument hip again (no more "Welcome to hell, here's your accordion." Now, of course, it's still bagpipes).

As I was approaching the Building near you - You gave me "the Death Stare" ! lol It's only happened to me a few times. And all from Entertainers - Jerry Lewis ... John Callum ... and You. Quite an exalted bunch ! lol
I took my mom to the Graceland/Ladysmith Mambazzo/Mariam Makeba/Hugh Masekela show in Columbia, MD back in that era. My mom had a cast on her leg so they let us in early. Just the two of us were in the audience.

That’s was MY GRANDFATHER Alton Rockin Dopsie Rubin on the accordion record went platinum and gold I can show the awards baby that’s my grandfather on the accordion crowned prince after Clifton died my grandfather became king know your history ❤️✌🏿 and my uncles still have the band rockin Dopsie jr and the zydeco twisters don’t discredit or over look my grandfather he was one of the fathers who made zydeco what it is today and I can prove it
