Paul Simon is America’s all-time, best singer songwriter 🥰 Dozens & dozens of songs like this, where you know every word!
Ah, hearing beautiful Linda again. Goose bumps. My all-time favorite female singer. Oh, and this album is an absolute classic.
Such a gem of a song. And Linda Ronstadt’s background harmonization at the end of the song is absolutely ANGELIC. 😇
That's her on the verses, too, isn't it?
@@Neearm …that’s her!😊❤️
@@raymondhernandez3155who's the lady backing him up in the background?
@@josephmuokwe5436 …that’s Linda Ronstadt with the female background vocals. She sounds like an angel.😊
Wow, never knew that was Linda. Bless her. And Paul, of course!!❤
Graceland was and still is an eminently listenable album. I enjoy every song on it. It's one of the best albums ever created.
What do you mean by listenable? It's a masterpiece 😊
"eminantly listenable"..."one of the best albums ever created."@@ronanmcadam7251
My late mum loved this and songs from Paul Simon and Ladysmith Mamboza it brings back memories of my late mum.
My favorite cut on this album. Linda Ronstadt was superb. Her voice just lifted this song to another level.
Which song is she on?
This one.😂
Joseph's face was black as night
The pale yellow moon shone in his eyes
His path was marked
By the stars in the Southern Hemisphere
And he walked his days
Under African skies
This is the story of how we begin to remember
This is the powerful pulsing of love in the vein
After the dream of falling and calling your name out
These are the roots of rhythm
And the roots of rhythm remain
In early memory
Mission music
Was ringing 'round my nursery door
I said take this child, Lord
From Tucson Arizona
Give her the wings to fly through harmony
And she won't bother you no more
This is the story of how we begin to remember
This is the powerful pulsing of love in the vein
After the dream of falling and calling your name out
These are the roots of rhythm
And the roots of rhythm remain
Joseph's face was as black as the night
And the pale yellow moon shone in his eyes
His path was marked
By the stars in the Southern Hemisphere
And he walked the length of his days
Under African skies

Not just this song, the entire album!👌
tru
So consistent. Every song is its stand alone hit.
great album
Yes one of those albums you just play through without skipping…
A timeless classic
Such a beautiful, lovely, and transcendent song.
Agreed! Also Peace Like a River.
And Graceland, Sounds of Silence, The Boxer, and so many more.
the entire rhythm of the saints album.....

Linda & that bass!
This song is absolutely perfect. The whole album is, but this song 💜🔥❤
I can think more clearly. Thank you. 🙏
this song somehow came into my mind the morning before the birth of my daughter on the 21st. I was terrified and this song calmed me down immediately, now I sing it to calm her down at night.
wonderful duet with Linda Rondstat
Possibly the best Paul Simon song that nobody knows about. (Okay, very few know about.) Also brilliant work here by Linda Ronstadt.
Wow 😳 didn't know Linda Ronstadt was involved
@@aaronmwangi8453 Yep, it's a duet.
I Know what I Know....
I always thought she sounded like Ronstadt, never knew it was her for real.
There's a story behind it. L. Ronstadt was criticized a lot at that time because she broke boycott of South Africa by performing there. However, other musicians broke it too -- for example, Queen, a tiny detail somehow left out in that movie about Freddie Mercury. So P. Simon included her on an album which featured many black South African musicians.
Here to Linda’s wonderful voice!
Not just beautiful... gorgeous.
I don't care how bad you sing if you have Linda Ronstadt backing you: you sound great
Paul is a master. Linda Ronstadt is the greatest, most diverse female vocalist of her generation. The line about Take this child Lord from Tuscon Arizona....is about Linda.
100% about Ms. Ronstadt. She lived it.
Of course this album won multiple Grammys.
And his 75 album "Still Crazy After All These Years."
@@writtenbyraymildo8557The Wacky Adventures Of Nitro Notebook premiered on October 13, 2006-November 29, 2019.
This is the story of how we begin to remember....I love that. Whenever I hear your voice, I am warped back to the time I began to remember.
This lifts me - beyond! so much thanks to you mr. simon !!!
Had this back in the 80s. Became part of who I am. Love Linda Ronstadt and Ladysmith Black Mambazo as well. This song reminds me of a more recent song "Gambia" by Sona Jobarteh
I absolutely love this track, it’s so simple but it manages to get all that’s required of it,in it.X
This album is so good OOOH
You feel this song in your spirit.
It becomes your spirit.
This great tune is just not long enough
This album is so awesome! One of my old favorites. This song wasn't a big hit from there, but I still love it!! That's Linda Ronstadt backing Paul up, by the way. Great lyrics too!
The supreme irony. A Paul Simon song in which Linda Ronstadt was the star.
Moved me to tears
#PaulSimon #LindaRonstadt. Their harmonies on this song were outstanding. Paul has always been one of the greatest songwriters on the planet 🌍 👍🙋🎺🪘🎸🎷🥁🎹🎻💜💛💙💖❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Amazing masterpiece from the summer of my years.
I remember watching this special when it came on in 88. It was a big deal
Linda
A magistral, beautiful aLBum foR tHe AGes..
This song in particular, and the whole album had a beautifully crafted African influence, Ladysmith Black Mambazo on diamonds on the soles of her shoes and so on, this rendition with Linda Ronstadt is epic and as the original still reigns supreme but there are a few other renditions with slightly altered lyrics that are right up there, the live version with the late great Miriam Makeba in Harare Zimbabwe circa 1987 is definitely right up there, one of my favorite songs of all time
Diamonds on the souls of her shoes
Love that Bass
Paul your a National treasure.
I'd love to see Dave Matthews and Paul collaborate.
Pass
Agree. I can see why but Dave's actually South African. He doesn't have to manufacture his culture.
@@jcl00 pass haha Dave Matthews is actually African. It would fit him perfectly
gross
Beautiful song. One of the best of all time ❤️
Spectacular.
The Joseph in this story was a real person: the late Ladysmith Black Mambazo founder and leader Joseph Shabalala.
And the second verse is a first-person narrative on Linda Ronstadt's "early memory," as *she* is the one whose origin was Tucson.
Came here to say this about Linda Ronstadt. The mission is in Tucson as well.
@@victoriabrigham7075 Yeah, you're right.
Awesome story from Joseph to linda
Paul Simon is a cool dude
Absolute BANGER, who ever is here in 2022, bless u.
It really is. Gives me goosebumps. Whole album is 👌🏼.
Bless you too
Great song ❤❤❤❤ all songs of him!!!!!!
Def my favorite album of his 🙌🙌🙏🙏
So so heavenly beautiful ❤
I remember when this album first came out. Since then I have crippled at least a half dozen tapes and 3 CDs.
This came to mind when I was on safari in Kenya and Tanzania. It will stay with me this year when I go to Zambia.
After the dream of falling and Callin your name out 💚😁🇿🇦
This is, to me, one of the best albums ever!
Paul Simon and Linda Ronstadt
How beautiful... I keep coming back and listening again and again
And again 🤣
Great song. One of the professors at a university I worked at used it to teach music form.
I adore this song so much
Years ago my late mother owned a CD copy of this great album, I wanna own a vinyl record just to experience how the 80s felt like because I was born at the prime of the 90s.
I'm sure you can find a copy somewhere from us relics(70 years old!!). Ha!!
This song wells up sweet memories in me. I remember those I watched this song with who have gone to the great beyond.
Under African stars ✨✨✨
Thanks Paul Simon. Et Al.🙂
I moved to South Africa two weeks after Nelson Mandela was released from prison, I won't pretend that this album had no influence in that decision.
My friends are currently traveling there... SA... I am not able to physically travel with them... please wave since you are closer ❤
What is the political climate like right now in SA? Im seeing some really scary talk coming from the president directed at the farmers? Whats your opinion on it?
As a white boy growing up in the middle of Iowa this album and in particular this song had a tremendous healing and restoricle significance in my life from puberty into the now quickly advancing later stages in my journey. I have met and fallen in love with a woman from Uganda and we plan on marrying... legal part here but the true ceremony will take place there...under the African sky and our union will be blessed by the he stars of the Southern hemisphere.
Congrats!!! @@brianmell3189
My boyfriend lives in South Africa Johnnsaberg area looks lovely where he is.
When I heard this as a child I thought the chorus was "Gah nnn-gah, nnn-gah, nnn-gah, whoa-o-oh" 😂
I love this song a lot

Music Trivia:
Harmony provided by Linda Ronstadt.
that's not trivia..... nice try
Would have been lovely for at least the second vocalist to be credited.
It was inda Ronstadt
And just so it's known, Linda is now retired, as she has Parkinson's (at least did at one point) and therefore can't sing anymore.
Linda was noted on the US single release of this song, but not at all anywhere on the album. Weird.
