@Elias Reddington haha yeah lol this is what Think Addis said: I found a history that I could never find; and the time when I wasn't born was beautiful. Great documentary.
I’m not sure if you realize how much of our history you captured, how many legends in the same documentary and how much of a big piece of our country’s soul you gave back to us. Thank you !!!
no words to explain my feelings😢 i really want thank the owner of this documentary❤ we have an amazing history , the good old days i wish i have lived in those time🙆
You look at this now and you realize the damage of brain drain. Before the exodus and scatter of Ethiopians throughout the world, there were original, articulate and intelligent Ethiopians lived among their people
My God! I was totally carried away by this breathtaking documentary. so original, so unique. Big up for the BBC team and Richard Taylor. Huge respect for Ethiopian music and art professionals back in the days and left me wonder what is happening to our young generation- to us.
wow the past 1980s generation speak perfect English, but know days the educated generation they can't speak perfact English or Amharic, they mix English with Amharic ,that is really bad.
A blessing to see a screening of this great documentary with the presence of Giovanni Rico and Dawit yifru from Roha Bandvtoday at Addis Ababa University. Very Many thanks for sharing this gem!!
Such a beautiful documentary!! Just found out about it but I’m glad I did! I love my people they make me a proud Ethiopian 🇪🇹. Does anyone noticed the beauty of Ethiopian? like ever single person on this documentary was breathtakingly beautiful 💚💛❤️
Heartwarming documentary. Kudos to how you and your team have tried and successfully captured a positive glimpse of Ethiopia through its music. Sad that our music is going backwards despite all these rich resources. Strangely, it created a nostalgic feeling towards an era I don't know.
Thank you for uploading this video. I was searching the original one for years. This not just a beautiful documentary, it is an album of nostalgia and greatness. Much respect for the BBC team of 1984 and for you, the one who produced& shared this golden work with us. Zillion times THANK YOU.
i really wane cry 😭 it was so lovely documentary ❤❤❤ where is all this grace for my Ethiopia now?!what happen to us now???i miss this kind of beautiful loving Ethiopian no hate All fun And Love.😕Thanx for sharing it oldies but goodies 💕💕💕
..... later on in life those ppl in the program went on to achieve great things and leave a legacy like no other such as the likes of Afwerk Tekele, Lauret Tsegaye, and Mulatu Astatke to name few. Some who are not with us anymore but left a lasting legacy, for them may their soul rest in peace, eternal gratitude.
sad we don't see well-produced documentaries like this about Ethiopia, such quality - the content, the music, the presentation ..... why do I remember these old pieces of music so well but can't recall any that came out 6 mths ago...quality dero ekre or maybe I am getting too old ... sigh
all I say is wow how beautiful are my people. how unique are our culture and how golden was this generation with outstanding people. wow what a shame to current generation including me we had such quality people that we can proud of. what a difference compare I am seeing. they are very passionate and interesting I am so proud of the 80's. the way they behave and speak was so classy. their English is so perfect, I can't believe we lost the golden generation . the current generation all we know is copying western culture and salvaging our unique identity and glory, now we're suffering from identity crisis. we think we're educated and civilized than the oldies while we are heading in to ditch, can we call it we achieved better knowledge and education. for real we are a lost generation. thank you sharing this documentary. I hope we all take to our heart.
@Richard Taylor - Thank you for this beautiful documentary! There is very little footage found of Ethiopia and it's inhabitants at this time so I am very appreciative you were able to capture the beauty in this episode. I know this is part of a wonderful 5 part documentary series, whose copies are very difficult to find. I would like to humbly request the upload of Episode 3 - Algeria, which covers the Rai music of the North African continent, if it is available. I can not find it anywhere sadly. Thank you in advance!
infact I feel very sad when I watch this documentary..why ??..because some timeless tunes on the video was loved by some of my family members who are not alive now..they are gone, but the memory is still in my mind..I miss them..thank you Mr.Richard Tylor
Thank you for sharing this gem. It's beautiful to watch most of the giants of Ethiopian literature and art in their youth and their reflection on their contemporaties art in a single video. If you have any other Ethiopia related video from your dad's archives please share us. Bless your father!
When I see this video, I always miss my friends and the place where I grew up. I also reminisce about seeing my neighbor, Gesh Worku, who gave me my first book to read when I was young
The legendary Aster Aweke I love her!!!! Thank you very much for the historical documentary video. This was the real musical history time of our country and I really miss it!
I love this! Wow! I’m truly in awe right now. So happy to have stumbled on this gem of a documentary. How Tilahun Gesesse is missing has baffled me though! Thank you for this!!! Thank you!

This is an awesome and beautiful documentary. It captures the essence of Ethiopia. The video of Bezawork's tezeta is her best. I cannot find the entire length of this video online. If someone has found it, please share.
I can find various versions of the song both audio and video but I'd like to find the full length video of the Tizita song that is in this documentary.
That's very difficult to get, you'd probably have to contact the filmmakers themselves and see if they kept some of the raw footage they shot. It's a brilliant documentary.
A powerful documentary depicting Ethiopian art-Inteligencia during a time when free expression was costly. Yet, this material has hit me with a greater mood and emotions bringing joy and melancholy like the "tizita" songs played.
What a good time they passed... I thought Buffet De Lagare was just a club, but it was a historic place for our music and it was a treasure but we Demolish it. I'm sorry to say this but I don't know way, this generation do not care for his own history.
because our generation is divided n thought to hate our history. you'd be surprised to hear what most of our youngsters think about it. they will say its "naftagnas history not ours". smh! yeah they demolished Buffet De Lagare last yr for similar reason. trying to erase history n rewrite their version of it n sadly they are succeeding.
It is extermely terrific documentary. It serves as historical masterpiece regarding the Ethiopian Music. Those who prepared it should be appreciated. Highest quality and depth of substance are pillars of this work!!!
Thank you RT. Have never seen this one before. Love the 80's style of documentary making. Were you involved in the making of it or simply a fan? I was a child in this era of music and it brought back great childhood memories, true meaning of nostalgia indeed. A mixture of the oppression of the regime and the silent artistic struggle for inner freedom can be felt in the above film. I really enjoyed this!
Richard was the Director/Producer of this film - He died last year - I am his son, Ben - I started this RUclips Channel for him so that I could make his archive available. Glad you enjoyed the film

They created music that values all of Ethiopia and owned and loved by all Ethiopians from the heart, and one that looks forward to modernity and beyond with hope, ambitions, and vision. where did the modern-day so-called politicians fail miserably when it comes to governance on reflecting all, for all and by all?..puzzle..
