    @Biffa, why don't you just download a few assets from the workshop that are very small (1x1 or 2x2) parks, so you can plop them around a bit more easily in little open area's to bump land value? I don't know what its' like in the UK, but in the NL, especially in smaller towns, we sometimes have these very tiny playgrounds (parks) like every other street in between 2 houses or small opening of any kind.

    • @SapioiT
      @SapioiT 2 года назад +3

      That is also the case for ex-communist countries, like those in Eastern Europe. We also have lots of smaller education centers for kids, and only the education centers for adults are more sparse, and often close to businesses or industry related to their field of study.

    • @edwardmiessner6502
      @edwardmiessner6502 2 года назад +2

      We don't have small parks like that in the US but we do have small landscaped areas on traffic islands in the middle of the road and in irregularly shaped squares that don't need to be 100% roadway

    • @SapioiT
      @SapioiT 2 года назад +1

      @@edwardmiessner6502 But are unpredictable little kids safe to play there? I think that's a very important difference, too. Over here, parents often let their kids out alone, knowing they have a small park and a shop within safe walking distance with no crossing frequently-walked roads. And there's plenty of green space and pedestrian roads (on which cars rarely get, and on which cars move with 5 k/h or 3 mph), for kids to be safe on. Honestly, even including the USA's fully-segregated zoning zones, cities could have a lot more pedestrian roads and a block zoned for high-density commercial, so you can have a mini-mall out of a 4-story block, with elevator, conveyor belts, and normal stairs to get to higher levels, so people could actually walk to get their groceries and back in the same time they would drive to a bigger market, and not need to spend money on fuel. And i know that is possible because we also have that around here, in some cities, 2-story and 3-story shops with a stairway and elevator to get to the other levels, and it brings the food variety of supermakets without the need for huge parking spaces, by having it right next to public transport, often used in the city centers where people are walking anyway.

    I don't understand the recent obsession with not having "steep" roads and paths. CPP also has this constant worry, but I notice it seems to have bled into Biffa's mindset as well. I live near an escarpment where there are ton of accesses up and down it and they are all really steep. One access is practically a 45 degree angle (I broke down one time trying to go up it, that was not fun lol). It also makes perfect sense to have steep paths if you are doing a hiking trail like you have here. Steep roads/paths exist, don't try to avoid them all the time is all I'm saying.

    • @jonathanfrank1812
      @jonathanfrank1812 2 года назад +17

      There are a few things at work here.
      1. People tend to drastically overestimate how step a street is. The steepest official street in the world has a grade of 34.8% which is about 15.66 degrees. Steep streets in cities like Pittsburgh Pennsylvania trend between 20-30% grade with a couple of exceptions. So we tend to think can be steeper then they really ever are.
      2. Those streets are a result of the IDGAF attitude people had in the past, San Francisco has a 15% grade limit now, and RUclips builders are building with modern thinking. I know Lee Hawkins has quoted grade limit regulations in at least one video.
      3. CPP, Czardust, and Lee are all flatlanders and the roads they see daily are not particularly steep. I don't know about Biffa's daily experience.

    I'm loving this series and getting to see a more British style of city. I love Cities:Skylines content no matter, but there's something really nice about seeing a build that feels so familiar.
    A point I wanted to make: I feel that you(Biffa) worry a little too much about the grades of streets. I've lived in a few different cities and towns around the North of England and Scotland, and in those places, when it's quite hilly, it's really not uncommon to find some very steep roads connecting places together. You often find that most of a main road will try to be quite flat, but shorter connections, especially in older parts of towns and cities, are usually as steep as they need to be to connect, because some of these roads were established well before we had the manpower to efficiently grade things like that.
    I'm going to love the series regardless, but I think you would be fine if you follow grades or the terrain for major collectors and arterial roads, but branching off of those, you could really go as nuts as would be physically traversable, honestly.

We lived in the straight rows of old terraces, only a few streets over was the winding roads of the newer housing estate, and surrounding us all were the green farming fields. I’m excited for how this all turns out, it’s bringing back memories I’d completely forgotten about for 20 years. Thanks Biffa, really appreciate your channel 🙂

    For commercial area's you could add assets like an Aldi or a Lidl, or perhaps an Action store. And maybe things like Decathlon, Saturn Electronic Market, things like that. Maybe add a big commercial area with an Ikea and some garden centers, or some additional furniture stores

    Shops to look for: Notions/Sewing, Chemist, Used Books, Toys, Gift/Souvenirs, Consignment, Crafts, Jewelry, Clothing, Hardware, Electronics, Mechanic/Fix-it, . . . That ought to do for a start. You should also plop a petrol station and convenience store near your new neighborhood

    Loving the UK theme build! Just an idea for precincts, I tend to use the pedestrian zone roads so that traffic doesnt go down it then lorries round the back. Maybe using car park mod without the paint lines as a loading area and all lorries to same place?

  • @ConorNoakes
    @ConorNoakes 2 года назад +1

    I’ve also just realised what seems so odd about the roads with the painted medians, they would usually be capped at junctions with a raised/curbed median in the UK IME. Leaving it as painted all the way through looks much more US/Continental to me

    Like pipes under roads... Pubs belong on corners, every few blocks should have a pub where the collector meets the local road. These should be accompanied by a couple of local shops (perhaps on the opposite corner) a kabab shop and or chicken shop,(not the generic brand like KFC) as well as a Chinese or Indian restaurant, and maybe a charity or other such small local business like hair dresser.

  • @cracksha23
    @cracksha23 2 года назад

    Some good shops to add in the residential area would maybe be corner shop type business so a Co-Op, a small pharmacy, a bakery. You know, the kind of shop you go to after you’ve been and done your main shop but you forgot something and can’t be bothered to drive back into town. A takeaway of some sort would be pretty realistic too. Not sure if there’s be assets for this, just an idea. Ps this build is coming along great!

  • @b00ttonius67

    Loving this series. The row of shops along the collector seems a bit unusual. Maybe get some small corner shops dotted in and around the residential area. You would expect most people to go to the centre for shopping but some corner pubs and pharmacies/take aways in the residential areas feels right

    The reason why the land value is so low is the realistic population mod. The game calculates land value partly by how many people are nearby. Usually with the ridiculous number of people in each house the land value is higher but with less people in the area it is staying lower.

    On the big modular parks, if you want more visitors, cluster your amenities. Then check the tourism tab to see how purple the cluster has become and add in a walking tour from the entrance gate (Or just outside the gate, like in the parking lot) to the different clusters and back. Tourism in the form of actually creating tours is severely underutilized by most people. In a small city with a brand new park, tourism won't be anything special, but in a fairly large city with a densely packed 3 or better star amusement park and/or zoo, you can really take advantage of adding in a walking tour or two to bump up the ticket prices and still maintain a healthy level of visitors. This also works really well for universities and stadiums if you cluster them around/near a public transport station that can bring people in from outside the map and set up walking tours around the place, or bus tours if everything is roadside, but then you also need to add in a bus depot just for that so not the best option.

    if you use the zoning too to change the depth of the zones your putting in it will be easuer to place the houses, and the zones will resize to make it work. also change it to give ppriority to new or old roads as it stops the funny jaggered ends of the zones :)

    You need a mod so that post vehicles look like Postman Pat & a Thomas train .. We have a Thomas near me at the Nene Valley and it runs on weekends in the summer or it's sitting in the sidings being maintained, so if somebody could make you a prop of Thomas with some carriages and some other train props.

    Does it feel more natural to be doing a UK themed city? I've tried doing an European themed city just to shake things up, but I find that I don't quite know how to give it that true feel. It just ends up looking like a North American city with cars driving on the wrong side of the road.
