You're a life saver man.. company truck wont idle at all and all the little tricks are disabled so when mine started doing this in 95 degree parking lot temps it was gonna be a long break without it. Im chillin now.. thanks again!
This happened to me just a few weeks after getting the apu. I wedged a piece of a metal seal in the connector. That was almost 4 years ago. No issues with it since.
I’m fairly certain that’s a Kubota engine. They’re great little engines but if it ever really runs hot you’ll know. Kubota builds them as light as they can which means the head castings are thin. If it genuinely overheats, it’ll crack the head and it’ll be belching coolant from the exhaust. Make sure your cooling system fins stay clean from road dust/grime. Many of the older applications didn’t have overheating protection on them and they’d keep running until they went into Chernobyl melt down mode..
I wrote this in response to another trucking video I was watching and I thought it might be something worth while for you and other viewers here to read, not that you don't have enough comments to keep you busy LOL. It has nothing to do with Jason's very articulate information on APU's!!!!!! ..................................I would take a picture of the official putting the seal on my truck or trailer door, even a still picture is good, plus insuring you have the paperwork to go with that seal. U can't be too careful now a days. A still electronic camera is cheap compared to fines, or being held-up at a check point (perhaps crossing the border). Most phones today have both video and still photography if you have your own smart phone. The good thing of having a small separate camera, is if they confiscate it, you are not without your expensive smart phone. I had a cop take my camera for taking his picture over a traffic warning as he claimed the flash temporarily blinded him (I asked first he told me no, I took the photo anyway). I took the arresting officer to traffic court but he did not show so, I got the warning dismissed off my record (which is good for insurance purposes) and got my camera back within 5 working days. Often they will send a sergeant or other official in place of the arresting officer, and if you know the arresting officer or have proof who arrested you as I did, then the judge will usually throw the case out, especially a petty case like mine in traffic court. ......... Another thing, if someone does not put a seal on your trailer (small companies often do that with drive vans) than at least put your own wire tie on it, and better yet a pad lock and again take a photo of it, using something to show the date, time, and perhaps where you loaded in the back ground of the photo including the padlock on your trailer door. If your truck gets broken into at a rest stop or whatever, at least you have proof you did all you could to prevent the theft or missing items and flatbed drivers, take a picture of the load before it is tarped (if applies) and again in front of where you loaded, for example just after you pull out of the companies door, etc. Then if something is missing that is not your fault, at least you may have a leg to stand on so to speak. Also insure your paperwork is all there, and check it against the load, piece per piece. These little things will help your record with your employer or if independent, save you or your insurance company money if an event or if a theft occurs. Regardless if you’re hauling trash or diamonds, be appreciative & caring of each one of your loads or cargo. Often a pad lock is enough to deter a thief, so again in my opinion, it is a cheap investment.
Thanks sooooo much for this info. We did take the apu in to get checked because we were having this problem. They changed the sensor and flushed the coolant line and new filter. Still have had the problem continue. Seemed like if I took the filter out and tapped it a bit, it took care of the problem but not always. We will now try this! Thanks, again! ✌🏻♥️🚛
Great advice! In general you should know by pulling and touching all wires and hoses. This way you know a base line of what it looks like and feels. Lot of preventative maintenance can be done that way. Keep up the good videos!
Good tip, that should help some folks. If you squeeze too hard and flatten the connector, you can buy another blade connector and replace the mashed one. I think they're usually sold in packs with more than one, and sometimes with male/female connectors in the same pack.
Thank you very much for help....at my APU unit... temperature sensor is located at top engine, right side ,just at the alternator.. ( I think so lol) Thx again..
I really appreciate you giving us that tip about the sensor connection that fixed my problem 100% I couldn't find the problem before that thanks 🙏 , Stay safe thank you again...
I like to add a note if you cover is not tight and you feel air getting out. That is air not getting to the rad to cool the return. My cover was damaged by the trucks previous drivers. So i use some hvac tape to seal it up and has not shut down since.
those connectors actually have a lock on them but can be put on improperly. overheating of an APU is usually due to an air pocket from it not being bled properly or improperly plumbed into the block of the main engine.
it might help to have a can of contact cleaner and some dielectric grease on hand . Those connections are prone to getting corrosion from road salt etc . having a small electrical crimp kit on hand is also a good idea.
BRAVO, Jason!! It's those little nit-picky things that'll just drive us crazy... When all that's needed to fix it is a good pair of Chan-Nel-Locks!! Onward 'n' Upward, Shugah! ;)
Great video Jason, you probably helped a lot of people. I think I would do away with that plug and solder that wire right to the sensor, than use tape and shrink tubing (put on before soldering) to cover the connection. I'd also perhaps think of carrying a spare sensor with you & some spare car wire to make splices with. .................. Those sensors can be a pain in the butt. I got in my Jeep in the middle of last month just to have the "check gauges light” come on in its brilliant red color, had no oil pressure showing on the dash board gauge, but the engine was running smooth and I didn't hear any tapping sounds, but still not worth the risk to drive it or even idle very long. So I drove my car to the Nappa parts store and got a new oil sensor for the Jeep after looking on RUclips how to install it, and it only took a few minutes and I was back in business. Then the end of the month the light that tells me I'm in 4 wheel drive Hi gear stopped working, again went on RUclips and found out the transfer-case has a sensor, changed it, and all is well. Both of those sensors had those big harness plugs, so I was fairly sure the plug was working fine. ……….Just a little story I thought I'd share with you. In the Jeep's defense, it's been well cared for, however it is a 1997. It cost me on the average to keep my 97 Jeep and my 95 Ford Escort $650.00 a year including inspection, insurances, and maintenance since I've owned them. Last year was expensive for the Jeep because I had a new evaporator and heater core installed, and that is a $1,200.00 Job via my favorite mechanic, but that's the average for the last 8 years that I have been keeping track. Both vehicles are in great shape and EVERY THING works in them both, so that $650.00 is possibly 3 car payments on one new car, not counting a new car's insurance, so I think I'm doing pretty well. It should be noted that I only drive about 3,000 miles a year, and I drive with care. I very seldom take either vehicle RPM’s over 2,500. The Jeep with its big long 4.0 six cylinder cruises at 55 MPH at 1,800 RPM’s, and that is one reason why those AMC designed 4.0 six cylinders last so long. My buddy has 300,000 miles on his 2000 (year) Jeep and still going strong and does not use oil. The little Ford car runs a little harder, has a 1.9, (non-interference) 4 cylinder in it and cruises at 2,500 RPM at 55 MPH. The Jeep has just under 90K miles on it, while the Ford car has 129,000 miles on it. The Jeep I’ve owned since new & the car I got with 48,000 miles on it at a dealership very reasonable for an LX because it does not have an emissions port so if I drive it over 5,000 it has to go on a dino-tuner (ruclips.net/video/CnMCHdVJuFQ/видео.html) which is expensive and not easy to find. Or dyno tuner (ruclips.net/video/GGW55b35YOA/видео.html). I have always been emissions exempt (under 5,000 miles) on both cars, yet I have to pay emission fees at inspection, that is how unfair our state of Pennsylvania is. Plus in Pennsylvania they have to pull the wheels and visually check the brakes, etc., which in a lot of cases makes it impossible to get inspection while you wait. In a state like Delaware where my sister lives, you stay in your car, then drive it thru the building and they visually inspect it, it's similar to being on an assembly line, so it's very easy to take your car in for inspection, drive in one end and out the other in about twenty minutes on the average.
Hi Jason And Heather you guys are very awesome.Your tip helped me twice for APU engine OVERHEAT code. Let me know where I can buy this Temperature sensor and plug? Congratulations for new Truck.👍👍👍👍
2 things, first, the circuit is designed as a fail safe, if the wire is pulled off, the system wouldn't be able to get a reading, so it was designed to recognize this as a fault. The sensor is a simple closed switch that grounds the circuit, if the switch opens due to an overheat, or the wire gets pulled off, the ground is lost indicating an overheat. Second, there were some issues with the sensor, and if the sensor is replaced, it is important that the sensor is not over tightened as that will damage the new sensor. May not fail right away, but it probably will fail if over tightened!
This video It really helped me with the problem I had. Thanks for the video. Rally need more videos like this one to help people to save some money 💵. Thanks again and God bless you for the work you’re doing.
Please can you do a video explaining why the Apu fan does not work when connected directly to the motherboard. But when I hot wire it to my truck battery it works.
I am having the same problem. I couldn't get the plug to come off the sensor. I did squeeze it while it was on and my apu is running. Thank you for the video. My apu is a 2023. Can you tell me if you know does the plug just pop off or is it a clip on. Mine is on the right top of the motor kinda hard to get too.
Hi . Thank you for your videos. I have red light on control panel on SOL HOLD and ALT POWER . Hav you ever experienced something like that and maybe you have some advice. Thank you. Vj
Okay had the sensor replaced did what you said to do with the pliers to make the connection better and she still kicking off could it possibly be a faulty sensor
It is possible, also possible sensor was damaged during install. Those sensor require a specific torque so they are not damaged. If it is tightened to tight it can damage them.
@@TheCraftyTrucker carrier tech put in. Could it possibly be the thermostat sticking . Can run the Apu with the heat on or off. But as soon as I run the AC it overheats and shuts off
The voltage regulators on the alternator overheat and cause the same symptom. APU OVERHEAT FAULT. Watch the battery voltage on the truck instrument panel or if a power inverter. The alternators will overheat because the belt is loose, which can be fixed, but also because it’s too close to the exhaust manifold and there’s not a fix for that one.
Is the heating core behind the air filter frozen up when it shuts off on AC. ? If yes it’s because the sensor inside the core is bad but probably because there’s too much air getting trapped inside the box because it needs more air outlets installed in the back of it.
@@modeverything9949 I wasnt 100% on first glance if that was it. But I did your trick and so far so good. Definitely should get some dielectric grease for it too. Thanks.

Wow. You are smart. I drop to the dealer, And they can't found the problem. God bless you.
Just work for me in AZ tonight thanks Jason
The awesome. Glad it helped. Super simple fix
You could try spraying some battery terminal protector over the plug to help protect it. Stay safe

Add dielectric grease to that connector to keep it clean. Wont help the connector from coming loose but will keep water and moisture out. B safe

Carrier has had a lot of problems with those sensors, That is probably why they just changed it first and did not check the wire.
Jule Godfirnon interesting to know. Good ol lazy mechanics. At least ours was under warranty. Sucks for someone who might not have warranty
Mine started doing this and it was the loose wire. Mine was in the back on the right up top. On a 2019 international.

There are a couple reasons. Is the air blowing just not cold? We have a rooftop air so it would be different than yours maybe?
That would be messed up to wake up and the air is not running, stay safe out there😀😀😀😀😀
