Like every race series, NASCAR periodically updates the rules which define the cars. Unlike most race series, NASCAR's roots go back nearly 100 years, and so does some of the technology. But the 2022 update is huge: independent rear suspension, 6-speed sequential transaxles, 18" wheels with wider, lower profile tires, coil over suspension.

Yup
Better yet, let's put a case of moonshine in their cars and have them delivered it. Back to its roots!
The difficulty would be trying to provide a level playing field when you have vehicles that have vastly different capabilities, and preventing people who can just buy a better car. The Champ Car endurance series and the 24 hour Lemons are kinda the closest we have to such a league, because there's a heavy limit on how much you can spend to overbuild your car, yet you can still do whatever you want (within said budget) because its very unlikely for such a cheap car to reach dangerous speeds.

@@rjfaber1991 they arnt
@@justkidshavinfun764 Same as any kind of track racing, really. Nascar, touring cars, V8 Supercars and all the rest. It starts small with modified road cars. Then they start getting more and more intense, teams want to go faster and push for more modifications to the chassis and over time they're allowed to replace the whole front end. Then the back end. Then just the pillars need to be stock. Then you end up with fully custom chassis designs, which get rolled into a single standard platform.
Some teams complain that more and more money gets thrown around by richer teams who can spend money on really crazy parts for a big advantage, so new tech gets limited and then... you have a track full of cars with identical chassis, engines, drivetrains and suspension and at best some real-world-inspired fake bodies. That means the only real ways to win are more reliable cars (expensive) and finding loopholes in the rules, or all down to racing strategies (fuel, tyres etc.). All of which are super boring to an audience that already doesn't get to see anything like a 'real' car on track.
I'd wager real money that pro drift series will see exactly the same changes in the next couple decades as well

Mechanically, yes, the current car more or less is the same as the car from the mid 80s lol. It was just a couple years ago they added fuel injection and LCD dashboards. The biggest things they've changed are the aerodynamics (because cars aren't boxes anymore) and safety systems (because drivers dying is bad)
NASCAR was carburated until 2012.
The framework for the current gen of NASCAR stock cars can be traced to about 1965-1970 when the field pretty much built cars to the same spec. The engines and aero have obviously changed, but the basic pattern has been the same since. Tube frame, pushrod V8, solid rear axle with Chevy truck arms, panhard bar, Ford 9" rear, clutchless 4 speed h-pattern manual based off a Ford toploader transmission, 15" wheels with 11" brakes discs. The whole package was relevant to the US car market from the 60s up to the early 90s. This change has long been due.

Unfortunately American manufacturers don't want that anymore, because people who buy American cars do it for their classic boxier body styles and those body styles are a huge aerodynamic disadvantage. The true irony of the Omaze ad is that Nolan pretended the Ram was a raptor 😂
Ram TRX, like “T-Rex”. Pretty sure dodge copied the Raptor
Dodge is mocking Ford. There's multiple depictions of a t-rex eating a raptor in the car. That's why it's so ironic.
@@bluestang9530 Dodge did not copy Ford. They built a truck that eats raptors for breakfast. Hence it's name.

As a Formula 1 fan, I would like to officially welcome NASCAR to 1989. Congratulations on your thirty-year-old gearbox innovation!
Manual h-pattern is objectively worse, but still fun. More things are in the driver's control as opposed to a computer's, so it's more difficult.
NASCAR fans know its not the most advanced technology. Thats not the point of the Sport like it is F1
@@lominoodles1122 NASCAR is has killed American car culture Coming from a time where winning on Sunday sold on Monday. There is no more innovation from any car company. To be real it's almost 'un-American.' When have we last saw large innovation in NASCAR. When did we see a team get their shit stopped and come back with a new car and blow everyone away? When will we see another story rooted in innovation rather than the driver who had the money to start racing when he/she was 10. When you take all things considered NASCAR is the F1 of the United States.
Man, I wish F1 was a bit more like Nascar. F1 has no road relevance any more anyway so I'd love for them to go back to NA v12 or v10 cars that can follow and aren't on rails. Just let the drivers test their skill DRIVING not piloting a spaceship and just put on a good show for the fans. No one watches f1 with excitement for maybe having one bit of f1 tech in a road car in the next 15 years. F1 did their part in innovation and road relevance, if they want any chance of continuing that F1 would have to become FE.
Aaron D The main reason NASCAR doesnt do that is because one Manufacture having a dominant car would make the sport pretty uncompetive. And theres still innovations in road cars there just extremely expensive
Hopefully Dodge doesn't get pissed you made me think of the Ford Raptor through that whole commercial...
lol I wasn't really paying attention and I thought it was a commercial for the Raptor
@@Flopsaurus It had all the right material to be a raptor, and then it was a ram

As a European only being in contact with Formula 1/Enduro races I thought almost all race classes used a engine with trans axle, goes to show how old school Nascar truly is
Even better: Single seaters and sportscars like American DPi and European LMP use central bedded engine and rear mounted gearbox is part of car construction.
But as we see, Nascar is kicking the door and yeling "Ya didn't expect me that quick!" but it's still 1995 xD
Kudos for the grapics, well done and greatly appreciaed.
Can you guys make a video like this but about the new f1 2022 regulations?? That would be SICK

THEY NEED TO BRING IT BACK TO THEIR ROOTS. Stock cars that must also be sold to the public.
Touring car racing would help that along. I watched the old races, I saw cars that were on the classic shows that you could drive right off the lot. Nascar now has more in common with formula 1 than its roots.
Then it would be SLOW AS HELL
@@PG-20 If you raced stock Camaros and Mustangs it would probably be faster than current Nascar tbh, specially without the restrictor plates.
A truly stock car series would also end up accepting Corvettes, Ford GTs, and Supras so it would become even faster because of that. Hell, Id be shocked if someone didnt show up with a Ferrari or a McLaren.
Id honestly be all for it, the racing wouldnt be as close because of the wildly different aero but it would be amazing to watch, it would also give us better cars for us to buy for ourselves so itd be a win win. Shame that Nascar cares more about their wrecks, fake championships, and GWCs.

Oh the Hours I spent in the Gran Turismo series, just playing with my settings, chasing my ghost and seeing just how the effects may or may not shave seconds...
Basically how I learned to drive fast
I'd do bad on the previous Laps so that I could see my ghost car run ahead of me, only to crash a couple of seconds later.
This...I don't even know how many hours I've spent on GT4 doing this. Fun times
Damn, I didn't even know that those cars were assymetrical 😂
We call them tanks...they have lots of ASS-ymetrical
Big rearends are just fine for racing and straight axles work well with banking and stagger.
If you ever get to walk pit lane before a race, take a look down that centerline from the front and rear and you'll notice it. Especially over the rear fenders and where the C pillars meet the body on each side. Pretty neat.
@@MD-pz3cn I have had my credentials to walk into teams pits over the wall but declined and hung out watching the TV's on the toolboxes. Who gives a fuck about the drivers, I want to see which car finishes 1st. It's bad enough that they just go in circles. At least drive cars that are relevant to what you can buy at a dealership.
I'm surprised that NASCAR is still using carburetors. When I remember that the last carburetor car that I've seen brand new is 20 years ago.
@@hochhaul You really can't use stock cars safely for this kind of racing. They have to be heavily modified for roll cages and crash structures, the suspension setup is completely different, the wheels brakes and tires are different, and the whole drivetrain is different to handle high continuous loads. The only stock thing about a professional racing stock car is the body panels, the whole idea of trying to keep it stock is nonsensical because you can never safely race a stock car.
Good time to buy all the old nascar parts now. Solid rear axles are bullet proof and can handle the hp and torque, the gforce 4 speed and engine components can make for good street rods
I have never been this early before and I have never even watched NASCAR

The rear-end alone will affect setups in ways that I don't even know if the teams are prepared to expect. The stagger of the right-side tires at ovals will obviously not change, but having an IRS means stuff like bending axle shafts at ovals (yeah... they do that) will go bye-bye. Lap times will reduce dramatically based on just the IRS alone.

Early 21st century vehicles.
Modern.
Excellent improvements. The drivers will love the sequential shifter. Been a standard in Rally cars for decades and motorcycles for ever. If you know your machine you can shift without the clutch. I start my 1100 Yammie in first and after that just "float the gears" as the OTR truckers call it. That's shifting without using the clutch by matching the gears at perfect mesh points using a fraction of a second of no-stress on the driveline by using the throttle. I can run up or down the gearbox with shifts in the .380 to .410 thousandths of a second range all day. It saves your clutch as well. The boys are going to like the new cars. Independent suspension will take a little getting used to after the massive tube axles but they are a huge improvement in handling and especially tuning. You want better stagger? You're gonna get it and love it.
