I remember driving the final Saab model back to the dealership after a show at our local county fair. It felt weird. I knew it was the last model, I was never a Saab fan. It was strange driving the very last model of a car. That car was actually pretty unique compared to everything else I drove that year.
Also after years of working in an auto body shop, I can still say the Saturn was one of the easiest cars to work on ever. They were so freaking easy. I actually miss the simple engineering in Saturns. Great cars honestly.

    • @davidmhh9977
      @davidmhh9977 11 месяцев назад +13

I'd argue that Saturn had the most potential of any of the brands GM axed in 08. Pontiac was more iconic, but just wasn't able to differentiate itself from Chev by the 2000's. Hummer wedged itself into a really narrow niche that wasn't viable during the recession, and Saab also had too narrow of a niche, while also just being too up and down in terms of quality.
As for Saturn, it suffered from badge engineering, but at least it's body style made it stand out. It also filled the small economy car niche better than any other GM brand.

my dad was really into saturn. a little strange that the shop in my town recommended that i steer clear from them, but they might be onto something with 90s economy cars that were always treated like beaters. its unfortunate that america seems to have given up entirely on the affordable sedan segment, but like. the saturn sky was a really cool car & the platform used by the ion was still used in australia.

Saturn was definitely something different from the rest of GM when they had the original S-Series cars, up until 2002. After that they mostly had rebadge other GM products with common GM engines in them and it took away the uniqueness of Saturn. I think they could come back today and be successful if GM would leave them alone and let them be their own company again.

The final NG 9⁵ was beautiful yes, but GM had forced them to basically run with the platform unchanged. And that's the 9⁵ you see in the Spiker pics. Beautiful; but a punishment to SAAB engineers for the OG 9⁵ and facelifted "Dame" 9⁵.

    Missed more than Holden.
    Ford Australia, the Falcon.
Mitsubishi Australia, the Magna. 380 like P76 that killed Leyland, P in roman is 5, 5x76 is 380.
Toyota Australia, the Camry nah forget that one surprised it didn't come in a ZZZ model great car but ZZZ.
Miss the Commodore's and Falcon's at the lights you don't know the rivalry in USA, it was serious here. But many oldies like to save fuel and feather it off the mark.
Daewoo also died (I hope) they put holden badges on them, not missed at all if it ain't a Commodore it ain't a Holden, Cruise made here too (shame).
Ford Territory SUV made here good SUV if into that.

Plymouth, Mercury, and Olds basically changed along with its 1950s and 1960s market, which is not a winning formula for longevity. You are basically tying yourself to a human lifespan.
Before GM ruined SAAB, those were great cars, especially in the winter. See the pattern?
Overall, the history of American auto design and manufacturing is a sad one.
Today, there is not a single American car worth buying. Not one. To add insult to injury, foreign brands made in America are inferior to those made in the company's home country. Like American-made BMWs are trash. The same goes for Toyota, Honda, etc. In fact, I can not think of an exception to any of these statements.
Somewhere along the way, American manufacturing, while increasing in production, decreased in quality. Made in America now means Crappily Made, no matter the product category and that is sad. My theory is that it coincided with the rejection of education in much of the manufacturing belt, which led to lazy and undisciplined workers. Add to that mess, insane and incompetent management that prizes cutting costs and corners more than is reasonable, and you have the situation we are in today.
    American cars suck.
Before I die, I hope I can justify buying an American-made car again, but I am not holding my breath.

Not a huge EV guy, but I wouldn’t hate it if GM paid homage to their other fallen brands like they did with Hummer. The Pontiac EV (Tesla plaid-like performance coupe) and Saturn EV (high range economy sedan/hatchback/crossover) would be pretty cool. Too bad it’s GM and probably makes way too much sense for them to do 😂

Solstice and Sky turbos were good cars, shame GM didn't bother to continue selling them under Chevrolet. With them and Honda out of the picture, these days your only options for a cheap convertible RWD is the ND Miata. The only other options left are the pricy Z4 and Boxster.

While I agree, it wouldn't have sold it under Chevrolet anyway because of the Corvette. The Solstice/Sky were basically mini Corvettes ready. They even shared some parts with the C6 Corvette too. Off the top of my head, even the same steering wheel was shared between all 3 cars.

@@AdultsAreTalking Solstice and Sky were cheap sports cars while C6 Corvettes you had to pony up $20-30k more for a much better car. Basically a Boxster vs 911 situation. It would have definitely worked out.
What probably happened is GM as usual fearing anything that would even remotely threaten Corvette sales. Because of that Fieros came with lousy engines, Shelby's Series 1 project got gutted, Camaros and Firebirds being advertised with slightly less power despite using the same Corvette engine, etc.
