Two-cloths solvent wipe + sanding to key the new coat + vacuuming. I would use 80-grit for a better key...gelcoat is so thick, sanding scratches wont show through, unlike lacquer or enamel, and you are going to finally fine-sand it anyway.
The way to go is spraying, of course you need to add acetone to thin the product and a gun that will handle a heavy material like gellcoat. Knowing what I've learned over the yrs I would use an airless sprayer to get a smoother finish. You don't want to use as much catalyst as they recommend because it can kick up in the gun you also have to be a fast sprayer.get it on and guick clean the sprayer or gun.
is it non wax gelcoat or waxed? im getting ready to do my transom and i have to cut a part of my top cap off and then try and match the white gelcoat to the old stuff. so not the whole boat.
hi mate, did you get the brand of the stuff you're using ? Note ina comment way down about it but couldn't find an answer. Apologies if it did get answered.
Flowcoat is just heavily waxed gelcoat, usually made from resin approaching it's shelf life. Not for 1st or 2nd coats...the wax interferes with bonding, but it goes on thkcker and is easier to sand.(after 24 hrs)
Top Tip.
Use a water hose, wet the floor completely to help keep dust down as you walk around.

Will fresh gelcoat bond well to very old gelcoat? Or, do I need to sand off all the old gel down to the fiberglass ? Or do I need to prime the old coat first? I can't tell if you're applying the blue gelcoat to primer or sanded gelcoat
Hi mate . You can go strait over the old gelcoat as long as you have given it a good key to bond to . Go over it with 120 grit sand paper to key it up . On mine I'm going over tge original glass and body filler
@@westcoastprojects01 My project boat is almost ready for new gelcoat whilst I am more than ready. Sanding sucks! Thanks for your tips hopefully I get some decent results like yourself
Much quicker and uniform, using a spray gun.
is it non wax gelcoat or waxed? im getting ready to do my transom and i have to cut a part of my top cap off and then try and match the white gelcoat to the old stuff. so not the whole boat.
It had the wax addive mixed in with it
hi mate, did you get the brand of the stuff you're using ? Note ina comment way down about it but couldn't find an answer. Apologies if it did get answered.
I got everything from these guys www.cfsnet.co.uk/
also meant to ask will flowcoat give you a hard finish much like gelcoat, cheers great video
Flowcoat is just heavily waxed gelcoat, usually made from resin approaching it's shelf life. Not for 1st or 2nd coats...the wax interferes with bonding, but it goes on thkcker and is easier to sand.(after 24 hrs)
You being right handed, why didn't you start on other end so you will always be away from wet, instead of always being in wet, from left to right?
No idea tbh . Just felt comfortable starting there
