I painted my fiberglass hull (Navy Blue) roll & tip with International yacht paint which is 2 pack. Try as I might I couldn't get all the brush marks out. The instructions said not to sand between coats but looking at your work maybe that's what I should have done!
With Awlgrip we sand between coats
Thanks for sharing Ken im about to paint my catalina 36ft sailboat top side its old and leave a lot of chalk on your clothes.Up here in the New Jersey U.S waiting on the weather to break
Good luck. Hope my detailed instructions will be helpful to you. Please subscribe and get much more information from my other videos
@@kennysyachtmaintenance very helpful even a 2 year can fellow your steps well done
Rumor has it that it took him three years to paint that boat in that manner
I'm not quite sure what you mean
That looks really good! I have a 2004 Intrepid 300 Center Console. My paint looks good, but there are several spots I can see where the previous owner scratched the paint. I think it would be easier to do what you just did instead of trying to match the paint where it is scratched and gouged.
Glad that you find it informative. Check out the other videos too. Please like and subscribe
Exceptional work..
Really quite inspiring.
Question: Is there a final sand after the third coat ?
Sand with 400 grit for the final coat
Looks awesome. What type of brush are you using? Where did you find such a wide brush?
They are omega brand. Try on Amazon. Please subscribe and watch my other videos
That hull is beat the EF up!!! Who the hell has been driving that boat? Mr. Magoo? Paint man can only do so much!
I think the tender caused all the scratches. Please check out the other videos. Like and subscribe
Very nice. I had a question. Can you sand and buff after the third coat? Or is it not like clear coat? Thank you
You can't sand and buff Awlgrip. You can do that with awlcraft or alexseal
This looks amazing. We are so close to painting and this is the color blue we want. Did I hear you say you are using Navy Blue? The navy blue by awlgrip I see here in the States is much darker than that, just wanted to double check!
Yes Awlgrip navy blue. Please subscribe and watch my other videos
awesome. Can you roll and tip clear over that? I've always used a base clear with Awlgrip. I've also mixed 50/50 base/clear for a fourth coat.
Sure you can roll clear over the base coat. And yes I also add clear in my final coat. Please subscribe and watch my other videos
What kind of brush do u use for the tipping
Wondering why you need to tipp?
Could the job be done without tipping?
Loved this video - shows great finishes can be achieved without a spray setup.
We tipp because Awlgrip leaves lots of bubbles when just roll. The tipping removes the bubbles. Please subscribe and watch my other videos
Awesome job ! Does it come out that shiny or do you wax it like you would a car ?
Yes it comes out glossy. Please subscribe and watch my other videos
Great video! What paint would you use on the bottom? Thanks
Thanks. Micron 66 is one of the best for bottom paint. But it cost more. Please like and subscribe for .ore informative videos
What year is that intrepid? Is it a 2005-2008? I mostly did lay up and infusion at the factory and a few gel jobs. Curious to know if you ran across any spider cracks in the gel coat? These boats are built well. At the factory they sprayed the paint. They had a booth there. Have you tried a foam brush for tipping?
I'm not sure of the year of the boat. Spider cracks are sometimes tricky to repair. Sometimes I just use west system to fill them. Other times I just use 545 primer. I use really good brushes for tipping. Omega or Corona. No foam brushes. Please like and subscribe. Check out my other videos
That is great craftsmanship! How much did that cost to do. Im assuming it is by square footage?
Thanks. My pricing can vary. Take all repairs in consideration. Please subscribe and watch my other videos
Nice work! What type of Awlgrip paint did you use?
We used Awlgrip
That is really a nice job you guys did awesome
Can you let me know what paint you guys used for primer and paint?
We use Awlgrip 454 primer and Awlgrip navy blue for paint
i thought it was 545 primer
Excelente job! Watching from Puerto Rico, which brushes you used for the tipping,(brand and model). After the 3er top coat, it doesn’t need any top of clear? , Thanks in advance loved the video!
Thanks. The brushes are omega brushes. You can search online for them. Awlgrip already has its own clear already mixed in the paint. Please subscribe and watch my other videos
@@kennysyachtmaintenance thanks very much for the fast reply, I subscribed 💪🏽🔥!
Nice Intrepid
hello how much reducer do you add to the paint ? awesome job congratulations!!!!!
You can add up to 20% reducer to the volume of paint. If brushing T0031 of spraying T0003 or T0001
@@kennysyachtmaintenance thank you I’ll gonna brushing!!👍🏻
My current hull is shinny below the water line, its the gunwale and the center console supposed to be shinny too or have a matte finish?Should I sand it down to a certain grit?
The center console is usually a shinny finish. Below the waterline is usually bottom paint
@@kennysyachtmaintenance what about the gunwale where the rod holders are? mines a dusky with like a textured finish. I guess for non slip, but looks original not rolled on… my whole boat is gel coated
Sweet Cummins 6 speed
Well done Bro.
Is it one component paint or 2k
Final results looks great 👍
It's Awlgrip. Two part paint
Third coat looks great. When you roll and tipped it, how long did it take too set up enough so bugs and dust don't stick to it, or get rain streaks?
I'm located in the virgin islands so rain is always a high possibility. For that reason I always add some excellerator to speed up the dry time.
I use excellerator to speed up the dry time. Nothing you can do about the bugs. Thanks for your comments. Please like and subscribe. Help grow the chanel
Good Afternoon! Wish I still lived in St Thomas I would juts bring my boat to you and let you do this exact paint job. But I'm now on Florida. Can you detail the exact sander, the grit, that you used.
I used a porta cable orbital sander. And the velcro sandpaper. Different grits
Nice! How come you washe between coats and not use solvent instead? Doesn't your blue tape start lifting once soaped? Thnx for showing 2" foam roller, not a lot online with it (how I found this). Cheers!
It's always best to wash down. That way you get rid of all dust and possible contamination. The coat of primer usually seals the tape in place and prevent it from lifting. Please like and subscribe for more content
I'm using 3 part Alexseal right now, outside, 3rd topcoat, using their new additive to pop bubbles. They say solvent not wash, maybe theirs is different from Awlgrip? Your work looks lovely, good luck on more biz, you deserve it :)
Hey Kenny Great Job! By any chance do you know what AWL GRIP color code this is?
This is Awlgrip navy blue.
Please subscribe and watch my other videos
Radical work !!! Could you recommend a paint for me. Going to tip n roll a 37ft sailboat. Want it to be gloss black. Keep the 🔥 strong
AloHa
Alexseal has a super jet black. Very shinny
How do you clean the brushes after painting? Or you uses new tools for each coat?
I use lacquer thinner to clean my brushes
What type of paintbrush bristles are best for the tipping please?
I use omega paint brushes.
Nice work where u guys base.. Are you Stlucian??
We are based in St.Thomas Virgin islands
Kenny,What do you use for reducer when roll&tip allcraft 2000?
Awlcraft 2000 is specifically for spraying. There is no information for rolling and tipping Awlcraft on the Awlgrip guide book. Awlgrip is for rolling and tipping and the reducer for that is T00031
Wondering where you are located? Possibly have a seafox 228 that could use a new paint job?
We are located in St.Thomas Virgin islands
I learned alot great video .
Thanks please subscribe and watch my other videos
Big man I from deh two can I also spray with a paint gun or is it best to roll and tip
Awlgrip can be sprayed using the spray converter and spray reducer. For roll and Tipp you use brush converter and reducer.
How stiff is the tipping brush? Is there a make and model?
The large ones brand is omega. The others are from the marine store. Barger bristles. Amerinana
As soon as I saw the sander turned on an edge, I became skeptical. Then I saw they filled scratches with epoxy... Guys, if they're small scratches, fill with finish filter or acrylic putty. Epoxy is a much harder compound than the paint around it, so it'll sand differently. You can reduce the difference with block sanding, but it's much more difficult.
Thanks for your observations. The west system mixed with 410 sands very easy
Gelcoat in the paint already or do you add it later?
No jellcoat. Awlgrip
How long will a paint job like this last on something like a bass boat?? Can this be done to a bass boat?
I'm not familiar with a bass boat
Very nice gentlemen. Was there a product number for the Awlgrip you used ?
We used Awlgrip navy blue
Could someone please explain how Awlgrip compares (advantages abd disadvantages) to Polyethylene paint or, alternatively, Gel Coat? My old, original Gel Coat got tired (faded), so i overpainted it with Brightside Polyethylene paint. That looks great for a few months, but the finish never lasts, such that it needs to touching up evert few months. So, i was wondering whether to start all over again with a new layer of Gel Coat but someone suggested i switch to Awlgrip?
You can paint over faded jellcoat surfaces providing that you prep it well. Sand and apply primer then paint. But it is not advised to put jellcoat back over paint. Once jellcoat gets old and faded most people switch to a two part paint. Awlgrip or alexseal is best. Please subscribe and watch my other videos
@kennysyachtmaintenance interestin. Thanks for that. If I go for a two-part paint, how many years of maintenance free life could I possibly hope for?
can you tell me how many sheets/pieces of sandpaper you used each time you sanded
It's hard to say how many. We really don't count
How many days do you wait before top coats?
The very next day we sand and paint
What did you use to fill all the nicks and dings?
I used west system. I thickened the west system with 410 thickener. It's eszy to sand. And does not absorb water.

Could you share what type of rollers and paint brushes you used to get that kind of finish.
We use the foam rollers from the home depot and the brushes are omega brushes or Americana brushes
