Holiday Cranberry Sauce - Sweet & Tart - Delicious & Easy - Perfect with Turkey, Chicken, Pork

  • Holiday Cranberry Sauce
1 cup granulated sugar (plus 1/4 cup more possibly)
    1/2 cup brown sugar
    1/2 cup water
    1/2 cup orange juice
    zest of one orange
12 ounces fresh or frozen cranberries, rinsed
    1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
Using a large sauce pan, combine both sugars, the water, juice, and orange zest. Whisk until sugars are mostly dissolved. Add the cranberries. Place over medium heat and bring to a soft boil. Watch the pan carefully so that it does not boil over. You may want to cover the pan with a splash screen, to minimize the splattering.
Once the mixture is at a soft boil, reduce the heat to low and continue to simmer for approximately 20 minutes until the sauce has slightly thickened. (It will continue to thicken quite a bit as it cools in the refrigerator.) When the sauce is at your desired thickness, remove from the heat and stir in the cinnamon. Taste to see if the sauce is sweet enough. If it needs more sweetness, stir in another 1/4 cup of white sugar and stir until it is dissolved. It will dissolve quickly because of the hot sauce.
Pour the cranberry sauce into a bowl and allow to come to room temperature before covering and refrigerating.
NOTE - You can make your cranberry sauce well ahead of your holiday meal. This will keep in the refrigerator for several days.

Thanks for keeping good food alive and well! My grandma, who never used a measuring spoon, said just before she died at 88, "People today don't know what good food really is." A good friend of my parents who is now 90 told how the women would make dinner at the church for funerals and it got to the point that the younger women couldn't cook or had no idea how to bake a pie!! Not only do you give us great food, you are a GREAT instructor!!

I like your cranberry sauce recipe so much better than my cranberry relish recipe. Mine involved putting the cranberries and the oranges through a grinder which meant that you had to first work very hard at removing all of the white part of the orange. Mine didn't involve cooking but I like the idea of doing it your way. Thank you for teaching me how to zest an orange because I didn't know how to either.

So true. Tom & Melissa are so very inspiring. After working 18 years in food service in NY for a catering company, we have learned more from them in the past year than all those years. Simple, wholesome good food. Tom's way of teaching is amazing. Esoecially his stories associated to his recipes. Love it.

Your cranberry sauce looks FANTASTIC and you’re right, I think it might be illegal to have Thanksgiving dinner without cranberry sauce!! I love it too!
I do have one suggestion for your channel…I think you need to change the name to Come Sit At OUR Table. This channel depends on both of you and from what I can tell about Tom he very much loves his beautiful wife, so she sits at the table too of course. At the end when you say we are welcome to come sit at your table I always feel sad for Melissa. So, from now on, could you call it our table?? Other than that, you guys ROCK, I love the videos, you put out some of the very best cooking content on RUclips. God bless you both!! ❤

My mother made cranberry relish for the Thanksgiving and Christmas. She has passed in 1990 and I have no idea what her recipe was but I remember fresh cranberries, whole oranges and pecans put through a grinder, plus sugar to sweeten. Oh, the wonderful taste of it! Nothing like that canned, jellied food that has no trace of the berries left.

My mother also made raw cranberry relish. Cranberries, orange maybe a lemon put thru the food grinder. As a child I didn't like it as it was too tart. For years we had the canned variety which was unusual as she was a very good cook and this could be made ahead. Now as a grandmother and great-grandmother I prefer the fresh made.

My Mother always made fresh cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving, Christmas and other special holidays, occasions. This brought back some wonderful memories, thank you. Now that you have tasted your cranberry sauce, your voice sounds so much better. It's a miracle cure. I can probably eat the entire bowl. I love cranberry sauce. Your recipe is great, Tom and Melissa! Thank you. I know what you mean by the Kentucky Crud. Every time I cross over that state line into TN I feel so much better! KY is one of the worst states for environmental or plant allergies.
One Christmas I unintentionally used all of my ground cinnamon in baking so I didn’t have any for the cranberry sauce. I searched the spice drawer and saw the ground ginger so I used that instead. It was a hit so that’s what I now use. It’s really yummy!! If I have a knob of fresh then I will microplane a little of it into the cooking berries.
When my dear Mother made cranberry sauce she made it like yours, but didn’t thicken it quite as much by using more fresh OJ, then at the very end, after removing it from the heat, she would add diced celery and diced pecans. Now that is very delicious!! 😊 The crunch is nice because everything else is smooth or soft to eat (turkey, gravy, dressing) so the contrast is really nice. The perfect bite with all four!😋❤️😋

Our Thanksgiving was in October and this year, cans were $5! I decided to make my own. I did it in the pressure cooker with a bag of fresh cranberries, 1/2 cup dark brown sugar, 1/2 cup maple syrup, zest and juice of a lemon, 1 cup of water and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. I had no idea how it would turn out, but it was delicious! tart and sweet, not too much of either. It was very runny when I pulled it out of the pot, but by the next day when it had cooled in the fridge, it was just the right consistency. I like the orange better, but all I had were lemons. Christmas is coming though so ... lol

Definitely trying this recipe! I grew up on the cranberry sauce straight from the can, so I wish I could thrill my parents (RIP) with a gourmet version! 😂 My Daddy would have said “Tastes like Downtown!” 🤎😂
I have 2 tips for you:
Get a Neti pot and use it every morning. We both use it in the shower every day. You can add a little pinch of fine sea salt or saline. It’s a miracle for allergies or any respiratory problems. For real. The Drummer is also a Blues singer so it’s not funny when he’s sick or stuffy. The neti pot is a saving grace.
I freeze cranberry sauce in an ice cube tray, then put the cubes in a freezer container. A cube is just enough for a sandwich (The Drummer LOVES cranberry sauce on almost any meat sandwich) or to serve with dinner all year. It awesome with barbecued ribs! Or pork chops. Or chicken. So I’ll make a double batch of this - one for Thanksgiving dinner and one to freeze up!
    Happy Thanksgiving!

I definately have to make this for thanksgiving. This is one of my favorite sides. Of course I’ll have to have a can of cranberry sauce for the people who just won’t eat homemade. I sort of feel the same as you do. I was supposed to get a shoulder replaced this past Thursday but I had a fever so they postponed my surgery. I thought I just had a bad cold. Now I’ll have both of my arms for thanksgiving dinner lol. Feel better soon Tom. 😊

This looks delicious. I absolutely love cranberry sauce alone; with fish or on a sandwich. I did not know how easy it would be to make homemade. I will be at Publix today and will buy the ingredients for this recipe.

Most of the time I use cranberries and just cook them with sugar and water, and I make a sauce for the knock off Costco roll ups with the turkey and cheese and lettuce and tomato and I mix the cranberry with cream cheese for a dressing for the wraps and it’s very good like that also but I can’t wait to try this one with the orange juice and cinnamon and orange zest. Thank you very much for the recipe and take care of both of you, love your recipes all the recipes are so good and you make it so easy with all your stuff and step-by-step instructions

We always make fresh cranberries , use orange as well, will try the brown sugar and cinnamon addition .We also do a cranberry relish with orange and walnuts that is not cooked , just put in food chopper. Both are delicious. Have a great Thanksgiving. Thanks for the recipes. Keep them coming......

Just wanted to say “hi” and thank you for your recipes. I make homemade cranberry sauce for our holidays and enjoyed seeing how someone else makes it. I do it the same way but without the orange. My daughter-in-law and myself are the only ones that like it and she doesn’t like it with the orange so I do it plain for her. We always have a lot leftover so I had to find many ways for the excess. I think our favorite is with peanut butter. The cranberry sauce is a great contrast with the PB. PB and cranberry sauce sandwich . Yum!

I've never seen anyone cook homemade cranberry sauce for that long. I like mine a bit more juicy, but I bet the cinnamon adds a kick.

I made your cranberry sauce recipe for Thanksgiving, it is wonderful. It is by far the best I’ve ever tasted. The only difference in makings it was I didn’t have an orange so used Tang powder as substitute and was wonderfully pleased.
