THANX MAN!!! I have one today doing the same thing. It was a slimy gooey mess 3 hours of cleaning. makes ice fast, compressor shuts off in harvest ice leaning then falls 30 seconds later. machine is old 12 years i think remote condenser in good shape LOUD compressor.
I have carefully used a Dremel tool with their small wire brush to remove the scale from many Manitowoc evaporators. After I get them clean enough to harvest correctly I install a poly-phosphate feeder on the inlet water. Everpure Insurice filters have a poly-phosphate feeder built into them but no way of knowing when it has run out. The minerals that form the scale on the evaporator can't be filtered out so the filter is really just an expensive way to feed the poly-phosphate. Dave, your videos are the best, really love your style.
Also, if the weep holes plug up, it's not level, the air pump doesn't work or, the condenser fan stays on during harvest will cause harvest issues. Love your videos man, I've learned a lot from you.
Hello everyone and thanks Dave for the cool video!!! :D I had about the same problem with a Simag ice cube maker, the service support was no help. I should replace the evaperator, because the coating should be broken but the machine was 1.5 years old and looked like new. I could never have explained that to the customer. I was aware that the hot gas temperature was probably too low, with all the pressures were ok, I tried to increase the boost pressure with a little more refrigerant but it was very fast too much. The solution, despite all the right values, was to replace the expansion valve, preferably the original one. A normal one works but it was not that easy. It was also important to have a completely warm condenser and a little overheating on the evaperator (equal heat absorption at the same heat output in the harvest), it takes a bit for the right attitude. And boom the harvest lasted only half as long. It took me a whole day but the customer is satisfied to this day. I think the E-Valve worked almost right but just not quite correct. Have a nice day Manu
Thank you very much for this golden tip. I used a smal rotating brush to polish after i got most of the scale away with a srewdriver. Cost me 4 hours the other day. I also tilted the achine forward a bit.
Sounds like you got a good tech support guy to talk to at Manitowoc. Half the time I call I get some Joker that doesn't want to spend the time to help me properly diagnose the problem. Last time I had the same issue as you the guy was trying to get me to replace the evaporator coil and swore up and down that doing what you just did wouldn't work. Keep up the good work Dave!
Jay Walling back in the day they had the best tech support it was amazing. Now there machines are made in other countries and the quality of parts has slipped as well.
Been there and done that. THAT along with improper leveling, separated partitions and other stuff. Manitowocs are always fun. Dave, I love your vids. Real world stuff that I'm sharing with an apprentice who can't shadow me. Thank you!
Just came across your video and had similar problem(still),customer says unit keeps shutting off by itself(hmmm similar problem I think) will go back and see if it has low ice production or has shut off, I did remove, clean/sanitize all parts and run cleaner thru twice but, like tech support said need to clean each one individually(not my favorite thing to do), will report back on how it came out...thx for the info and good video👍
Years ago when I went to Manitowoc School. There head tech support technician told us that was the first thing to do is clean the machine. It was funny everyone who stood up about a problem with a Manitowoc ice machine that was the first question to ask
Sometimes it’s just the basics, people get hung up on pressures and time but most of the time it’s just a basic clean, they are so time consuming and to the customer it looks like we are doing nothing lol
I've heard of scale making the ice stick, mainly on the whirlpool k20 and k40 models which are common here. I call jobs like that 'On the job training', everybody needs a school day once in a while!
Was having this issue with a Scotsman machine. It will drop ice with 10-30 seconds to spare before it will say bin full. If it have any further issues I will do what you did here. Good tips!
So Regular Nickel safe ice machine cleaner would not have worked? What a shame ? When I come across a dirty dog like that one , water hose Nubrite , and ice machine cleaner. Great Fix Dave.
I had the same problem with a Manitowoc. Tech support told me to do the same thing. I did and it still didn't work. Called Tech support back, he told me to tilt the machine forward slightly. That worked! Junk!!
Gotta do what you have to do. Definitely time consuming and labor intensive. Everything I learned from you and some reading all leads to the evaporator needs to be clean. Keep up the good videos.
I had the same issue on one a couple months ago, called tech support got same advice worked like a charm. I was surprised because the plates didn’t even look dirty. I think mine was a little more crucial because of the cold Ambient of my area.
I'm working on a large Manitowoc that has almost no refrigerant in the system... working one day and not the next... I sure like to find that expensive 13 lbs cloud floating around....
That seems to be a big problem with Manitowocs. ,getting ice off the grid. I’ve had a similar issue with a remote.I bumped up the cut in and cut out fan cycle switch on the roof ,to get more heat during harvest.A lot of techs cock up the back of the machine for more slope.
with manitowoc it also depends on the ice thickness...it needs the weight of the slab to fall off the grid...that ice thickness looked good but im just saying. Manitowoc always tells you at their field service seminars you cant tell if a plate is dirty by looking at it...if pressures are good then clean it. You can also check the evaporator temp in the computer...the T3 & T4 thermistor will tell you if the plate is warming up or not.
haven't watched yet, but lol ahead of time. I'll assume it was one of them dumb little things that bites us all :) after watching. one of the first thoughts mostly invisible crud buildup, was it a thin white film of minerals? I don't do ice machines, but the same thing has messed up fridge ice-makers for years, the ice sticks so hard it wears the gears and breaks the arms, they have heater element to help release. the old metal lever ice cube trays would stick from the same crud. thinking back it's mostly a "city/supplied water" issue. maybe add a reverse osmosis setup if it's real severe, probably not cheap for the volume of water required!
Manito work should make a extends it defrost cycle for cold-weather areas like Hozier Zaki does, because an extra minute of the frost time would’ve solve that problem without me doing any of that
Sir my ice macine hanging frion is high after drop frieon 40psi working good 2hour after again frieon is low suction discharge pipe very hot pressor is low
There is a product on the market that solves all of the manitowoc issues herein as described its a product put out by a company called .....ready a product called hoshizaki period
At the time it was high 20s low 30s, I actually put a couple pounds in it just to bring the head pressure up a little bit more to get it a little hotter
If compressor is slightly inefficient you will have harvest issue. If liquid line doesn't get near or above 90 degrees during freeze, there won't be enough heat for cool gas harvest. We have that problem in the northeast during cold temps. Headmaster aren't high enough in my opinion. With pressures spot on in freeze and harvest, I would lean to bad evaporator, impossible to physically see. Try using thermal imaging.
I need one help how water storage the ice cupes area my machine on the water never stop the cups all water drops to below drainage tray pls help me thanks...
This is good practice for a future career as a dental hygienist. That evap looked ok in the video but maybe the nickel is taking a hit from something in the water? Anytime I see ice on Manitowoc or Scotsman that looks hooked like it hung on the evap I clean everything like you did top to bottom and start over. So many ice machines I see have no filter or haven't ever been cleaned for years. That one looked OK though. Sucks that you chased it. But it shows us apprentices that the pros like yourself still get stuck once in a blue moon.
I have a manitowoc ice machine that will not harvest. It's the new indigo manitowoc. I had a shorted thermistor, changed that...now I think I have a bad ice thickness probe. Any suggestions??
and again and again and again, if it's anything like fridge ice-makers and the old coated metal cube trays. it's a never ending battle until you alter the water! =p
i'm not impressed with ecolab. they are a joke down here. id have a talk with your customer and ask him to let u put a 4000 on it. HOw Big a machine is that one? i saw it's a Remote.
So simple , Yet Such a Pain in the Azz. That Sucks ! Definate design flaw if thats all it takes for the ice to Not come off Properly. That Was unbelievable that that was the only Problem. Hoshizaki Ftw ! Id Like to Shoot that Grid With a Thermal imager to see if the Temps are even across that Plate in Harvest. That Would be a Sweet Video ! Hey , Ulises Palacious I believe u got a thermal imager , Video idea for ya. Take er easy Norcal.
OcRefrigeration,Hvac & Electrical. I have harvest issue with Manitowoc all the time. They added air assist to help and it dose help but as you can see the ice can still stick. I wonder if they are using less quality materials if that has anything to do with it. Years ago I switch to selling Hoshizaki and talking customers out of Manitowoc this customer would not switch over 😂😂
i Have a couple indigo's out here and have not had any problems with them. thermistor issues- yes once. but not ice release issues. it must be your water up there. one iY0604 i installed about 5 years ago and it has a 4000 filter on it and it Works well no problems.i clean it every year or two. scale is miniscule since it has a 4000 on it. i swear by everpure 2000 and 4000 filters. worth thier weigh in gold. been using them for over 30 years. other indigo has ice o matic filters on it up until last year and has no filter on it right now for a year and no problem with it so far its a indigo iy0604 too.
i installed a ice o matic ice 0606HA3 about 8 years ago down here in san clemente and it has Not had a water filter on it EVER for the entire 8 years and i Just cleaned it for the first time in 8 years and it still was not even scaled up . i Was shocked !! a Little Black slime But, NO scale. Straight city Water. no filters. it was insane.
This was the perfect video…. Every time since it had harvest problems it was a dirty grid…! Excellent video thank you….
Nice to know I’m not the only one that gets humbled by a piece of equipment. Good video
kevin latreille it our job.

Coolaroni Mac thanks for watching
I think we have all gotten our asses kicked from ice machines before lol
Great job Dave. Something to keep in mind if I ever come across a machine with proper pressures and ice not dropping off the evap.
Same exact issue I had today. Just love your videos Dave!! 🤟🇺🇸
Also, if the weep holes plug up, it's not level, the air pump doesn't work or, the condenser fan stays on during harvest will cause harvest issues. Love your videos man, I've learned a lot from you.
ttownazboy520 I checked all that and more. It was fun. And ended up being dirty evap. Lol
Hello everyone and thanks Dave for the cool video!!! :D

Good little technical insight, Dave, thanks!
Your videos are very helpful ! Thanks for making them .
Thank you very much for this golden tip. I used a smal rotating brush to polish after i got most of the scale away with a srewdriver. Cost me 4 hours the other day. I also tilted the achine forward a bit.
Bro That must’ve been one hell of a bitch I hope that customer was happy and gave you a good tip
hardcooling old customer of mine very understanding and gracious.
your a genius partner!!! thank you for sharing your excellent work!!!!!!

Been down that road many times, nice fix!!!
Got my ass kicked today, I’m gonna try it. thanks for the video great work

Good advice as always Thanks Dave
As always.... Great job and great info!!!
BK HVAC thanks Billy
Good work Dave. You said it equipment now days don't last.
Ron White its getting comical
This helps me, I’m gonna try it! The one I’m working on is doing the same thing and everything else is up to par
Sometimes it’s just the basics, people get hung up on pressures and time but most of the time it’s just a basic clean, they are so time consuming and to the customer it looks like we are doing nothing lol
So true.
I've heard of scale making the ice stick, mainly on the whirlpool k20 and k40 models which are common here.
I call jobs like that 'On the job training', everybody needs a school day once in a while!
You know it!
heavydiesel I get schooled all the time. Lol. Then I over think things. 😂😂 and it goes to poo.
When in doubt. Always clean the ice machine
Felipe Tafolla it would have I think.
Nor-Cal Refrigeration & H.V.A.C those Hoshizaki units never have this problem 🤣😂🤔😬😄
I had the same problem with a Manitowoc. Tech support told me to do the same thing. I did and it still didn't work. Called Tech support back, he told me to tilt the machine forward slightly.
That worked! Junk!!
McCutcheon Services LLC machine has to be level. Those bin switches are finicky if the machine isn't level
Apprentice Phil It's not tilted that far forward. Lol
Gotta do what you have to do. Definitely time consuming and labor intensive. Everything I learned from you and some reading all leads to the evaporator needs to be clean. Keep up the good videos.
brad mironik thanks Brad
Glad to see I am not the only one that gets stumped sometimes. Thank goodness for tech support.
TP Services I get stumped all the time.
Great Video!! I like your showing that, like all of us, we sometimes get our butts kicked by da machine!!!!
Excelente aula!👏👏👏
I had the same issue on one a couple months ago, called tech support got same advice worked like a charm. I was surprised because the plates didn’t even look dirty. I think mine was a little more crucial because of the cold Ambient of my area.
JMG Refrigeration how cold just curious
Good job learned something new today thank you buddy
chico abdallah thanks for watching
Thank you sir, was just having the same issue.
Good call I always start with descaling good video.
Literally had the same repair in Tuesday.!!!!!

kingofthecrease30 I like to junk them and sell Hoshizaki 😂😂👍👍
Nor-Cal Refrigeration & H.V.A.C what a coincidence....i junked 2 hoshizakis this week and installed manitowocs 🤣🤣
kingofthecrease30 😂😂😂poor customer 😂😂😂😂😂

The unit is probably level. Adjust the legs on the bin so the ice machine is leaning forward some. Gravity will do the rest
You are human 🤘🏾🤘🏾😂😂
Sir my ice macine hanging frion is high after drop frieon 40psi working good 2hour after again frieon is low suction discharge pipe very hot pressor is low
Manitowoc ice machine its like check patience of the technician.
Every time. 👍👍

Sean Mackiewicz that a good idea for a video. I’ll do that.
I need one help how water storage the ice cupes area my machine on the water never stop the cups all water drops to below drainage tray pls help me thanks...
I deep cleaned our ice machine at our hotel and when I plugged it back up I can't get it to come on it stays in the off mode..it's making me made
Been there many times. Other than that I've seen the nickle coating stripped off on some others.
George W I’ve come across that a bunch also.
i automatically said dirty machine was causing the hang up...the mildew was evident from the top down

Apprentice Phil we get stuck until the tools are put away for good. 👍
What kind of cleaner do you use?
Brad Van Manitowoc
Try replacing evap frame! Your job was easy. I want that Frame eve app top 30 inch modified replaced that's what I wanna see you do
I’ve done them it’s mega suckage. 😂😂😂 that’s why I sell Hoshizaki
👍👍👍
I have a manitowoc ice machine that will not harvest. It's the new indigo manitowoc. I had a shorted thermistor, changed that...now I think I have a bad ice thickness probe. Any suggestions??
Andre Ware if it’s a remote check the headmaster and you might have to weigh out the charge.
If you do ICE machines spend a couple of grand for boards, thermistors bridge switches etc etc for these brands on your truck ??
ell ell no way. Order as need
Ice Machines are career killers ..
ell ell no you just get good at them and realize it takes a couple visits to get them fixed.
Getting a lot of calls on Multi ZOne minisplits yet ? They dont make them as service friendly as they can be
I just sat through an all day class on those machines lol I guess their machines are to good for a harvest assist lol
JonesHvac they use an air pump for assist. Sounds good in theory but doesn’t work that well.
Chris Bivens yeah I knew some of them did but wasn’t sure if they were on all models
😎👍
Just watching that pissed me off
Give it a month and clean it again..
and again and again and again, if it's anything like fridge ice-makers and the old coated metal cube trays. it's a never ending battle until you alter the water! =p
I had this exact issue intermittently kicked my ass. The nickel was starting to peel though.
love site I/M warranty work for 15 yrs torpedo on the plate must be level!!!
Allways learn something from you!!!
nate Belden thanks for watching Nate.
Does it needs an air assist
Carlos yes it dose
after cleaning .spray silicon food grade
Wow that talk to text really came out bad but I think you get what I was saying
What makes waTer drip over the tr a y during g defrost
The ice harvesting. The water pump should be off after 45 seconds into harvest
@Nor-Cal Refrigeration & H.V.A.C athanasius but also the machine is stopping and says bin full and its 1/4 full with wet ice
@@michaelratcliff1735 could be a few things would have to see it to see the issue
Just tilt it towords you, f the brush😂
sjef oekel until the bin switch magnet doesnt close back.
Apprentice Phil its a magnet the stick!
What phone number do u manitowoc tech support
You could have just called brother
Your ice thickness also seemed to be just too thick.
POS
Next time buy a hoshizaki i/m much better machine
That Machine is a Perfect candidate for a i4000 Everpure Water filter & a Pre filter before the i4000.
OcRefrigeration,Hvac & Electrical. It is but that restaurant is all signed up with ecolab they do their filters and stuff.
