Thanks for the swift reply, it has helped me! I don’t really need any other help on this , I only was checking the powering up costs and ease of doing so. You answer is enough for me to move forwards. Thanks again, great channel and info, I can now settle back into my bed as it’s 01:53 in the morning UK time 👍🏻
Thank you! I've been considering both the Z6 ii, and possibly the Ninja V for many of the reasons you showcased. I've watched some other videos on the topic, but yours is the first one that approaches it from such a practical point of view, without it drowning in tedious details. Well balanced, well put together, informative and professional. Thanks!
I'm very happy that you have found my video useful. I will say that I worked as hard as I could to adhere to this approach since, after all, I'm coming at it from that angle -- as someone who just wants to enjoy the advantages without getting bogged down in the details. Cheers!
I learned more about the Ninja V and Nikon Z from this video than I was able to find after Googling for articles and reading Nikon's help files. Given that I am working in a bit of an extreme environment from the standpoint of videography -- rocket launches that are usually at night -- this is just what I was looking for to get a head start while I wait for my own Atomos device. Ray, thank you for making this video and posting it. It's good to see you've gone well over 1,000 subscribers since you made it, and I hope that has led to good things for you with RUclips.
Thanks Ray this is just what I needed. While I am years into photography, Video is largely new to me. I have the Z6 and Z6II and am just about to venture into video and looking at the Ninja V for documentary / Interviews primerily to beat the 30 minute limit. Your easy going presentation style is fab. Thank you.
Just wanted to say thanks for the vids. I've just recently started in with video. I traded in my old f-mount glass and D610 / D500 cameras and got a z6 and Atomos Ninja V. I also went with the tascam 70d.
Thanks for this info, very well detailed info that's not difficult to comprehend. I really like the updates from Nikon from the standpoint of showing their commitment to video moving forward with the Z system. Nikon is still catching up, but each firmware update has them inching closer to the competition, and i think the Z mount will give Nikon an edge over the competition with the potential it has. Anyways, great video and I have subscribed!
Thanks Raymond for this precious video! I have a Nikon z6II and I wouldn't want to change it because I'm quite happy with it. But I need to start working with 10-bit N-Log files and I was thinking of getting the Ninja to raise the quality of my work. Do you recommend I buy it or go directly to Z6III? Thanks a lot
That's a tough one. I'm glad I have the Ninja; it's proved useful and helped me a lot. An external monitor is very useful too and imperative to my mind when exposing LOG footage. I also have several non-recording monitors. Having said that, the options the Z6III provides are equal or better and all record in-camera. The way I see it your options are: buy a monitor/recorder for your existing Z6 or go for the Z6III but also a monitor (decent budget options are available).
Thanks for this super well explained video Raymond. I have subscribed to your channel now and am planning to keep watching to learn more from you. Cheers from Milton, ON.
Hello, I realise you recorded this RUclips some time ago now. But I’m only getting an interest now and feel you have a good explaining approach to questions. Does this setup only come with Sony battery fitting, or can you now use Nikons batteries? This is important to me as the multi use of one battery type has many benefits to me. I don’t own any Sony stuff and don’t intend to either. Most video accessories only seem to support Sony at the moment, probably because they did offer the best choice for ages, but now that’s changing! Any help gratefully received. TonyH
Hi Tony. I presume you're referring to NP-F batteries. They're made by various brands and have many uses. However, it is possible to power the camera, Ninja V and other accessories by other means, like power banks and V-mount, for example. These options are detailed in other videos in the Video Rig Playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLEOQpNvDQZwLTQ5ajxMkazsENVz_eGLfR Hope that helps.
I upgraded my Z 6ii to Pro Res Raw. When I power it on while hooked up I notice is changes the input to UHD N Log when I have pro res raw enabled even though the HDMI settings in the Z is greyed out to select NLog. ? I noticed on my Z9 I have pro res raw but have the option to switch it from SDR and NLog. Do I have that option with the atomos Ninja with Z6 ii?
Can you please advise the audio settings for the setup you have just shown. I cannot get sound on play back on my computer. Thanks for the video very useful
Hard to say what your particular problem may stem from without knowing all the variables. This is the only audio issue I've run into: ruclips.net/video/Rf_eHRJf-rY/видео.html
Very nice, easy to watch, detailed and informative video,a kind that I haven’t seen in a while! Thans for sharing it! Sir,you should consider doing this full time:)
Hey Raymond. I hope you are well my friend! I have 2 questions for you: 1/ I am considering upgrading from my Z6ii and buying the Z8. My main motivator is to be able to record 10-bit video internally and get a higher quality video image (I wouldn’t want to film in pro res RAW and have to work with and store massive files). Given you have worked with the Atomos Ninja V to capture 10 bit video from your Z6, I am wondering if you ever compared the quality of the video with the 10 bit video recorded internally with your Z9? I ask as buying a Atomos Ninja V, if it allows me to get a similar quality image from the Z8/9, would be a more cost effective option. 2/ My second question is whether you ever compared the low light performance of the Z9 for video with that of your Z6? If it is inferior, that’d be a reason to stick with the Z6ii for now and / or wait for the Z6iii. Many thanks in advance! Zak, your Kiwi friend and follower living in Hamburg
Hi Zak. I hesitate to comment since I haven't done enough side-by-side testing to give an informed answer. All I can say is that it's sure simple to use the Z8/Z9 recording internally. Of course, 8K is also a big advantage when it comes to editing options. The Z6 has a slight edge in low light though I've never really been constricted using the Z9 (or Z8) in low light. Hope this helps.
Love your work Ray :) Just joined the Ninja V party too. Although I have a Ninja Inferno but was finding it a bit large for work out of the studio with the Z6. Cheers,
Hi Mike. Since you would no longer be recording to the camera, the camera's restrictions don't apply, except for battery life. See my rig videos for more options. e.g. ruclips.net/video/IaplILbK4U0/видео.html
Hey Ray, your content helped persuade me to purchase the Ninja V for my z6ii. I recently upgraded my z6ii to prores raw. Seemed like a good idea. Those files are great, but huge and most of the time unnecessary. Tried selecting ProRes 422, for smaller files, and my Ninja won't allow me to record in 422, as it says it detects a raw signal. I'm not a massive techy, wondered if you had experienced similar and knew a way forward to record in 422? Keep up the good work, thanks from the UK.
Since I bought the Z6 I didn't take advantage of the Z6 RAW. Yes, those files are huge so used sparely. The only thing I can think of is if you have RAW enabled in camera, rather than 10-bit Log.
Nice video Raymond! Thanks. I noticed a rather dramatic change in details and sharpness. Was the footage recorded on the Ninja V sharpened in post or is it the result of the higher bit rate. Was it perhaps recorded with the lens more stopped down, because the background looks more in focus. (My wife also found your skin tone a bit undercoloured. ; )
Thanks, Eric. That is a result of the higher bit rate, though I did add minimal sharpening. Yes, rather than use an ND filter to account for ISO 800 minimum, I stopped down. My wife agrees. :)
Hi Raymond....nice video...i have about the same setup...did you ever experienced the 'Skippy' issue on the Atomos ( that the ssd drive stops recording ) ?
No, that sounds weird. What kind of SSD are you using? I have heard that the cheap ones I chose are "unreliable" but, touch wood, I haven't had any issues.
I am using a Sandisk ultra from the 'Atomos' compatibility list ... i know other users who are also experiencing the same issue with the Atamos Ninja V ... but maybe it could be related with the SSD drive..maybe i need to try the one that you use..
@@wesley5804 That sucks if it's on the compatibility list. But you never know. As I say, touch wood again, the WD Blue has been fine, and easy on the pocketbook. Used it today.
The D850 has the same External recording control, why is it different than the Z 6 II? It does not seem to trigger the Ninja V. I thought the Z 6 II had a trigger setting besides the External Recording Control. I can not get the 3d Luts from Nikon to open or execute the file after download.
Thank you for your nice Video on the Z6ii and the Ninja. You did mention, that you do also record 8 Bit internaly in the z6ii. Is it true, that the picture Control Settings and the ADL Settings only effect internaly recordet 8 bit foottage but not externaly recordet 10 bit footage ? Would you agree that if you record internaly (=8bit) you therfore get better results than if you record externaly with 8 Bit ? Would you agree to the bottem line that you either record 10bit N-Log externaly or 8 bit interanly but that 8 bit externaly recording is useless ? I am asking, because I have seen some very nice 8 Bit Footage from internaly recording and I wonder if there is a way to get the same beautyful Color results with externaly recording....without N-Log. I would like to stick to the big advantages of the video control tools on the Ninja V (plus ProRes Workflow plus SSD-Advantage) but I would like to escape from sticking to 800 ISO....
Since I haven't compared 8-Bit internal and 8-Bit external, I can't comment. As I've said, the internal 8-bit is very good, using the Flat profile -- that's how the first part of this video was recorded. But I can't see a reason to record 8-Bit externally other than file size, if that's a concern. I'm guessing one would have reconciled that when buying the Ninja V. The fact is, there's no way to get the same bit-depth in-camera as with the Ninja. The answer for you (as it is for me) is to convert your camera to record ProRes Raw with the Ninja. I'm going to send one of my Z6s in soon. Then I'll have ISO 100 again.
Hi, what codec do you recommend for us with no prores upgrade, just 10 bit n log? I was thinking MOV, just not sure how it will perform in final cut. Thanks.
The file extension .MOV is a QuickTime File Format. If you mean no ProRes RAW, just recording LOG to the Ninja, then best to choose from the Apple ProRes 422 codecs. Since .MOV is an Apple container, it is optimized for Final Cut.
Hi. I'm about to start shooting a short movie about a commercial fisherman fishing on Lake Erie. I will be shooting with Nikon z7 and thinking about ninja v. Will the external recorder benefit my project? Small video bit rates kind of scare me....I'm all about the film look so what do you think? Thanks
There are certainly advantages to recording externally. Check out some more of my examples (see Description for links). "Cinematic" or film look is more about lighting and camera movements than anything else. I'd say experiment with those before you invest in a recorder.
Hi, I'm Jim from Liverpool UK, I am just about to get a Z6 II delivered today as I already own the Ninja V which I bought to use with my GH5 mainly to be able to focus as the GH5 screen is too small for me to see if it's in focus even with Zebra etc, and of course it has the added value of being able to record directly to the SSD, that said I still haven't worked out the relationship between recording log profiles and LUTS and how to add and apply them in Final Cut Pro, I bought the 14 inch Macbook M1 Pro in order to use FCPX because I read that the M1 Pro can handle ProRes, DaVinci and Premier Pro better than PC's, but coming from a totally PC background Mac OS is also proving to be a bit of a challenge, I'm just wondering if you could point me to a RUclips channel where I could learn how to apply and use LUTS especially in FCPX, I've been shooting photos since the 35mm Ilford and Kodak days so I know my way around photography but not cinematography and it's proving harder to understand than I thought, well thanks for your informative review, cheers, Jim
Hi Jim ... Ray from Wolverhampton. I transitioned to Mac 16 years ago, so PCs are almost alien to me these days and I find Mac OS entirely intuitive, so I'd say hang in, it'll get easier. The first thing to learn your way around is the Finder. Look up a couple of videos. I own an M1 Mac and it's a joy to use for video editing (I have a couple of videos on that purchase). There are also many tutorials for FCPX. Ripple Training is good. Check out Apple's resources: www.apple.com/ca/final-cut-pro/resources/ I might direct you to my video comparison of 8-bit vs 10-bit log: ruclips.net/video/S_SNi0KB5Vo/видео.html and the short section on application. Basically I just follow Nikon instructions. Those are linked in the description. Good luck and all the best for 2023.
I have Nikon z6ii and dji RS3 gimbal, edit in Davinci Resolve. I am satisfied with even 8 bit, but since the z6 screen is not turnable, it is really hard to use it with a gimbal, especially while holding it parallel to the ground. I wanted to use iPhone/Android as the external monitor. Tried Nikon Snapbridge and Camera Connect+Control. The wifi speed of the camera is really pathetic, 2-2.5MB/s, so the Liveview is really laggy when connected with wifi to the apps. Camera Connect+Contol lets it to be connected via USB. Super smooth Liveview, but a huge setup from Nikon - when connected with USB, the record option is disabled. I really don't want any external monitors, but only the smartphone with the decent Liveview speed. But seems it won't work.
@@RaymondParkerPhoto 10bit! But I found what it was, so on Nikon z6 ii's on firmware 1.40, when you're on the HDMI panel and then go to advanced, if you enable raw output, (no recording to card) nlog is locked to ON. That's why I wasn't able to change it, but it does record raw to my ninja atomos V so I am having no issues now. Thank you for reaching out! I didn't expect you to actually answer this!! Cheers!!!
Yes, I still use it, though not as much as I did 2 years ago. I still have two (soon to be one) Z6 cameras and I also use it to record EV for these tutorials and reviews. But, yes, the internal 10-bit on recent Nikon cameras has reduced the need for external recording.
I noticed you skin tone changed when you converted over to external recording on the Ninja V. Not sure if I like it as much. Not as warm looking. But maybe your skin is more pale?
Hi Jay. Thanks for the comment. Yes, definitely different. I'd say (well, my wife did) that the truth is somewhere in the middle. Certainly, the ungraded Flat profile is warm -- on a monitor calibrated to Rec 709, quite red. Depends, of course, what you're watching it on. Though, as I admit in my newest video (on 8K) colour grading isn't my strong point, I did put quite a bit of work into the 10-bit edit.
The fact Nikon forces us to use the Ninja V and none of the other Atomos recorders is BS! We have to pay an additional $200 to 'unlock' the RAW recording feature - that's ALREADY IN OUR CAMERAS, and only record RAW into the Ninja V! God I hate Nikon and it's games.
The fact that Nikon was the first to offer RAW over HDMI is, to my mind, a pretty fair "game." That they chose to charge for the camera conversion is not without precedent -- Atomos themselves charge for certain updated features. The Z6 is supported by other Atomos recorders, such as the Shogun/Shogun Ultra. The Ninja now comes in 2 flavours: the (improved) Ninja and Ninja Ultra, both useable with the Z6 and other Nikon cameras.
I never hear anyone mention one of the main reasons I would consider buying a ninja. Cards overheat real fast on my z6ii. 23 minutes of 4k recording at room temperature (CFexpress card). Ninja would solve that problem I believe. Am I thinking right? Thanks.
Is an external recorder right for your use case? Is there anything else you'd like to know about the Ninja V?
Hey Raymond. Nice video! But what's wrong with the audio? Audio is important as well, it sounds as if there's a cloth on the microphone..

Hi Ray, I am trying to capture 4K60 on my Ninja V using Nikon Z6ii. is this feature available in Ninja V? or am i not doing something correctly.
The Ninja V is capable of recording 4K 60p. That's all I can tell you.
@@RaymondParkerPhoto When I plus in the Ninja V to N Z6ii, its not enabling the 4K60p. W/o its fine
Thanks!!
I have one,Comes tomorrow
Can you control autofocus from the atonos ninja v or only from the nikon z6 screen?
just z6
Check out Apple's resources: www.apple.com/ca/final-cut-pro/resources/
I might direct you to my video comparison of 8-bit vs 10-bit log: ruclips.net/video/S_SNi0KB5Vo/видео.html and the short section on application. Basically I just follow Nikon instructions. Those are linked in the description. Good luck and all the best for 2023.
@@RaymondParkerPhoto Thanks Raymond I'll take a look at your suggestions
On my z6 ii, N-log recording is on "ON" but it's greyed out, it says some other setting is interfering with it but I can't seem to find it :C
What output data depth have you set?
@@RaymondParkerPhoto 10bit! But I found what it was, so on Nikon z6 ii's on firmware 1.40, when you're on the HDMI panel and then go to advanced, if you enable raw output, (no recording to card) nlog is locked to ON.
That's why I wasn't able to change it, but it does record raw to my ninja atomos V so I am having no issues now. Thank you for reaching out! I didn't expect you to actually answer this!! Cheers!!!
Ah, you're recording RAW!
@@RaymondParkerPhoto Yes, I have now disabled it for the compressed prores raw and extra camera runtime!
do u still use the ninja v? if the next z6 will have 10bit 422 internally it will be for a bit useless?
Yes, I still use it, though not as much as I did 2 years ago. I still have two (soon to be one) Z6 cameras and I also use it to record EV for these tutorials and reviews. But, yes, the internal 10-bit on recent Nikon cameras has reduced the need for external recording.
Quick Question - Can you record 10bit - non N-log externally and avoid the whole iso-800 bump?
Not that I'm aware of. Set up as I show, the camera defaults to 800. You could always have your camera modified to shoot ProRes Raw.
@@RaymondParkerPhoto Thank you very much for the quick reply. Appreciate your work.
@@Snailmale7 In my opinion you can record 10 bit without N-log
@@mattikarha3093 thank you. I was looking for a way to get around the ISO 800 restriction when recording in N-Log
Hi Raymond! I am not able to click view assist, what do you think is the problem? :o
Hi Roberta. If you mean View Assist on the Z6, I can only guess you're missing some other part of the Log equation. Suggest rechecking settings.
Thanks for being so quick! I found out what the problem was :D @@RaymondParkerPhoto
Which video editing software do you use?
Final Cut X.
@@RaymondParkerPhoto Thanks, I have the Ninja V and learned a lot from your video on it.
Why didnt you get the nikon z6ii
I have 2 Z6s already.
much better the internal 8bit flat that you made in first part
There's one other downside of using log and that's when filming under low light the quality isn't as good.
I didn't understand any of the pros or cons...:'D
I really hate how they make customer wasting money on unnecessary equipments when they could've just make it internal 10bit
10-bit is not the only reason to record externally in this case. There is now the Z9, but do the cost analysis.
@@RaymondParkerPhoto yeah it cost like 4X z6 price
The Ninja now comes in 2 flavours: the (improved) Ninja and Ninja Ultra, both useable with the Z6 and other Nikon cameras.
no uses edit 4k or 8k, you use proxy to edit, I got mac pro with 32 gig graphic card, and I still use proxy.
Used proxy when I made this video. No need now, even for 8K, with Mac Studio Ultra.
I never hear anyone mention one of the main reasons I would consider buying a ninja. Cards overheat real fast on my z6ii. 23 minutes of 4k recording at room temperature (CFexpress card). Ninja would solve that problem I believe. Am I thinking right? Thanks.
Hmmm. What cards? I've never had that issue. No problems with Ninja media for sure.
