Great info. I think I settled on ProRes HQ because I shoot in natural light, and a lot of shots I cannot reshoot. File transfer and storage are getting more and more challenging. One minor thing, gigabyte should be GB not Gb. 1B=8b.
Hi there and thanks for the comment. I agree with you on the transfer and storage challenge which I'm finding even more of an issue shooting in 8K for more flexibility. Thanks for pointing out the GB vs Gb I try to get it right but sometimes they slip through!
Thanks for this. I'm still experimenting with the various ProRes options (excluding RAW) using my newly-purchased Ninja V. So far the HQ and 422 work well, but the sizes are definitely huge. Like you, I think the 8-bit is fine, especially for RUclips, but LOG does give more options in grading, if you're willing to put in the work.
This is exactly what I needed. I did the exact same thing. Got a new Ninja V for Christmas, put it on the best codec, and then I looked at the file sizes and my jaw dropped. Now I'm trying to find the balance for the DNxHR as well.
Thanks you for a very informative video Mr Adrian. As a beginner who is interested in video and without previous knowledge (beside press the button) its really hard to swallow all the data at once. It's never too late to learn something new and improve oneself's capabilities. Thanks again and looking forward for your next videocentric video. Cheers!!!
Well done video ! this was very helpful to learn the differences with the options. I have shot some video with my Z6ii but plan on doing more so I just bought small rig setup and the ninja v which hopefully arrive soon!
I generally shoot 10 bit N-log at ProRes 422 to the Ninja V. I primarily create 10 bit HDR videos using Edius Pro 9 as the program has a Nikon color profile that makes grading easier.
Thanks for that, I hadn't come across Edius Pro 9 so will take a look as I have been having a few challenges with the Nikon N-Log LUT in both Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. Have you found that it works ok with Edius?👍
AF8Images : You can view this link if you have a 4K HDR TV. No grading involved with this video, I just dropped the Nikon color correction on the timeline of Edius Pro 9. ruclips.net/video/6tVlD3fIxUw/видео.html
Hallo Adrian, I have been watching your channel for some years now ( and I am subscribed ). I find your videos very informative and easy to understand and use them often as a reference. I have just taken the jump and purchased the Ninja V and hence dug out this old video in order to get up to speed. One thing I am confused about is the following. In the lower Avid Codecs like SQ, they are 8-bit, but you were doing tests on 10-bit also ? If I want to recorn 10-bit n-log, can I use the 8-bit SQ format without loosing data ? I would appreciate some clarification. Many thanks in advance.
It is an interesting consideration. In checking my Ninja V with loaded 1TB Card Pro Res HQ was giving recording time of 2:56 vs 422 giving 4:27 & LT 6:25. In comparing the content, I can see the HQ is better, but the Vast File Size is a worry. Looking at the comments made already, I think I may record in 422. As I am a novice, I am considering using Film Convert to give a Final "Film Look" to my content. I will be using multiple cameras, so may need to match colours. My Z6 is set to record in flat. I use the Z6 LUT. I am wondering if I should "bake in" the LUT, as that is what I tend to use in FCPX? Although if I am going to use a "Film Look" I would keep it flat, without using the Nikon Lut. Is this the correct thing to do? Anyways, Thank You AF8 Images for your videos!! Really enjoy watching, & keep up the tech tips. Best Wishes, J
nice tuto. what is your setup to switch easily between photo and video ? i looked the smallrig cage but it must be tedious to disassemble everytjing for photo. which adapter did you buy for holding monitor ? smallrig 2346 ?
Hi I just purchased the ninja v alongside my Z6. I think like you I know the photography side of the Z6 fairly well but I’m only just attempting to use it for video. I’ve just set up a podcast and tried a video vlog to find the huge file sizes quite scary. I shot in pro res hq 10 bit log and edited on Davinci which worked well and I was amazed at the room for bringing back highlights and shadows was unbelievable however the storage terrified me! As I’m hoping to load up to RUclips there is a setting in davinci but was wondering what codec to use before the further compression on RUclips? It seems daft to record so many gigabytes then reduce to much smaller MP3 files so is it best to record in 4K or 1080p in a lower codec for the social media sites? This information seems hard to find - apologies for the long question! Thanks 🙏 Phil
Phil, if I'm honest I drop back to 8 bit flat profile for many of my videos which is fine for YT. I've been experimenting with 10 bit ProRes LT and N-log (which will be next week's video) as this seems to be a good trade between file size and additional dynamic range, however, I have been having a few challenges with the N-Log LUT in Premiere Pro. Where the recording codec is important is more if you're matching multi camera setups and also if you are encoding and decoding repeated times. If not then Prores LT will likely be ok. Then when you export from DaVinci Resolve chose the YT setting as this will have been optimised for YT which is the same as my workflow using Premiere Pro. Hope this helps a bit. Adrian
Hi James, not this is all without the need to send the camera back to Nikon. That is only required for ProRes RAW which I haven't felt the need to do. All of these codecs are purely with an unmodified Z6 + Ninja V. Hope this helps, Adrian
Do you know why the átomos with the newest firmware (6.3) cannot récord prores RAW linear? It only lets me récord nlog but with the past firmware I can récord linear proress raw witch is more saturared color space and it mekes me feel the sensation of more dinsmic range than n log when I use the false color to expose my shot.
Gerald Undone is very hard to follow. He talks way too fast, while throwing on you tons of highly technical info - all that in 2 seconds. It becomes confusing and hard to absorb. He should do ads for Red Bull.
Which codec are you using if you're using a Ninja V? What's the trade-off between quality and space for you?
Great info. I think I settled on ProRes HQ because I shoot in natural light, and a lot of shots I cannot reshoot. File transfer and storage are getting more and more challenging.

Thanks for the video and the info, could make demonstration how do you set the camera with Atomos and the settings for both so we can learn from.

Milorad, it's certainly been a learning curve for m, luckily I had a bit more time during lockdown to work on it! Keep safe, Adrian

Heyyy, bit late to the party. Does the Atmos allow you to control the camera through the monitor...like focus, shutter speed, aperture, & that? Thanks
Hi there, it will allow you to start and stop video recording but not control the camera settings at the level you're thinking I'm afraid.
I have found that recording at prores lt is very good for RUclips or social media sites.
When recording for client work I capture at prores 422.
Super video! Thanks! How's the editing flow with prores? How much ram do you use? I'm guessing it's final cut.

When you say you're recording time was 2:56, 4:27 and 6:26 are you saying hours:minutes? in 8 bit?
Awesome video. Can you tell me how big are nlog file straight from ninja 5? I can't find that info anywhere. Thanks

Hello, so my question can The nikon 3d lut that is provided by nikon be used on the z50 when shot in flat or is it only for the z6?

AF8Images I will be following closely trying to learn. Thanks for sharing!
Question. Is that all with sending the camera back to Nikon for the update?

sir, can nikon z6 on atmos ninja V record with DNX HR HQX? or just on prores?
It looks like only Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 can produce DNX. Please let me know if/when you find out Nikon starts to produce DNx.
In camera 1080 p is about 25 Mnits/ sec.....144 is in 4 k
Actually internally the z6 @ 1080 30fps has only 28Mbps not 144
