      What's hilarious about this game is that I bought it for the switch accidentally as I thought it was no mans sky. Played it a bit and immediately got bored, sold it later to buy no mans sky. Had no idea the game actually had this much depth to it. Might try it again but yeah, I'm enjoying the fuck out of no mans sky still 70 hours in.
      Edit: Just kidding the game I accidentally bought was actually called "Outer worlds", this is the game I actually meant to buy. But No mans sky is somehow the game I actually ended up with in the end.

    The three anglers are actually perfectly positioned in such a way that if the player were to not give any input at all, you'll always slowly drift right past them. There is absolutely no clipping involved. Just a really close shave. I thought it pretty obvious that this was intended to simply be a tense moment for players to put to the test their new-found knowledge that let's them get past unnoticed. I personally loved it, don't know why you seemed to be so confused by the design choice.

    I actually managed to find the vessel by random chance. I flew into the red section and froze up upon seeing the angler fish, and luckily managed to bypass them until hitting the center of the zone. From there I looked around with my scout probe because I was curious and noticed the entrance of the vessel’s room was not glowing and much more hidden, unlike every other entrance. When I went back with the warp core I ended up nearly being eaten by one of the anglerfish. I didn't get as much boost as I wanted before getting close to it so ended up with it barreling towards me as I held my breath hoping it would miss. My understanding of the problem you found with the quantum moon was simply that it's own thick, cloudy atmosphere stopped you from observing it during entry. I hope that makes sense?

    • @FBracht
      @FBracht 4 года назад +50

      It makes sense, but still doesn't explain it consistently. If the thick clouds block your view, it means the thick cloud around the moon is not PART of the moon itself, but rather a different element. But if that's the case, then the moon can never be observed to begin with, seeing as all you can see from the outside it this cloudy exterior. Therefore, the clouds count as being the moon. But if that's the case, they can't block your view from the moon, because... they are... the moon.
      My take has to do with light: I believe the clouds are so thick that for a moment you can't really see anything as you traverse them, causing a situation like the one when you turn off all lights in a dark place. This un-tangles the moon, making it move. If the clouds were solid, you would be moved along with the moon just like it happens when you stand in the quantum shards, but the moons are not solid, so they don't take you with them.

Effectively, this combines both the lessons of quantum entanglement (or at least the darkness part) and quantum imaging. The fact that the screen doesn't go totally dark is probably more of an artistic choice then anything else.

    So to sum up Dark Bramble for anyone who doesn't understand it or maybe missed a point or two, I believe I have a fairly complete picture of what it is. So dark bramble is a plant. Where dark bramble is now, a large ice planet used to exist. This ice planet contained jellyfish and anglerfish. At some point slightly before the Nomai arrived in the system, a dark bramble seed crashed into the ice planet. It's never stated where the original seed came from, but it's safe to assume that there are other dark brambles out in the universe, and that this seed made it's way here from the destruction of another planet infested by a dark bramble. Speaking of which, the dark bramble seed burrowed its way into the core of the ice planet, and from there it slowly grew in mass before smashing the ice planet into pieces. Most of these pieces can be seen still attached to the dark bramble, but a portion of them were scattered across the system, including one in giant's deep, and another on timber hearth (this one only recently landed here, so it's safe to assume the seed was orbiting around the sun in space for a long time before it finally collided with something) The chunk located on giant's deep contained jellyfish in/on it, and they now inhabit the deep core of the planet. Another chunk which carried an anglerfish landed on the ember twin. due to the harsh environment, the anglerfish died and decayed to form the anglerfish cave. The Nomai vessel arrived shortly after the initial destruction of the ice planet, and was caught inside the rapidly expanding pocket dimensions within the seed. A piece of art on a wall seems to depict an unusually small looking dark bramble reaching out to the nearby vessel and surrounding it with vines, so it's safe to assume that the bramble grew and captured the vessel. Also of note, it's likely that the signal the Nomai were detecting was/is the exact same signal as the quantum fluctuations signal you can pick up on your scope. This would imply that the Nomai arrived in the solar system at the location of the quantum moon when it orbits dark bramble, since the eye and the quantum moon share the same properties, physics, and sounds. The Vessel is large enough that it was probably bumping against the newly emerged bramble, which aggravated it, and cause it to engulf the Vessel.
    The physics: dark bramble appears to warp space in a fashion that shouldn't be possible. It's unlikely that the seeds shrink the player, because multiple different seeds in different locations can lead to the same location (the timber hearth seed and the seed inside the dead anglerfish skeleton both lead feldspar's camp). It's my belief that the seeds are portals to pocket dimensions warped by space. Time still works exactly the same as normal, as the supernova will still go off after 22 minutes when you are within the pocket dimensions. Also, the supernova will still kill the player, which means that the pocket universes are indeed located with the solar system, and most likely, are actually located within the dark bramble. So it's not so much that the player is shrinking, but that the space you enter is expanding visually.

    • @sploofmcsterra4786
      @sploofmcsterra4786 4 года назад +22

      Fun fact: the pocket dimension is actually placed far out from the sun. If you put your scout probe into the seed on Timber Hearth, a big black circle will appear in space, and if you go to it it acts like a silent white hole.

    The interloper's ice melts as it approaches the system's star. This heating of the interloper is what led to the ghost matters "container" exploding, as the pressure began growing exponentially. This is recorded in the Naomi's journal at the broken "container." Also, on the Storm planet, the theory of ghost matter not traveling through water is confirmed. On one of the islands, where the other astronaut is located, there's a tunnel with ghost matter in it. While above water, you'll get hurt trying to walk through the tunnel. However, when the island is submerged, you can travers the tunnel without getting hurt at all. The fact that the theory is proved with no direction other than the player having to actively prove it themselves is a testament to the writing in this game alone.

    For those confused about the interloper:
    The Interloper likely started its life as a strange form of gas that gradually became solid as the region it was in cooled down. This formed the "shell" of matter we see in game.
    This shell is non-harmful to life, as evidenced by our ability to rub up against it, or possibly that ghost matter is only harmful in its gaseous state. Another possibility is that Ghost Matter only becomes dangerous as a result of those small crystals becoming hot/exposed to oxygen/etc. We also know through in game dialogue that Ghost matter very slowly dissipates.
    So as this solid chunk of exotic matter hurtled through space, it developed an icy rocky build up around it that gradually became the Interloper. The exotic matter inside seems to have been gradually become pressurized and may have even erupted beforehand, but was contained by the ice/water of the interloper. When The Interloper strayed close to the system we see in game, it became caught by the sun's gravity well. As the comet and its deadly payload approached the sun, the ice containing it began to melt, which just so happened to time up with the matter inside having high pressure. The Nomai observed the pressure only increased as they grew closer to the sun and unfortunately were too late to stop it.
    The interloper ruptures enough that ghost matter crystals rapidly shower the entire system as it approaches the sun. All non-aquatic life rapidly dies. The Nomai in the core are peppered with Ghost Matter crystals.
    200,000 years later, the interloper's shell has mostly reformed with new "backwards" facing spires as a result of its earlier explosion. Most of the Ghost Matter has dissipated and some of the crystals has even stopped emitting their deadly field.

    One thing i love about this game is how diferent your experience can be from any other player. Not just because of the non linearity of the game but also because of how the story is structured, it allows for you to interpret it in any given way because most of the time you don't have all the pieces of the story yet, leading you to fill in the gaps with info that others might not think about.
    The best example in my playthrough was right at the end, somehow i got to the core of Ash Twin and to the Vessel before ever going into the black hole forge, so my first thought was the obvious " oh my god i have to deactivate the loop if i want to get to the eye", but right after that i had a second, totally wrong realization of " wait i haven't actually been inside the black hole forge, of course !! If i go there i can make a warp core or find one leftover and use that to power the Vessel". I then made my way to the black hole forge, fully convinced i would find a warp core there, and when i didn't i felt completly crushed, I assumed wrong, there was no other way to power the Vessel, I had to use the core at Ash Twin and risk dooming the entire solar system.
    This kind of interactive storytelling where my own choices and personal circumstances inferred how i reacted to a story beat that likely wasn't even intended by the devs is pure magic that only a game as beautifully crafted as outer wilds could ever achieve

    I think the ghost matter shot out through the tubes in the comet and since it was so highly compressed it still spread out everywhere afterward instead of going in straight lines.
    The Quantum Moon has a foggy atmosphere that blocks your view of the moon as a whole since the atmosphere and the moon are not quite one and the same, evidenced by the bit of atmosphere being left behind when the moon goes somewhere else. I agree it's a little contrived though.

    There's an in-game reason for the duplicate text. Those texts are conversations between two locations, and so there's a log of them at each location. You'll notice with the projection stones that some of the text is orange and some is blue. That represents which one is the local side vs the remote side of the conversation (I forget which is which). So when you find the same conversation twice, on one side, some of the text is blue, but on the other side, the text that was blue is orange

Poke was very concerned about the pressure the sun was putting on the dense contents of the comet, so that seems to imply that it exploded while the comet was close enough to the sun to allow for the ghost matter to shoot out immediately. If not for that, with all that pressure with nowhere for it to vent, maybe the Interloper itself would have exploded.

The complete opposite of massive open galaxy/universe games where you have total freedom and limitless time. But I think that’s what makes the game beautiful. The system is hand crafted with crazy attention to detail, and there’s this weird mix of joy and wonder and sadness as you see incredible sights and learn about the rich history of the Nomai, but come to understand how temporary everything is. In the game. In life.

    Ghost Matter is like a mist, small enough to travel through holes. There are tons of holes and passageways naturally formed in the Interloper. The core ruptured, and the ghost matter simply flew through the tunnels and likely out the crack that you use to enter the comet, where it then spread instantly throughout the system. It’s effects are indeed mitigated, if not completely nullified when in water, as shown in lore when the Hearthians were able to survive the rupturing core, and in gameplay where Gabbro’s island is hurled into space and dropped back into the sea, the ghost matter in a tunnel disappears and you can pass through the area safely.

    I didn’t have a problem with how the Anglerfish were handled. It’s spelt out to you in Ember Twin that they’re blind, and considering they’re in the area that forms the last part of the solar system you go to, before reaching the eye and hence the ending, it makes sense for the biggest challenge to be there. What I did have a problem with, was how you’re not really told at all, about how to get to station core in Ember Twin via teleportation. I had to look that up online.
    I’m unsure whether this or Pathologic 2 is my GotY. Both left a pretty profound impact on me. Outer Wilds is more fun than Pathologic 2, but Pathologic 2 arguably advances the medium more with regards to games being art. It also has an extremely dense city. For me, Outer Wilds is a game that got ruined by all the praise, I was expecting way more than it was, sadly.
    So I think everyone got that one game that they thought they should love, everyone else loves, but you just.. eh.. Outer Wilds is a good game, I'd give it a 7,5/10ish - but it really didn't connect to me the same way it did with others and I'm ultra excited to hear why you loved it so much.
    I thought the exploration was rather tedious and rarely rewarded you with interesting visuals or stories, especially ember twin and brittle hollow were awful to navigate and traverse, and most buildings used the same assets to the point where I didn't really look at houses anymore, they had the same skeleton and the same "scroll-case" standing there. To be fair, I played this game years after it's original hype, so I absolutely knew that I was in for a special ride and thus absolutely had high expectations: I knew this was good, I was sure I would love it.
    Everything was .. fine, but never really reached that magic note. I was in a constant state of "yes, this is interesting, I'm sure this will lead to something really impressive - either visually or narratively!" .. but I just waited... and waited.. the whole game..
    *Spoilers going forward:*
    Giants Deep and Dark Bramble looked great, but there wasn't really a lot to do or see - And what we saw wasn't that impressive either, in my head I had way more interesting ideas. It all lacked some sort of scale or gravitas, which is kind of sad when talking about the literal end of the universe. I didn't really care about the nomai or my friends, I barely interacted with them. And when I did, we talked in an immersion breaking campy way - I witnessed the death of the universe and my character barely cared.
    I get it, it's about the exploration and your own adventure, but when most the things I found were underwhelming.. I wasn't really excited about exploration anymore. I think exploration for the sake of exploration just doesn't work for me - So I wanted to find a great story, or impressive sci-fi visuals, which were both fine, but not worthy of 10/10 masterpiece reviews. I really loved the travel and movement mechanics, mario-galaxy-orbiting along the moons was very fun and felt great, gravity is always such a fun concept in games imo
    Outer Wilds made me realize one thing: I rather think about a story that's presented to me, than work to find a story - I just don't have the curiosity to look for something I might not find interesting, especially if I am not invested in it yet

The energy from the sun when the comet gets close to the sun was the tick it needed to explode, and it would have exited the same way you came in, with the gap caused by the sun. It is strongly implied ghost matter operates like an electromagnetic wavelength and can travel through most objects, with water being a rare material that reflects it.

    I’ve only really looked something up when I was completely stumped how to get into a certain room, or more prominently, getting through dark bramble. One example would be the statue room in Giants deep. Granted I felt stupid after realizing how simple it was.

      The Statue Island in Giant's Deep was the funniest part of my playthrough. I swear I went to the planet looking for it specifically, and when I was flying around the ocean looking for it, IT FELL ON TOP OF MY SHIP. I didn't had to submerge and then emerge inside it, it did that work for me in reverse. I was laughing for a solid minute when that happened!

      A) I looked up every location of the warping towers in ash twin and somehow COMPLETELY MISSED the scroll in Black Hole Forge that literally gives you the answer
      B) I knew the secret was around the Jellyfish and Feldspar used them, but I never connected the dots I had to go under it
      All in all, I felt really dumb after spoiling me of the surprise.

      I looked up how to get to the sun station (I knew where the warp was but not how to get in) when I already, not a few loops earlier went to the dried lake on ember twin and did the exact same thing but the opposite way, waiting for the sand to fill to get past a line of cacti.. His complaints about the puzzles he mentions makes me think of the one puzzle in the game that made me bitter enough to check on a guide just to realize I literally just got unlucky with every single one of almost a half dozen times I went to a location that I never realized something about it. The puzzles he complains about sound like gripes about his personal experience struggling with them, but I realize I would probably make the same complaint about the puzzle I couldn't get past. The revelation felt extremely mundane and left me criticizing how the puzzle was structured, while still recognizing that it was clever of the developers to make that puzzle.

    the comment about Zelda games triggered me. I know it doesn't matter and he included it for humor but this game's biggest inspirations were OoT and Majora's Mask and it really shows, both of those games are really enjoyable for a lot of the same reasons as this one

    • @FBracht

      Majora's Mask for sure, but OoT? No way. What do you think is inspired directly by OoT in Outer Wilds?

  • @graysonpeddie
    @graysonpeddie 7 месяцев назад

    I don't like the art style of Outer Wilds, but I like that there are only a few planets to explore, but then it felt kind of limiting to me. I like that landing a ship in No Man's Sky is much easier compared to Outer Wilds and that No Man's Sky lets me explore planets to my heart's content in Creative mode and the Creative Mode is the best feature of No Man's Sky. The downside of No Man's Sky is infinite planets and repetition and I don't like that I only have finite amounts of oxygen while exploring a planet. So what I would like is somewhere in between No Man's Sky and Outer Wilds: only a few planets to explore but no combat and nothing to worry about the danger aspects of Outer Wilds such as landing a ship without breaking the glass. Another critique of No Man's Sky is the copy-andddd-pasting of space stations that very much looked the same from star system to star system.
    I played with Starship Simulator demo that is in work-in-progress and I am hopeful that the game will come out by the end of the year. I like what I have seen so far, especially the part where I can get the starship from cold-and-dark state to flight-ready mode and I love it a lot. In the meantime, I can just explore the underwater world of Subnautica in creative mode and that is what I like about. Oh, and at least I have Final Fantasy XII and The Talos Principle 1 and 2 to explore, now that I'm done with all the puzzles. I would always want to explore the worlds and outer space to my heart's content, but again, for space exploration, just not as infinite as No Man's Sky, but not smaller than Outer Wilds.
    Oh, and I like the "no gameplay mechanics" aspects of the game called "Dear Esther," but it just felt too linear for my liking. It's just a walking simulator, which I like, but I realize walking simulators are not the same as open world genre. I tried Eastshade, but despite it claiming to be an open world game, it's not. You get rewarded for being a painter which I do not care about and that reward means more worlds to explore. I've have to collect feathers so I can pay the toll road. Don't get me wrong; I like puzzles and I like JRPG, but there are times when I would like to take a break from all the gameplay mechanics and just explore the worlds the way I want to explore. You know, just relax near the beach if you want to. And just explore the cities similar to Starfield but that meant that there's combat and I do not want to get into survival or combat if I do not want to.

    I have no free time & don't enjoy hanging out in media that's set in space & so will never play this game, but it's so obviously finely crafted and I was really curious about how the story comes together in the end. This was the perfect review to satisfy that curiosity; very cool of you to clearly mark the different levels of spoilers--for people who don't want them, obviously, but also for people like ME who just want to know whether the video is going to fully explain the plot to them finally, lol.
    Also Majora's Mask is, like, fine & I know it's a Classic(tm) and all but it's super refreshing to hear An Video Games Person Online outright say those games are boring. They so are. I enjoyed wind waker back in the gamecube days + the "run around ignoring the plot" gameplay in botw is pleasant but I'm not about to give Nintendo credit for any of that when they refuse to use their insane amounts of money and clout to hire, like... any actual writers. at all. 25:50 The reason the ghost matter didn't kill the primitive Hearthians is not because of water but because they lived in their planet's metallic core and that core is made of a special ore that (somehow) shields them. The ore is special enough that the Nomai have mined it to line the Ash Twin Project chamber with. The Nomai even mention only mining just enough of the ore that they need, leaving enough to make sure the Hearthians will have resources on their planet when they evolve further.

  • @JesseAnderson
    @JesseAnderson 4 года назад

    While the video is quite old, I figured I'd add this. The interloper explosion likely didn't wipe out timber hearth because the moon at the time was positioned perfectly to block the vast majority of the ghost matter. It's unclear how some still got to the planet, but compared to other planets the amount on timber hearth is decidedly low. You can tell the moon blocked the interloper explosion because of the giant crater full of ice crystals that seemingly used to be full of ghost matter. For whatever reason the matter is completely absent in the vacuum of space so it adds up that none is left on the moon. I assume this is because the gas is trapped in its solid state due to how cold it is in space

      That's not in. Ghost matter doesn't have en effect under water (as demonstrated in the cave on Gabbro's island). The whole game is about these intertwining threads so if you happened to have found those solutions late I wouldn't consider that a problem, because on the other hand I've seen people find those solutions immediately while playing, so it can happen in any order really. I do agree that the anglerfish one is more punishing since it resets the loop, but as long as you line up your entry, you can have considerable speed before entering the orange seed. I've even seen someone go in with just their suit on su the anglerfish wouldn't hear them at all

    I liked the review and I know this might sound like Im a fanboy who is desperatly trying to defend this game but I really dont understand your points where you talked about the downsides. You criticised the way you have to land on the quantum moon but its basically a core mechanic of the game that is so fundamental that I honestly think you just have to accept it as what it is. Otherwise you could criticise the whole game and start to argue that its not realistic etc. Also I dont think its a bad thing that you cant "access" certain areas or planets until you find out how. This is also one of the core concepts of the game and I dont really understand why and how you criticise this. For me this was part of the fascination of the game, that when you get stuck somewhere and you dont know what to do you just visit another planet in the next timeloop until you find the bit of information and you remember what you can do with this knowledge. As you said its a Exploration and puzzle game. Explore, gain knowledge and piece it all together.
