  • In this video, we start a playthrough of the Washington DC map in the awesome game called Rail Route! It's sort of like a CTC operator / dispatching type game that can give us a avenue to talk about railroad operations on a bigger scale and talk a little signal design as well. Hope you guys like it!

      Gradually tighten up the gauge preferably around corner, if you do it after a set of points they'll probably try blame the signalling department too.

    I enjoyed watching particularly to see what kind of switch/signal setup you went for. You managed to pack trains much more densely than I have so far, so very valuable for me to watch.

  • @Storage_Unit
    @Storage_Unit 2 года назад +6

    Ay, glad to see a dev for another train game I enjoy is playing the one I've helped make :)
    Kinda hilarious to see you're doing D.C., though. That map was *specifically* designed to be ridiculously tight and unforgiving, so that even I couldn't figure out a "perfect" setup for its junctions. It's TOUGH. Good luck with it! Though from the beginning of the episode, I see you've already done some messing around on it in a previous playthrough, so you at least have some experience on it already, so that's good.
    Speaking of QoL features - there are T O N S of features the game doesn't really tell the player exist. We're working on making them easier to grasp, but one example:
    Auto Signals as of 1.4 (Latest major update) can be "manually" routed. You mentioned how you didn't want it to go straight from point A to B, but instead wanted it to take the other route - When setting the route, use the scroll wheel to toggle between every available option. VERY useful, especially in Rush Hour, where the exact sequence of trains can be life or death.
    I'd go on with more tips - There's a goldmine of knowledge to learn about how to play this game - but I think this'll do for now. If you want more, don't be shy - The community discord has a help and tips chat, and a decent hunk of active community members are more than willing to answer any number of questions you may have, or give various tips on layouts, automation, contracts, etc. I'm also more than willing to help with anything, though that's probably because any chance to flex my knowledge about the game is an opportunity I'll take instantly : )

    • @Hyce777
      @Hyce777  2 года назад +5

      Hey! Cheers :) so glad to see you here. I am in the community discord, just have not been terribly active as of yet. I'll have to come stop in. That's very cool on the route setting! And I mostly picked D.C. so that I wouldn't fudge up pronunciations of the town names :P

    As a side note, my grandfather worked for BART both as a lineman, and then later as a design engineer. One of the pieces of software he had was super similar to this- ran on windows XP, and was just called Train Dispatcher. It was super similar to this (albeit a lot more clunky of a UI) when railroute came out, it instantly reminded me of it. I'm kind of curious If you know about/played that older Dispatcher game

    • @Hyce777

    Love this game! I think its really worth the money!
    The only two things I don't like is a) the trains need to be upgraded to turn automatically. The Train Driver knows to do this. b) As you will also know, the whole CTC is electronically interlocked, you should not be able to make conflicting movements (perhaps this at least should have been made an upgarde to indicate better/modern systems although even in the old days they had mechanical interlocking).
    Yes, I'm aware its just a game and as long as you remember that, its fun to play. EDIT: oh yes, just right-click to reverse the relevant train

      A dispatcher can always "pause" the real thing by not clearing any signals. Of course, everything comes to a complete stop in short order and, absent a very good reason for taking this action, the dispatcher will quickly become a former dispatcher. "Would you like fries with that?" is likely to be in their next radio or wire transmission.

It would be interesting to have proper 3D modelled historic signal boxes with lever frames of varying sizes and designs, as well as animated passing trains, token machines, block bells.
