10 years of periodically trying to get my machine to stitch has come to an end! I just found you today Abi and am delighted I did! I have tried everything, over the years, that I thought could be possibly wrong and was about to throw my machine out! I never imagined it could be the needle position that was out! I hope after a little oiling, cleaning and a few more adjustments, I may be able to get creative again! Thank you so much!
Not even 3 minutes in and you've figured out the problem I spent all weekend trying to fix. Such a brilliant way of showing what is wrong with your machine!
Thank you so much. I have not used my overlook for a while and just needed to check the needles as it was not in the right place now I can get back to my sewing wooooh. Thank you
Hi, I own a vintage(!?) Singer 14U444B, which I have had for decades from new…..I love it and it suits my needs but sadly things started going wrong a couple of months ago….I was on the verge of taking into a repairer but the cost of a service would have been more than the machine was worth….so I decided to have a go myself! Thanks to your fab videos on servicing and troubleshooting I now have my beloved overlocker back! Thank you ever so much…..your videos are informative, well presented and inspire confidence! Thank you again 🎉🎉
My right needle left loops underneath my fabric - I never even considered removing the presser foot and adjusting the threads until you said it! My serger is saved, thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏
Hello amazing Abi I love you videos, I have a newish Necchi OV234 which hasn’t been used much or abused in anyway. When I selected trim it used to cut but no longer does. The knives are sharp and oiled and all the settings are correct. I can move the curved knife up and down with my finger on setting 5 but when I sew the knife doesn’t move to cut…could the left cutting switch be somehow not connecting to the knife? I was wondering with your knowledge if you could help with any suggestions please🙏🏻 All my best Sophie
Hello Abi, following my last message, I have tried the cutting switch whilst moving the knife and somehow the switch has connected and it cuts again👏🏻😁I’m so relieved after a couple of hours trying to problem solve😅
Thanks so much for your tutorials, my issue is my lower looper thread keeps snapping on brother m340d, hope you can help, cant tell you how many times ive re threaded x
Many Thanks Abi I was re threading my over locker many times over and over again and lost hope in middle of my sewing Thanks god I found your video I put the needle up and worked again I don’t know how to thank you enough 😄🙏

Don't know why I didn't check your channel first but, after hours of mucking about with the machine, you've saved the day with a quick needle adjustment. Thank you so much!!!
Thank God I've found you! A pleasant voice, a clear teaching style and process! Here is my question: I cleaned my 1034D today after sewing gobs of fleece. I removed the throat plate, unscrewing the flat head AND the tiny Phillips head screw first. Upon removing the plate, a tiny "bar" fell into the works. I've tried over and over to replace all this, and each time, after running the machine, the thread all bunches up and will not release from the long tiny triangle piece and create any stitches. How can I fix it correctly?
The shape of that tiny piece is crucial to the stitches being able to slide off and not get caught.in the meantime , you could try a diamond dust miniature file or even a small sanding wheel on slow speed using a dremel tool. My dremel comes in quite handy while working on fixing sewing machines and sergers Need to smooth off the roughness of it until you can replace the needle plate. I have a 1034D myself and lots of extra parts not sure if I have one to fit your machine but if into I will let you know.
You're a life saver! Thanks so much for posting this. I spent H.O.U.R.S. trying to sort out my serger problem this weekend. Rethreaded the lower looper a dozen-plus times. The part where you removed the foot and showed where a thread could be caught.....problem solved. Thank you!

I so wish I had found you before this evening. I spent an hour re-threading my machine. My last thought was check my needles. That's exactly what was wrong. My right needle wasn't in completely. Spent an hour fiddling about with it. Now I'll remember always check needles if everything else is threaded correctly.
Thank you so much! My loops went wonky all of a sudden, turns out one or both wasn't seated in the tension disc properly. I tightened them like you suggested & I'm back on track!
Fantastic explanations for small things turn BIG until I was ready to rip my hair out, LOL. I am glad I found you, checked out your website, saw that you are coming from many years as a sewing teacher for kids and adults alike. Bravo Abi, please keep up your great work.
Just got my first serger and had been fighting with it for hours as it would not looping thread at all. I almost gave up and you just got me a simple fix. Thank you so much.
No wonder you are so smart Abi! You are an engineer! This video was so insightful. My issues always surface when upcycling and mending layers of clothing and knowing when the machine might not be able to handle it because I have no "test" fabric.
Thank you abi once again for some worthwhile tips had a needle problem last week and it never corrected until having to replace the needle so can only surmise that I had not inserted the needle or perhaps was loosely installed kind regards, Robert.

Hi, I really enjoy your videos. I have a question and maybe you can help me. I am trying to fix my brother 925D but the needle hits the bottom left looper. What may I be doing wrong? Thank you
Thank you! A common sense approach to figuring out what the heck I've done! Yesterday the serger was fine, today it's skipping stitches :( It's like the machine has a mind of it's own! Off to investigate...
This video is so useful to keep it close to my serger machine . I really appreciated what you showed and pointed out what the right way to do as well ! Thank You for sharing !
I have a Brother overlooker and I noticed that the left needle tension dial is quite loose compared to the other dials. I had been using 3 threads, but needed 4 threads, but the Left needle thread was rather loose. I changed the needle and checked it was inserted correctly, but still not sewing properly. The only way I could get a decent stitch was to turn the Left needle tension dial up to 6, but the right is set at 3.5. I didn't have this problem previously, so was concerned that I do now. I always keep a note of test samples, so that I can have a reference to various fabrics. Do you think it's something to do with the Left tension dial being looser than the others and can I fix it myself.. Can you advise please. Thank you
You made it look so straightforward to put right what you made wrong, so when mine arrives tomorrow I'll be less worried about 'breaking' it and be able to enjoy experimenting instead, thank you :)
Hi Abby, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on overlockers. Please will you assist me? I have a brother 2504D (South Africa) and it looks the same as the brother overlocker in the video. I was serging perfectly fine until i i tried to serge a lightweight strech fabric. The fabric seemed to bunch up and jam around the stich finger and or loppers. I re-threaded,changed needles, cleaned and oiled the machine, fiddled with tensions, even changed thread but it continued to happen. I tried using a different strech fabric to see if it will work but it keeps jamming under the needle plate.
Oh no! Often, something is catching the thread. On these machines, the tension discs can catch thread in it’s grooves, or the so when the machine is running, it gets snapped. Try to locate the point where this might be happening by following the thread along its feed. Is it always the same thread?
Thanks for the video. I have a Bernina 700D. It was working the last time used it, which was a while ago. Now it won't stitch at all. Correct threading, oiled and dusted. But the handwheel won't even turn(forward). Any idea what the issue would be? Thank you.
@@AbisDen Yes, I did put it in the container for a few weeks. I wonder if I can use WD-40 or only sewing machine oil. I hear there's something called trifollow and Pb blast but not sure if they're the right ones for sewing machines. I did use a few drops on the metal bits but still no movement.
Try wd40 to break down whatever is sticking and wipe that away after a few hours, then try sewing machine oil, or you could even buy some silicone grease and smear a teeny bit on before trying to move it again
Hi Abi I haven't used my sewing machine for a long time and when I tried to start sewing the machine won't even move not even the wheel. What can I do please? Do you think it needs oiling? Thanks you so much for your help. Carmen
Oh no! I think a little oil will definitely help but these machines use such poor quality metal inside, they rust easily and jam up quickly. Id stay clear away from Brother in the future
Hi Aby, I have a Serger Machine 1043D for around 10 years ago. I haven't use it for some time and she was working ok and today I plug her to use it and she won't turn on not even the light. It seems is the cord, it looks ok to me but I think it is not having contact. What do you think.
Something is trapping the thread, maybe it’s wound too tight? Getting caught on a spindle or in a guide? Sometimes a dirty/furry machine makes the thread easy to pull out.
Thank you for the great Help! I am not sure what tpyes of needles to use in my older serger, one broke. I have a Bernette for Bernina, Fun Lock serger. Are there certain needles to buy for it? I appreciate any help.
That will be because the machine is threaded through the loopers incorrectly, the order of looping in that case is wrong and the looper thread is getting caught too early at one point. I’m so sorry but try again x
Having only had my overlocker since Christmas Day and with much success until i broke a needle last weekend, was so relieved to find this video. I haven't installed the replacement properly! Thanks, Abi 😁
Hi Abi thank you for your video. When sewing knitted fabrics do I need to use a ballpoint needle or adjust the thread tension or pressure foot tension? I'm making mittens from upcycled sweaters so they have various thicknesses. Thanks for any suggestions.
I know this is an older video, but my machine is new out of the box and the way they had it threaded did not work. I watched a how to video on threading and it is doing the same thing. When I start to use it, it doesn’t work properly and makes a grinding noise. Do you have any tips for how to fix this. I am fairly confident that I followed everything exactly how it was shown and it’s just not working. I would really appreciate any advice.
so far just about all this happened to me when I went to "check on my baby" ! This video saves me!!!!! I am a true beginner serger . My machine is one week old.
OMG. Ur dat Peng ting from Wembley, innit? 💕 it’s great to have you here . I can’t wait to see what you create 💪🏽 let me know what you get and I’m sure we can create something wonderful for the family :)
You are genius. I've used mymachine for years never had an issue. Now put new needles for spandex. And wouldn't stitch perfectly infact pretty badly. My luck watching your video the first thing you addressed was the exact issue I had. Thank you so much.
I used to think every machine had heir own unique way of fixing/adjusting the timing. Mainly thought this because there are SO MANY different videos showing so many different steps! I stumbled on this video and your up close camera shot removed all those thoughts because the end result of every overlock serger is the same type of stitch. For some reason there are NO videos on my Serger model , Babylock 5260, does not have differential feed I don't believe, regarding how to adjust the feed dogs. Being an older model machine it only has a dial with numbers inside the left side and an indent in the wheel used to adjust the feed dog height. At first the feed dogs would not move at all until I started fiddling with it. I am using light to medium weight fabrics so the 1-2 setting should be fine. How do I set these feed dogs so I can get going on my projects? Any assistance would be a huge help and a blessing!
Some older machines don’t have the ability to change differential feed. I don’t know your model but it could be one that falls into this category. The numbers inside could be the knife adjustment.🤔
@@AbisDen the knob inside is definitelynthe feed dog adjustment. As I turn the large screw in the center itnis the feed dogs that raise and lower. There are numbers on it amd when loose the part they are on turn. A metal button type piece is pressed and rests in a groove in that part. So I held it down while turning the large screw until the 0-2 area was directly at the bottom. After doing that the feed dogs were up when the needle.was at high point and down when needle down. I FIGURED OUT THE PROBLEM ! I was the PRESSER FOOT not the top tension! The "height" of the presser foot was TOO HIGH this causing TOO MUCH PRESSURE on the feed dogs NOT allowing them to move! I just HAD to SHARE this information with you since YOUR video GREATLY helped me! I am putting a video on my channel to show exactly how I got to this resolution too! Just one of those ODD things with Vintsge Sergers I guess, thanks again!
Avi, I have a 1034D which has barely been used. The green (upperlooper) tension disc seems to not engage at all. The thread stays loose, and the tension release button seems jiggley. I have checked as well as I can to be sure no thread(s) are caught in there. Any ideas at all? I live very far from any repair people.
I have this machine - the US version - and I have it torn apart to re-time for the second time, same problem. What I'd like to know is this: what company in makes the Jaguar machine that opens completely in the front - but is available in the US? Googling this gets me nowhere, only a long list of air-threaded machines and a lot of these Brothers (which I already have). My current problem is that my upper looper is losing the thread every time. I can feel where the needle is hitting the lower looper so I'm fixing that. But this is the second time; I'd really like a new, more dependable serger that I won't have to fix. Do you know what company makes a full-front access machine that's available in the US?
I appreciate this video! Any clue what I could do to stop the threads from getting STUCK in the tension disks? It’s been driving me crazy and I can’t seem to fix it :( it gets stuck and then eventually breaks the thread
Fab videos - easily explained - however, I have a problem with my Jaguar 2015 - the left thread doesn't seem to catch only giving a 3 thread stitch instead of 4. I've tried every tension adjustment, my needle is in fully but this is common place for me! Driving me nuts! What can I do to adjust this?
My janome has suddenly started snaping threads particularly on the furthest right looper. I've cleaned it, oiled it and re threaded. I've even changed threads, adjusted the tension and it still keeps snapping. Any suggestions?
Hi Abi I'm asking for my wife who has a janome 4 thread overlocker and she has a particular issue with threads not catching properly. I've got some pictures but not sure if I can post them on here. Would appreciate your help as she is getting frustrated.
Hi hun my overlocker I’ve got second hand I’m new at this where do I get needles from please as the needle that is in the Machine I think is wrong and the threat keeps gathering up just underneath foot xx
Hi Amanda. The needles won’t be at fault. The needle plate is probably damaged. This machine has a lot of problems around that area. Look for my video on fixing the needle plate. Good luck! 🌷🪡
I am doing a rolled hymn on a skirt and cutting off 4 inches. What is the best way to measure 4 inches while you surge? I have tried tape on my machine and marking the fabric but it just feels clunky.
Hi Abi, my needle keeps breaking even though I have adjusted it, do you have any ideas what could be causing this? Anything you could advise would be very much appreciated. Regards, Sue.
Hello Abi, I think my issue is that I'm not using the proper needle, I thread it and the thread keeps breaking. Could you please tell me if there is a certain type of needle for the Brother 1034 Serger, if not could you let me know what type you use. Thanks in advance !!!
Hi. any regular sewing machine needle will work in all standard domestic overlockers. If your thread is breaking, it’s catching something along the thread path. Or the threading in general is not quite right. I’d start again.
I should have found you before I (think) broke my Brother Serger machine. I tried to sew a thick fabric and almost broke my machine. Now, when I press the foot control, it makes the noise as if the machine is running but nothing happens. do you have any idea what has happened? Thank you so much for your video.
I’ve just bought a singer s14-78 (eBay!) I then bought additional presser feet (Amazon). I’ve tried to use the ruffle foot. But it catches on needles, which then snapped. Do you know where I’m going wrong? Thanks
Abi I'm so frustrated. My serger went wonky a couple weeks ago and I've spent so much time learning, downloading service manuals, adjusting the timing, lining everything up to within .5mm of where it should be and my serger now creates a chain, but the moment I insert fabric under the foot it stops chaining, then if I take the fabric out it will chain again. I thought it had to be an issue with needle bar height, feed dog height, or presser foot tension but I've checked all of those and they all are where they should be. I'm in tears and quickly running out of ideas. I just want to sew again, I have so many fun ideas for summer and it's all been put on hold - I have limited time to sew during the day and all of my sewing time has been dedicated to fixing this damn machine. If you have any ideas at all, I'd be so appreciative. Thanks for listening anyway
Hi again Abi. I have such problems when I try and create a 3-thread overlock on the Aldi Necchi OV234. I want to use it to tidy the edges of a sleeve I have set in. I gave up and used a sewing machine zigzag on something else but it wasn't really good on viscose. I have tried again today for the past three hours and just can't get the stiches to look right, again on viscose. I have googled many times and just can't get it set correctly. First of all, for a three thread, should the two loopers overlap on the top of the seam , or is that only for a 4 thread? I just don't know how it is supposed to look. I've reduced the differential feed to 0.7 and that has helped with the tunelling and I've fiddled with the looper settings. Any tips or videos would be so great. thank you
Viscose can be so tricky to sew. It’s lightweight and with 3 or 4 threads, the stitches can get too thick and heavy on the fabric. Use 3 threads, light weight thread and fine needles. Finally, increase the stitch length.
@@AbisDen the funny thing is, it worked fine on four thread on the same fabric, but not with three. I could try a change of needle, which is what I had to do on the sewing machine with that fabric. I used a 70/10 on the sewing machine. I'll try increasing the stitch length. Thank you.
Hello Abi! My machine isn't making a chain at all. I was sewing something and I guess a section was too thick. It made a pop sound and now nothing! I’ve checked the thread, no needles are broken and the thread goes through smoothly. Am I missing something?? I've only used my machine once.😩😩
Just check the knife hasn’t slipped. If it has, it usually chews the fabric rather than cuts. If the blade is full, it’s usually cuts badly. You can change the knife easily.
10 years of periodically trying to get my machine to stitch has come to an end! I just found you today Abi and am delighted I did! I re-threaded,changed needles, cleaned and oiled the machine, fiddled with tensions, even changed thread but it continued to happen. I tried using a different strech fabric to see if it will work but it keeps jamming under the needle plate.
The stitch finger gets loose on these machines and if dislodged can cause the chain to build up in the needle plate area.
Hi, I love this video but I do have a problem in my serger. The lower looper thread keep breaking and I don't know what's causing it. Please help
Thank you.
Oh no!you’ll need to open it. It sounds like it’s jammed did you store it somewhere cold or humid?
@@AbisDen Yes, I did put it in the container for a few weeks. I wonder if I can use WD-40 or only sewing machine oil. I hear there's something called trifollow and Pb blast but not sure if they're the right ones for sewing machines. I did use a few drops on the metal bits but still no movement.
Try wd40 to break down whatever is sticking and wipe that away after a few hours, then try sewing machine oil, or you could even buy some silicone grease and smear a teeny bit on before trying to move it again
Hi Abi
I haven't used my sewing machine for a long time and when I tried to start sewing the machine won't even move not even the wheel.
You could try the fuse in the plug?
Hi Abu even though I did what said it still remain the same. Is there any other causes the stiches are not overclocking
My machine is a 14SH744 overclock machine
Have a look at the timing video and good luck
@@AbisDen is it the same vedio or a different one. May you provide a link to your timing vedio please
Hi Abi. Everytime I try to use my machine the lower loop thread cut off. What might be the problem?
Something is trapping the thread, maybe it’s wound too tight? Getting caught on a spindle or in a guide? Sometimes a dirty/furry machine makes the thread easy to pull out.
@@AbisDen thanks Abi. I will clean the machine and oil it, then I will see what happens next.
Thank you for the great Help! I am not sure what tpyes of needles to use in my older serger, one broke. I have a Bernette for Bernina, Fun Lock serger. Are there certain needles to buy for it? I appreciate any help.
Thanks Abi. One question if I may? Why does my serger end up with six threads rather than four after I have serged?
Take a look here. ruclips.net/video/67kO1Cilhrg/видео.html
Thank you so much for the overlock machine information
so far just about all this happened to me when I went to "check on my baby" ! This video saves me!!!!! I am a true beginner serger . My machine is one week old.
Yay!
Thank you for showing us the causes of the some of the problems that can occur with the overlocker
Thanks Abi, I always know where to come when I have a problem, your a star...
love your channel Abi, just found it today and have binged my way through lots. Can't wait to get my overlocker now lol!
OMG. Ur dat Peng ting from Wembley, innit? 💕 it’s great to have you here . I can’t wait to see what you create 💪🏽 let me know what you get and I’m sure we can create something wonderful for the family :)
What can i do about my two loopers seem to be jammimg the works.?
Apologies for late response, it sounds like the timing is off.
You are genius. I've used mymachine for years never had an issue. Now put new needles for spandex. And wouldn't stitch perfectly infact pretty badly.
My luck watching your video the first thing you addressed was the exact issue I had. Thank you so much.
That’s brilliant KC. I’m so pleased you’ve resolved the problem! 🪡🧵💫
Thank you so much for this! Just had to straighten my threads. Usually something simple but I was so frustrated. Thanks again.
this helped me today, THANK YOU!!!!!
Glad it helped!
Just bought this today. The presser foot lift handle on the right is a little loose, is it supposed to be?
Yay! brilliant - well done . I didn't find the video, but I learned a few other things - Lea and Perrins Worcester sauce is the best ;)
@@AbisDen Thank you! ❤️Also - I gave up and cried uncle - took it to my repair guy in pieces 😂
Thank you so much, this helped a lot.
Amazing! Thanks for letting me know. Feedback is really helpful ! 💕✨🙌🏽
Thank you so much this really helped
brilliant x
Thanks🙏. Appriciate your hard work.
Hi , I just want to know where did you buy the fabric cutting table?
Just watching all your videos while waiting for my overlocker to be delivered.
I appreciate this video! Any clue what I could do to stop the threads from getting STUCK in the tension disks? It’s been driving me crazy and I can’t seem to fix it :( it gets stuck and then eventually breaks the thread
I am
Fab videos - easily explained - however, I have a problem with my Jaguar 2015 - the left thread doesn't seem to catch only giving a 3 thread stitch instead of 4. I've tried every tension adjustment, my needle is in fully but this is common place for me! Driving me nuts! What can I do to adjust this?
Have a look at my new video out today. I think the solution will be there.

Worthwhile tips Abi. It's good to know. Thank you abi. 👍🌹
@@AbisDen Thank you Abi, I'll try your tips :-)
I need to see the reply as I am having the same problem. The first needle on the left keeps breaking.
Have just bought my first serger and this video was so helpful, now a subscriber 👍
Lovely to have you with us. I’ll be making more like this video. I hadn’t realised people found these machines tricky to use
Hi can you please tell me why my lower looper thread keeps snapping ?
Always informative Abi thank you 😊
Great video thanks. A question, I thought you should always have the foot up before changing tensions?
Not really
I should have found you before I (think) broke my Brother Serger machine. I tried to sew a thick fabric and almost broke my machine. Now, when I press the foot control, it makes the noise as if the machine is running but nothing happens. do you have any idea what has happened? Thank you so much for your video.
Yes, have a look at this and the throw the machine out and never buy brother again! ruclips.net/video/FFROu8fX12s/видео.html
I’ve just bought a singer s14-78 (eBay!) I then bought additional presser feet (Amazon). I’ve tried to use the ruffle foot. But it catches on needles, which then snapped. Do you know where I’m going wrong? Thanks
Did you check from the seller that the feet were for this model? It sounds like they're maybe not, have a word with them to confirm, good luck x
My machine(singer S0100) works perfect but I have been noticing a burning smell after sewing… any suggestions??
Oh my goodness. You saved me from throwing my overlocker at the wall 😂. Thank youuuuuu
Hey Crista, how did you get on, I didn't see the comment. I'm so sorry you've had a tough time with this machine
my overlock was making my life crazy, thank you so much, you have a new subscriber
Thank you for joining us!
My overlocker is not cutting the fabric. All it does is bunched up the fabric when I sew. What should I do to fix it Albi
can you program it to just sew not cut also???
Yes, just turn the knife out of the way
Hi again Abi.
Thank you.
It sounds like a timing issue in that case. 🙁
@@AbisDen not sure what a timing issue is.
Can't thread my Lower looper brother 1034D
Hello Abi! My machine isn't making a chain at all. I was sewing something and I guess a section was too thick. It made a pop sound and now nothing! I’ve checked the thread, no needles are broken and the thread goes through smoothly. Am I missing something?? I've only used my machine once.😩😩
Hi abi, what if my cutter will no longer cut the cloth? What should i do?
Just check the knife hasn’t slipped. If it has, it usually chews the fabric rather than cuts. If the blade is full, it’s usually cuts badly. You can change the knife easily.
