Two years on and we still see lots of people suggesting tension problem - let's share this video! & How about the dreadful music ! Haha! just watched the video through, now I can see why I have so many comments about it.
Being a total novice with an overlocker, I found your information and guidance about tensioning answered why my stitches were looping on the edge. Thanks Abi. 👍
sadly, lots of people are misled to thinking only tensions are adjusted on the overlocker - unfortunately they couldnt be more wrong. overlocker tension hardly changes, just as you leave the tension on a sewing machine, you leave the tension on the overlocker.Glad to help. I have a Top Tips video coming soon, subscribe and hit that bell to get the notification :
Thank you so much!! No where does the manual mention this and I was ready to drop the machine off a cliff. Everyone talks tension but no one ever mentioned the knife!!
Thank you. It is surprising the troubleshooting sections of serger manuals (at least the one I own) don't mention changing the knife position or even identify this "loopy" threading as an issue. Your tutorial was very helpful particularly the explanation why one layer of fabric causes so much grief. Often on the same garment some areas are serged over double fabric thickness and a few others might be single...good to know.
Thank you thank you thank you. You are the ONLY person out of all the videos I've watched this week that addressed this exact issue which is the very one I had. Now I can finally finish my baby blankets before the baby arrives in the next few weeks.
I knew very little when I got my serger and got so discouraged for a while when I got this issue- but this fixed it for me and I feel a lot more confident moving forward now! Thank you for your video
Thank you!! Adjusting the knife fixed the problem. I am with all of the others who are surprised this is not in any manuals. Most searches just had info on looper tension. My old serger did not do this, so I was baffled when my new serger did. The only way to get a good edge was to put it in rolled hem mode.

Dear Abi. After one hour trying to fix the loops my serger was giving me trouble with i found your video and now its beautiful. A big fat thank youuuuu!!!!!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I’ve spent ages today adjusting all the tensions trying to fix this, looking at so many ‘cheat sheet’ images to try and find something similar to my issue, and getting no where, and then I stumble upon your video- adjust the knife as you suggest, and BAM perfection!! Thank you thank you thank you!!
Thank you for the information. I had the same problem, and rethread the lower looper and all is fixed, even if the lower looper is a pain to thread. You are a gem.
Adjusting the knife for lycra/spandex fabric worked perfect for me, and your comment about the double layers of fabric was so helpful Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for this video. For over a week I’d been faffing about with the tension getting increasingly baffled and frustrated. I’m just repeating comments below, but it’s amazing the manual and other guides don’t suggest changing the knife position. I’ve finally finished my sweater dress now 😊
Thank you so much. That was very very helpful. I'm learning to use my serger and had the thread tension perfect. I used thinner fabric and i noticed the loops, but the actual stitching looked perfect. Increasing the stitch width was the answer! You saved me alot of time 😁
Thank you so much for your very clear demonstration. I have had this problem with over locking a seam on taffeta and your suggestions have allowed me to fix it up. My machine is brand new so I am still learning its little quirks.
Abi, thanks SO much for the tips to solve loops hanging over the edge of my fabric. I've just finished my first project - a zipped lined bag in which to store my accessories. As we're in lockdown, I have no excuse but to sort through my fabric stash and keep busy!!
Fantastic information, thank you. I know how to disengage and engage the knife but about adjusting its distance from the edge. I shall have to check that out, I have used my overlocker for more than 40 years.
@Abi's Sewing Den - I've always been one for hand stitching my clothes, however I recently purchased a used Toyota SL3000 triple thread overlocker/weaver on a whim. Having never used a sewing machine before, let alone an overlocker/weaver. It's a robust little machine and only cost me £50 in a charity shop, with lots of accessories. Now armed with some very useful information about stitch positioning and a clear explanation of thread tensioning, I've managed to achieve quite satisfactory results in one afternoon's practice on different samples, while following your insightful guidance. Fore which I'm most grateful, because I'm disabled, live alone and have a big pile of tatty favourites. And I can now finally make some net curtains that actually fit the bloody windows. I would otherwise be paying someone else. Not any more! 😉 #sewwithabi indeed.
Thank you for sharing. This is so lovely to read and absolutely what this channel is about. Empowering each of us. You want to sew, great? Great let’s get on with it. You don’t need to pay out £££’s for classes and repair men who don’t actually know what they’re doing anyways. Bravo!!!
thank you! just finished a t-shirt with light weight material; very frustrating to see those loose loops. Didn't even know you could move the blade that way....newbie.....thank you so much.
Thank you so much- my serger has been driving me crazy and none of the repair shops are open in my area. I couldn't figure out why adjusting the tension knobs wasn't doing anything- the knife settings are a hidden secret!
I have just learned so much with your video. I bought the new singer lidl S010 and I was fighting without result, I will try the knife tomorrow and it will probably solve the problem. *happy dance* thank you
I learn something every time I watch your videos. This is particularly helpful to me, I have the Janome Pro 4 D looks very similar to yours. I don’t know if it’s a different model number for Canada than yours. My old 20+ years old didn’t have the adjustable blade on foot pressure so things I’m learning. You’re never too old to learn something new. 😁😁. Can’t wait to get in my sewing room now. Thank you so much for sharing Abi. Have a great weekend. Val 🇨🇦🇬🇧❤️
