The best advice i can give as a seamstress is before you thread your machine, just run it and watch what it does. Do this with all your machines. I learned so much about industrial machines, in the beginning by just watching the bobbin and needle interact. When i got my serger I did the same thing, just watched it run for a bit, then when i threaded it, I would turn the hand wheel to see what that thread was doing and where it was going. You might need to take some pieces off to see it all, but thats also good to do, being able to fix your machine when shes acting up is priceless. I've taken apart so many sewing machines at this point I'm pretty comfortable fixing just about any issues that crop up now. When you're ready get some scrap fabric and test all the settings on the machine, its the best way to know how things are going to work with different types of fabric.

I have the serger working well on the stitch and threading but my problem is that the feed dogs are not pulling /working. I have to force the material through. Can you assist??
Oh no! I would think this might have something to do with the presser foot? I believe there is also a presser foot/feed dog adjustment to make it more aggressive
I have two identical sergers and they worked wonderfully until I ran out of thread on the needle I put a new spool of thread in and now the darn thing creates a really loose loopy stitch I tried adjusting the needle thread tension and the upper looper tension and while the stitching is a bit tighter now the darn thing unthreads the needle or it does this crazy thing where the needle thread gets all looped up. I know it is threaded correctly and I just can’t figure it out
I would make sure it's being installed all the way up to the top of the needle holder, then check that it's not hitting a knife or looper (could be a time issue) and then make sure the thread isn't caught somewhere causing severe tension on the needle. Good luck!
Hi, as well as ensuring that the needle is installed correctly, make sure you thread it in the order indicated by the manufacturer. Also take a look at RUclips video s about your machine. You could try a slightly larger needle and good quality thread. Thread tension can also cause threads or needles to break. Hope this helps.
Hi! My right needle thread and sometimes my left needle breaks AFTER serging. The stitch is nice. Needles ok, I even turned the tension to 0!!! But nothing. When stretching the fabric after serging, needle thread breaks... can you help please?
It sounds like a tension issue and could be the way all the threads are interacting, not just the needle threads. I would consult your manual for recommended settings and diagrams
My serger was fine I just took it in for a cleaning and he told me I needed new blades and that’s where the problem started. I never had it chew up any fabric and now it just wants to chew up fabric I cannot adjust my stitch width unless I do some tinkering. I’m not really confident he has the blade in the correct position either. It’s not too bad when I know what I have adjusted or touched on my machine but when someone else monkeys on it I have no idea where to start. So frustrating!! He also said my timing was off which I didn’t see any evidence of. Now I really think the timing is off!
Oh boy, that is frustrating! The knives are fairly easily adjusted (on my machine, anyway). They have a little notch in them to see where they align on the machine. If that doesn't help, I would take it to a different repair person, if possible.
Thank you for taking the time to reply☺️. Yes next time I’ll replace my own blades. Since I posted that comment I discovered that the blade assembly isn’t returning back to a lesser width when I dial it closer. It seems something is sticking … for wider stitch widths it moves to the right but when I turn the knob to come back to a narrower stitch width I have to push it back. I bought this second hand and not from a Jenome dealer. I definitely will be trying to find someone else.
@@seasonallyproductive That's strange. I have seven different domestic sergers and each one has an arrow indicating which way to turn the handwheel. Some have the arrow on the handwheel and some on the body of the machine above the handwheel.
My blade is not cutting/ I have a singer serger too. I bought it on marketplace it has differential feed. It looks alot like yours but I am not sure the blades are the same.
I have had this issue and it was the lower blade being pushed down beyond its guide line. If you look closely there is a small notch line showing you where to line it up. It's an easy fix with a screw driver
Sometimes it could be an issue with the feed dogs. Which is why it would explain the issues happening sporadically. Just thought I’d mention this and hopefully it helps 😁
My 1034d's knife release flip won't move to the left (intended to release the knife). I opened the cover to see inside and flip can't move because something's blocking. Do you know what's wrong?
What about if your thread keeps coming out the left needle 😂 I’ll thread it and pull the read to the back so I know it’s threaded but some how I’ll check the chain and the left needle thread is no longer there
My Pfaff 4862 is new to me, and after recently having paid for general servicing to fix the timing, I have sewn for about 10 hours on it. Now my presser foot lift lever on the side is loose and won’t engage and lift the presser foot. Would hate to have to pay for another service. Any suggestions?
I would ask for a warranty check since you just took it in for servicing. It sounds like something is disconnected inside so if the shop won't look at it for free then you could take the side off and see if there's something obviously out of place
I don't know that there is a standard. It will depend on the machine itself, as well as the fabric being used. I would check that the tension discs are completely clean (I use floss) and that the threads are sitting properly between the discs. Then I would test several times, making adjustments to one dial at a time until I get the desired outcome.
Don’t know. I have a question. When sewing thread wraps around roll hem point and other part beside roll hem throat part. Fabric will then not move forward. Why?
Hi. My Singer Coverlock 14n735 suddenly making problems. It does not start at all :(( when i press the footer, its not starting. But the lamp are okay. I just bought this machine 1 month ago 😭 now its suddenly not working. Should i change the footer ?
I would first check the cord. Unplug all ends and us them back in, making sure it's all tight. If that doesnt solve the problem, then it is likely the wiring in either the pedal or the receiving port. A technician would be able to tell you which - or if you have another pedal that fits into the port you could try that
Hmm. That is frustrating. If you're threading completely through in the correct order (3,4,1,2), then I would check that your lower looper thread is coming up over the upper looper
need help with serger wrapping thread around feed area. i can't get thread to not wrap around the under area, knife presser foot area. I have a brother 1634d. i am so frustrated. i can't find anything on this. help please.
I just bought a serger today. It was second hand to me but the lady said it was new . It looks fairly new. It is a White Speedylock 1600. My issue is we finally got it threaded. I tested it made some adjustments to the tension dials. I started getting really nice seams then I shut it off. I decided I wanted to check out how it did on a single layer of fabric. I did fine then I did another test of 2 layers and my threads started getting all messed up. I couldn't stitch without it getting all tangled...I noticed that a thread keeps getting caught under the metal plate. Right where the plate meets the plastic. Just wondering if anyone else has had an issue with that happening?
It may not be threaded correctly, or the thread for that needle may be getting caught on something. First step is always to try rethreasing from the beginning
Rethreading is a great first try! This has happened to me before, as well. Making sure I'm threading in the right order, and that none of the threads are getting stuck anywhere usually solves the problem. If you're able to run your machine with the cover open, I would do that, very slowly, so you can see what's going on
Yes, it came with my pfaff coverlock 3.0. I've since removed it because it kept getting bumped off, or would be in the way for my kids when they use the serger
I would guess the thread is not in the tension discs correctly, or there is a piece of fibre/dust/etc caught in the discs as well. Remove the thread and then use some dental floss to clean between the discs
I noticed your Singer Serger doesn’t seem to have a seam guide. I have the Stylist Singer model and it doesn’t have one either. It really really irks me, as it seems like a very basic tool. Do you know why our models don’t have one? Have you just drawn markers on the looper cover to use as guides? I find it insufficient bc it’s too far away to be accurate.
I don't know the answer to that. I've used washi tape in the past to do so. Now I know my machine and have memorized the measurements I use often based on the parts of the machine
It's also possible that your timing is off. Search here on YT for videos that explain serger timing. I've had the same issue before and after fixing the timing, it chain stitches again
I have broken 6 needles until I just used the round knob to slowly turn and find that the loopers are hitting my needles... I don't understand how it is so close and hitting the right or left hitting. I thought perhaps the needle was not pushed up all the way, but it was. What do I do?? Babylock Eclipse Dx
@@seasonallyproductive new needles... also this is a self threader. I am trying to figure out how it’s hitting. It’s not like it’s movable ( to bend it back in place) ughhh I live on Maui. If I put it in the shop, it may be there 4-6 months!!
Does it sound like metal hitting metal? Needle could be bet, knife could be out of place, or timing could be off. I would first try new needles and check postion of knives. Re-thread in order and see how that works
I have a brother 1634D and my left needle thread is constantly breaking. I took it apart and cleaned it and have rethreaded it, tried different needles and nothing helped. It’ll sew for a while and then the left needle just breaks and will keep going. Any suggestions?
What order are you threading? Most machines are upper looper, lower looper, right needle, left needle. Seems silly, but it could be the cause. I would also check that the thread isn't wrapped around the spool holder, or anywhere else.
I'm am so stressed because of my singer serger lol. I just bought it and it is threaded correctly because it makes the chain tail, but whenever I try to feed my fabric through, the thread tail doesn't move through?? Unless I have to constantly pull the tail while my fabric is going through? It keeps jamming and I see a ton of thread gathered at the start of my fabric and then the serger stops. Like I'm only sewing not even an inch of fabric before it stops. My fabric isn't bunching because my fabric has barely even made it through lol
Just to clarify - you're able to run it fine without fabric? With the presser foot up and down it works fine? Bit once you put the fabric in with the presser foot down it won't move? Are the feed dogs in the upper position?
I am having the same issue. Letting out the line and it’s properly threaded. It bunches up even if no fabric. Please let me know if you found the solution.
@@seasonallyproductive yes, I got it to work fine after fiddling with the tension, but I still run into the same issue sometimes. I’m not sure what position the feed dogs are in to be honest lol.
@@aprilames6043 I had to keep adjusting my tension and I was able to serge one garment. I haven’t tried it again with another fabric since that project though.
@@TaeJamz thank you so much! I found that I did not correctly thread the lower looper (apparently there are two holes to thread). I’m still working to get the correct tension but did finally get it working 🤷🏻♀️
I have borrowed an overlocker (Singer) just to see how I get on with it and to begin with all went well. However, suddenly the fabric seems to get trapped or pulled in towards the blades and the blades aren’t cutting as well as they did originally. I did get a pin trapped in there and I’m worried that this is going to prove an expensive issue. Can I change the blades myself? Or sharpen them perhaps? If so, can you advise please?
Yes to both! Although I would first try readjusting the bottom blade. The blade may have a notch on it for alignment. If that doesn't work then try sharpening.
hey i hope you can answer my question! so my mom just bought a new serger which she received it today the problem is that the needle doesnt go up and down. when she pushes on the peddle it makes noise but doesnt sew do you know what the problem
Have you tried the hand wheel? Could be something with the power cord. If it still doesn't move with the hand wheel, I would check all areas to make sure there's not packaging jammed somewhere, or a bent piece restricting movement
Hi just wondering what's up with my machine when I thread it up and do a chain it does a good chain but as soon as I add fabric it's like it doesn't stich fabric at all then threads break? Can't understand why it's fine without the fabric, any help appreciated. Thanks
My 1st thought would be to rethread from scratch, making sure you're following the correct order. Typically sergers are 3, 4, 1, 2 for thread order. Ensure nothing is being caught anywhere.
I just got my machine second hand and one thing is one of the needles keeps getting caught it seems on the lower looper but also I can't even sew with it because when I try all it does is just cut and doesn't sew... I ordered some new needles because maybe I thought it was a bent needle? I haven't threaded properly it appears but for some reason it's not sewing at all... Please help me? It is a Brother 920D
It sounds like the order of the threading could be wrong and possibly the timing. If you're following the directions in the manual and still have trouble I would take it to the repair shop
my upper looper and the straight lower looper hit each other while i was sewing and now the serger won’t move since the pieces can’t move past each other. i’m not sure if a piece is bent or if my machines timing is off. do you know what this could be and how i could fix this?
Is a looper stuck in the fabric? This can happen when the knives aren't cutting properly. You'll need to cut the fabric out and then adjust the knives. Possibly sharpen them
I would look all around and inside to see what is causing it to seize. Could be loopers or knives binding on something, thread being pulled too tight somewhere, etc. If you can't see any issues then I would take it in to the repair shop
My top needled keep breaking they won’t hold . Omg I thought the first one was broke .....I bought another one and I’m Having the same issue the top left and right will not hold omg help they keep Breaking I’m loosing my mind helppppp

Adjust thread tensions until thread chains correctly when sewing without fabric, then try with fabric and slowly adjust tensions until it works. Hope this helps
This has happened to me before. Usually it's because the front knife has been pushed down or isn't in the correct position. It's an easy adjustment. There may be a small marking on the knife to show where to align it.

When turning the handwheel always follow the arrow on the machine. Some are turned towards you but many are turned away from you.
Great comment. I've never seen a machine with an arrow indicating which way to turn the handwheel. Maybe just on the ones that go "reverse"
@@seasonallyproductive That's strange. I have seven different domestic sergers and each one has an arrow indicating which way to turn the handwheel. Some have the arrow on the handwheel and some on the body of the machine above the handwheel.
Terrific tutorial!! Thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome!
Great point! Thanks for watching
I neeed help with differential dog settings 🥴😭
My 1034d's knife release flip won't move to the left (intended to release the knife). I opened the cover to see inside and flip can't move because something's blocking. Do you know what's wrong?
What about if your thread keeps coming out the left needle 😂 I’ll thread it and pull the read to the back so I know it’s threaded but some how I’ll check the chain and the left needle thread is no longer there
Could it be getting caught somewhere and breaking?
My Pfaff 4862 is new to me, and after recently having paid for general servicing to fix the timing, I have sewn for about 10 hours on it. Now my presser foot lift lever on the side is loose and won’t engage and lift the presser foot. Would hate to have to pay for another service. Any suggestions?
I would ask for a warranty check since you just took it in for servicing. It sounds like something is disconnected inside so if the shop won't look at it for free then you could take the side off and see if there's something obviously out of place
What is the standard numbers for a 3 thread serger. I keep getting large loops
I don't know that there is a standard. It will depend on the machine itself, as well as the fabric being used. I would check that the tension discs are completely clean (I use floss) and that the threads are sitting properly between the discs. Then I would test several times, making adjustments to one dial at a time until I get the desired outcome.
Couldnt get serger thread to chain. Went back to regular thread
Good afternoon! The knifes of my ultralock singer S14-78 machine don't work (they don't move). Can you explain me what the problem is?
Hi, sorry I'm not sure. I would check that they are engaged and that nothing is binding
Don’t know. I have a question. When sewing thread wraps around roll hem point and other part beside roll hem throat part. Fabric will then not move forward. Why?
I'm not understanding completely, but I think the fabric might be too far to the right? It shouldn't be getting caught in the loopers
I have 16sh546 singer serger what needles do I have to use?
So genuine, love your videos!
Thank you Sara! Sometimes a bit too honest ;)
A technician would be able to tell you which - or if you have another pedal that fits into the port you could try that
I have an older serger (90’s) and I tried twice to thread it according to the manual. Still no chains… just strands. Frustration setting in
Hmm. That is frustrating. If you're threading completely through in the correct order (3,4,1,2), then I would check that your lower looper thread is coming up over the upper looper
Hello! I am having trouble using the elastic foot. The machine is jamming up and the needles break! Please help!!!
Oh no! Unfortunately I haven't used any other feet on this one so I can't be of help :(
need help with serger wrapping thread around feed area. i can't get thread to not wrap around the under area, knife presser foot area. I have a brother 1634d. i am so frustrated. i can't find anything on this. help please.
Is this while there's fabric in the machine and the presser foot is down? Or when the presser foot is up?
Hi, can you help me to fixe mu upper knife, is not going back to his place is stock. I don't know really how that happen. Tank you
Mine sometimes has to be wiggled back into its proper position
The stich finger keeps falling off my Brother serger and It does not seem to hold on to it securely.
Could the screw be stripped out?
I'm wondering if it's a looper thread not being threaded up properly
Can u help me my b needle thread won't catch when I do a 4 thread stitch on my singer 14sh654 ultralock
I would try rethreading again following the manual exactly
Please what does it means when my A; needle thread keeps cutting after sarging well a little bit!
It may not be threaded correctly, or the thread for that needle may be getting caught on something. First step is always to try rethreasing from the beginning
@@seasonallyproductive thanks for the reply
Mine chains for a few seconds and then breaks. I have retreaded and keeps doing it. I don’t know what else to try.
Rethreading is a great first try! This has happened to me before, as well. Making sure I'm threading in the right order, and that none of the threads are getting stuck anywhere usually solves the problem. If you're able to run your machine with the cover open, I would do that, very slowly, so you can see what's going on
Oooh I see.thr waste bag isn't connected to your serger and sits underneath...where did you get this! Or what brand is it? I need one.
Yes, it came with my pfaff coverlock 3.0. I've since removed it because it kept getting bumped off, or would be in the way for my kids when they use the serger
So what does it means when needle tension will not change it stays loose whether its 1 or 9 its pissing me off
I would guess the thread is not in the tension discs correctly, or there is a piece of fibre/dust/etc caught in the discs as well. Remove the thread and then use some dental floss to clean between the discs
My "needles" on the inside of the machine keep hitting & scrapping each other so I can't even use the seger..
Went to a repair shop & it's the timing is off.. 😑
I I put in knew needle and rethreaded the whole serger but still get skipped stitches with right needle thread.
Skipped stitches can be due to the type of needle. My own serger is very particular between stretch and jersey and ball point needles.
Thanks!
No problem!
No! The problem with gathering fabric past the needles is usually thread tension.
Thanks for your input - good to check many things when troubleshooting
My machine is not forming a chain at all ..Tried rethreading several times, It didn't work out well.what can do ...
Usually it's the order of threading. Most machines thread in the order: upper looper, lower looper, right needle, left needle
It's also possible that your timing is off. Search here on YT for videos that explain serger timing. I've had the same issue before and after fixing the timing, it chain stitches again
My loopers just seem to come unthreaded…..I have an old simplicity sl4300
I would try rethreading following the manual. They shouldn't come untreated on their own
I have broken 6 needles until I just used the round knob to slowly turn and find that the loopers are hitting my needles... I don't understand how it is so close and hitting the right or left hitting. I thought perhaps the needle was not pushed up all the way, but it was. What do I do?? Babylock Eclipse Dx
I'm assuming these are all new, straight needles. The looper could be bent or timing could be off
@@seasonallyproductive new needles... also this is a self threader. I am trying to figure out how it’s hitting. It’s not like it’s movable ( to bend it back in place) ughhh I live on Maui. If I put it in the shop, it may be there 4-6 months!!
My singer serger keeps in threading everytime I sew it’s beyond frustrating. The brother was such a better machine compared to this one.
Is the thread snapping? Or the needles are unthreading?
My server makes a clicking sound and won’t even work….the needles just go through makes a clicking sound and won’t overlock the fabric
Thank you. Have you ever sharpened them yourself? Do you have advice on this?
@@smould1 no I haven't but I did have my repair lady do it once. I would just take a file or sharpening stone to the edge.
Hi. How to troubleshoot a serger which does not cut? Top knife is new but not sure about bottom one. Thanks!
I would check the position of the lower knife. It might be pushed down. If that doesn't work try sharpening
hey i hope you can answer my question! so my mom just bought a new serger which she received it today the problem is that the needle doesnt go up and down. when she pushes on the peddle it makes noise but doesnt sew do you know what the problem
Have you tried the hand wheel? Could be something with the power cord. If it still doesn't move with the hand wheel, I would check all areas to make sure there's not packaging jammed somewhere, or a bent piece restricting movement
My serger just stopped running 😢
Oh no! 🤞🤞 it's something simple
My serger not catching the fabric
Hi Annet, I'm not sure exactly what you're referring to, but I would try rethreading. Perhaps it's not forming a chain
I have an ez lock nancy sewing macheni put the needle sorry my ingles is not good😢😅
Sorry, I'm not familiar with that machine
I have the same exact machine what size nails
My new Singer Pro Finish hand wheel will not move. Help!
If there's nothing blocking it or jammed inside or out, or a needle isn't bent preventing it from moving, I would take it to the repair shop
my upper looper and the straight lower looper hit each other while i was sewing and now the serger won’t move since the pieces can’t move past each other. i’m not sure if a piece is bent or if my machines timing is off. do you know what this could be and how i could fix this?
i have a brother 1034d btw
My guess would be that something is bent. I would take it in for servicing
Sewing from Scratch do you think i could replace the part myself?
@@sophiaf3497 have you ever took your machine apart?
Wyntour Hall no i haven’t
the sewing jammed up and got stucked how to solve that, pls
Is a looper stuck in the fabric? This can happen when the knives aren't cutting properly. You'll need to cut the fabric out and then adjust the knives. Possibly sharpen them
thanks a lot
My singer s1478 serger the hand wheel is stuck ? How do I fix it myself please
I would look all around and inside to see what is causing it to seize. Could be loopers or knives binding on something, thread being pulled too tight somewhere, etc. If you can't see any issues then I would take it in to the repair shop
My top needled keep breaking they won’t hold . Omg I thought the first one was broke .....I bought another one and I’m
Having the same issue the top left and right will not hold omg help they keep
Breaking I’m loosing my mind helppppp
I'm not sure what you mean? The screws aren't tightening enough to hold the needles?
@@seasonallyproductive thank youuuu so much for replying. My right and left needle THREAD (I should have said that first) keep breaking after a few loops they just snap out of the needle. I’ve tried everything and they keep breaking
Hi, had the same problem, try good quality threads also thread the machine in the order instructed in the manual. Watch RUclips videos about your machine. Adjust thread tensions until thread chains correctly when sewing without fabric, then try with fabric and slowly adjust tensions until it works. Hope this helps
@@geoffsm100 bless you yes it worked
My serger is not cutting went hi am serger
This has happened to me before. Usually it's because the front knife has been pushed down or isn't in the correct position. It's an easy adjustment. There may be a small marking on the knife to show where to align it.
My serger hates me
Sounds like a very angry piece of machinery!

I have the same exact machine what size needles
I just got this serger and I threaded everything properly and it won’t even thread! The needle only moves when I turn the hand wheel, it doesn’t move but it makes a noise when I press the presser foot. Any idea of why this happens ?
I have the same issue and I’m so frustrated. I just got it the other day and it’s plugged in, lights on, and when do press the foot controller it makes a sound and doesn’t move😩
I have had the same problem and after spending the day researching on line I think I’m back to an issue with the stitch length or some lose screws closer to the feed dogs. If you find out how to fix yours please let us know…
Help my machine is identical to yours.. but i have put perfect but the neaddle. Thread break it please can you tell me whats is happening?
Sometimes this happens to me if the thread is hooked around the top guide
i have a older babyloc 5280E my problem is the chaining tongue keeps breaking on me. I have been trying to get the tension correct and not there yet either. But my biggest issue is I have replaced the chaining tongue 3 times and wonder why when the needles go down it hits the chaining tongue. I did purchase the correct needles for the serger because it does'nt use just the regular sewing machine needle. I am so frustrated, please help
Oh no! That sounds super frustrating. I don't have experience with that exact issue, but I would say if your needles are brand new and straight and still hitting pieces then something is out of whack. I'd be taking it into the repair shop if it was me
@@seasonallyproductive i changed the needles thinking they were possibly bent and it did seem to help. I used an old chaining tongue on it to test it out. I rethreaded the whole thing and started over. I am still at a loss as to why the chaining tongue has broke again. so frustrating.
