  • Episode #243 : Season 8 : The Hawaiian Adventures
    Hello Friends,
On this episode I push for the Island of Molokai after a week of repairs in Honolulu. Departing in the middle of the night in hopes of beating the light winds that were forecasted I found myself adrift in the middle of the Molokai Channel with more dirty fuel issues.
The 45 hour "Passage to nowhere" was a great sea trial and learning lesson!

I caught your live stream yesterday. I sailed from the age of 9 until 53 I’m now 59 I had spinal surgery where three bone spurs grew into my spine, they told me I’d never walk again but I walk very slowly with a cane. I spend most of my time in a damn bed. Your adventures make so many memories come back. It’s the next best thing to being on the ocean again I was in Marina Del Rey on a Catalina 30 her name was Prime Time. You are a god send. Thank you so much for allowing me to sail again through you. My favorite time on my boat was when I was alone. Nobody to keep entertained or play babysitter. I loved sailing at night I made many crossings leaving at midnight headed to Catalina I’d make sure I was past the shipping lanes set the autopilot on and go to sleep in the cockpit. Id let the rising sun wake me up then as I could see the island I would turn her around and head back. Id do this every weekend. Id get back into my slip Sunday night sleep on her get up put my suit on and head to work. I did this for at least 3 years. So many memories. Thank you again

This is great. Sailing vicariously through this channel too in a way - I’ve had a little rib for 2 years (my first boat at age 49) but really have the urge to start sailing. Good for you Greg, you made the memories. Hope to follow suit one day.

Get yourself a thermal switch, the KSD-9700 series are small and cheap, you can get them in normally open and normally closed versions, in a range of temperatures. They make then in plastic and metal casings. Strap one to your starter motor, or better yet, to the windings inside. Then hook it up to an alarm so you get some warning when you are overheating your starter.
You could also wire it so that your starter relay goes through it so you can't even run the starter if it is overheated, but there might be times when have to choose between a smoked starter and a broken boat, and an alarm gives you that choice.
I plan to add one of these switches to my alternator voltage regulator so that it gracefully shuts down if overheated.

I think I'd have said "Sea Trials" more that "Trails". But, hey, smooth seas never made a skilled sailor. I've learned more from my errors (I call that "experience") than my successes. And when I can, I try to learn from others' errors. I call that "wisdom".

@@SailorJames was there a lot of crud at the bottom? The Harbor I motor in an out of is all large stone breakwater. Sometimes it can be very rolly getting in the mouth of the Harbor, so there was always concern that crud would get stirred up and kill my engine. 😳

My boat now i have a spare for just about everything that could stop me moving foreward.. a cruiser i respected many years ago told me for the engine you need a spare starter,a spare water pump, spare alternator. My yanmar was brand new then. But i bought these anyways. I needed them eventually. Years later ,but i had peace of mind.

Interesting choice to try to sail directly from Waikiki to Hale O’Lono Harbor. You’re fighting current the entire way. We always started at night like yourself, sailed along Oahu’s South shore until past Kokohead and then made a tack towards Lanai. Attempting to enter Hale O’Lono at night or without a motor would have been very dicey. If any sizable South swell came up there can be a lot of surge in the harbor and the set waves can break across the channel entrance. Not sure about anchorage rules for Honopu Bay on Lanai but it’s a safe place and not far away is Kaumalapu Harbor, a barge terminal that is populated (unlike Hale O’Lono) and you could coordinate getting parts.

@@daveg4963 sailing is really easy man. It takes only a few days to learn. Trailoring is not easy or convenient but depends on youre goals too.The hard part is seamanship. And maintenance. Knowing how youre boat will handle certain conditions. So if a big boat is youre goal skip everything and buy the bigger boat. Because sailing is easy. Its all the other stuff. A bigger boat is far more comfortable and stable too. 30 feet is perfect for a first boat. I did that 34 years ago, never sailed a day and bought a 30 footer in honolulu. 1 year later i sailed that boat to south pacific and sailed around there for a decade. Lots of upgrades like tritea are what will cost you,but a boat 30 feet is less than 10k these days for a good old bost. If youre in sanfran look for yankee 30s. That was my first boat.
