fun fact: it's a core openxr feature that i think every game engine supports out of the box. all you have to to do on the developer side is to render an alpha channel. so of course the only vendor that actually implemented it on the runtime side is varjo for their enterprise headsets

Mikesky - I haven't been in Open Brush in a while. Is it connected to a site where artists can upload their stuff like Tilt Brush was with Poly? I actually downloaded tons of artists stuff from there as I thought I'd lose access but I think others have saved the stuff and hosted it elsewhere.

Aint Pico4 and Quest2 using teh exact same aprooach??
using 4x B&W IR Tracking cameras + 1 RGB main shoter..
You take the depth data from the B&W tracking cameras and overlay that on top of the RGB camera feed, and it wil create a depth gimmick with depth data in the view.. try to look at something that is poking out, like a plant etc and you can see it.. its what also create that warping effect.
The only reason between MetaPro and Pico4 to my understanding is that Meta have placed the two top B&W tracking cameras beside the RGB for a more ideal optimised depthdata stream in your direct view and not in your periphel view like Pico4, but weirdly enough they have used a way worse RGB camera then Pico4 so Pico4 is clearly delivering a cleaner and sharper RGB passthrough, as they RGB cam-sensor is higher resolution.
But if anybody knows the sensor model names of these tracking cameras on the MetaPro and the RGB camera pls share, that info, as its often the same "off the shelf components that is bouncing around on tons of VR headsets with this tracking approach, and also to conclude its simply aint the same B&W IR tracking cams from Quest2 that just been optimised for direct ahead depth data, as it does look a lot like the same on the tear down vids..

I used to be totally focused on VR, but I think I'm beginning to see the usefulness of MR/pass-through. I'm still not sold on viewing movies or other flat screen content inside a HMD, but maybe the coming generation of hardware with higher resolution and better lenses will make that more appealing. Good screen viewing would help enormously for productivity uses like 3D CAD where you really need to be working with technical materials and dealing with a lot of settings and data. Overall, though, simply being able to get a better view of your surroundings and set the usable space visually would be an improvement when using the Index.

In a few decades shit like this will be probably normal not just at home but maybe even outside in a limited form with super compact headsets / or visors / glasses I guess. Stores and whatnot could have their own "digital space" and design it however, which customers could see and interact with, like making orders at a restaurant with 3d examples of the food, maybe have some decorative gimmicks floating around the place too or your stereotypical virtual dancers. At home you could place your desktop screen in various places and activate it when you're there so you could just enjoy some videos while doing work in the kitchen or have an interactive media player for your music.

Mixed Reality & AR could be more popular if things like Leap Motion and Webcams could actually be used to well do MR/AR. I want to try those features but apps like DeoVR added Passthrough support AFTER they stopped supporting Android Phones and I guess Apple phones.
In this case DeoVR won't let you download the old APK and never used phone cameras and doesn't support cameras & webcams.
UltraLeap's Leap Motion had planned for support for this but, never bore fruit, and a user Github to allow this seems dead, PLUS UltraLeap segmented their software by changing the "Leap.DLL" into "LeapC.DLL" breaking older apps for no real reason. Also, their have no backward compatiblity for legacy apps that use that "Leap.DLL" file.
TLDR - I guess no company really pushed for broading MR/AR entry in respect to using generic cameras attached to headsets like the Rift CV1, Google Cardboard through iVRy, for example.

AR is the future of many activities, where is meta on this? All those game board nerds alone would give it strong initial hype.

Bro the Index can do this? Man, Valve is slacking… they should have opened support for this a long time ago!

Those Valve Index cameras need Linux support!

They work on Linux it's just a normal DMA webcam, but SteamVR for Linux is buggy, for OpenVR and OpenXR doesn't have native camera access, because of privacy concerns.

I think MR can be useful in the right circumstance, but a lot of the time I'd rather have a nice locking hinge so I could just lift the headset without having to take my headphones and controllers off every time I want to do something out of the VR

mixed reality is good for room setup or when you feel claustrophobic ..AR gaming is lame and gimmicky imo.
the index has a button on the right side i think idk my index been inside a box collecting dust..i read somewhere that you can hold that button and switch between VR and AR, but that didn't work on my end. what's the point of that button anyway? Power button? It doesn't do anything when i hold it or press it.

Yes it’s basically the same as the system button on index controllers. Allows navigation of menus without controllers connected too.

As a QPro and Index owner, said it before, I'll say it again:
Imagine my disappointment to discover that the much-talked about Passthrough Future manifested in my $1500 Fancy Facebook Hat still has all the quality-level of the 3D cameras found on the Nintendo 3DS.
That grainy, funhouse-mirror, soupy hot mess doesn't appear to have improved over something released 11 years ago.
