How long does the Valve Index last? (There's a fatal flaw)

- This is my Valve index after 10 months of nearly daily usage. Did it Survive?
Some of my time in usage was pretty rough, but generally it was just daily sometimes 6-8 hour play sessions along with some sleeping in VR if you'd believe that.

Can you make a video on the most reliable headsets?
hey ThrillSeeker, I work at a virtual reality arcade (worked, cause of covid) and we use the htc vive for half of our headsets, and we have that same issue that you stated at 7:48 and it is because of the cable. We use the 3 in 1 cable that is provided by htc (I'll link it) but we use that same pully system and it only takes about a month to a month and a half of use for us for one cable to die, and it is simply a matter of replacing said cable, which is a little pricey, but worth it for us. yes we do remind our guests to not spin, but for first timers it is extremely difficult to not spin. anyways just thought i'd let you know, it wasn't your headset but the cable, oh and we use a velcro cable tie on the headset to make sure the cable stays on the back of the headset and not on the side.
what i learned in this video:
-Valve has great customer support
-If possible, write down the serial numbers of controllers, cuz the text wears off
-secure the cables
wojtekpolska they do have verry good customrr suport, i had a problem( i got an steam accout from someone for free)that person took it back after 2 years, i told them the truth and guess what, they deleted all the games i have bought on the other account and they gave me allmost 1k€ on another account, to bad i couldnt order a valve index then cause i wouldve ordered it instalty allso 2 weeks after i spent all the money. (gifting friends) they put the vive on the store :(

Looks like Valve is one of the few companies in this day and age that still remembers that customer support is where the money is made in the long run
Valve's a private company, as long as they keep the office running, they do whatever they want. Most companies need to make money for stockholders.
support is not where you make money! thats where you lose money
They have you send back the original product, they fix it up and resell it under the title certified refurbished at a slightly reduced price. So I don’t believe they lose all that much money especially maintaining a good standing with their consumers.
That's how they got big Steam in the first place. They realised that instead of punishing the customer with anti consumer DRMs and restrictive policies, give them good customer support and service and they'll be loyal to the brand. Thats how Apple retains all their fans.
@@ryanmalin Nope. Business/Marketing/Advertising 101: Repeat customers are far more lucrative than having to repeat the advertising process and win over a new customer each and every time. When things go wrong is when the product fails. How you handle customer service and make things right is how you keep those hard-won customers.
And even if a won-over customer doesn't buy from you again, they WILL speak up about your company and it's trustworthiness in a positive light, which is invaluable in terms of your brand's public image and marketing strategies. It allays fears from potential customers who haven't made the jump yet in fear of getting ripped off, and let's them know that if worst comes to worst, the company will do everything they can to make it right or fully refund your purchase. And that does volumes to make customers more comfortable about their purchasing decisions.
So yes: it may be a loss of money in the shortest of terms, but it's a valuable, cheap investment for the long term.

I think most normal people will be fine
Valve has a history of great hardware design and questionable build quality. Lighter usage will result in fewer problems but rest assured, there will be problems. At launch, some of the controllers came with bad sticks out of the box so...
That being said, it is the best headset on the market so if you want the definitive experience you just have to deal with it.
that's what i was thinking the whole video
@@bezrodnyigor "you just have to deal with it" alright great. Monopoly, and fuck you, Valve is perfect, deal with it!
2LT Sheridan I’m not saying it’s a good thing. And neither Valve, nor Index are perfect by any means. To be completely honest, if I were to recommend someone (especially newcomers to VR) the PC headset, it would be Rift S. But if you know what you’re doing and want the most advanced consumer headset out there - it’s Index, and reliability concerns don’t really matter here.
@@bezrodnyigor Yes, you really are. That's EXACTLY what you're saying. :) I think we're done here..
Seems like Valve has really got you covered with the warranty.
Yeah I’ve had such problems with oculus support they seem to be much better

Oliver Eye oculus support is pretty nice about it but so is valve (edit) I meant steam support not valve
dynamic oculus is stingy about getting a “new” part for your oculus due to a defect, im trying to get a new one because my warranty has like 3 months left but i have the 3 dots glitch and I cant fix it, so im waiting for the oculus support to help me
@Mr. Vic a few more than 2
I'd like to say, I work at a VR Arcade, and I believe your "Starry overlay audio popping" problem was actually a cable problem. I don't personally own an Index (Yet, Getting mine later this week) but my arcade uses Vives with a pulley system for each of the headsets. I have had that exact problem you described in your video, and I can say with almost 100% certainty, that the problem was with the cable. After every 6 months or so one of our 10 cables does the same things you described. All we do is pull out the cable, get a new one, and connect the new one. That *should* fix that major problem. It is very much not an "If" but more so a "When" but the best way to keep it safe is after every session you unplug the cable and uncoil it so it is as straight as it can be.
Love the content.
you can make it happen less if you reduce the strain on your cables. cable ties ftw :=)
It sounds similar to a problem I had with my Vive. I had gotten some longer cables leading up the box, but every once in a while I would go through an entire "re-connect everything, reboot everything, redo it all" process. There was a point where it was happening constantly, really killed my want to play those games. Moved stuff around in my house and my computer ended up in a room which gave me a better play area and decided to hook it all back up. Used the HDMI that came in the box this time thanks to the extra space and no issues since.
The Vive cables seems like they are anchored a lot better on the headset itself, but that is probably something Valve can fix in further iterations with the Index.
"Getting mine later this week"
The problem with the Index is that you can't unplug or swap the cable from it like with other headsets.
thats whats good about the original vive's fat wide cable, if you twist it up its easy to see and undo.
This is a lot of good advice for anyone who owns a VR headset - Vive, Oculus, Mixed reality or whatever. I'm bummed out the durability is an issue and I hope Valve's next iteration takes this into account.
They better or I will not give them money
Very true. While it would be nice for future headsets to place increased focus on durability, I doubt the Index is notably *worse* than other headsets of today, when used under similar conditions.
Well, nothing lasts forever and that is the truth, even no matter how much careful or how much you look after it, things can still fail.
For the most part, if an item is used within it's life's range, it should last. This video is more of the worst case scenario and I don't think that you'll have much problems unless you use it a lot like he did.
@@Ruby_Mochii A VR headset is a full priced high end PC component, if it doesn't last as long as my graphics card or Keyboard and mouse then it's just bad design and you can't just chug it to "nothing lasts forever". My PSVR (Pretty much worst VR headset) which I've been using for a year and a half is still running strong without any issues except for blurry lenses since I used to clean it with my shirt and basically anything closeby that wasn't microfiber but that's misuse on my part
@@justghostie4948 it doesn't mean it's a premium that it's going to last forever.
You aren't always paying for reliability and the higher the specs, the higher the failure rate.
Someone else's Ferarri may not last as long as your Corolla, everyone knows that.
By far, the Valve Index is the best out there and they have put a lot of innovation.
You will never get anything perfect that's the best and like no other, there are always compromises and such thing doesn't exist.
VR has not been for very long, comparing it to something that has been for decades is unfitting. It's also attached to you and moves around more than your pc components.
I'm not promoting Valve, but that's just how it is in many things. If you're happy with what you've got well, I'm glad for you. If you don't want to spend that's fine as well, no one is forcing you.
As a new Index owner (I just got mine today!) and as someone who's never had a VR kit before I wanted to let you know ThrillSeeker that the fatal flaw for the Index is no longer a issues!
In addition to the tab on the Index (the one that is known to break) they have also added a new holding strap to the back of the headset to hold the cable. So now the cable drops off of the headset at the back of the users head and not from the side.
So they are listening to feedback and showing it with actions! :D
So, how has been your experience with the HMD in the last year? Everything is working properly?
please let us know man how's it doing
@@NurtureCooper I got mine last week and it has two straps on it. One on the side just behind the speaker that clamps the cable firmly in place and a second one on the left corner of the lower rung of the back side that holds the cable loosely. Does yours not have the second one? The second one does seem like it'll snap off easily if the cable was jerked though.
@@snapper26
I also got mine last year, back in March. I haven't played it probably as hard as a lot of people as my play space is rather restrictive, but I have played a lot of variety in games and the headset has always held up well in them with great performance and awesome visual fidelity (even though my computer isn't strong enough for the higher end settings). The cable does have a second cable holder on the back like the first poster mentioned and I haven't seen any signs of ware on the cable at all.
Not sure what kinda bad luck @KW Studios got to not have the second cable strap, I can definitely see it breaking easily if that isn't there, but like the video suggests there is always tape as a preventative measure or 'fix'.

@@smolderingawesome the pro controller uses the same stick hardware as the xbox 360 which is tried and tested, it's just joycons that use nintendo's new hardware which is dodgey
@@puddledelta6285 It's unfortunate, because Nintendo prides itself on QC. Their product failure rate is under 1%, as in that's what is expected from manufacturers producing Nintendo hardware. Obviously, some things fall through the cracks.
Another Well done video! Let's hope Valve will address these issues!
I hope somehow someone makes sure Valve sees this video.
These issues are not specific to valve. Cable wear is common failure, controllers get whacked and break, sticks get jammed even on the oculus, base stations are not as common failures that I have seen but everything else is pretty much common to ANY VR headset. It’s when parts aren’t available anymore that will be the problem. Oculus rift cv1 parts are not available from oculus anymore so people are gouging the crap out of spare parts and some of them aren’t even any good.
I see, the valve index is a $600 vr headset with included $400 tech support
Lol the Cosmos is way overpriced then. You get no tech support and have to pay for similar hardware.
Headset only costs $499
Compared to HTC, Steam tech support is from a different universe.
When I got my HTC Vive, its screen broke down after just a few months and I didn't get a replacement, and they wanted me to pay 300€ for the inspection. I didn't, but I had to buy a new visor for 200€ from third party. Soon after one of the controllers broke. I wanted to send it to HTC but after reading that they will probably just do the same they did with the visor and ask for 100€-150€ (more than a new controller is worth) I gave up and just fixed it myself.
Few years passed and Valve Index was released, I ordered one but didn't receive it for >3 weeks due to shipping issues. Losing hope of ever getting it, I contacted Steam support and they sent me a new one with DHL one day delivery for FREE. That's right, they sent me a new one AND gave me a refund. Can you imagine that.

10:00 also while you play, tuck a loop of cable into your waistband with enough slack that you can move your head around freely. this also removes cable weight, which may cause the index to become more front heavy, but it feels good to me.
I use a velcro strap (that came with the index) to connect a loop of the wire to the top headstrap. It takes weight off of the weakpoint and centers the wire on the back of your head (win-win!).
I made a belt strap and sewed a plastic clip on it so I can just clip that around my waist then a second one for below my left knee to route the cable. The routing gets the cable away from me. if it ever moves to the the wrong spot or if I step on it, I just kick my left leg out and its gone.

So basically:
Over-engineer the knuckles to the point they are PS, Nintendo or Xbox worthy.
The finish is too bad, but really not an issue as long as the glue doesn't get sticky or the plastic too glossy and slippery.
Try and unify the cable design so it is freely available in shops no matter the brand. Get a rugged/kevlar version as well.
After all, it's just DP, USB3 and power, right?
Headphone manufacturers have started this as well, though it's hardly a standard.
Anti-pull devices for cables are far and wide available and have been since as far as I opened electric devices.
A C-clamp with a screw, of a rubber molding with a lid.
Redesign the base-stations and or way of tracking.
Make the back head cushion replaceable as well.
use a different glue, perhaps epoxy for the rubber lens gasket.
You now, this aint bad, since you've enjoyed months of top notch VR play.
It would be way worse to have a really sturdy headset but a 'meh' VR experience.
From now on, if Valve listens to the RMA services, they can only improve.

I don't know why (well, that's a lie, I DO know why) more devices don't let you do this, but ESPECIALLY with high-end, expensive hardware like HMDs, they really need to standardize the practice of allowing you to just unplug (not desolder and then add a new one, because most people don't want to do that unless their back is against the wall) the cable, and plug in a new one.

I've had my regular vive for over two years now and I have never had a single issue with my base stations or headsett. I have however recently been getting the fairly common issue with the vive controllers trackpad not letting you click anymore.
That being said I don't come close to the number of hours you've used yours. I've been very on and off so I'm probably at somewhere around 400-500 hours.
It depends so much on how you use it and for how long. Many people had problems with their vive wands breaking but i never did. I have a index now and still haven't encountered any of these problems.

0:35 You have some kind of custom cable holder on your ceiling, which is holding the cable before the plug. The cable should disconnect at the plug, they probably made it this way to prevent the damage you have. This is not a problem with Valve's Index, you are using it out of terms, this is why your cable is breaking. I have an Index, and every single time is accidentally pull on the cable, the plug unplugs, which is supposed to happen to prevent too much tension on the cable/index.
if you mean the thing on the floor in that frame, it doesn't come out nearly easy enough to help with that specific issue, it's so that you don't damage your pc if you walk too far.
When using wire tape, start by wrapping it around just the wire a few times, then continue the same strand of tape around the anchor point and wire. Doing this will secure it a hundred fold. c:

@@MrChoklad Na that's bullshit. I've had my oculus for 2 years and have put well over 1000 hours into using it. I've had no issues at all with it besides software issues.
1000 hours is only a month and a half of actual use time btw. That's not very much time at all.
controllers that cost 280$ shouldn't be having issues in just 1000 hours, a headset that costs 500$ shouldn't need to be replaced in only 1000 hours, A base station that costs 150$ shouldn't just die after 1000 hours. Base stations shouldn't break PERIOD, you don't even touch them like ever. They literally sit in the corner of your room and you do nothing to it.
There are obviously design flaws on the Index if after 10 months and 1000 hours he's needed basically the whole entire 1000$ package replaced. I don't really care if he was break dancing or giving birth in VR. It is in valves best interest to make a more durable product so they don't need to replace hundreds of dollars worth of components when they break.
@@frizzykid100 I disagree with this alot tbh. Of course you should expect anything at this price to do its job no matter what but thats like saying a 100.000$ car should never have to be repaired or a 800$ knife should never have to be sharpened. The list goes on and on there is nothing that never ever breaks. Your argument for the base station for example is the same as argumenting a lightbulb should never fail. At some point it just becomes impossible to guarantee. Especially if it's something as small and delicate as modern technology. Also keep in mind vr is a very new field which is still being developed and improved constantly. Sadly the pest they can do at this point is to offer service included in the price, which in valves case is frankly amazing. This is the case with every premium product out there. Zippo for example doesnt exactly make a product worth their price but you get life long free repairs. Also I'm not sure how much you've ACTUALLY used your oculus but it aswell has alot of design flaws (trigger failure, thumbstick drivt etc.) which a ton of people have. Same as not everyone using the index will have the problems shown in the video. It just depends on every user individually since noone uses their products the same way.
@@pacted484 Not exactly. Each product you buy has a certain life expectancy for normal use that goes up as the price goes up. This clearly is no budget product and expected lifetime should certainly reflect that in being longer than 1000 hours without everything falling apart. When you buy a decent washing machine, you expect it to last at least say 10 years. You don't want to be repairing it after just 1 year of use.
Wow, glad I watched this before ordering one.
Re: customer support, I would be careful before assuming that Valve is going to take amazing care of the average user. This guy does have a RUclips channel with over 100,000 subscribers, so it could easily mean that they just know who he is.
I’ve had the headset for over a year and have almost made it up to 2k hours on it. Honestly speaking I have YET to encounter any issues. It truly still works like new for me.
I’ve actually even dropped the headset once, and the only thing that came off was the back piece that holds onto the wire which I replaced with one made with a tougher material thanks to a guy selling it on eBay using a 3-D printer to make it. definitely recommend looking for the piece on eBay.
Past that my controllers have been getting a little worn down and definitely don’t feel like new, but still work pretty good for something that’s been used for almost 2k hours.
My personal recommendation is to try to just keep this had to clean and taken care of as best as you can meaning..
• Keep the wire elevated and be sure not to twisted up so much when moving around
• Be sure to keep the head safe after using it. So getting a base for the headset and the controllers is a good choice.
• One other thing that I would recommend is getting upgrade pieces for the headset. A fan in the front for cooling and even a cloth made to go on the back of the headset which actually helps hold the wire a little better and keeps the back of the headset safe from scratches.
Honestly, I think the main thing that it depends on his whole well you take care of it and or what you do with it but seriously up to 2k hours of usage and still not encountering any problems. I’m sure anyone can do the same.
Oh, and as it for the base stations I’ve had the same two for just as long and have kept them on ever since I got them, of course whenever I turn everything off the bait stations, go onto sleep mode, but they don’t turn off completely.
Maybe the valve has fixed up their VR gear, but all I can say is again. I’ve had mine for a whole year getting 2k hours on it and have had no problems with it. I’m honestly waiting for it to happen at this point from everything I hear.
I really don't like the idea of having to rebind buttons, do at home fixes, expect to contact support, on a device that I'm paying 1000 dollars for.
that's why i'm probably going to wait and see what comes next in terms of fixes or just a brand new headset
Why am I even buying this thing and why is it hailed as such an elite headset. I don't understand. If I pay an entire 1k for a headset I shouldn't have to put up with shortcomings.
It is the best headset we can buy at the moment that's why its hyper up. Its an amazing headset. I've had my index since launch and I have hade none of these problems.
Because despite its durability problems, it is still one of the best VR headsets and controllers and especially one of the best Lighthouse headsets. And also not eveyone has the lighthouse problems.
Me and my friend are saving up money for PCs and indexes.
This video is gonna be very helpful when we eventually encounter issues with the index. Thanks!
AnyoneWhoIsEveryone or when you get an oculus or vive instead
This Account I mean. That’s what I was gonna do before the index was announced/launched.
But I would rather have an index than the Vive or rift.
@@jupitercentre1029 We all would. If it didn't cost a thousand dollars and had this big quality issues.
Mestre do Val that’s fair. I wasn’t gonna buy the index for a while anyways. (Mostly because I don’t have money either heheh). But these quality issues should hopefully be resolved by the time I can afford it
Yeah, I also got my Index in the first week of shipping.
My original hmd had a malfunctioning headphone upon arrival and the entire hmd was replaced.
More recently I got the common stick drift in the left controller and got it replaced. My serial numbers also faded.
My right trigger squeaked awhile but stopped. The grip on that controller also got cracked after a hard hit, and I mended it using plastic bonding agent.
The finish on my controllers started getting scuffed by my grip extensions, so I custom wrapped them both in carbon fiber to protect them.
All my RMAs have been really good, they sent me replacements without me having to ship anything to them first.
With how much down time? I've never RMA'd something and had issues, it's not something praise worthy. The turn around time is the real concern.
Nothing lasts forever things break or stop working. I think the best part of this video is the valve customer care support knowing if this happens valve will be there to help you. That gives back some hope to all the things that could happen. I have owned electronics that broke that i had totally replace myself and it sucks. Being assured that valve will replace these things makes me happy that i chose the valve headset even more.
The problem with the cable isn't the tab, it's the kinking the tab itself causes, this is on the Oculus and other headsets that all use a tab to tighten the cable to the side of the headset right after it's portr connection, best advice is instead, find away to use the bending of the cable so it doesn't bend too far in one way which will cause the inside cables to twist and then kink with time.
Just got my Index a month ago and this video is giving me h e l l a anxiety lmao
I just paid for my order and this video is giving me anxiety. I'm already looking up how I can refund if it turns out to be as flimsy as he mentions. I trust Valve though, but man if the product is as faulty as he says then there's no real fixing that with customer support.
@@CelGaming exactly. I almost bought one yesterday, but decided against it. Then I saw this video. If I'm spending A THOUSAND FUCKING DOLLARS on a VR headset, it should be indestructible smh.
dont be, valve has great customer support and it is very like that you wont be sleeping in vr or doing handstands or extreme stuff
ive had the vive, vive pro, and index ( no base stations 2 or kuckles)
and have had to replace one vive wand and 2 base station 1s and i dont play it as much as this guy. kind of annoyed.
@@augustheat wow. Thanks for that info
Overthinking, lost my mind, push my head to overdrive!
Good music taste. Like your video too!
Thats super sad... I'm still using my CV1 almost everyday, and the only things wrong with it is there is no headphones working, and the controllers drift a bit. Other than that, it still works. I've had this head set for almost 3 years now! Hope Valve does something, especially for a $1000 headset...
Zie Wolfen they need to make a revision to it that will solve these issues, kinda how Sony would make a new model ps4 quietly
I have a CV1 that I use a couple times a month and it is still working as it did day one. Just throwing this out there for folks who are more on my end of the VR use spectrum.
@@paullucci I use my cv1 for working out. Box vr 30 minutes s times a week and plenty of gaming. I have probably sweated litres of sweat into that headset and the only issue I have had was my left touch controller and that was my fault due to punching a wall. It still works 99 percent of the time. A very well built headset
This has made me appreciate how well the OG Vive HMD is made. I bought mine used - I have over 500 hours in VR in a wide variety of games. It looks tatty, but works perfectly. The cable had a kink like the one you showed when I bought it - a much worse kink actually, it's like a permanent right angle. Doesn't affect it.
That one base station that survived
_I have lived so long that I have outlived all of my friends; the horrors I have seen and the parts of the kit being replaced left and right_
We need more companies to makes more high specs, higher quality headsets to compete with the index. Not just more budget oriented ones like Oculus is doing. That's why I've been really curious about HP's next headset since they teased it. Even if we have almost no info on it, from what we know and the pictures it looks promising so far.
Martin B-E Budget oriented VR are the future of VR. We need things like the Rift S because if we don’t keep trying to decrease the entry price of VR it’ll never truly take off like it could because too many people wouldn’t be willing to pay up.
the hp looks exactly like the first reverb only with off ear speakers from valve.
"Just from using the headset as intended"
"i occasionally sleep in VR"
...what.
Well to be fair quite a lot of people sleep in vr. Mostly Vrchat to be exact. Id say a solid 5 percent of people that have a good vr have slept in it at least once.
@@elonsneko8897 I dont understand why you would ever need to sleep in vr like just leave it on and sleep that way
@@papa_andy4497 What? Maybe I'm missing something but why would you leave your vr on and go to sleep normally?
what I picked up to remember:
1. valve cares about customer support and even if your serial numbers wear off they won't say "oh its your fault, we can't help you"
2. secure and create a pulley system to reduce strain on wires
3. write down the serial numbers for future customer support
4. make sure to not click randomly on the triggers so they don't burn out (rare but it does happen)
5. have a strong-ish PC to handle some of the beefier games
6. A good idea to get the knuckle trackers for more immersion experience quality.
This was the first thing I did with every HMD I have (Vive, Pimax) using electrical tape and tighten the spots on the cable which has high mechanical stress. But as an electrician I already got suspicios and taped them before anything could happen. So far my Index cable looks still new. Fingers crossed. :)
8:45 those problems also happen with the WMR headset that I have ( HP ). The cable itself is way better than there 8:45 but still inside is slowly dying. So its just general VR problems with the quality of the cable
the same problem is with oculus. My first oculus cv1 cable died, the problem is that they are not selling it anymore and resellers are selling just the cable for over 100$, funny thing is I was lucky enough to win an aunction of a second hand headset + sensor for like 80$.
Im glad that my og vive has really fat cable on it, still works like new after 2 years
Laughs in original Vive
Seriously, that thing is made of depleted uranium or vibranium or something, ive hit that fucker so many times without any issues at all. Sucks the controllers suck tho
Zip-tie your cable to the BACK CENTER of your headset. This is more comfortable and will keep the cable from breaking the side support.
And here I am with a Rift CV1 from 2017 still working perfectly with at least as much use on it as your Index. Oculus built the OG Rifts like tanks.
I was just getting ready to place a order for one. Thank you for the advice I guess I'll wait for gen 2
As someone who's owned (and owns) a Valve Index Headset, I got mine in... August/September. It was fantastic. No issues, nothing, but around christmas, I had practially everything die on me.
I got the red light of death on my Base station (Which took over a month to replace). My Valve index tether became faulty and eventually stopped working. (Over two weeks to be replaced). I had my left controllers analogue stick become faulty and eventually stop working (One week to be replaced). I finally got my tether and within the same day, my headset died. After waiting another two weeks I finally got a replacement. By this point I've had to wait roughly two months to finally get everything together, and after two weeks of use, ie 4 days (as i only played on weekends) The tracking in the headset died. So I'm on my third headset currently.
I've effectively lost 1/4th of my warranty just replacing all the parts to the point I can happily use everything like I used to.
I haven't got a chance to open mine yet as I am abroad, but I definitely will try to preserve mine with your tips.
for the pixel flicker issue i got a new cable and that fixed it for me
Same here, people need to upvote comments like these so people know this. My warranty expired, and they even sent me a new cable for free.
And mine, keep in mind, had gotten to a point where it completely failed.
Problems I have with my index: broken small plastic in the cable, thumbstick drift in the left controller (I am not able to walk backwards anymore), and squeeze noise in the right trigger. And sometimes the finger tracking is very messy.
I would love to to request new controllers... but I don't live in USA :/, I live in a country without official support or selling, the shipping from my house to Miami for example will be 90-100 dollars, and I guess I have to pay for the shipping from USA to my house after, so in that situation will be maybe almost 200 dollars only for the controllers, ahh... I miss my cv1, what can you recommend me to do?
7:52 has been going on since I've had my first and second rift s. ⚰️
Rift s cables are out of stock. 😕
ErikLew you still have a warranty on it
@@NotGoodAtRUclips I honestly don't know 🤔. I'll probably request a support ticket.
just get a quest :P
It could also be dust that has been burnt in the lenses. This can happen if the lenses have been exposed to direct sunlight
Recently I also had to send back my controllers, their support was very helpful and immediately made an advanced RMA sending me new controllers before requiring me to send mine back.
The reason the index’s cable was breaking is that spinning around twists the wire until it starts breaking, after your done playing spin your headset till the wire isn’t twisted
Who here doesn’t even own an index or any type of vr gear and is here because of recommended 😆
Ok. Pay 1000 dollars! For a headset. It will start failing in less than two years. Great thanks! Lmao.
HELP! The index does not last 6 months!!!! I have many controller and headset problems in the one year I have had my index. I think this is a huge problem and the ONE year warranty is not long enough since the controllers only last 3-6 months each..... The nentendo switch has a similar problem and in the UK they are suing nentendo to up the warranty because of poor quality. This is what Valve needs to do!!! We all need to come together on this. Who else has problems with their index? Please do another video in this!!!
The pixel issue is the cable connection on the breakaway point usually. The pins on it bend and wear out. I had to get a new cable for that. We fixed one cable so it is fixable but yeah that happens it just randomly does that.
I recommend every index owner to buy a spare gasket, stick a little label on it saying 'fitness' or whatever, then only use that for games you know your gna sweat into and switch it out for not so physical games. As for the back material, make the head size as big as possible and use the memory foam pad thing it comes with so that the back of your head is touching that instead of the index fabric, then tighten again.
I had both my controllers break on separate occasions, the first i ripped out the thumb stick entirely, it was still usable after popping off the cover and placing it back but the sensor had ripped off and Steam support gladly sent out a new one. The second was a random issue, whenever i gripped the right controller, it would completely disconnect. Took me literally forever to find out why it was doing this, after spending weeks on steam support they replaced it ( because it was still happening when connected via USB).
Never had any issues or breaks on the actual HMD, but i'll keep the tab thing in mind.
Thanks. :)
Reminds me of the days when we had to blow on Nintendo cartridges
Gen 1 probs
If I'm being honest that's probably worse for the cartridges than just cleaning them
This makes me want to retract my dream of getting VR this year. Going to wait for future generations.
I think he may have gotten a defective model or something. I've never heard of people having so many problems with the Index. Although I am an Oculus user and wouldn't know about any of the valve headsets, I've never had these problems with the Oculus Rift or Quest. Apart from the squeaky triggers for Rift which I easily fixed
OG Vive from launch checking in, still working 100%. Not even from "normal usage", this thing has been abused. Controllers/headset smacked into walls and the ceiling, the thing is built like a tank. I could upgrade to the Index, but wireless is easily a no-compromise.
I've actually managed to get rid of the squeaking. I don't use it that much, so I can't say if it is a permanent fix, but it works for now. All I did was, that I took a syringe with canola oil, pressed down the trigger, and put some of the oil inside the trigger(note: turn the controller with the thumbstick facing up, to let gravity do its thing). It may leak from the bottom a little, but in few minutes of cleaning and it was done(note: try to press the trigger as much as possible, to get the oil everywhere). Be careful not to scratch it while inserting the syringe, I scratched mine, but that was because I did it for the second time and was careless. I don't know why Valve hasn't oiled the triggers themselves...
I Personally had my Headset since a year and maybe 500 hours of usage.
I guess your intense usage is a big Part of the problem
Imagine paying 1000$ for something and then you have too be afraid to use it.
@@Unknown-sz8kg Meanwhile here I am with my CV1 Oculus Rift for 3 years headbutting walls smashing controllers against walls knocking trackers off desks and it all still works cost less than 500...20 hours a week easily 3 years of usage.
Seeing how dusty and hairy your headset and controllers are I can see why they squeak. Please keep your equipment clean and take care of them.
used vive torture test: lasted a month
I've been using a Gen 1 Vive for years, my only failure has been in my base stations. Because I kept them powered 24/7 one died on me.
@@meddy572 for me the headset had a hardware issue and i got a permanent error 208
that's crazy I had my vive from launch until 6 months ago when I got the index (mostly because my vive wands had been broken and I was already going to be out 300 bucks getting new ones) but the HMD still works.
@@meddy572 Normally there are less problems keeping them spinning 24/7 than having them power off and on each day
what are people doing ot the vive to be able to kill it? i used mine for years pretty much like a gym, used it constantly, it looks as good as the day i bought it.
Hey! I am on Vive Pro and I have put around 1500 hours in it. I have the thin vrcover leather face pad and wireless adaptor. I have no issues with my headset. Controllers work and when they start squeaking, WD40 helps ;) I always put my headset on a stand when I don't use it and charge the controllers daily. I have three batteries for the wireless kit and charge them sequentially, so that every battery has been charges same number of times. I have mounted the battery holder at the back of the headset, giving the headset great balance. I think Vive pro is a great set of kit!
Wow, my Vive works after 4 years of daily usage.
All i had to do was the controller touchpad fix on both for 1 time.
Best purchase ever. I will avoid the index because i can not pay 1000€ for something that breaks in no time.
I've been considering an Index and I think Im gonna hold off now. Hopefully the upcoming HP VR headset uses an updated version of the knuckles with the same screen as the index and inside out tracking. I don't want to deal with sensors but I do still want 120Hz in VR. I will gladly buy it if I don't have to open some shitty launcher to launch Steam VR....
Lookin at you Oculus and Microsoft
@Zwenk Wiel You don't need to get specific hardware or to download modded software for other platforms, SteamVR works on anything
Rift S gang where you at?

Valve is an amazing company, i broke my left hand controller within the first month of using it, ripped the thumbstick out entirely when it caught on a pocket during beatsaber
Valve customer support quickly told me that the warranty did not cover this, but that they would sent me a free replacement anyway. Always been great, Valve.
You murdered it, I cannot see how anyone could break it that bad, except you...
Spending 1k on this and just about every single part of it needs to be replaced within 1 year. Ouch. Valve really needs to work on this if they want VR to grow.
I mean valves customer service is Superb. You basically get a new headset if it wears down
Squishy_NoU warranty is only 1 year what u Gonna do after that
I won't use mine like that, that's the kind of amount of use for.....uh...yea...err..nvm
The cable holder is the strain relief for the cord. Given the name, you should be able to understand why if it breaks that you'll have a damaged cord.
cable issue is an issue for EVERY cable headset if you dont know to be careful. Same thing happened on my vive because I was turning in circles and twisting the cord. Just be aware its an issue and baby it and you should be good.
when you broke pog
lol "I used bleeding edge tech every day, for hours a day for a year and abused the ever living shit out of it, and it started to fall apart" "I sweat all over the controllers and never cleaned them, and they are dirty now!?>!?!?!>?!?"
wow. shocking revelation bro.
Valve is still being Valve. I'm on Index number 4 in slightly over a year, HMD just died mid gaming session last night after less than 2 months of use. Can't wait for the next Index to be released, hopefully the new one will be more durable and less of a headache.
So.........
- Get Plano lens covers so that the delicate coating of the lenses doesn't get permanently scratched, got some from VR optician.
- Tape the cable tab
- Re-map to avoid analog button clicks
- Get a controller cover for the controllers.
- Never touch the base stations after they're setup, maybe get used Vive ones as a backup.
- Write down the serial codes of the controllers.
If this was aimed at mainstream consumers with limited technical prowess like the Quest then this would be beyond unacceptable, but since most of this can be avoided (maybe) and this is more of a device for hardcore tech enthusiasts, I guess it's ok?
Warranty seems to be helpful unlike most brands.
I have an Odyssey for over two years(1k+ hours of usage) and it still looks and functions just like a new one
, and i haven't seen many people complain about problems with this headset other than the comfort.
I guess Samsung really nailed it when it comes to build quality.
