    Wonder Woman was never a tough sell. It's just a tough story to tell right.

    • @Dularr
      @Dularr 7 лет назад

      Well, I felt that was due to several factors. DCEU movies were getting lower and lower critic review scores. Gal Godot previous acting roles were not well regarded, to the point she was considering leaving acting. Patty Jenkins hadn't directed a movie in twelve years. Let's hope we don't have to wait another twelve years for another Patty Jenkins movie.

    My sister is 17 and I've never seen her invested in a superhero like Wonder Woman. She was happy and surprised that a woman directed such an amazing film. She even started playing injustice and wants to dress up like her for Halloween, representation is important.

    I would like to point out Wonder Woman has a much smaller budget than the films you're comparing her to. Batman V Superman and the Dark Knight Rises had budgets of 250 million. While Wonder Woman had a budget of 149 million. So even if she only comes close to making as much money as they do, you could say the film was far more successful at the box office.

    • @StrawberryLegacy
      @StrawberryLegacy 7 лет назад +4

      James Parker Yes!!! And while Wonder Woman was advertised pretty well nearing the release it was nothing compared to the BvS marketing so they probably blew less on that too

    A point about Scarlett Johanson: I think it's unfair to argue that the failure of her comedy is somehow a mark against her. A Black Widow movie would do just fine because most people would go to see it for the character and the fact it's a MCU film, not the actress. I think that very few movie stars sell that many tickets on the basis of their faces, especially when dealing with these blockbuster films.

      Sequel to Swamp Thing called The Return of the Swamp Thing ( in 1989) total box office for it's entire theatrical run was approximately $192,816 which is fair less than $ 8 million also written as $8,000,000. However they did a TV series afterward and made it more like first movie and less like a comedy.

    Grace, it is beginning to bother me how you bring down Wonder Woman when it is doing something blockbusters almost never do: hold on the 40-30s on their second and third weekend. With these drops it will surpass the lifetime domestictly of both Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman. As long as it gets 350 overseas (very likely since it is already at 300) it has a good shot of matching Suicide Squad, and considering how much cheaper it is, it seems like a given it will have a bigger profit than the rest of the DCEU movies, even if the worldwide gross is slightly lower.

      N.W.A. the fact she has made more money than almost all Superman movies and could possible surpass Man of Steel is a triumph. when that happens then there should be no denying the success. in fact eventhough MoS and SS both opened way higher, WW has pulled ahead at same point in time. If the trend continues then she has a big chance to pass both films and even BvS domestically. It's too bad she isn't as big internationally but maybe WW2 will change all that. look at Captain America.

    • @callum-1818

      Guardians of the Galaxy isn't a team-up movie, The Avengers or The Justice League is a team up movie. A team-up movie is when characters who aren't normally together appear in the same movie for the same purpose. Guardians just so happens to be a group of characters, but they aren't a "team-up"

    Grace you are really overcompensating to appear "fair and balanced" - this movie is performing damn well and these holds deserve attention! It made MORE on its third weekend than 'Civil War or 'Age of Ultron - two movies that cost well over a hundred million more to make and had much weaker competition. Domestically, it has already passed the entire runs of Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, 'Winter Soldier, Logan, the last two Spiderman movies, ALL X-men movies, all Thor movies, etc......there's really no qualifiers at this point. ;)

    • @BeyondTheTrailer

    • @JUANxxTNAFAN

      Beyond The Trailer What an unfair comparison! You're comparing two sequel ensemble films to a franchise starting origin film!! Did you do that with Dr Strange, Antman, Thor, Captain America...etc. Are you going to do that with Black Panther and Captain Marvel? Don't be so hypocritical.
      Wonder Woman is currently having an historic run at the box office! The fact that you cant even admit that is astonishing considering how you vehemently defended a shitty movie with historically horrible holdovers like BVS. Can't wait until she passes MOS, SS and BVS domestically to see how you try and spin that negatively! Hell when she passes MOS and SS World Wide youre probably going to claim its a failure because she didn't reach a billion... >.

    So glad Wonder Woman is still killing it. It's already surpassed the box office for every MCU origin movie which is a feat unto itself. Given how the second and third movies of the MCU trilogies seem to make I wouldn't be surprised if a Wonder Woman sequal will eventually make it into the billion dollar club.

    • @bdtiger0770
      @bdtiger0770 7 лет назад +2

      'Wonder Woman will eventually make it into the billion dollar club'. Sorry to offend you, but what are you smoking? It will be very hard for WW to even reach $400M at overseas which is a norm for PG-13 superhero film now-a-days. Even movies with less iconic characters than WW made well over $450M in international markets. People at overseas doesn't like blockbuster films which push some agenda too hard.

    • @kaichen04
      @kaichen04 7 лет назад +2

      No, it won't. It still has dozens of markets to open. To be fair, it's predicted to beat all other DCEU pictures when it's done and most of Marvels, including all Marvel origin films. It should end at 350 million domestic and 800 million worldwide.

    Hi Grace, I finally got to see Wonder Woman and I absolutely loved it. I have followed your coverage of the movie, and can't help but wonder (no pun intended): Do you think that Allan Heinberg will be back to write a WW2? Especially considering how no media have credited him for his part in the Wonder Woman success? Thanks in advance :) PS: I did post this question before getting to your comment about Allan Heinberg.

  • @nicholirobinson170

    Point taken. That is Why the studio is still silent on WW2 and Patty returning. They r waiting for the final tally$. + R are U saying Patty does not deserve so much credit? The screen writer deserves more! Screenplay is one thing. But Patty brought it to life. Like the improvised boat screen. And No Mans Land which she fought to be included.

    MARVEL'S biggest solo debut outing was of course Dr Strange. WW has already outperformed it critically and I think it will come close commercially. I think Dr Strange's numbers are a good benchmark.

    • @andrewgiordano6880
      @andrewgiordano6880 7 лет назад +1

      Iron Man actually had the biggest solo outing (domestically) with a $98 million opening and a total run of $318 million. The foreign box office was very weak at that time for Marvel because it wasn't a built up brand. For example, Iron Man made almost double domestic than Ant-Man (180/318), but Ant-Man made $100 million more than Iron Man foreign. If superhero films had a strong foreign box office returns back then, Iron Man would probably be in the 700 million range.

    Buffy was a great at showing female power without sacrificing femininity, and also the pains of teenage years transitioning into adulthood. (Not to mention relationships, absent father figures, first loves, second loves, coming to terms with sexuality, etc)
    I think Joss can tell a story when he's given time to tell it - when the characters have earned their moments. I just don't think he's great at condensing his views, and he seems to have gotten way more political (as everyone has) lately.

    Its drops are literally unreal. No one had any hopes for it to "break records". People were literally tracking it to be ~70m and now its gonna make more than half the MCU

  • @cjqnsnyc

    I enjoy your analysis of the BO Grace, but you are really pushing too hard to appear balanced as far as WW is concerned. Let's give credit where it is due. The film had so much to overcome in the eyes of the public. That it's succeeded this well is deserving of the attention it's receiving. There's no need to downplay it or temper it with asterisks.
    For me, a major fan of the character since 1975 and Lynda Carter, I'm still in awe that we even have this film. I can tell you, every single comics character I have seen in films since Superman in 78, there wasn't a single time that I didn't wish for a film featuring WW. Not one single time. I'm beyond happy that WW is FINALLY getting what she always deserved.
    Let's be happy with that.

    Thank you so much, Grace, for mentioning that Joss Whedon's work is not as bad as people make it seem. Yes, that Wonder Woman script was *BAD* (I've seen screenshots on Tumblr), but he is not completely without his merits. Firefly and its movie Serenity remain very high on my favorites lists for tv/movies respectively, and when I think about characters like River, Inara, and Zoe? Let's not forget Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which though I've never seen any of it, I do know is a beloved series. Heck, it's thanks to that series that Cobie Smulders was casted into the MCU. As long as the right people work with Joss and keep him on the right track, he can deliver some great material, I know it.

    I like that you keep giving props to Alan Heinberg. Writers deserve far more credit than they're usually given.
    On Whedon, I expect he'll do a good job, but it's not a guaranteed home run. Some of his work has needed time to hit its stride (e.g., Firefly, which wasn't given the time to develop properly), while others have faltered after a while (e.g., Buffy's last season plus); sometimes, it's just not really worked for me (e.g., Cabin in the Woods).

I saw the film twice and absolutely loved it as for the Black Widow movie I think it could still do good as Scarlett is known and more popular in that role. I do plan to see Transformers The last Knight I am going to the 7:00Pm screening tomorrow. The series is a guilty pleasure of mine. I know they are not great and IMO the second one as god awful but other than that I have been entertained by the series.
