My reasons: -Games asking for too much of my time. As an adult I have a job and other responsibilities. Can’t sit around gaming all day to “get gud” to compete with others who can sit on the couch all day playing games. -Asking for more money after I’ve bought the game at full price by asking me to pay for completed content that was intentionally cut to sell me later. -internet required for single player. Aka I can’t play a game I purchased without asking a server that won’t be around forever to. Basically I don’t own what I buy. -Cost of games in bad economy forcing me to choose very wisely on what game to buy instead of buying 2-3 games like I used to. -Big promises, underwhelming product. -Games development budgets being too high when most gamers just want good performance and a fun game. Graphics should not be the first priority. Art design is way more important than realistic graphics imo. These are reasons I just don’t buy as many games as I used to and there are others like me and that hurts sales
Your first reason is why Fall Guys is still my go to game. I can't be bothered to start most other games because I have to waste a bunch of time "getting good." And that includes the weekly free game(s) on the Epic store! I collect them but can't find/make the time to play them.
"Art design is way more important than realistic graphics" a good example of this is minecraft. it looks amazing for its style. ya it doesn't look realistic, but it is beautiful.
Would also like to add install size. Many games have install sizes of 80gb to 120gb, you have to delete other games and possibly download for hours before being able to play ( not as bad for city folk with better internet than mine I admit)
It's time the monetization bandwagon came off the rails. Or at least became less of a focus, and MORE focus given to new ideas, creativity and new games that offer something new to explore.
Still plenty of game developers out there that don't focus on monetization. FromSoft, Santa Monica, Insomniac, Sucker Punch, Hideo Kojima, and Capcom are still making top notch, complete AAA titles. And that's just off the top of my head, I'm sure there are way more.
3:18 I remember in High school, a bunch of people mis-saw or mis-heard the price for the Nefarious Horse Armour and now I’d say its a legit Mandela Effect. People remember hating it, not just for being ‘just horse armor,’ but for also being *$20 USD* for ‘just horse armor…’ Obviously, it was $2.50
Did everyone forget about the fourth round of DLC for MechAssault in November of 2003 that costs 5 bucks? That's almost three years before horse armor, so "the first one in the water" wasn't Bethesda. They don't even deserve that credit....
Patenting gaming genres of must be one of the seven sins of modern era. Edit : Also weird how Fntastic with their new shenanigans didn't made it into this list.
#4 should be #1 cuz this is going to monopolize the gaming industry.. seriously with all these gaming platforms being bought up it’s only going to get worse
Speaking of horse armor, I remember the Xbox sale where they specifically called out that all Oblivion DLC was half off, except for horse armor, which had its price doubled! That was a humorous sale.
If Nintendo would just open a digital store where they charge around Digital Console prices ($5-$15) for ROM downloads on PC, maybe even release their own emulator, people would be a lot happier with them, but they're not going to do that, they don't want us to be happy.
no thanks to the 12 to 15 hour AAA game. Please stick to 50+ hours, I want to get what i pay for. If you are gonna screw around with bad short game durations, lower the price drastically.
I rather have a 12-15h game filled with great content than a 50h+ game that just has a lot of roadblocks and shit just to extend the time of it, or too large worlds so it just feels empty.
oh man, can you imagine another Obsidian Fallout? yes please. the whole PSN issue and removing original Hoziron is so greedy. it's like they don't wanna give players the freedom NOT to buy a remaster because they know how much nobody would. and they wonder why people pirate games.
Even if they didn't replace it they would just raise the price of the original Horizon to be $10 less than the remaster to avoid people buying the original for $20 and then upgrading from that. There's a reason that Spider-man (2018) is still so expensive despite being 6 years old and a last gen game. Having a remaster upgrade prevents them from having to lower the price because it's no longer an "old game."
"12 to 15 hour AAA game"? Like, a game I would have to pay $80+ to buy... that I finish in 12 hours? That game would make minimum wage. If you make minimum wage, then every hour you work to afford that game would only get you one hour of enjoyment out of that game. That's some pretty horrible return.
Even if they started work on one right now, it would take them at minimum 4 years to make. And lets not forget that The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed are still in development.
Shawn Layden spitting facts! When my game of the year is a card game made by one person (Balatro) thats a sign that devs/publishers have lost their way smh
First step to try and beat fortnight Build a game engine that everyone uses so you gain license agreements. Step 2 make a game people want to spend many hours playing
To add to the PlayStation Stars one, they also removed the Wallet Funds option as a claimable reward. That one was so sudden that people who called customer support about it received confused responses and even some responses stating that it must've been a mistake or a bug. Afterward, they changed their tune and answered, "PlayStation did that intentionally."
I refused to sign their new TOS for Stars, the Wallet Funds was the only good thing about it, and as I buy mostly physical, it took forever just to get $5 from the small amounts of DLC I DO buy.
Would love another Obsidian Fallout, once they are done with The Outer Worlds 2. As long as they have creative freedom, more then 18 months to create it in.. and Tim Cain should be involved again (he is still a contractor to Obsidian). Get the old band back together I say!
While Halo moving to unreal might not be bad in that instance, reducing the number of gaming engines isn't a good thing. Unity's garbage pricing model change, though rolled back, is only a harbinger. (Broadcom's moves with VMWare's another example of that behaviour. Shkreli's move with Daraprim is an example in the physical space.)
@@allie12212 yup, turn your internet off and try to play a few games. If not right away withinn 30 min of playing it kicks you out of the game and says it needs to be online to check the license. COD campaign, Spider-Man 2 Astro. Single player games demanding internet access is total BS. Why should you have to check my licensing when I purchase the game from the PlayStation store in the first place total bullshit
7:50 I agree with you on this whole topic. In fact, if this kicks off and Halo is once again celebrated as a franchise because of their switch to Unreal, I wonder if Bethesda will take the hint and consider a possible switch on their engine as well. I've heard the arguments on why they think it isn't worth doing but who knows - new chapter right? I'm very interested to see if Halo can return to its former glory in modern times.
As someone who is also "old" and used such classic methods such as Pirate Bay, Limewire, and Napster...yeah, I.P. law, especially where video games are concerned, is a highly dangerous and outright hill for some publishers/developers to die on. It is the single most leading factor in Nintendo being able to bully other companies or individuals, do ass backwards moves such as patenting a "mechanic" they themselves didn't even invent, and basically trying to be the one king to rule the kingdom full of kings. This behavior leads straight into the monetization side of things, because if you don't follow their commands or do their bidding, your suddenly hit with a cease and desist, or worse, due to the fact that they think they directly call all the shots, and set the precedent for everything going forward from there....but I think we're already passed the point where this practice, predatory and shallow as it is, is able to be stopped since they feel empowered to continue down this path, CEOs are starched-suit moneymen who hate video games as well as game culture, and courts do nothing in general to back customers of these companies products, and unless a dev/publisher with big brass balls comes along to question why this is the direction the industry SHOULDN'T be going we're kind of just stuck in this perpetual cycle of uninspired, uncreative gaming because a miasma of fear is busy killing off imagination and above all stymying FUN Dangerous is putting it lightly, as these things are mutually exclusive to the creativity of any game. I genuinely feel bad for current gamemakers who may have the next big kick ass idea, but won't bother with so much as trying without their vision being bastardized out of greed or martyred out of some fake law claim because their company didn't come up with it first...
I don’t blame companies for their crappy monetary practices and greedy ideology, I blame consumers and their apparent complete lack of self control when it comes to giving their wealth to these entities for the latest and greatest “shiny” things. Fact is, if people didn’t buy it we would not have it. Unfortunately, “wealthy” people seem to love micro transactions, loot boxes, live services, etc.,etc.,etc. These companies won’t stop until we stop rewarding them with our money and attention.
I'm glad you covered all the Nintendo and Sega nonsense. I can't be the only one who thinks it's really pathetic for Nintendo to be suing over Palworld at the same time as working on their own Minecraft rip off!!
How is it that narrative on horse armor finally came full circle? Even back then, I remember them saying horse armor was basically just a test to see if dlc could work and what they could do with it
I still have the original Zero dawn on my steam wish list still lets me buy it.Also regarding the whole PSN for GoW Ragnorok and Horrizon on steam, while I do get your point on it being complete BS requirments for a singleplayer game these are SONY IP so just cause they are ported on steam doesnt mean that its like not a sony made game. Sony own these IP and hence it makes a TINY bit of seance to require their network account to play them. Now do I think this is 100% a dumb move? yes I do I really think its a dumb move, but at the end of the day thats why I own a Playstation to play the console exclusives as little as there are nowadays. Would I one day just ditch consoles and go just PC gaming? thinking hard on it. But my point is I totally agree that is a BS move
Might want to actually "Add to cart", and check. I tried it, and once in the cart it automatically adds the "Bundle", which includes the upgrade (and the PSN requirement). Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't get it to work.
343 already tried to reinvent the wheel with Halo and failed, belligerently so. They were so against getting any advice or inspiration from Bungie themselves, so there's no way they're going to accurately reinvent the wheel a second time
Not from what I see, I can only add the "Bundle" to the cart, which includes the game and upgrade, and also the PSN requirement. No option exists to JUST add the original.
Some dev/publisher can get some major good PR by patenting their specific flavor of genre and making it free to use. Simply to prevent others from patenting it.
If Bethesda had said it was a test and pitched horse armor as a sort of paid beta test with a reward, there probably would have been less kickback. Free would have been best, but just being open about testing potential new content delivery would have gone a long way haha
Sony also fully took out the option to redeem $5/$20 giftcards from the rewards page, so the only things you can get are specific in game currencies. Only problem is, I bought a 15k VC pack with my rewards points 2 weeks ago and it still hasn't landed in my game. They change the rewards so you can't earn points, and then take out the only reward people actually want. Sony's actually the worst I promise I don't wanna buy an NFT with my points
I grew up on the original consoles .... Atari 2600, Intellivision, ColecoVision, Nes ...... My first Computers were an Atari ST and a Commodore 64. Unfortunately I have a PS4 (Darth Vader Version), Xb0ne, and switch with a huge game libraries that I simply have never ever played. As a PC Gamer I have just never felt the need or desire to play on one of my Consoles over one of my PCs specially the one with VR. I think I have the consoles just to keep the wife and kids off of my gaming PCs.
Yes, Falcon, I downloaded mp3s off IRC in the 90s to. These days everyone is on Facebook. Nobody knows what IRC is. I used to run eggdrop on IRC, it's what got me into Linux.
Speaking of Palworld, I don't know how long ago this was, but I heard the creatures (I don't know what they are called because I have not played the game) can get freaky with each other, if you know what I mean
The problem is that games also have become ridiculously expensive. 70 bucks for a new game that you can beat in 10-20 hours isnt that impressive. You really need a replayability concept that gives players a reason to keep playing, even if you aren't making more money on it. But the AAA games that have done well have bucked the model of microtransactions and the games are doing it big time. Stellar Blade and Wukong have clearly bucked this trend and made millions. Hopefully other studios and publishers find this a worthwhile goal to make meaningful and lasting games that aren't Fortnite.
The idea that "being in first place makes you stop being cool" is something that has long been noticed, and the concept is perhaps best encapsulated by the word "enshittification" (look it up). Basically, Coolness + Success = Crap, and all good things will inevitably turn to shit. Which, when you think about it, is maybe why a better title for today's video might be "10 horrible things big gaming companies have done recently". I mean, I used to really look forward to these monthly weird gaming stories, but this was just depressing. (Sigh.) Enshittification... It's everywhere.
The crazy thing is that i don’t understand how they don’t understand that good, fun, well-made games sell & ppl will continuously put money into those games. So to not care if a game is good or fun is defeating their purpose ultimately.
I love how he doesn’t mention in order to be a PC gamer these days your going to spend a minimum of $2000 to get a rig that can run games so they look decent, but if all you want to play is retro games then yeah PC gaming is a cheaper alternative.
Well about the Halo going to Unreal, yes there’s a reason for it to have its proprietary engine Falc. Unreal gives most game this generic unreal look to them, that I particularly don’t like. I think if you’re a big AAA publisher you should have your own tools that made your products unique. Polish is Polish, at the moment I believe that the better results (not tech demos, that ain’t nothing) are being produced by Capcom’s RE engine. Everything and every style of graphics from mega man 11 to ghost and goblins resurrection, their Arcade (sprite based) stadiums compilations and the latest Resi games. Everything done in that engine is gold
It's sad to hear that more and more studios are switching to Unreal. First of all because I don't know of any other problematic engine whose games suffer from stuttering each new release. Secondly because many games will just feel the same. And for someone who doesn't like the way Unreal's rendering looks, this is sad news.
My reasons:
-Games asking for too much of my time.

Hello, Falcon!!
Hey
First they turn everything into a subscription, then they set their lawyers on the competition. Gaming really is turning into a hellscape
Lets just hope EA sports don't get any ideas from the Genre IP Story... 👹🤬🤮😮
You know you’re a full, law abiding adult when you leave the pirate life behind 😮💨
Side question: can you still jailbreak PlayStations?
I love that you didn't lose aword about dragonage
The problem is that games also have become ridiculously expensive. 70 bucks for a new game that you can beat in 10-20 hours isnt that impressive. You really need a replayability concept that gives players a reason to keep playing, even if you aren't making more money on it. But the AAA games that have done well have bucked the model of microtransactions and the games are doing it big time. Stellar Blade and Wukong have clearly bucked this trend and made millions. Hopefully other studios and publishers find this a worthwhile goal to make meaningful and lasting games that aren't Fortnite.
This seemed like the top 10 gripes of October.
These videos are the reason I look forward to the end of the month.
Happy Halloween one and all 👻
I love how he doesn’t mention in order to be a PC gamer these days your going to spend a minimum of $2000 to get a rig that can run games so they look decent, but if all you want to play is retro games then yeah PC gaming is a cheaper alternative.
$2.49 for horse armour seems like such a good deal today.
Oh dang I just played Horizon Zero Dawn for the first time last month, right before the remaster. Thank goodness I did in time o-o
Patented genre on entertainment sounds like a dystopian corporate run world.
17:10 so basically we aren't getting a new obsidian fallout then?
Because creativity get put in the back of the line while monetary takes the lead
