And major congratulations! I told myself that I would not buy and had no room for any more cookbooks….except in your case. I’ll find room for it somewhere. You’re worth it!
I'm from New Orleans and king cake is one of my favorite things because they aren't available year-round. There are so many types of fillings, icings, and doughs that people use. Cream cheese is my favorite filling. And yes, most king cakes come with a small plastic baby inside, usually hidden at the bottom so you don't eat it. Great recipe!
I'm from originally from New Orleans. I've heard about a Vietnamese bakery that makes a very popular king cake...can't remember the name. Is it really that good? I've heard rave reviews.
@@purplesidewalkchalk63 Oh yes! Dong Phuong! They are really good. Their king cakes actually dont have a hole in the middle. The plastic baby comes on top for the customer to put inside themselves.
Yes! DP’s is amazing! Also from Nola but living abroad right now and having major Mardi Gras withdrawal. Also: cream cheese is def the best filling. J always feel cheated if I don’t get me some c/c filling! So I need to figure out how to make it with that.
Thank you for this recipe! I used to live in Mobile, & yesterday being Joe Cain day, I was REALLY missing a King Cake from the local supermarket chain bakery, Rouse's. But, it costs $60 dollars for them to ship one to you! So, it took me four hours, but I made this, instead, & it turned out PERFECTLY - EXACTLY right! It even SMELLS the same! And, it wasn't nearly as difficult as I thought it was going to be. Just time consuming with all of the waiting for the dough to rise. But, good things come to those who wait!
John, as a New Orleanian, THANK YOU for not making a mockery of our beloved king cake. You nailed it. Definitely subscribed. Cant wait to see your other recipes!
Thank you for making the King Cake. Paczki is very popular in Michigan. They have a Polish suburb of Hamtramck, pronounced ham-tram-ick. My mother was Polish so I grew up enjoying all the wonderful foods. Dad was 50% Italian.
I made this today for Fat Tuesday and it turned out perfect. I chose this recipe, amongst all the many recipes, as it didn't require yolks only, sour cream, or proving the yeast. It was soft , and smelled fantastic while baking. I saw in another recipe where a lady cut the rolled cinnamon dough in half AFTER rolling up to a tube , then twisted the roll together, and I did this , it was truly beautiful. I found the purple sugar at the local Mennonite store. Thank you , and HAPPY MARDI GRAS! 💜💜💚💚💛💛
My daughter wanted to make me your Buche de Noel for my birthday but she wasn't feeling well when the time came so her wonderful husband made it. It was renamed the Son-in-Log. 🤣 He did a great job and now he follows your channel, too. (He loves making bread.)
Made for Fat Tuesday. Followed the recipe exactly. Easy to follow directions. Beautiful dough after raising in Instant Pot. Perfect amount of filling. Everyone went back for seconds. Thanks for a delicious recipe John!!
Nice to see such a faithful recipe! I'm a Louisiana native and I constantly see King cake recipes that are basically jelly doughnuts with sprinkles. (I do have to say that bavarian cream filled king cakes are delicious tho)
It looks perfect! You’re the best! Your recipes helped me a lot when I was taking care of my mom, who recently was diagnosed with chronic leukemia. She was not being able to eat much because of her treatment but one of the things she wouldn’t turn dow were your pancakes. I was making them for her breakfast almost every week then 🥰 - 🙏🏻 thank you for all you do 😘
It is 11:37pm on 2/28/22 and I just baked two of these King Cakes. One is for work and the other for home. Well there is only 1/2 of the home one left. The work one is being eyed but remains untouched 🤣. It smelled so good we couldn't resist a taste. Thank you for this recipe. I am going to enjoy playing around with the different variations. The dough is beautiful and the texture devine.
Thank you! Your comment persuaded me to try this recipe out of the many I looked at this year. This was the 12th King Cake I've ever made, and I almost always enjoy the fun of the cake, but don't like eating it because it's usually ridiculously dry and hard. This recipe did not have that problem at all! It was moist, and a co-worker said it instantly reminded her of her favorite cinnamon rolls.
I am from New Orleans and we do it a tad differently as far as tradition. There is a small plastic baby put into the cake (through the bottom) and whoever gets the baby in their piece gets the next king cake. But it is so amazing!! The filled ones are even better! Three of my favorites are cream cheese filled, Bavarian cream, and praline 🤤🤤🤤. This makes me miss home 🥰
I remember about this cake from French class in high school. Madame said no to the little king inside of the cake, so instead, she recommended using an almond or some other lil nut! how cute~
Hi !! Preppy Kitchen Happy 😊 Tuesday evening. The king 🤴 cake looks delicious 😋 love the colors. Congratulations on you're cook book. You are such a awesome baker . I like the way you bake. I hope you had a wonderful 💗 Valentines Day 💝 good night 😴
This loks as good as the king Cakes we bought in the south of france every year! I was just telling my husband it's too bad they don't have them in this part of Italy! i guess now i can make my own!
My dough didn't look like it was rising but I still decided to proceed with the recipe and this came out much larger than I thought but was so delicious, soft and sweet. Everyone loved it!
When I get a notification that you have uploeded a video, my happy time begins 📸❣️🍊♥️🥳🧁🎊🎉🥳💖🫂❤️🍨🪄👑🥰💕 When I watch your videos I feel comfortable and happy 🥳🎊♥️ I wish to see you always and wish you a happy life my best friend🫂🥰♥️💖🧁🍡❤️🥰😍😘🍭🌸💖💕🧁
I used to work for a French company. At new year we had a king cake, and I got to be king for a day. The cake we had was made of puff pastry with frangipane filling, and I didn't know until now that there's also a bread version.
The traditional king cake in New Orleans is a brioche base. Not sure when it changed from the original french recipe. I only know of one bakery that makes a traditional French version and they charge a fortune for it.
My family loves king cake but they are a once a year thing. I am not great with pastry but it's a bucket list item for me to learn how to make them. I have watched about 10 other videos some were from famous chefs. I have not liked any of their results. Your is my favorite. Yours is beautiful and you really simplified the process. Soon you and I are going to bake.☺💜💛💚
Definitely going to try this. I made this cake before but it was a different recipe from a different book and it came out to be a flop. The dough was separated by three separate pieces and then all of them put together so I'm going to definitely try this and see what happens. Thanks so much John I love your recipes I hope I'm able to get your book later. Keep on cooking
Hi preppy kitchen! I just wanted to say that I am from Norway 🇳🇴 and I would love if you made skolebrød if is so good and I would love if you would make it!
I just made chai tea cookies! I just added 1 scoop of instant chai tea mix and 1 tea bag of chai tea to my favorite shortbread recipe and it came out great.
Very nice and delicious 😋 recipe. I will definitely try it. Can you please make corn 🌽 yogurt muffins. I always enjoy it during my break and would love to know how to make it 😌 🙂 😊. Thank you 💖

We just placed our Pre-Order. Exciting times! Does it come with an audio reel ? Just kidding. But I do love the Audio on your videos - for real.
I per order ur book I can’t wait cook with it
how do you make the dough without the dough hook? can you make it by kneading it for half an hour? lol

They still put the baby in the cake?!

Rouses actually does king cakes year round. Most of the time at least.

Hey John. It's so refreshing to see you bake and normalise being messy in the kitchen. It removes my anxiety of being a messy baker in my kitchen.

I worked in a Middle School and every year the Spanish Teacher had the her students make this. It is so delicious.
John, that is the most gorgeous King’s Cake I’ve ever seen! It looks delish and you decorated it beautifully!❤️👑🍰❤️
It’s really nice to see something from Louisiana/French culture in one of your videos :)))
This looks so great John. I made your crinkle cookies a few months back and they have been my go-to recipe ever since!

Being a Louisianian and working in a bakery, I love king cake, but OMG King cake season BLOWS.
I haven't had a King Cake since I left NOLA (Mandeville) 6 years ago. I'm going to make this one this weekend. Can't wait!
Follow up; Success! Tasty, not the prettiest, but it was yummy.

Hi John! I made your zebra cake with chocolate cream cheese frosting for Valentines Day and it was a HIT!!! Love your recipes😊
How did you know I was wishing for this recipe? You're a mind reader as well as a talented teacher, cook and dad.

I had no idea a King's Cake was basically cinnamon rolls in a wreath shape. So much easier than I was expecting!
Neither have I. My family in New 0rleans would always ship us their homemade King Cake to us during this time.❤️ 🍰

That’s so cool! What bakery is your favorite king cake from? I’d love to check it out
I remember about this cake from French class in high school. Madame said no to the little king inside of the cake, so instead, she recommended using an almond or some other lil nut! how cute~

Are you able to store the dough in the fridge in between the step where it rises for an hour in the bowl and when you roll it out?
This looks interesting. I think I should have a go.
Im going to try this because its so easy and colorful! Can you make italian peach cookies? They are kind of like macarons.
