  • Had a problem with my truck last week that caused the check engine light to come on. I explain what happened, how I fixed it, then show how I reset the light.

I really like your truck! If I was able to see that's exactly what I'd drive!

The most common problem I see on these trucks when somebody does a cap and rotor they pinch the pick up wire between the cap and distributor have to be careful with that😊 and yes, I have a 94 Dodge ram same thing. Well it’s a 318 same engine though.

I've done the cap and rotor twice on this truck. It's a gigantic PITA because you can only do it by feel. Hopefully I won't have to do it again for a long time.

Ah, back when engines were simple. Misfire? It's in the ignition system not some other EPA BS that's making it run that way. Sure, accessibility wasn't good, but it's done and good for many more miles.

Yes accessibility sucks. There is almost not enough space to get a new distributor cap back there at all. It took a while and many failed attempts to figure that out. Once I finally did get it back there the rest was fairly easy except for not being able to see anything and doing the whole job by feel. Still at least you can see there is an engine when you open the hood unlike most modern vehicles where you open the hood to a giant plastic shroud that hides everything.

I get those all the time, I simply ignore it unless it's red or flashing.

I'm surprised I haven't seen this yet. Let me tell you (and I can speak on this because I live in Michigan), you have BALLS to only have 2wd cars. And a Mustang, at that. I only like 4wd pickups, specifically for the 3 days a year I need it. Fwd is fine, most cars have it. I wish I could get a rwd car for my first, like a Caprice or a Roadmaster, but I keep going away from it, because they are rwd. Plus, all of the ones around here (and the Panther body Fords) have 34" chrome rims, and "systems"...

RWD isn't a problem , even in snow if you equip the car right. That means ditching the "All Season" tires in winter for actual snow tires on all four wheels. My Mustang is the best car I've ever had in snow provided it has snow tires. When I first bought it it was late November or early December and it only had all season tires. The first time it snowed a couple inches I almost couldn't go anywhere. It really sucked in the snow. But I went out the next day and bought a full set of snows and what a difference. This past December we had a big snowstorm in December and I had to get to work in the morning. I drove 5 miles in 12" of unplowed snow by just keeping in the tire ruts made by others before me so I wasn't blazing a new trail. I don't think I exceeded 25 mph all the way there but I made it on time with no issues. Never got stuck. People drove for decades before the 1980s in winter with RWD because that all there was and got where they were going. Most people back then had tire chains for really bad weather.
I used to see those vintage RWD cars with 34" rims etc in FL all the time. Nothing like a mid 70s Cadillac Sedan de Ville with huge rims painted some ugly metallic purple or day glow green. Around here if you had those kind of rims you'd be out 1000's of dollars the first pothole you hit . I think they look stupid but it's a free country and they can look stupid if they want too.

I've heard that, that's why my grandfather told me. My dad sort of "scared" me away from rwd, since he had, about 14 years ago, a 1986 BMW 535i, which was rwd. He had it when I was born, and he always talked about not being able to get up the driveway with it. Whether it had snow tires, I don't know.
I don't get why people do that. It looks horrible. I was out driving around a few weeks ago, and passed a gas station, and there was a mint looking 80's Monte Carlo, complete with like 93" chrome rims. It was hideous. Not that I mind the rims, I can take them off, but you don't know who did the work with those, they may have screwed something major up.

Has this truck or your Mustang ever left you stranded and what is the Stang's mileage?

    • @tallboyyyy

Never been stranded with either vehicle. The Mustang is a 2012 and has approx 140K. I bought it with 40K and it's made at least 6 round trips between NH and FL.

Flashing check engine light? Damaging catalyst, check your fuel quality. Stop topping off with your heads from the still.

Problem was it was running on 6 or 7 cylinders due to a bad cap and rotor. The contacts inside the cap were pretty bad. Once changed it's been running perfect for the last year. Check engine light has stayed off. The truck had been driven less than 5 miles with the check engine light on so I doubt any real damage was done.
