  • Just a quick video showing how I found a large evap system leak on a 1999 Dodge RAM 1500 v6 Magnum with error codes PO443 and PO455. (Not the Gas cap)
    The Check Engine Light would turn on after a short drive after the owner had cleared the codes. The codes were not present when I did this repair because the battery had died right before he brought the truck to me.
    The owner had also already replaced the gas cap.
    I had carefully looked at each hose in the diagram shown in the video to make sure there were no splits or cracks and made sure that they were all connected.
    You will see in the video where I found the leak just above the charcoal canister.
    It wasn't necessary to take down the entire canister bracket/assembly, but it made it a lot easier to show/film the repair. I was unable to find the small 3-way rubber piece of that evap harness. I did find the entire harness listed, but it was shown as discontinued so I made it work with some 5/16" hoses and a plastic T fitting.

    It's been a week since I fixed this, and the Check Engine Light has not come back. The owner just checked and there are no codes pending and all of the monitors and tests are complete. It is now ready for California Smog test.
    Thanks for watching!

    I recently ran into this same problem with the small rubber fitting but instead of replacing it with Tee fittings shown in the video I chose another remedy. Originally I was going to use RTV gasket sealer and recoat that fitting to reinforce it and make it stronger but didn't have any on hand so instead I chose to use some epoxy I have that was really thick with the viscosity of like wheel bearing grease. I mixed it up and then use a small paint brush to paint it around the fitting. I also glued the fitting to the canister. Overall this repair worked quite well for me. I cleaned the fitting with soap and water prior to the recoating so I had good adhesion. Just thought I would share my idea so others can chose which direction they want to fix this problem. This video was helpful.

    What is it about Guys named Dan that just think sooo far “outside of the box”? I love it when people like Dan can adapt things like this that would leave so many others (like me) just crippled. Thank you for your brilliant video!!!

    Thanks for the video. I've got a 1999 Ram Van 1500...V-6 engine....I'm fighting the same issues for the calif SMOG test...that goofy angle rubber thing is rotten to the core...everything else on the whole system seems fine...only 2 electrical 'sensors/ components' in the whole SMOG system...Vapor 'Pump' and purge valve...I replaced both to no avail...the 'Canister is about the same as this one...under the drivers side...
    I'm getting the 0455 code...I bought a smoke machine...connected it at the purge valve line...smoke comes out the larger line from the cannister at the larger 'Pump' line... so I guess it's working...pretty wimpy amount of smoke/pressure...no smoke seen at the purge canister despite the poor condition of that right angle rubber fitting.
    Nothing going to the gas tank except one of those 1/4-5/16" hard plastic lines, goes to the right angle rubber thing....no pressure sensor ..just 4 wires for gas pump and gauge...
    I'm a DIY'er...only got the crappy Haynes manual...little to no info on anything later than 1988...even though the Cover says...up to 2005...

    Mine has to have the same problem..... Advantage I have is my 2 parts trucks never had check engine lights for this problem..... Maybe that one piece is still useable on one of the other trucks I have. Still a better idea to put brand new hoses on it even if it's gotta be diy these days since they keep discontinuing parts.

    evap purge solenoid circuit P0443. Replaced the solenoid. Preformed function test while plugged in it clicks/works. Checked evap connector has power. Solenoid works during test both oem and new aftermarket during function test. Preformed leak test can only see smoke coming out of the breather hose cap coming from canister. Is that normal for it to come out of the breather cap. 99 dodge 1500 5.9. Any suggestions would help me out a ton. Appreciate your time

    • @DantheFixitMan
      @DantheFixitMan  Год назад

      I am not sure on that, but I would continue with the smoke testing and see if you have any other leaks down underneath near the canister. It was very hard to find the one that I had down there…
      Best of luck to you. I hope you get it figured out. Please keep us posted.

    I have a 01 Dakota with a P0442 and P0445 engine code. Investigation showed that there is a small tube going from the evap can to somewhere around the gas tank. At some point something hit the outlet on the evap can and broke it off. I've ordered a new evap can and the tube. Any insight on how to replace the tube to the gas tank? Thanks for your video.

    • @DantheFixitMan
      @DantheFixitMan  8 месяцев назад +1

      I am not sure on the Dakota, but you might have to drop the tank down or put a camera up there to see where it connects and/or if it also had a nipple that broke off. There might be a video or diagram you can find online...
      I recently fixed an evap issue with a jeep wrangler that had a cracked evap vent tube on the rollover valve (on top of the gas tank) with some epoxy and a vacuum fitting. Worked great. Here's a link to that video: ruclips.net/video/B8QqFEJeQG8/видео.html
