My 2000 Dakota 4.7 recently started with the P0455 code. I began researching yesterday and found a lot of next to useless posts. Yours is, by far, the most helpful. Thank you.
You're certainly right about organization. The only difference between junk and spare parts is being able to find something when you need it. Great video, Brian! I was kinda looking forward to one of your famous blackboard talks, but your message was clear without going there.
Thanks man, for this video. The technique you used to isolate the leak front versus rear is exactly how I solved my problem. I had never traced those vac lines before, and when I was able to determine that the leak was coming from the rear end, I could concentrate my efforts there. I know it's simple, but it was HUGE for me. The only thing I did different was rather than use plugs and bolts to plug the lines for testing, I crimped them with needle nose vice grips that had fuel line on the tips, then used my hand vac pump. But dude, this video helped me isolate my problem and the CEL that's been on for two years on my '02 Jeep WJ, is now OFF! (bows) Thanks again man.
Let me just say that I have watched a lot of videos on troubleshooting evap systems because they are complicated and the couple of videos you have made on the subject showed me more valuable information than the rest on you tube...thanks to you I figured out that my purge solenoid was good but the vacuum lines were backwards. Fixed the problem.. thanks so much.
Great vid. I always see the smoke machines to do that never thought to do a vacuum test. Great vid. Between you and sixty five ford I've spent a lot of time catching up on older videos! Thanks for spending your time and energy into spreading your knowledge
I can't aid afford a smoke machine. Seeing you use a a tool I already have so encouraged me on how to find that leak! Just pump some vacuum and see if it leaks. I've watched tons of EVAP videos and I've learned something from everyone, but that was two of the final clues. The second being, put vacuum on the vent and see it drop the vacuum when activated. So simple! I usually avoid !!, but I got excited. :)
Thanks Brian, so many places for these components to leak or malfunction ... yet we're stuck with these systems and the "Money Light" as many mechanics call them ... your Videos help break the diagnosis down to understandable steps ... I've also learned to really check connections closely when ever there are electrical related codes ... I've seen connector that were not locked yet performed for 10 years only to get bumped and cause a bad connection ... while working on something else under the hood ..
Good job of diagnosing an EVAP system liked the way you explained doing the tests on one hose or component at a time to help us understand it is important to narrow down the search to pinpoint the problem, also liked your advice on cleaning and lubing the gas cap.
Brian- On my 03 Ram, my evap problem was that I was filling my gas tank too full. It would overflow into the charcoal canisters (2 canister setup) and solidify the charcoal. I red-necked a bladed screwdriver end on my electric drill to loosen up the solid charcoal. That fixed it forever.
Couldn't have had a better candidate to shoot the video on. I too have an 02 Dakota and get the P0455 all the time. Mostly its the gas cap (which has been replaced 3 times with OEM ones and I finally gave up and just bought the cheap $5 ones every once in a while). I have had to replace the hoses by the charcoal canister too. Thanks Brian!
Learned new simple stuff as usual from watching your videos. thanks for the upload ! I would have put an O ring just to be safe on that hose. I noticed that the vacuum hoses expand from the heat or oil with the time and become loose... the other thing is I can't count how many times where that mityvac pump saved my life...I use it in everything , especially to bleed the brakes!
Thank you for this video. We tried foxing this entire system on a jetta recently but qhen we were going to buy all the parts since everything was cracked from him overfilling his tank, and the purge silinoid was done too, we decided to just sell tbe car. Disclose the info and get of off our hands. The seller was fine fixing it and we didnt have to dump money into a car we were gonna sell anyways. But at least this made me sure we diagnoaed it right and made the right decition
On a dodge ram of the same vintage, the charcoal canister has gone bad and it has sucked up a bunch of the charcoal up into the purge valve. Have you see this happen often?
Nice, I appreciate your time and effort on this issue. Well done. I know what kind of device you are using to pump the hoses up lol. But good job on your effort
Thanks- it makes a huge difference in being able to knock a job out quicker. I used to go to college full time and work two jobs (when I started the organize push) I didn't have any time to spare digging through spares. So I got organized.
Helpful video. I'm dealing with an evap leak on my cousin's car now and I just can't find it and I don't have a smoke machine. The only thing I've found is that purge valve you tested. On the Corolla I'm working on it doesn't hold vacuum but it opens and closes when I test it. But it's not a cheap part and I'm not 100% sure that's the problem. The codes are p0441 and p0455. I hate dealing with evap systems, so much testing involved and you're never sure if you've fixed it right away if there isn't direct evidence.
This was great to watch in action your proccess of elimination! I like the way you move through the steps AND especially your philosophy of save it for another day! You organize the saved stuff which makes all the difference AND it looks like you KEEP it organized! ( I'm working on that) just a search for P0422 brought me here. Did I hear you say P0442 rather than P0422? The you tube says P0422
If only you could do a video on the EGR system on a 96 legacy i could figure mine out. Lol Ive pretty much given up at this point. I love watching your videos though! Very informative!
Hi Brian thank you for the videos they are a lot of help. I have the same 2 codes and I changed like everything but I don't have a smoker or a vacuum pump is the any advice you can help me with!!! 07 Chevy cobalt
I have a 98 dodge dakota v6 & when I took my charcoal canister off & left the hoses just hanging & my truck started up better & had no misfire> When i put my new one in my truck went back to having a problem starting & misfires. Can I just leave the hoses off the charcoal canister off? Please lmk what to do
I was looking for the 443 code. But I enjoyed your video, and have another reason to get a vacuum tester. Do you want to borrow my pressure washer for the "entire" engine compartment....
What is the tool you used to power the purge solenoid? I have to diagnose a vapour pressure problem on my Celica , when filling up it cuts the fuel pump off so I have just pull it out a bit so the gases can escape lol
Great video like always i will try this test need help fill my gas tank and next time i turn it on the light came on with the codes p0441 p0450 and p0452 any direction thanks in advance
Hi Brian can I install a T connection between the canister purge solenoid and the intake (vacuum line). I would like to install add smoke with the T connection and test for leaks while the truck park in idle. Just wondering for any problems doing besides the safety issues. Thanks
Brian, I have an Accord Honda from 1996, today both ligths, SRS and ABS turn on on the dash. The car havent been use for several months, just crank it every 10 days and let engine run several minutes to keep battery charged. Cant stand why get two ligths from two different systems at the very same time. As a matter of fact, horn doesnt work from long time ago, asked about that, and I have been told that some sort of wiring in the steering wheel worn out or damaged. Just wondering if this could be now an issue for drivers airbag also causing SRS ligt come on. Still dont undertand the ABS light. The light tunerd on steady, not flashing, not beeping. Car still brakes fine. Many thanks in advance.
i have a 2009 mercedes benz s550 motor 5.5L, when the pcm does the test leak by it self, after closing the vent solenoid. do you know for how much time ( in seconds ) does the purge solenoid stays open during the vacuum on the evap system???
I got a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 so I got a engine light for o2 sensor lower so I swap it ok so I change it it came back again for same o2 sensor but now I also got a code for purge valve I got the purge valve I noticed that charcoal came out the purge valve hose so I decided to check canister the canister is no good can that make my o2 sensor go of also pls help ?
I know this is an older video, but very informative! Can anyone tell me what the part is that is right next to the battery under the purge solenoid that you can clearly see right at 3:10, the round part with the 4 slits going around the top of it. I have a 2003 Durango with this set up and have been trying to figure out what that part is. Does it have a vacuum line attached to the bottom of it? Have been chasing a small leaf for weeks.
Sometimes a cable tie or a small hose clamp is all what you need... just to make those rubber hose connections more "snag"... If everytime this happens you cut a little piece of rubber hose... you will eventually not have a hose anymore...
I have a thicker hose that goes towards the front but it's not connected to nothing. Can someone help!!!!! "It's next to the vacume hose that goes to the purge"
I have a 2003 liberty sport and when I put gas in it before it fills up gas over flows what seems to be out the top of the gas tank, is this a evap leak detectorproblem ????? please help me I'm stuck.???
Mark Boza was the car rear ended? I had a Volvo that was hit on the gas filler sideand "repaired" before I bought it. Turns out the filler neck was replaced and the flex hose to the tank wasnt and the flex tube would allow gas to overflow out the top of the tank. Your problem might be similar or it may be the tank pressure valve isnt releasing air pressure in the tank to the charcoal canister while you fill up.
no the car was never in a accident, I don't know why but when I put fuel in and it gets to full it over flows out the top of the tank, I believe it is the sending unit inside the tank ,my gas gauge don't work either so I do my best to do the mileage thing but sometimes I lose track when I ffuel up and it overflows, I'm not replacing the fuel pump until it needs iit, it can leak till the cows come home.
Your're a natual teacher. You keep it moving and keep it interesting! Well Done! Thanks! Reno, NV
Making quality vids is not easy. Thanks for the time and energy you put into what you do. It is appreciated.
I LOVE hearing that! Thanks!

My 2000 Dakota 4.7 recently started with the P0455 code. I began researching yesterday and found a lot of next to useless posts. Yours is, by far, the most helpful. Thank you.
BTW, the same hose going to the Schrader valve apparently was the culprit.
You're certainly right about organization. The only difference between junk and spare parts is being able to find something when you need it. Great video, Brian! I was kinda looking forward to one of your famous blackboard talks, but your message was clear without going there.

Finally! I feel like I'm in the garage getting a real mechanic lesson on troubleshooting the evap in my 03. Thanks for the great vid!
I guess I am kinda off topic but does anyone know a good website to stream new movies online ?
@Dean Aaron flixportal xD
@Wilson Onyx Thanks, I signed up and it seems to work :D I appreciate it!!
@Dean Aaron No problem xD

Great work at finding the problem spot brian. I wish I had even a quarter of your knowledge
Keep watching like you have and you'll have more than that!
Great video bud, it really helped me to tackle the evap with more confidence. Thank you so much!
I'm need help 😫
Thank you for posting this video. It gives people, who don't have a smoke machine, a way to find leaks in their evep. system.
Thank you, no one's ever told me about that turning ignition key to get the codes thank you, and that is really a cool option by

There it is! It's even blue! Welcome Kyle!

I have a dodge 5.2 just like this one. I e been looking for this video. Thank you, this helps me sooo much. 👍
Aloha buddy. Thanks for pointers and taking the time to share. It will definitely keep me from goijg down the wrong road.
Thank you! You have enlightened me on many questions. Thanks for putting time and energy into this video... feel as though I owe a fee.
Thanks for teaching us personally I appreciate it god bless you always
that was cool of dodge to show the codes i hope more cars get the idea of easy fixing

Nice, I appreciate your time and effort on this issue. Well done. I know what kind of device you are using to pump the hoses up lol. But good job on your effort
Very helpful, please make another video about vent valve which connect I think to charcoal canister. Thanks so much, May God Bless You.
I like how organized all your "stuff" is.
Thanks- it makes a huge difference in being able to knock a job out quicker. I used to go to college full time and work two jobs (when I started the organize push) I didn't have any time to spare digging through spares. So I got organized.
Fault codes displayed on dash should be the LAW!!
Great upload. All the best Brian
Holy baby Jesus.
This video by far the best description on my troubles
You rock dude! Fixed my wife's car using your methods .
Im no longer throwing away Vacuum plugs. I have the same errors on my 2002 dodge Dakota. Going to try your suggestions.
Good work Brian! Great video! You rock! Proof that at least one human is worth saving! Love you brother! Truth, Real News, never grows old. Christ

Thanks for the instruction. There is a "Mobil 1" repair truck in Trenton Florida that does house calls. I dont suppose that is you though.
good video tyler im 45 and you way ahead of me
Good stuff.
Happy Motoring.
Very helpful Thanx. I am learning now for the hobby of it. Old car Mechanic resurrects.
Thanks for the video. My 99 jeep Cherokee is throwing the same codes. I now have a weekend project. :-)
This was great to watch in action your proccess of elimination! I like the way you move through the steps AND especially your philosophy of save it for another day! The you tube says P0422
If you get some extra time would you mind showing us how to test a 2002 Focus purge valve? I would appreciate it, thanks!
My car has had these codes set for a while.. i have that new capless filler and it keeps failing to seal
If only you could do a video on the EGR system on a 96 legacy i could figure mine out. Lol Ive pretty much given up at this point. I love watching your videos though! Very informative!
Nice video! will be buying that tool
Very very good explanation.
Great walk thru. Appreciate it.
Wow I learned so much on this video Thanks :)
Hi Brian thank you for the videos they are a lot of help. I have the same 2 codes and I changed like everything but I don't have a smoker or a vacuum pump is the any advice you can help me with!!! 07 Chevy cobalt

Much appreciated, thank you Brian.
Are you kidding? Thank YOU for your comments- watching them- and your support! Always great to see you!
Very clear explanation, than you so much it help a lot
I was looking for the 443 code. But I enjoyed your video, and have another reason to get a vacuum tester. Do you want to borrow my pressure washer for the "entire" engine compartment....
Very thorough! Much thanks, I hope I can duplicate your efforts.
What is the tool you used to power the purge solenoid? I have to diagnose a vapour pressure problem on my Celica , when filling up it cuts the fuel pump off so I have just pull it out a bit so the gases can escape lol
Do you know where the solenoid valve is on a 2011 f-350?
Great video like always i will try this test need help fill my gas tank and next time i turn it on the light came on with the codes p0441 p0450 and p0452 any direction thanks in advance
Awesome 👍 I recently got these codes
Hi Brian can I install a T connection between the canister purge solenoid and the intake (vacuum line). I would like to install add smoke with the T connection and test for leaks while the truck park in idle. Just wondering for any problems doing besides the safety issues. Thanks

Great video Brian well done.
as always.... great video... thanks Brian!!
Very informative, thanks Brian!
maybe some sort of tapered rubber or plastic plug to fit a range of hose sizes
So you can use this vacum pump to find the leak as opposed to the smoke test?
i have a 2009 mercedes benz s550 motor 5.5L, when the pcm does the test leak by it self, after closing the vent solenoid. do you know for how much time ( in seconds ) does the purge solenoid stays open during the vacuum on the evap system???
I got a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 so I got a engine light for o2 sensor lower so I swap it ok so I change it it came back again for same o2 sensor but now I also got a code for purge valve
I got the purge valve I noticed that charcoal came out the purge valve hose so I decided to check canister the canister is no good can that make my o2 sensor go of also pls help ?
cool code showing...nice to have for sure
brian i have a 2005 dodge durango trying to find out how you hook up your hoses to the vapor canister .any ideal please thank you peace out
I too find that locking your car by remote multiple times helps any project.
Like ur videos man.. wish I had ur setup..
@13:42 whats the name of that hose and what size is it .
Will the silicone on the gas cap gasket not end up poisoning the O2 sensors?
Did any of the codes clear up after what you did?
Good video Brian thanks
That hand pump you're using, is that a brake bleeder pump?
you can't thank a guy enough who wants to teach you something
I know this is an older video, but very informative! Supposed to be a filter. Also, part no longer available I've discovered.
My 2000 grand cherokee has that 3x key cycle thing also
so wheres the evap leak? I mean good informative video, but did you ever find the leak
???
Sometimes a cable tie or a small hose clamp is all what you need... just to make those rubber hose connections more "snag"...
If everytime this happens you cut a little piece of rubber hose... you will eventually not have a hose anymore...
Excelent vid, now when or if i get a code on my 04, i have some info :)
BLUES BROTHERS!!! I LOVE that movie! Especially the police car pile up!
One of the great ones
What was the conclusion? Did it work? Was it that T- Service connection tube you cut? You didn't finished the job in this video. ??
yes, the pump he is using is a mityvac
I have a 2003 Dodge Neon, 2.0 engine. Code P0442 EVAP system small leak (0.040") any suggestions where to check?
What was the type and size of the hoses on your Evap box, I think the ones on my 2K Dakota are cracked?
is the purge valve suppose to his of and on i hear air
What if you dont have a digital odmeter
excellent trouble shooting...awesome
I have a thicker hose that goes towards the front but it's not connected to nothing. Can someone help!!!!! "It's next to the vacume hose that goes to the purge"
Soooo it was the rust under the gas cap on the filler-neck? You never said if it fixed the problem then the video just ended...
Great knowledge here
what is a P0456? large leak or small leak?
do u guys think thats the problem on my car cause it turns off by itself after o put gas
My engine light is not comin g on But when I test it the code came up p4055 car is driving rough
If those two lines are not on all the way witll that throw the code?
does that work with 99 ram?
What about the filler neck?
I didn’t see you check the gas tank vent solenoid or vent hose
I have a 2003 liberty sport and when I put gas in it before it fills up gas over flows what seems to be out the top of the gas tank, is this a evap leak detectorproblem ????? please help me I'm stuck.???
