@Scottykilmer I've been scrunching my head for a while now why haven't you made any car videos on Ford vehicles?
Buffoonery, Chrysler had 25 billion dollars in the bank when Daimler approached Chrysler. DAIMLER needed Chrysler for it's recourses because Mercedes Benz was losing billions to Lexus, BMW and Acura in the 90s. Chrysler didn't need Daimler, it was the other way around, do your research.
@@happyjohn8256 after looting the company of it's recourses, Yes, Daimler looted the hell out of Chrysler of it's cash and assets and then sold the company after Daimler got back on it's feet. Where have you been?
@@happyjohn8256 stop it, it was a 36 billion dollar MERGER. Daimler later used it's extra assets and it's earlybird access to the stock markets in Europe to takeover Chrysler. Chrysler was the most powerful car company in the late 90s, that's why Daimler came knocking on the door. After LOOTING Chrysler of it's vital assets, it ended up being a shell of it's own self, that's why they sold 80% of the company to Cerberus and tried to keep the other 20% to themselves. Barack Obama forced Daimler to give up that 20% and forced Chrysler's CEO out. Obama loaned Chrysler 12 billion dollars to fix itself on the condition that Chrysler would allow itself to be bought by a trash company called Fiat. So yes, Chrysler's cash flow saved Daimler and it's currently saving two more European car companies Peugeot and Fiat ( considering the fact that Chrysler makes 65% of the groups profit).
@Scotty Kilmer Just do a Chevy LS swap on truck problems solved🤷
I owned a 2006 5.7 Ram 1500 and got 260k out of its original engine and transmission. It was the best truck I’ve ever driven. Most of my friends and family hated me for driving a Dodge but I was the first one they’d call for help when there car broke down😊
Yup me too had a 4x4 5.7 16 crew great truck. Moved way south traded it. Since bought a 22 crew w slow 3.6 but 3.55 rearend makes it ok for take off.
😂. Only 260k, you've never owned a Vortec, they're only broken in at 260k.
Best time to say “I told you so”
@@DG-sf9ei The problem is the Chevy 5.3 Vortec was a great motor, just everything surrounding it was crap.
@derekheuring2984 Displacement on demand AFM really shot that motor in the foot. I still wanna buy an LBZ or an LLY. But I'll settle for a nice LQ9 Vortec 6.0 because it is mated to the 4L80. 5.3 still a good motor. 4L60...meh
These older, mid-2000's Dodge Ram 1500's with the 5.7 L HEMI V8 engine and the five-speed automatic transmission are still running strong and driving pretty good as of today. There is no need to buy a newer used vehicle. Thank you very much.
I have a 94 with the 5.9 magnum still trucking along.
@@John-209 99’ with 5.9
Exactly the old ones king the old Cummins are even better than the V8 nd commonly see over 500k miles
@@joveleta Agreed
My 05 has nearly 300k and still going strong!
I worked as a toolmaker for Newark Assy. for Chrysler Corp. from 93 to 09 when the plant closed.Chrysler never needed Daimler Benz. The company was doing fine with 8 billion in cash reserve at the time of the "takeover" When Daimler took over they took away as many improvements that had been made on the vehicle as they could get away with. For just a few examples they eliminated some inspection on the final line ,did away with the color coordinated running boards, eliminated reinforcement brackets in the under-body and also did away with the shipping tape? that you normally only see on expensive vehicles. They actually cheapened the Dodge Durango. I was there.
They also created a car like the Pacifica and the little one like the Neon
The Daimler CEO called it "a merger of equals." It didn't take long for the bloom to fall from the rose. Chrysler was making all the money, and Daimler was trying to keep their head above water because they were getting clobbered by Lexus & BMW. Chrysler got royally screwed and never recovered.
Chrysler cooked the books and hid billions in R & D costs. When M/ B found out, they fired 17 floors of execs that lied.
Scotty often has his own version of the real world. I was a MSF Motorcycle Safety Instructor for around 20 years and listened to his EXPERT review of motorcycle items. I guess MSF should have not bothered and simply contacted him, so much for the Hurt Report and actual accident analysis. Have an older Dodge with a 4.7 and it has over 175k miles and yes I had to fix it myself. Turns out simply the mile-long cam chain system wore out enough to require attention and a few small electrical issues, it runs like a clock. I would have selected that Old Hemi if I could, but buying a used vehicle, you take what it has.
@@richczentorycki2540 the neon was already in production before the takeover
My 05 Ram with the 5.7 Hemi has been flawless mechanically except the usual wear and tear items. The 5 speed trans like some have stated on here has 6 gears using a 2nd prime gear for downshifting from 5th at highway speeds, it only uses 5 up shifts tho. Great truck, not the most comfortable but it's the last of the "real" trucks made, not like these 100k $ Cadillac wus trucks of today. Mine can really take a beating without skipping a beat.
I got the same year model. With close to 300k miles it has been a great truck.
I have the same at 194k ❤
I have a 2003 Ram 1500 Standard cab. It's been my daily driver since 2006. Great truck. Tough as hell. Still a lot of original stuff too at 471,000 miles.
I'm glad to hear this, pray my truck give me that much life, it's at 151,000.
@@missa1goins Just keep the oil changed and radiator / water pump in good shape and it should!
Spoken like a true car surgeon! Thank you for the info!
My daily driver is a 23 year old Dakota R/T with a 5.9 V8 and I love it.
Love to see you with the tools, Mr Scotty!
I'm the owner of an 04 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab 5.7Hemi 2wd, Bought it brand spanking new in November of 03. I'm at 300,000+ kms and she's still driving (4-5 xs per week) with no issues. With exception to the typical wear & tear components (brakes, shocks etc) I've only had to replace a fuel pump, heater core & (1) o2 sensor,.........THAT'S IT !!!!. Of course the body is rotting away (good old Toronto Canada winters, lol) but this truck is a beast and I will run this thing until she quits. Not bad for a purchase made almost 20 yrs back. Myself and 2 other friends all purchased the same truck within a matter of months back in 03/04. One of them decided to upgrade in 2010/11 with a new model Ram 1500 and it was nothing but issues for him within 4-5 months of owning the vehicle. As for the other friend with the 04? It's still going strong with 400,000kms + and minimal repairs over the years......A great all around truck with a super strong motor ;)
2007 5.7 with the MDS, but first thing I did was pick up a tuner, and disabled it. Full v8 power with pretty good economy on the 87 tune. Love the truck, love the tuner. Thanks, Scotty!!!!
I have a 2000 Dodge Magnum 360, 260,000 miles. Regular maintenance, not one problem. Change the oil and transmission at regular intervals as it says in the manual. It's getting rusty but I'd drive it anywhere. I love it.
Nice. Me too. dodge dakota magnum 360 262,000 miles
01 ram off road edition 258,000 miles. Trans was rebuilt at 120k and rear LSD was replaced with tracklock at 250k when the clutch retainers broke. Still runs strong minus dash core being brittle.
Not one problem? 4mpg is a problem.😂
Seriously though, you haven't had a problem with the intake manifold plenum leaking causing oil to burn? Maybe it was fixed before you bought it. I got 160k on my 360, really only issue I have. Want to get it fixed but if I got to tear all that down might as well put some heads, cam, and good intake manifold 😂
01 ram 1500 and not really had much big problems. My cyl 4 is misfiring now but overall thats the biggest expense i would have to spend but if im having to spend that i may as well rebuild the trans ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ shes my first vehicle and i love it
@@kdcustoms1272 Probably 9mpg lol
I have a 2000 Dodge DAKOTA (magnum 6 ) best vehicle I have ever owned ! 23 yrs later no problems!
My dad has the magnum 6 in his dakota. Strong lil engine. I HATE the front brakes it though.
Love these videos of real people's cars getting real work done on them! Thanks again Scotty!
If you haven’t noticed Scotty is old and just whipping out the code reader lol. He doesn’t actually do big maintenance like he used too.
He did wrench on this one… if you would’ve watched the video to its entirety….
@@dawsonpurkett6246 yeah I know, I was saying I like it when he "wrenches" on real cars.
Also, even though these have issues with lifters they are pretty easy to do, easier then the gm lifters imo. only thing is a lot of the dodges i see start having excessive main/rod bearing clearance and low oil pressure after 220 or so where as the gm bottom end usually make it past 260-270. same with the 5.0 motors from ford. a lot of those end up getting oil pressure issues after about 220 which is usually oil pump or lower end wear.
I had an 07 5.7 QC 4x4, 17 3.6 CC 4x4, 16 5.7 CC 4x4, and now have a 19 5.7 CC 4x4. They’ve only gotten better. Another 50hp, 60ft/lb torque, better on fuel economy thanks to the 8 speed transmission. I love dodge trucks.
My 16 CC 5.7 is a mean machine. 41k miles in a year with 171k now and she still purrs like a kitten.
What did you think about your 3.6 engine?
@@arturoespinoza2371 it was ok. Definitely should’ve paid the extra $5k-7k for the Hemi. Oh well, live and learn.
@@brevinainslie6357 the reason I ask is because I just bought a 2019 3.6 4x2. Better on gas, just need it to do my rental work and enjoy the smoother ride going to work and to school. Don’t plan on towing anything big, MAYBE to tow a camper big enough for 2. Anything I should expect or look out for? Anything you recommend I buy or do to enhance the experience?
I've got an 04 1500 with the Hemi. Bought it used, wrecked it. Rebuilt it and still going strong!
Love when Scottie does these kinda videos.
I have a 2006 facelift hemi with 348,100 miles on it without any rebuilds. I like how you mention this 2004 isn’t old enough to have a cassette deck but my 2006 does along with that 6 disc CD player lol
Truck was most likely made at the St. Louis Fenton Chrysler Truck facility where they had two production lines running simultaneously and DAIMLER put in Hundreds of Millions in upgrading the facility after they merged. Now today it is an empty field and the Truck plant was leveled to the ground - all gone.
That's just sad and a shame.
Wow..same thing happened with a GM plant in St Therese Quebec. Stood for 30 years was upgraded for the fire bird and camaro and then sales slumped and that was it closed in 2002 and the whole building desfroyed and redeveloped.
My grandpa worked there and retired his name is Bill
I grew up down 5 minutes from I44 from there. Lots of friend's dad's worked there.
I’m from STL and this makes me very sad
I have a 2004 RAM 2500 ST, 5.7 hemi, manual transmission, snow plow and towing package with 254,000 miles on it. I bought the truck new. The only recurring problem I've had is the pilot bearing. It has a tendency to seize up over time. Living in New Jersey, the biggest issue is rust. The bottom links on the front axle rusted out. I had to have the frame repaired because it was rusting out. And body rot. But, the engine is still going strong!
I own my 2005 Rumble Bee since new and had it undercoated every year. Our Canadian winters can take a toll on vehicles but mine has no rust and is mint.
I suggest a Crown undercoat if available, mine is going back for an undercoat next month.
Had a single cab one of these as my first truck. Drove it like a teenager for around 70,000 miles and never had any real issues I can recall besides an exhaust hangar breaking.
I am still driving my 2004 Dodge ram that I bought new in 04. It has 207,000 miles and still runs like new. It does suffer from a manifold leak. I am big on maintenance so it has had nothing but synthetic oil since its 1st oil change.. definitely been a good truck for me.. it's 4x4 and I definitely drive it in some tough conditions
“For people with gigantic arms” - Scotty is the best. 👍
in reference to the keyway problem, they make what they call a step key, one side is bigger, you can measure the damaged side and come up with a size that can be ground down to mimic the damaged keyway in such a way that it has to be tapped in with a piece of brass, while at the same time you have bought a key that fits the undamaged key of the part that slides onto the shaft. at the machine shop we also did maintenance work like this all the time , the customer had a machine down and they were losing big money any time it was down and we did stuff like this all the time, do it right and you will never have any more trouble rather than tear the machine down for days or weeks
Just a nice man to listen to as well as his knowledge, thank you Sir
I have an 03 Dodge Ram 1500 4 door with 3.7 v6 with automatic transmission. It’s been a great truck. I bought it brand new in April of 2003 with only 3 miles. Today, 3/3/23, it has 306,000 miles and still running strong. Only items I’ve replaced besides regular maintenance was front wheel bearings, and ball joints. It loves to eat ball joints and wheel hub bearings, other than that it’s been a fantastic truck. And it still drives like the day I bought it from Planet Dodge.
Hey same truck single cab, On your ball joints where did u buy them from?
@@Sir_BoxesI got mine from 1A Auto but the mechanic was pissed off and told me that rivets mean you have to replace both upper and lower control arms. Complete front end bar end kit $100
Same exact engine in a 2010 nitro at 285,000, still runs fine and has the same issues with wheel bearings and such lol
I’m buying the same one you’re talking about and that makes me feel a lot better about my purchase
Same engine 231k miles.
Im a landscaper running a 2007 dodge ram 370,000+ miles. Abused every single day. Driven through woods, mud, rocks. Never failed me completely. Besides the starter and fuel pump not marking she’s running tip top. My daily is a 2012 single cab ram 160k miles. It has the exhaust bolt tick I’ve been too lazy to fix but shes tip top also
I have a 2008 ram with 4.7 v 8
and is a great truck no problems
153,000 miles
Same here, 2007 4.7
I've got a 2003 4.7L. 280k miles. (10k that I've put on it). It has been reliable for me and given me a usable vehicle when I've needed it. It does have some issues I need to fix. One being the downstream o2 wiring (when changing it, the wires on the truck side of the harness just came right out with no pressure, so they probably did that before I got it thinking they could just hide it). Overall, I'd have loved to have gotten this truck years ago. Pretty solid overall.
My 1998 Ram 1500 with the 5.9 magnum still starts right up every time. Only 92k original miles thought. Automatic. Rides smooth still and I can take a nap across the front seat if need be.
Veryintresting and informative videos professionally created well done lots of time and effort
The old magnum engines are near bulletproof. The 3.9 isn't winning any 1/4 miles, but it's cast iron and will outlast the frames on most vehicles. 12 years ago I bought a 94 3.9 Dakota for $1200 and I've probably put less than $3500 into it since. $1400 of it being a 42rh trans rebuild.
My dad has had 2 3.9 Dakotas, first one he bought late 90s, second one he bought 8 years ago maybe? I also have a 3.9 Dakota myself now, these are great trucks indeed!
I had an 88 Dak 3.9 with 5 speed manual. 450K when the engine finally went, ( I think timing chain broke). And it was a short box, I should’ve fixed it.
My father had a 2000 Dakota with the 3.9 that truck was rock solid. 260,000 miles on it when he passed away. Someone's still driving it now.
I got 96 dodge ram 3.9 with 42r it's got 500,000 if it's a rebuilt motor or what I don't know but it's a damn good engine
There are several transmission rebuild manuals out there that would have guided you through a rebuild of the 42rh. Have rebuilt several of the larger units, and they are relatively easy to pull down and rebuild, you will have to fabricate several tools, however.
I have a 2004 dodge ram 4.7 magnum automatic trans bought new. Best truck ever bought. Still own it 20 years later and it has 250,000 miles original engine and transmission. Knock on wood I can get another year or two out of it. All I have done to it is regular maintenance.
2003 4.7 mag. Amazing truck so far only 70k on the clock.
Gotta ask, when did you find the timing chain needed replacing with yours? Know it can vary truck to truck but be interesting to know how long it lasted for you?
Have the same setup 04, 290,000 miles. Really is part of the family at this point
In the fall of 2002, I bought a brand new 2003 Dodge Ram 2500HD w/5.9L Cummins Turbodiesel. About 20 years later and 210,000 miles later, I finally sold my old truck. That’s another Dodge of the same era that one can be reasonably confident in purchasing, so long as it has the Cummins Turbodiesel.
Nice!
Have the 02 4.7. 215,000. Runs like new
Our family has both a 1500 5.7 for a winter truck and a 2500 5.9 cummins which hauls our trailer in the summer. Both have been excellent pickups. The 5.7 has more then enough power for the average Joe. and given the price of diesel in Canada (1.90 a liter where I'm to, gas is 1.60) the 5.7 is a no Brainer at the moment. Which is unfortunate, given the excellent reputation of the 5.9, but this generation 5.7 is very very reliable as well before they gave them MDS in 2007.
Best Cummins 03-05 hands down.
My dad has an 2003 dodge 2500 5.9 Cummins automatic. 300,000 miles all stock, still running great.
You're the best Scotty!!
Its always a pleasure to see you turn a wrench. 👍
Great video!
my dad has a 2004 dodge ram that he bought brand new when it came out and he still has it the truck runs like a dream honestly
I have a 2012 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi. So far no problems and runs good. It's more base so I don't need to worry about electronics going which is nice
The transmission in that truck is technically a 6 speed. Mechanically it's basically the same as the 65RFE, but instead of using all 6 gears, two of them take turns being 2nd gear depending on whether you are towing, or if the shift is an up or down shift.
Truth
That’s weird I didn’t know that existed lol I know the old 4AOD, 4R70, and 4R75s in all the V8/RWD Fords 2011 and back, like in my 2010 crown Vic, sounds and acts like a 6 speed for some reason. It can be pretty tricky telling what gear you’re in cause they shift so smooth.
@@ESPLTD322 that's the lockup torque converter engaging which can be easily mistaken as an extra gear.
My old Ford did that and initially made me think it was a 5spd auto
@@engineer_alv oh yes i can’t ever tell if it’s in 2nd or 3rd or sometimes 1st or 2nd
What would be the purpose of designing it like that? Also, what do you know about the transmission in the 99 Durango SLT 5.2?
I enjoy the videos you put out keep up the good work. I have a Lincoln MKZ hybrid 2017 had to replace the battery at the dealer they charge me to reset the BMS is there a Scan tool out there I can buy to do that myself.
I have an 05’ Ram 1500 5.7. I purchased the truck new and have taken care of it over the years. I have replaced plenty of external parts; EGR, water pump, cam sensor, and so on. I have never had any internal engine or transmission problems with the truck and it has over 250,000 miles. I do use synthetic and change the oil regularly. I have changed the transmission fluid twice.
My 08 ram with the 4.7 has truly been the best truck ive ever had
I've owned 3 ram 1500's, 2012, 2016, 2022 and have loved them. No issues
Well hell your oldest one is only 9 years old
My 2011 hemi is surprisingly running fine at the moment. Just typical maintenance and a TIPM replacement so far at 110k. We will see if the rollers or lifters go out in the next 20k
Thank you Scotty for the great info
My grandpa had a 2003 5.7 4x4. Traded it in 2012 for a brand new Grand caravan because my grandma complained about getting up and down out of it. He traded that 3 years later for a 2015 bighorn
Lol
I just traded in my 21 Rav4 TRD for a 2014 Ram. 😂
Do not take your car to the dealership they don't know how to fix it,they just replace parts.
I have owned many dodge trucks and still do. I have 2 v10’s and a 06 Cummins and I love them. I have also owned 318 and 360 in magnum and LA motors I have had great luck with them. My v10’s are getting old but still trucking along.
Love my 2005 5.7 Liter. Sure she's got rust, and the Drivers side door thought the Fender was a Tasty Snack, and she rejected the Muffler. But she still runs fine with 2 Donor fenders and an Oil Change. Gonna be taking her to AZ for a much needed and deserved restoration and maybe Repaint depending on all what needs to get done.
Every truck has it's quirks, this one has alot
I am still driving the 2 Dodges my parents bought in 2006, a 2003 Dodge Dakota Ext Cab and a 2001 Dodge Durango SLT Plus, both with the 4.7 V8. The interior quality during the Daimler years is amazing as the Durango leather is still soft and not torn. Even the carpet is still plush 🧸
My dad's 1996 Dodge Caravan interior has seen alot of hard service and it's still some how mint! It was used as a work truck hauling firewood and newspaper. After 15 years and 370 000kms of hard use none of the trim pieces fell off!
@@ChillkootMarkoweethe vehicles produced during the Daimler Chrysler days had nicely crafted interiors. I've had 3 Grand Cherokees and still driving the Durango SLT Plus and a Dakota. The interiors are still in great condition for 20 year old trucks. Unfortunately, I have the 4.7 V8s and already replaced one. Can't complain though, they e been in the family since 2006.
@@wadet73I have a 2006 Durango. Any suggestions on maintenance? I already did both valve covers pvc egr etc. it only has 107,000 miles. Was it a good deal I got it for a trade on a motorcycle I was pretty much done riding. Approximately 2,000 dollar value
It's unfortunate all the HEMI 5.7 got outsourced. I bought my 2019 RAM 1500 4X4 with the Pentastar V6...no trouble at all. The truck is head turner too.
Just bought a 2019, 5.7 classic. First Ram ever owned. Very pleased so far.
Hey Scotty - tried looking through your videos for an answer already on this and came up short. I've got a service manual on the way, hoping it's got a decent schematic of the electrical system, but in the meantime - you ever hear of a power windows, blower control, and radio going out at the same time, but the power locks still work. 05 Power Wagon. Asking for a friend.
I replaced 3 EGR valves on my minivan. Look very similar. The first two replacements failed after about 6 months. Bought a Mopar replacement and its still working fine 3 years later.
Love my 2005 Durango 5.7 Hemi Magnum!! Will drive this for another 20 years, so dependable and almost lifts the front tires off the ground.
5.7 isn’t a magnum
@@diablocls55Sure i have the Same, 2005 5.7 Hemi Magnum
I love my 98 Durango 5.9 magnum, starting to rust a little but been nothing but reliable.
Bought an 04 Hemi from a friend. Almost 200k and still going strong. He has a 250k 05 that is as well, minus a not so great transmission when it's cold.
Just for Dodge Ram 5.7L engine owners. I own a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7L engine. Never had a problem with the Hemi tick. The 5.7l takes 7.5 qts of oil Vs factory that says 7.0 qts. Lack of oil is what’s causing the hemi tick.😊
I doubt half a quart is going to make a difference in an engine that takes 7.0 quarts or more, so half a quart is the problem, lol.
I still have my 05 RAM 2500 5.7 Hemi. Its I great truck, no major issues yet. And I use it like a truck!
My grandma had a 2003 ram for years I was born in 2003 she had it since I was a little fella I thought it was the coolest truck when I was little but besides the point the engine blew up about 2 years ago but it died with 250,000 miles and it was a pretty good truck surprisingly it wasn’t rusting out or anything either
It was a real treat seeing you turn wrenches
I mean i'd rather have a reliable 350 horsepower motor in a truck than something close to 400 and gonna grenade in 5 years or possibly less. The tip for those 5 speeds is to make sure you change the little filters in them. a lot of the time those screens get clogged and start causing problems. my brother had to do it in his 2005.
i have both .... 2005 and 2013 and the 2013 has given me zero problems.
My Stepfather is a mechanic for Chrysler Dodge and tried to talk me into buying a Dodge and I still won't buy one.
Scotty! Your a godsend! I just avout to buy this model generation in two weeks. Saved enough to buy one!
I still miss the 318's and 360's... I still have a '97 witha 360 in the woods that I may pull out and work on for plowing.
The hemi lifter problem is an oil pressure problem.
Prolonged idles kills the rollers on the lifter pins, which causes the pins to wear the cam lobe.
Never prolong idle anything.
Manually raise rpm by pressing the throttle every 3-5 minutes.
Bump the idle up from 500 rpm to 750 rpm, if you idle regularly and you will never have an issue.
You need 45 psi or better, not the 39 psi at 500 rpm
I trade my trucks every 200 thousand miles and my kid still has my last hemi running strong at 200 k plus.
I shut off 7 and 8 gears when I tow heavy.
You can shut off gears?
@@tsmith4719yes, on the steering wheel buttons
3:40 “And a humongous arm rest for people with gigantic arms” hahah😂 just the way he said that cracks me up hah
I have a 2008 dodge ram bought it with 90k and they had wrecked it bad enough that the rear frame had to be replaced. Original everything in the engine. Im sitting at 265k now and the only issues ive had are electrical such as the four wheel drive and cruise control. But the engine couldn't care less. It finally started leaking a drop of oil out the rear main . But like a 10th of a quart per oil change. I was really impressed with it's performance considering i drive it like a race car/work truck at the same time.
Love your videos!! Are awesome!, greetings from Peru!
Not sure I understand Scotty...The newer Rams have the German 8 speed transmissions in them that Scotty had said were good transmissions...Now he's trashing them? I don't get it...
I bought my 2004 RAM 1500 4x4 with the HEMI new. Still have it with 115,000 on it. Runs great, keeping it till it's done or I'm done. This one Scotty is showing needs the shorty ignition wires. Get rid if the wires that cross over the intake. The A/C condenser is is good design. No restriction to the radiator, genius.
Absolutely one of his best videos!
Awesome video. I have a 2004 Ram 1500 with the 4.7l engine. Still on the road with regular preventative maintenance. These engines gum up even with regular oil changes but a flush keeps it running. Transmission is solid at 156K. Germans did Chrysler a solid in design and manufacturing good pickup trucks.
Dakota 2004 sport i gave it up
2000 4.7l with 271,000
4.7 are thirsty little motors
One design feature Chrysler fixed with early 2004 version. Crankcase vent tube ran from pvc valve at oil fill to the back of the engine. Replacing the tube means laying flat over the engine to reach behind far enough to replace the tube. Pain in arse. Later 2004 version changed the routing to make it more accessible. Hoping to keep my truck on the road a few more years. Scotty's videos on newer pickups is disheartening concerning the lack of quality and performance.
The Hemi is 100 percent a Chrysler design , it was designed primarily by retired Chrysler engineer Floyd Allen in highland park Michigan . The 5 speed automatic is also a Chrysler design . The 4.7 was actually designed by AMC engineers before Chrysler bought them .
Good video. But the 2010 to 2014 Dodges Use the same five-speed nag 1 transmission that’s in this truck. But in another video he said the same transmissions were junk. I guess I don’t understand
I assume he’s going from a quality standpoint, and in terms of who had a better track record. But I agree it’s kinda arbitrary, 545RFE bad because Fiat, but also 545RFE good because Daimler
@@saratc660 Yes. My 14 Charger R/T has the exact same 545RFE Tranny in it, and my car was built 1 month Before FIAT was involved. (under the hood it says Chrysler Group LLC, not FCA)
I had a 2004 Ram with 3.7. At 15 or 20 k during cold weather doing cold start it had a pretty good knock in it, lasting 1 or 2 minutes. I gave it a new home.
great video! I have one of these beasts and it's running strong. Lots of little things failing but it's old what do you want?
Wow Scotty, you never fail to be a genius, amazing how you figure this stuff out!
Hey Scotty, love your videos!
I have a 2002 Mazda Protégé 5 2.0L AT and I just replaced the EGR and the car runs a little better, but still has the same symptoms of idling rough. It seems to drive fine, but when you're stopped or parked it seems like it wants to stall. The engine has a few error codes, including P1569. I've swapped the Solenoid Valves around and that didn't help. I've taken the car into a few shops and they have no idea either.
Love this guy!
still got my 03 2500 cummins. 625,000 miles and still going. one thing about them is they're easier to maintain and work on. yes there's aggravating aspects ( blend doors issue and the odometer issue ) but it's really been a terrific truck
I have 2010 4.7 with 324,000 original. Replaced water pump twice and timing chain once. I run Pennzoil 5/20 full synthetic and swear by it. If it gave up the ghost tomorrow I’m buying another 4.7 the following day. 😉
5/20 is pretty thin give 10/30 a try
My 07 Durango(hemi) has been good to us but needed an intermediate steering shaft. Part is discontinued with no known aftermarket part. Sad I had to install a junkyard part from a Durango with more miles than mine.
I hate it when that happen. They discontinue the part and then nobody else makes it ☹️
I have a 2005 Ram 1500 4x4 with the 5.7 that I purchased new. As of today my truck has an honest 417,000 miles on the engine and rear end. Now I have maintained this truck probably better than most do. Regular oil changes at 6000 miles, rear end oil at 40,000 miles, and trans fluid changes at 40,000 miles. Aside from batteries and EGR valves, this truck has been great. I have no problem telling folks that Dodge makes a great truck.
Had the same problem on this truck and it was causing multiple misfires from the Egr valve. She's running mint again.
That era (2003-2008) Hemi had valve-seat drop issues. The intake valve seats were made of a different material than the head and when they heated up they expanded at different rates. Eventually (usually around 120k+ miles), that little valve seat will drop into the cylinder causing all kinds of damage. The way to prolong it is to AVOID idling for long periods (avoid drive-thrus, etc.)
Reducing idle also apparently helps with the lifter issue on 2009 and up hemis
@@lostkaiser1995, agreed. Good point! In 2022, Dodge also changed the oil recommendation for the 5.7L hemis from 5W-20 to 0W-20. I don't know if that was to help with the lifter issue or not, but I've heard it was.
Wasn't that a 3.7/4.7 issue?
@@juliogonzo2718no it doesn’t affect the 4.7s. It’s a hemi issue
@@MegaDevify yeah it does. 4.7/3.7 drop valve seats when they overheat. Dodge Dakota im driving now I got for cheap cause that's what happened. Guy overheated it and it started to miss. I put a used engine in it. Looked like the piston had damage with a bore scope. After I swapped it I discovered I could have just put a head on it piston was fine. Valve seat was out of its bore holding the valve open when I took the head off. Wish I had just put a new head on and new chains. it was a low mile engine and the one I put in had twice the mileage of the truck.
I have the 5.9 (360 cid) engine in mine and it runs fantastic even with 160k on it and only uses 1 quart of oil in between changes which i try to do at 3k miles.
thanks scotty. i learn a lot from you
I used to do my own tune ups and maintenance on various cars that we owned through the past four decades, until the
'Electrification' of the automobile. I am genuinely amazed, at the Staggering level of Scotty's knowledge and expertise.
You Extremely Lucky Americans, particularly those who are geographically close, to be able to visit Scotty!! Beyond any

Where is Scotty now..i heard hr was in Houston earlier...where is he now?
@@leelakrishna4488 He moved away from Houston and has a home in Tennessee and Rhode Island.
I have an '04 Jeep Wrangler, it's been great all these years. Thanks Daimler!
i have an '01 wrangler, and it's been costing me some money
I had an 03 Grand Cherokee. It was the biggest unreliable POS I’ve ever owned. Thanks Daimler!!
@@sorrowcat2724 they definitely don’t make the Cherokees like they use to! I’ve got a 1999 with over 300k miles. Still running like a champ.
I have a 2004 dakota with 98K with the 4.7 magnum V8 and it's been rock solid. I just had the 100K done at a shop, they replaced both bank headers which were slightly warped and leaking exhaust causing a tick, had the fuel pump replaced as it was getting tired and new plugs and that's all I've done to it so far
Glad I bought the 06 grandcherokee I bought now. Made with the 4.7 and 5 speed Mercedes’ trans. Thought it was a bad idea at first but only issue left to deal with on it is the rear main seal
On the 05-10 grand Cherokee’s the 3.7, 3.0 diesel and 6.1SRT8’s got the 5 speed W5A580 Mercedes’ automatic the 4.7 and 5.7 v8’s used the Chrysler 545RFE 5 speed automatic. Both good transmissions.
I was told from a few different sources that the 3.6 VVT engines are also good. Is that wrong? It is about the only thing in my Grand Caravan that hasn't needed replacing. Still runs good with 300 k on it.
In my opinion it’s the best engine dodge uses that isn’t a V8. I have a 200s with the 3.6 and it’s the only reason i own the car
Fixing up my late step father's truck thats the exact make model and mileage of this one. Thanks. The engine is magnificent but his dementia destroyed every piece of the body! You're always so helpful!
Have a 2004 Dodge Stratus SXT 2.7 liter with a 180,000 that's been well maintained and that's the key to that engine. Have changed the water pump and timing chain once as a precaution.
I bought my 2004 Dodge Dakota SLT long bed with 4x4 and 4.7l V8.
I loved it because it still had an old style front end and fenders.
It spent most of its life on the island of Maui until about 85,000 miles. Then I moved to Oregon and eventually Virginia.
Did a couple trips around the US and drive it with all my belongings from Oregon to Virginia.
It still has just over 100,000.
Worst case was my son's and now grandson did a job on it.
Luckily I had the 12 year warranty. I've had the ac replaced under warranty, rear end under warranty and am fixing it right now after my grandson rear-ended people for a third time.
I'm getting to be an expert on the front end. I've replaced water pump, cv axles and other front end bushings. I just changed the valve cover gaskets for oil leaks. Ready to reinstall the clutch fan, radiator, condenser and bumper.
I still like it though. The oil pan gasket could use a change, but I'm not pulling the engine to get the oil pan off.
I'll be turning it over to my grandson, so he can do it.
I would love to see Scotty do a review on the 4.7 magnum engine. The hemi and this engine use the same transmission.
2008 , 4.7 L engine automatic trans. 1/2 ton 322,427 miles !! Best truck I’ve ever owned !!!
I remember in my dodge ram 1500 I used to use the huge arm rest as a table to put my fast food. It fit everyone’s food bags even people in the back seat. (Even tho they had a arm rest in the back too that was pretty big also.
Scotty I have owned a 96 dodge ram 1/2 tom 360 auto, It has 325,000 mile;s runs and drives new to this day,
You’re the Best Scotty 👍
I watch Scotty's videos just to hear his iconic laugh.
