Or I mean. you can rebuild it yourself sense the 46/7/8rh/e are a really simple design. while fixing all its problems all for only 800 or so bucks. the only "special" tool you need is a small press to compress the 850 pound overdrive spring.
I have a 99 Ram 2500 with the V8 Magnum and my uncle bought it new in 1999. It went through three transmissions in 50,000 miles and then when the third one went out he put a Jasper in it and that Jasper has lasted 210K.
Got a 1990 ram that the only reason it got a "new" trans was whoever rebuilt it messed something up so it would jump into neutral and it blew out the clutches, a bad trans builder will kill it every time, also any dodge mechanic will tell you that you really should add a secondary trans cooler, they fixed the frying issue in the 3rd generation by adding that cooler
I was at a automotive repair shop several years ago and overheard the owner on the phone telling someone that he hated Toyota! When he got off the phone I asked him why he hates Toyota? He says the dam things never break and he can’t make any money on them! Best endorsement I have ever heard!
I had three Toyotas from 1986 though 1994 and they were good trucks, but, each of them had problems. The 94 blew a head gasket at less than 60k. Now, I would not drive one, I will stick with my 2014 F150 with the Covote engine, love this truck.
I love how once this mid 2000's hit every truck manufacturer went to crap. I really wonder if it was something to do with the recession in 07 when they all took massive bailout money. They realized the old truck were too reliable and had to cut quality a bit to make more money on parts / service or selling you a new truck every 5-10 years instead of 10-20 years.
Its the epa cracking down on every vehicle after 2007 and you see massive failures on the fuel saving or emissions technology you see failures ramp up on everything from big caterpillar diesels to small 1500 trucks
Watched this as I sat in my 05 Tundra waiting for my daughter to get out of school. 141,000+ miles and the only thing I've had to do is replace the alternator on the 4.7....damn good truck
I have a 2004 Nissan Titan with 146k and with the original cats. The truck has never left me stranded. Just did front wheel bearings and I actually do plan on replacing the entire exhaust, including manifolds because of rust issues. Was in New York for 100k and Ohio since then. Frame is still solid and 4x4 works great. No complaints 🤷🏻♂️
While I admit some of his older videos are funny, Scotty Kilmer is killing his image with his opinion and rants on Politics. It's pretty annoying, no matter which side you swing. Nobody wants to hear that shit, politics is already all around us...We come to these types of channels to learn about cars and trucks. CAR WIZARD keeps it strictly on the subject. Team CAR WIZARD all day!
all be careful with 90’s yota pickups w the v6. i can’t remember the engine code but they blew head gaskets every 80-100k miles and it was a very known issue. those 4 cyl are deadbeat reliable tho. not very powerful, but reliable
@@madebydade305ify Yes, at the 260,000 miles mark the trans lost gears but never stopped being mobile. Got it rebuilt and thats the only major work I've ever had to do to it. The undercarriage is rusty is hell from Michigan weather but this truck has been totally reliable.
I had a nissan titan that I really liked. I started doing research on possible issues and decided that if something went wrong it would get very expensive very quickly. So I decided to sell it after a year of ownership while it still was in good condition. One month later, the guy that bought it told me the front diff went out. Thousands of dollars. I felt bad for the guy but I was glad that I decided to sell it when I did.
@@andrewtorrisi345 I feel that. I have a 2011 RAM 1500 with the 4.7 that suffered a cam failure last weekend. Same cam and lifter issues as the 5.7. The main issue is that the lifters are splash oiled from underneath, and that the oil ports are too small. Not getting enough oil (or the right oil - MOPAR say my engine should run on 0w20, but every mechanic I know that fixes hemis says 5w40 is the way to go) causes the roller on the lifter to seize and then it eats the cam lobe clean off. For reference, my truck has just over 100k miles, was only ever dealer serviced and maintained all service schedules and updates, was never abused, has approx 70% unloaded highway miles, and only towed occasionally (and nothing over 2000lbs). My local and trusted speed shop wasn't even willing to open the engine - the owner just said "Hand me $5000+ taxes for a reman motor, and it's gonna take us 2 full days of shop time @ $120/hr to do the swap right".
@@skruface check out uncle Tonys garage. He has a video on exactly what causes those cam failures and its enlightening... ill never buy a 3rd gen hemi because of that video
I've got a first generation tundra with almost 300,000 mi on it as a contractor truck and besides the frame resting issues it's been all routine maintenance.
Definitely agree with the Toyota recommendation. I just recently found an '08 Tundra that only had 74k miles on it, with full dealership maintenance records dating back to when it was bought brand new. That was a truck I couldn't pass up!
My long time buddy’s dad has an 07 F150 with the 3v 5.4 that just rolled over 300k miles with the original engine. The secret is religious oil changes. The truck tows regularly too
Exporado M exactly. It’s all in how you care for the motor. If you change the oil every 3-5k miles and plugs every 40k-50k miles it’s a fantastic motor. Love my 05 KR 3v 5.4. Towed 6k pound payload with it 1200 miles over three days and she took It like a champ. 12mpg the whole time.
Yeah, I believe that 100%. My buddy has a 5.4 3v that is his daily beater. I mean he loves it but when he off roads in it he shows no mercy lmao. Very solid trucks and the engines can also be pretty bulletproof if you know how to maintain one. I'm happy that the car wizard told people that the 2v was a perfectly fine engine because some people seem to forget that the 2v and 3v are almost completely different engines.
@@ninevoltmodz4687 Very true I sold my 99 2v in 08 and never once tore into the engine, also to a point that the wizard made was that there was no recall, I think was due to to the fact that Ford came out with the better improved phaser, in 08, Im sure you still had allot of 05, 06 and 07s under warranty that had had these parts replaced. I bought mine used and had the latest parts in it,
Was really surprised about what he had to say about Toyotas and to be perfectly honest he's right on the money out of all the trucks I've owned my 2010 tundra has only needed oil changes and recently the brakes 10/10 would recommend

As a fellow mechanic, this advice earned my sub. When it comes to the REALLY new cars 2016+... Brand name doesn't matter, they're all pretty much the same. Too many electronics.
@@joseCalderon1976 I can't bring myself to recommend anything past 2016 unless you make good money and don't worry about being in a cycle of leasing them. That way you get rid of it and get another new one before warranty is off. Cost vs lowered reliability from too many wires, sensors, electric motors, microchips and computers along with Chinese produced parts for all automakers are all negatives to me. I still think Japanese cars have a slight edge in reliability but not like they had pre 2009. The vehicles we own in our family reflect this... a 1990 D350 Dodge 5.9 12v Cummins, a 1993 W350 Dodge LE 5.9 12v Cummins, and a 1989 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4.0. All years tested reliable vehicles. Easy, and cheap to repair. Thanks for your comment, have a great day!
@@BrodieBr0 I don't blame you! Believe it or not, it's a different animal, but after fixing a few worn things, my 2012 Infiniti m37 has been a very good car. 158k and no problems. But yeah, cars are way lighter. Damn. I see that a good used 2006 Chevy is like $10? They want like $15k for like a 2005 low mileage Tundra (extended cab) 😱. I'm justamente going to keep driving my 2003 reliable Chevy Trailblazer 4x4 until it dies. Very roomy and comfortable. I drive it to work every day. 18mpg. Not bad for a heavy 4x4.
@@joseCalderon1976 Yeah I totally agree with that philosiphy... some newer cars no doubt will out last others but I think it's much easier to get a ''sensor lemon'' now days than ever I've always loved Trailblazers! I'm going to keep driving what I have the rest of my life if possible. I'm 50 so if that's another 20-30 years I'll be happy. haha Seeing the path the world is on now... I'm too scared of what the world might be like past then....
Every generation of mechanics has been saying that though. I agree to an extent but people in the 70s/80s were saying the electronic ignitions were too complicated compared to points. Then fuel injection was more complicated than the carbs, and before that you had electronic feedback carbs that were a nightmare. The early OBD1/EEC-IV stuff From Ford and others are harder to diagnose than a modern vehicle or something after 96.
My 2011 tundra is still going strong and smooth after 300 thousand miles. I have only replaced one chain tensioner that was stuck at 220 miles; I replaced all tensioners and chain rails-guides only because I already had it open and i had the new ones in hand. I was impressed and surprised to see how in a great shape the timing chain was, it still looked new!
I have an 04 ram 1500 with the 4.7l. I found out from experience why the head gaskets keep going bad. These engines require a special antifreeze from dodge. It's not the universal antifreeze. Universal will eat the head gaskets because of how the coolant passages are. I've been through 2 before I figured it out through ram forums. Now I have had the correct fluid in a long time and no issues. Yes a bit more expensive, but like you say so often. Buy the right stuff the first time. It's the same with the power steering on these. Normal power steering fluid eats out the rack and pinion seals. Dodge actually recommends ATF+4 in the service manual that nobody wants to read. So I killed a power steering rack because of my lazy mistake. It's good to read the owners manuals on every vehicle you own before replacing or topping of fluids. Especially with dodge. I love my dodge and if I didn't fix it myself every time, you are right. They would not be worth it financially. So read the owners manuals and owner's would have less issues and reliable vehicles no matter the make or model I'm sure.
Hmm, never knew about the coolant part. I have a 2002 Durango with the 4.7L. It's treated me well so far especially considering it had green coolant when I bought it and I never changed to the Dodge stuff. The engine and transmission seem pretty solid at 130k.
@@gpilsitz1783i always use regular antifreeze and never had issues. The secret is getting a double row radiator for better cooling. In sumner with ac on in the hottest day i still dont get temps above 206F.
Yes. This so called mechanic is clueless. I have had 44.7ss with 200k to 350k miles and zero issues. Even the transmissions have been rock solid. My current well used 2004 4x4 has over 200k miles and runs like butter. His constant nut slurping of Toyota is annoying as well. I just got rid of my 11 Camry that was a basket case. Sucker was totaled just because of suspension damage. Also found out there were 12 recalls on it Toyota never informed me of, one of which is a problem known to cause exactly what caused the accident. I also didn’t car for the inside A pillars, that covered airbags, coming off every time it got warm and they covered freaking airbags. Was burning oil like craz, dash was lit up like a Christmas tree, and the trans was slipping. I will NEVER buy another Toyota. I am completely fine with the 04 Dakota and 02 Avalanche Z71 I have now.
@@brianstewart8936No he's right. Still driving my 1996 4Runner 5 speed V6 4x4. 346k miles bud. The car was also negelcted on maintenance by my father during the 2008 recession. It didn't care. I have everything on it minty these days. Most durable and reliable vehicles on the planet.
I really appreciate how knowledgeable Mrs. Wizard is on the topic of trucks. Very well spoken. As well, the list is absolutely correct. Great video, quality content!
I think on the 07 and newer chevys it's mostly a lack of maintenance that causes the AFM to have issues. My 2012 silverado with the 5.3 hasn't had to have the engine opened up ever. it has 290k miles on it currently and runs butter smooth. I use the $4 ac delco filter and mobil 1 oil every 3-5k miles. never had a single engine problem.
The 4.6 is also extremely reliable. And so is the 5.4 in both 2 and 3V configuration. You hear how bad they are from dudes like this. The engine is stout with forged internals. I see them with 250K all the time on the original engines. Mine has been trouble free too
The 300 straight six was an amazingly reliable engine. Also the Dodge 318 is a tank. And I know the Ford 5.4 triton can go a long time, but I don't care what anyone says, I'll never ever own one. Now, my local Napa had an f150 with the 4.6 they used as a delivery truck. It had 415k miles (I saw the odometer myself, our shop did all the maintenance on the truck) when they sold it to a former employee who promptly drove it 2,300 miles to California without a problem. Stupid thing is still driving around over there somewhere. It was an automatic too. Original drivetrain if you can believe that!
This video re-enforces my decision to keep my 2002 Silverado 1500 5.3 liter forever. Bought it new in December of 2001 and had it ever since - no drive train issues. Oil, plugs, a/c vent actuator, fuel filters, tires, etc. 120k miles. Great pickup.
I loved my 2004 Ram1500 with hemi. Drove it for 270k miles and gave it to a friend in need. It's still going strong. I'm impressed with my 2018 Ram 1500 with the 3.6 vvt engine. Plenty of power for my needs, very good on gas. 90k miles on it already. I didn't buy another Hemi truck for the same reasons you mentioned, the new MDS fuel management nonsense.
@@III1IlIIlIllIl 😂😂😂😂 I’ve towed 10,000 pounds up and down the east coast. Not sure why you had problems. No rust either. There was an issue with rusted frames on tacomas a while back. This is my 4th Toyota and they’ve all been trouble free.
I have a 2005 Titan. Never had a major problem until the transmission line busted. I drove it to a repair shop, rather than having it towed. Had to rebuild the transmission, which still isn’t exactly right. But, it’s still going strong. No cat problems for me.

Best thing I ever did with the 06 Ram with MDS was unplug the MAF sensor. For whatever reason it disables the MDS and runs V8 all time. 300,000 on the 5.7 and still runs like the day I got it!
I get this with my Ram 1500 here in UK, the stupid light is always on, but a vehicle tech found no probs with his laptop. It turned out to need a new on board computer, which I don't want to spend out on, so I learned to live with the light, (Same with the seat belt light, I never remember to wear it!), despite the management light on, the truck runs perfectly. I love Dodge!
They look classy too, i wish i bought one, i have a 2000 5.9 durango 4x4 and that engine is reliable af no issues what so ever from 80k when i bought it to 160k now .
I had one, a 99. They were pretty bad. Terrible transmissions, oil-canning beds, A/C that never blows through the right vent, hidden coolant bypass under the accessory bridge. Nowhere near as bad as my 88 Chevy, but still not great trucks. And before you call me a Dodge hater, after the 99 I bought an 03, then an 06, and now drive a 2014 Ram.
I agree my father used to own a 01 dodge ram with a 5.2 it didn't cost him much and he love it and he is happy with it. Got to an accident now he have a 03 dodge ram with a 5.9 with a 4x4.
Godless Toyota got a 5.2 also. Just all around a good engine. Can’t explain it but I know how he feels. Lifters make a noise here and there but heavier oil helps. Doesn’t burn anything

I have worked on several Ford 5.4L 3v engines. If the cam caps are worn, dont even bother with new phasers and chains. If the caps are good then proceed with factory, cam phasers, chains and guides and use the cast iron tensioners from the 2v engines. HV Melling oil pump and it will run 250k without an issue. They make decent power and pretty good on fuel.
look for a 07-10 6.2 from gm trucks engine code l9h or l92 both great motors w not factory AFM DOD crap. l9h was a option for 10-13 but most are l94 motors w AFM DOD and throw lifters at 100k. l92 and l9h are great motors for swaps or hotrod truck
Yes. The sound of an American V8 is intoxicating. I had a Ford Crown Victoria police version, and it was awesome. The truck derived V8 only made 230hp, but it sure sounded wonderful. Then I spun it out on the one corner near my house that doesn't have an enormous oak next to it.
Have a 04 Ram with 211,000 miles on it. Best truck I've ever owned. I have Chevy, Ford and RAM in the driveway on and off since 94. The Rams have outlasted the others every time. My son did have a 04 f250 with 275,000 miles on it and that's with the 5.4. The truck fell apart around the engine and transmission but the drivetrain was still working when he sold it.
i think its a combo of six sigma manufacturing and the vortec platform. my 2000 gmc jimmy just rolled over 330k running great, and ive never had to replace anything on the block. the 4l60e is a different story, but nothing some improved servos and a 3-4 clutch pack couldnt fix

You're forgetting the era of frame rot that certain Tundras came with from the factory. Knew a Toyota tech that did several frame replacements under that recall.
@@sunbeam8866 I remember it only affected like one model year and my buddy said it was internal frame rot. On almost new trucks. His service manual stated they had to hit the frame rail with a hammer. Just what I remember.
@@JakeKaminskisRacing If this affected relatively new trucks, hopefully those got fixed or the vehicles are long gone. I've seen plenty of rot, not just on Toyotas or frames. Calipers, springs, control-arms, and just about everything else under a vehicle that's been well-salted for years, is going to look nasty. Fortunately, I was able to check all that on my '96 Tacoma before I bought it.
@@sunbeam8866 yeah it was on relatively newer trucks, if i can remember I want to say like 1-4 years old. My buddy said the hammer would go through the frame on some trucks, then they'd strip the body off essentially a new truck and re frame them. Was just a case of crap steel I believe.
I know Wizard was talking Tundra, but Tacoma also had multiple yrs of rotting frames made by Dana for them. Tundra was 2 years as I remember it. You still see a pile of rusted Tacoma frames outside Toyota dealers. I was told the truck needed to be inspected/ registered by Toyota by a certain date then it would be eligible for frame replacement at a later date. There are videos on You Tube of Toyota mechanics reframing Tacomas. Toyota also replaces any other underside parts at No cost if safety was an issue. That is standing behind your product. Ford should of done that with 5.4 3 V.
Might I add, for the older Chevy pickups replacement parts are inexpensive and typically readily available. The 5.3l engine is very reliable. I’ve seen plenty with over 300,000 miles and still running good.
My dad bought a 99 lightly used in...2001. Not in the US so still specced with a 4 speed manual (yes, four) and a variation of the 5.7l v8. It's the beater beast of burden and it's a bit beat up but it still starts every time and it can still do it's job as a work truck. Everything on it is original. 4 wheel discs without ABS and a mushy pedal makes for some fun if you're not smooth on the brakes and/or the truck bed is unloaded.
Might have to agree with you on that. I do read a lot of stories about people having transmission failures with these trucks while other people go over 300k without any issues. I have a 2001 Tahoe with 235K miles. Not sure if the trans was rebuilt at one point since I bought it used. I did install an external transmission cooler. Hopefully it helps extend the transmission life.
i have a 5.4 2006 f250 super duty with just over 230k miles on it. once you update the spark plugs and actually take care of the engine its a great truck that ive never had an issue with other than niknacky stuff
My 2002 f250 5.4l just hit 342K miles... No issues at all but normal factory recommended maintenance including timing chain replacements and transmission service... Runs as good as day 1 👊

Mrs Wizard must be a good cook. I've worked on cars and bikes for 50 years and as the years added up so did the inches on my waistline. finally I decide to build a platform out of plywood and 2x4s that fits in between the fenders where the hood rests when closed. This makes working on the back of an engine a breeze.
I loved my 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi. At 278,000 miles it bit the dust only due to my lower radiator hose blew and my niece kept driving it.

I bought a cheap Navigator of about that vintage after my pickup was totaled by someone running a red light (thank goodness for my dashcam). It had aftermarket pimpmobile wheels which I hated. Found a set of good Expedition wheels and swapped them out and it looked a lot better.
Had the 98 f-150 bought new sold at 16 years and 330,000 miles and was still running strong with one transmission rebuild. Bought 2004 Titan in 2014 with 130,000 on it and 6 years 100,00 miles later still running and driving excellent. one starter replacement (which is a pain in ass as the starter is located under the intake. Other than that nothing but oil changes and normal maintenance. You can avoid the catalytic converter situation by putting long tube headers with high flow cats after you buy a good running used 2004-2015 Titan. Mine are stock and no issue for me so far.
Man, you’re spot on. Got a Toyota Camry with 223,000 miles bought new (2007) and a 2010 SR5 Tundra with 73,000 with no problems. All the other trucks can keep their fancy gadgets, I’ll stick with my plain tundra.

@andrew ybanez. Damn right bro. I have a 2010 titan and i drive from cali to nevada every other month with zero issues. These trucks are so underrated and underestimated As well as the armadas. I know plenty of people who are very happy with these vehicles. I would buy another titan when it comes to it any day
The permanent fix is to upgrade to jba headers , increased performance and solid reliability, if you replace the cats they will fail again, whether they crack and leak or gets clogged , that's one upgrade to the titan and they're just as solid as a tundra for half the price 👍
Took your advice and purchased a 2014 F-150 minus all of the creature comforts. With 107k miles I hope it gets to 250k without any major issues. The price of the 2009-2010 was very tempting though.
No clue what a coworker of mine did, but apparently her transmission on her turn of the century F150 not only failed, but supposedly split in two or something of that nature while on the interstate?! On the flipside, my grandpa has had two early 2000s F250s... one single cab, the other a 6 seater with absolutely zero issues...
Very glad to hear your comments on the Dodge trucks! I'm a Toyota guy, but my son sold me his fairly clean '01 extended cab RAM with the 5.9 liter a few years back really cheap. Bought it just because every guy needs a good old truck and figured I'd sell it after a couple of years or so, but it drives, looks, and runs so good I just cant let it go! Drove a later model used Tundra the other day and it was undoubtedly really nice, but not so much nicer than my old Dodge that it was worth spending all that extra money on! Thanks for the great video, btw!
I've had dakota trucks for 20 years out of 3 trucks i can count on one hand how many times it broke never left me stranded. Great video. I love your sound affects
Yup those dakotas always have good paint and bodies, and don,t burn gas ,except the ones actually, running on the road .No wonder dodge stopped making them, what a waste of metal .
The only thing I can add about the 5.4 3 valve motors is to only use 5w20 full synthetic oil and change it every 5k and your odds of it running great for longer increases by over 50%. I've had several in my fleet and that's the one religious procedure I've always done and everyone has lasted over 300k miles minus the exhaust manifolds lol.
yeah v6s and v8s tend to contaminate oil with gasoline over time because of some minor piston blowby. this is a good tip for anyone with these kinds of engines
For the 5.4 triton, I'm not trying to say it's the best engine. What I will say is if you do the proper maintenance on them, they're solid engines. I noticed the year that my father stopped doing really consistent maintenance on his, he started having problems with the cams and cam sensors.
Look underneath. I work in an oil change shop since covid hit, and 1 out of every 30 GM vehicles DOES NOT have a leak. Typically its the rear main as its a two piece and is known to fail.
@@Watchout1010 your right. Thats my bad, HOWEVER, the new style seal they have leaks so bad that its appalling. We had a 2016 chevy come through the other day leaking so bad it was actively dripping. Truck only had 45,000 miles on it and he was going to have to drop about $900 bucks just to get it streetable
I literally laughed when you said Toyota's lol! I love my 02 tundra! 210k miles and I'm about to do a timing belt and water pump. Best running truck I've ever had
Not too bad of a job, I did my grandpa's tundra last year. Watch those cam gears they like to snap to a different position on you when you're struggling with the new belt. When I got everything back together and started it, 3 of the ignition coils decided at that exact moment to stop working. Damn near gave me a heart attack. They were original. 275k miles.
@Luis Bolanos Tundras are quick and have plenty of power daily drive and I put around $80 a week on gas depends on how people maintain them, I'm constantly beating out cars on steep uphills when all cars slow down, the truck keeps it's power. Then it depends if it's a V6 or V8 cause I have a V8 with 300 hp
Toyota are reliable, but I will stick with Ford 4.6l for real pulling and comfort. To me Tundra are more commuter trucks. I dont feel safe pulling in it. Besides every time when I used to pull a trailer with the mower on em, they would just chew up the driveshaft every couple of years. They don't even ride all that nicely. F150 rides like a BMW tbh even when pulling a boat. Talking about ten year old trucks here. Again I don't know about newer, as I drive a 2015 Subaru as a daily commuter and keep F150 when I gotta go cut my lawn at my other house.
Wizard, I had a 1994 F150 302 5 spd 4x4. I Bought it new & I worked up north in the oil fields of Aberta. I put 1,200,000 miles on it. It just ran & ran. I replaced the front end 2 twice, 2 trans, & the motor at 780,000 miles. Other than maintenance, it would run & run. My tires were replaced every 70,000 miles, & I ran on synthetic fluids. When Walmart had their own Synthetic oil, i would buy pails of it for $59 / 5 gal. I used synthetic diff fluid & synthetic trans fluid. I got 21mpg on the highway . By the end, the body was Swiss cheese & I decided to sell it. Best truck I have ever owned.
I recently had bought a 2002 Silverado, I love it. I took it on a road trip recently, I even did some light off roading. The truck handled it like a champ. So far zero problems with it.
yea i had a 2001 Chevy Silverado with the 4.8 v8 had it for 7 years no problems what so ever i miss that truck. I got a 2012 dodge ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi now had it for almost 2 years now i love this hemi so much fun to bad i couldn't keep both.

What is the Car wizard's thoughts on 3.5L ecobost or the 3.7 naturally aspirated F-150s? I think the 4.6 V8 it one of the best engines Ford ever made, but that body style is getting pretty rough up here in the rust belt.
GM delayed launch of the GMT800 generation a whole year just to work out bugs. That was a good truck. Minor point, GM Truck had a lot of issues with daytime running lamps - you often saw them with one out.
Daytime running lights not turning on are a really common issue. The two GM trucks my family have is an 02 Tahoe and a 99 silverado and they have their headlights on 24/7 because the ambient light sensor has gone out. Its a really easy fix the part is only $12 but I don't think most people know its that little black ball on your dashboard that's making these DRLs not work and most people don't want to take their radio out or take apart the entire dash. I've only fixed that issue with my silverado but the Tahoe I plan to leave it like that
I watched a video where you said to "Buy These Trucks" featuring a 2007 + generation Chevy Silverado. It had the 5.3 lite multiple displacement engine and you seem to absolutely love that truck. You were laughing and cutting up about it needed an LS1 swap, come to find out it was alreay basically an LS1 engine no swap needed. Anyway you went on and on about how much you love that generation as your favorite. So I guess you changed your mind since this video is an older video. At any rate I bought a 2012 Z71 with the 5.3 multidisplacement engine, on your recommendation. I literally bought this 2012 Silverado half ton Z71 Chevy truck because your opinion mattered that much to me. That's putting a lot of confidence in you and your opinion. I absolutely love this truck and I hope it is a good one because I paid a fortune for it. Then I stumbled across this video today and it's a little unnerving to hear you talk about how You have a low opinion of my truck in this video. By the way I love your videos. I subscribed to your videos, LOL and I unsubscribed from that little guy that waves his hands around all the time.
me too. I bought it new and it was incredibly cheap, actually. $21k cdn for a new base Tundra long box in 2010, just because no one would buy a single cab truck here. I still have it, original tires and brakes. Has the same 4.6L block as came on the $100k+ Lexus LS460. The only thing that might replace it some day is the Tesla Cybertrk.
Got a 2013 chevy 2500 6.0 that was bought as a pure work truck since brand new, like in December 2012. Not a single part has been replaced under the hood since factory. Regular oil changes and filter changes. Recently started leaking coolant, just over the wheels youd see the coolant tank slowly drop. Its been driven every day. 347k miles
Old man has a 2014 Tundra and its worked flawlessly outside of him banging up the truck himself form ramming into things haha. Heck its still running after him doing that is a better way of saying it. Only thing that sucks is that it really does drink gas especially in the city. Love the truck otherwise. Also finding parking for it can be painful, but I guess thats a issue with pretty much any modern truck now.
Interesting to hear about the head gasket issues with Chrysler’s 4.7, our jeep commander is pushing 260k miles and the worst we’ve ever had to deal with is a leaky header. Everything else on that engine aside from spark plugs and I think a throttle position sensor are original to the vehicle. Guess we just got lucky!
Sold our 2000 Durango with 255k miles on it running great. Only issue I had was Radiator, Fuel Injectors, A/C Compressor besides all the usual Preventive maintenance in the 15 years we owned it. $.7 with 3.92 rears
@@Locruid being reminded of this comment I made really bummed me out. In the two months since, a family member totaled that commander a serious rear end collision… The shop quoted us $8,000 for repairs! The Dodges are the easiest. (when) The trans goes bad, you just replace the whole truck.
Or I mean. you can rebuild it yourself sense the 46/7/8rh/e are a really simple design. while fixing all its problems all for only 800 or so bucks. the only "special" tool you need is a small press to compress the 850 pound overdrive spring.
I have a 99 Ram 2500 with the V8 Magnum and my uncle bought it new in 1999. It went through three transmissions in 50,000 miles and then when the third one went out he put a Jasper in it and that Jasper has lasted 210K.
lmao
Got a 1990 ram that the only reason it got a "new" trans was whoever rebuilt it messed something up so it would jump into neutral and it blew out the clutches, a bad trans builder will kill it every time, also any dodge mechanic will tell you that you really should add a secondary trans cooler, they fixed the frying issue in the 3rd generation by adding that cooler
James Jones Yeah. The transmissions on my truck were put in by Dodge themselves but then when Jasper did it they did it right so...

Not getting enough oil (or the right oil - MOPAR say my engine should run on 0w20, but every mechanic I know that fixes hemis says 5w40 is the way to go) causes the roller on the lifter to seize and then it eats the cam lobe clean off.

Wow. 300k? That’s really impressive. It’s basically a diesel.

I have a 2005 Titan. Never had a major problem until the transmission line busted. I drove it to a repair shop, rather than having it towed. Had to rebuild the transmission, which still isn’t exactly right. But, it’s still going strong. No cat problems for me.
Because they are far better trucks than they get credit for
@@jeremymitchell9970ironic thing is, NOBODY ever called them bad. Nissan just failed to market them, and they sold poorly. When in reality they can give ANY truck a run for its money that isnt the tacoma/thundra

Best thing I ever did with the 06 Ram with MDS was unplug the MAF sensor. For whatever reason it disables the MDS and runs V8 all time. 300,000 on the 5.7 and still runs like the day I got it!
Or run in tow haul mode also disables mds.
@@kunu98 yeah he use the good heavy oil and to him he loves that truck very much and he is very happy with it no complaints. But after the accident he got a 03 5.9 but he's not exactly happy but he tolerate it
I have worked on several Ford 5.4L 3v engines.
Car Wizard, you've awakened a new passion in Mrs. Wizard. She's goin crazy with all this historical knowledge on cars and trucks!
I'm after a US pickup in the UK. 70's to early 90's era. Can't beat the sound of a US V8
look for a 07-10 6.2 from gm trucks engine code l9h or l92 both great motors w not factory AFM DOD crap. l9h was a option for 10-13 but most are l94 motors w AFM DOD and throw lifters at 100k. l92 and l9h are great motors for swaps or hotrod truck
Jus remember...nuttin rust like a Chevy truck...
Yes. The sound of an American V8 is intoxicating. I had a Ford Crown Victoria police version, and it was awesome. The truck derived V8 only made 230hp, but it sure sounded wonderful. Then I spun it out on the one corner near my house that doesn't have an enormous oak next to it.
Go diesel in the UK.

Normally, frame-rot can usually be spotted before you buy, and doesn't sneak up and surprise you like some of these engine problems!
@Lusty depends on maintenance the 60e has a fairly low failure rate when taken care of
i have a 5.4 2006 f250 super duty with just over 230k miles on it. once you update the spark plugs and actually take care of the engine its a great truck that ive never had an issue with other than niknacky stuff
My 2002 f250 5.4l just hit 342K miles... No issues at all but normal factory recommended maintenance including timing chain replacements and transmission service... Runs as good as day 1 👊
This Old 99 I Drive Reached 174k Miles!
Ever Since That Plug Issued Got Fixed, It Just Wants To Get Up And Go!

I know plenty of people who are very happy with these vehicles. I would buy another titan when it comes to it any day
Aftermarket catalytic converters are cheap if you are worried about the issue he mentioned
I love my titan.
The permanent fix is to upgrade to jba headers , increased performance and solid reliability, if you replace the cats they will fail again, whether they crack and leak or gets clogged , that's one upgrade to the titan and they're just as solid as a tundra for half the price 👍
Right?! I love my titan, I’ll keep my eye out on the cats but I’ve heard the engine and trans are bulletproof

I can vouch that those 97-2004 F150s are tanks. I have a 98 4.6 and she’s reliable as can be, definitely worth the purchase.
I agree. Aside from the plug issue these older triton (before the 3 valve) have these trucks will last half a million miles easy. Reliable as hell!
2007-13 GM full size trucks with the 4.3 and 4.8 engines do not have the AFM. Those are okay to buy without any major issues.

I love Mrs. Wizard, the two of them are fantastic together.
Mrs. Wizard is awesome!
5w30 is best to use with the 5.4’s it will make it last so much longer
For the 5.4 triton, I'm not trying to say it's the best engine. What I will say is if you do the proper maintenance on them, they're solid engines. I noticed the year that my father stopped doing really consistent maintenance on his, he started having problems with the cams and cam sensors.
The 4.6 is a better engine, IMO. Not a lot of power, but bulletproof.
The 5.4L 2 valve is a very good engine.
Basically the same as the 4.6L
My 2011 Silverado 1500 has been nothing but great and reliable to me!!!

275k miles.
Got a Tundra has been great the entire time I've had it. I have a T100 as well haven't taken it to to a mechanic in over 4 years it's super reliable
Does that mean you have a better, not running truck?

The Mrs and Mr Wizard session was so cute. Love it!

In spite of all that, the damn thing still starts right up like new. The car may be dead but we can’t kill that motor!
My dodge with 4.7l had no issues until 290k miles.
A lot of people won’t do basic maintenance on their cars.
