I actually don't remember having trouble finding the fragments when I played it for the first time. I did have the official guide so maybe I used that more than I remember.
The cool thing about the PlayStation version is that you keep every skill and spell you learn even when you switch jobs.
I was very excited for this game in 2001. The last Dragon Quest game I played was Dragon Warrior IV in 1992. In 2001 I was right out of college. I remember going to the shop on my lunch break at work to pick it up. I took it back to work and poured over the manual at my desk hoping someone would see me and talk to me about Dragon Quest. No one did.
188 hours is a lot. I did the main game and postgame and maxed out all jobs except for the monster jobs. I love the way god looks in this game. He is just an old man in a toga.😄
I know people rag on the graphic of this game but I love them.

This game was my first dragon warrior game. I found it in a dump bin in a game crazy (yeah thas how long ago it was). It was long and that actually made me love it more. Then I played 8 and was sad. Not because it was necessarily a bad game, becauseit wasnt. But 7 really checked all my boxes. Plus the class system was amazing, for 2 reasons. 1 it was very diverse and 2 it rewarded effort put in.
I know people bash the intro being too long and it was loooooong, but to me it madeit feel more like a novel and not just a story. Honestly, most rpgs (especially today) are like comic books, a quick story, action packed, and in and out. This one was like reading the lord of the rings trilogy.

Dq7 on ps1 was my 1st dq. It along with lunar sssc convinced me that graphics are not a big deal if story and gameplay are good

I'm 1:43 minutes into this video and realized I made a big mistake getting DQ7 for $50 in credit at my local retro shop. DQ 8 is my favorite jrpg and I was hoping foe more of the same with this. I'm not ready for this kid of commitment!

Look, its a different experience for sure. But it IS fulfilling, if you stick it out. You may find the juice is not worth the squeeze, and there's nothing wrong with that. Just know there is a payoff

@@RPGArchive1 agreed! Keep an open mind -- a lot of the negative reception for VII is towards the low hanging fruit imo.

    This game is too long.

My final play log for 3DS was around 55 hours - it was long but not awful.

MY FINAL play for the 3DS version is just as long as the PS1 version OVER 200 HOURS.
