hi!! student ambassador at auarts here to give some insight, there are some changes being made as of Fall 2025 and first year studies will soon be no more! Students will apply directly into BFA or BDes soon!! So no more pressure of the second year portfolio for design students!!

the paying for software part is wild to me because im an animation student myself and the school gave us licenses for all mandatory software (adobe creative cloud, toon boom, tvpaint, maya, etc) that are part of the curriculum for the duration of our studies. it feels strange to me that an education institution doesnt provide you with the tools you need to actually complete their education

i'm a 2nd year student at AUARTS and the point about the uncomfortable furniture is no joke... i come back home from school with back pain almost everyday. FUCK THOSE STOOLS ON THE 5TH FLOOR IN PARTICULAR 😭
about the deadlines in 1st year studies, yes they're still insane- having to finish an entire project in 1 week almost every week was my personal hell. but they've considerably lightened the project load- where a few years ago you had to do like 9 paintings for a single project now it's like 2.
and holy crap!!! i recognize one of the project examples you put in the video! i remember my prof showing our class the self portrait one for design color fundamentals!

I also went to AUArts! In my experience, the blood feud is still present but not as bad as what lavandertowne describes. I was in graphic design, but did a minor in object design and did some media arts classes so I actually got to interact with people from other majors. Everyone in fine arts always had a negative "holier-than-thou" attitude towards me when they find out im a graphic designer, they all thought we're sellouts and not real artists :(. I also found it difficult to participate in school events or galleries as design students didn't get many opportunities to participate, or would find out last minute and all the spots would be booked. It's like everyone thought we don't want to do galleries but we do! There were so many galleries at school but it was rare to see any design works. The school itself also heavilly preffered the fine arts and there were always rumours of the design program being shut down and having their funding cut. During graduation we had an end of year show, which was for everyone to display their work (although it was heavily fine arts leaning) which was nice. The design students had a seperate "portfolio show" that was private (only shown to invited guests.) and took place during the same week, making it hard to prepare a piece for the end of year show. Honestly I didn't really like how the school always seperated us and kinda hid us away??? if that makes sense. Other than that I had an overall positive experience and would recommend people to attend!

Ey I remember you from my first year! Cool to see you pop up on my feed! I was kindof in a similar boat to you when going into the program since I too also grew up with watching lavendertowne's vids about this school. Though I ended up going straight into the school quickly after I graduated high school in our great year of 2020 so I didn't get to really make any connections with ppl irl. I still have the paints and a massive tub of Monster clay i only used for ONE assignment in a class I despised (yes im still salty about having to take that sculpture course lmao). I did end up dropping out after my first year to take a gap year to save up money to attend another school (which conveniently I just wrapped up the program I was apart of for that last month, it was Syn Studio's first Online Concept Art Program). In that program even though it was mainly taught in photoshop, we weren't forced to buy any of the adobe suite or anything (I even managed to snagg a totally legal version of zbrush thanks to my chill teacher lol) so I was able to use Procreate and Clip studio for most of my classes. A part of me wishes I was able to have the regular in person artschool experience, but I'm overall glad I didn't end up doing the four years and pivoted to the specialized program (tho I will miss that campus, damn was auarts a pretty campus)

Howdy! Thanks for sharing your experience and updated opinion on auarts, I'm a continuing first year over there trying to get into the design program, and I was really anxious about entrance portfolios and the whole fanart and anime art restrictions and watched a lot of lavendertowne's videos to prepare for it! It's really nice to see videos like yours and from more recent graduates pop up here showing how much the campus has changed since pandemic and since lavendertowne's videos, cause it's refreshing to know they started to be more lenient towards deadlines and submission and how realistically things have changed over there with professors and everything. But I can definitely agree that first year is super brutal with the work ethic and everything. Those fifth floor easels and chairs are a safety hazard and they're back pain encouragers, alongside having to buy those expensive golden brand acrylics for colour fundamentals. I'm just glad it's way chiller than it used to be, and I hope the design stream ends up being better! Congrats on graduation, hope you go on to do greater things :D

I plan to go to college for music education, majoring in percussion, but the art kid bubble hit hard. In my school I’m basically the percussion kid, along with one other guy in my grade but he’s more into drumset. I feel like once I get to school and I’m with a bunch of other determined percussionists it’s gonna hit hard 😭

As a former music education percussionist, I believe in you! It will feel a little stressful sometimes, but it will also feel so fulfilling being surrounded by other percussionists and students just as passionate about music as you are!
I ended up changing majors for my own reasons, but I don't regret my time with music ed and I actually miss it a lot sometimes!
I don't know if you were able to participate in any honor bands or state level band things during grade school. It kinda feels similar to that- super fun and rewarding, but there is some pressure! It's okay!
Happy to find another concert percussionist out in the wild! I'm cheering for you!

While I'm not a percussionist, I just finished my B.A in Music late last year. This may be because of my personality, but I actually found the experience of being put with other flutists and harpist (we only had 1harpist my last semester) more beneficial than something to burst my bubble. That also could be because my high school was insanely competitive and a bit...interesting when it came to seating auditions and how they functioned throughout the year (you could get your seat taken from you at literally any moment, which isn't even how regular ensembles work). Nonetheless, in Music school, depending on who you're with, those people in your studio can be the best people to be around because of (in my case) their willingness to give out information and tips on improvement (aka building you up while giving good criticism). Some of the top people in my studio were some of the kindest people I knew while in university. Yes ensemble auditions are never not going to be stressful, but I never felt I was a failure or less than anyone at the end of the day because both professors and my peers were encouraging and gave criticism in a way that made me want to keep going. I guess what I'm trying to say is I ended looking up everyone who was better than me lol.

  • @CertifiedMoth

As a fine arts student going into my second year, the description of the first year studies sounds pretty similar to mine, just that ours was obviously WAYYY chiller bc we weren't preparing for a portfolio! Not so many crazy deadlines lol. We also didn't have to buy so many art supplies that never get used because materials and projects were more open ended and self directed (jokes on me now I have to buy so many tubes of golden acrylics and there's no one to blame but myself)
It's so funny, I also discovered the school through lavendertowne when i was in jr high, I was sooo sure I was gonna take design up until the point I actually applied to the school
The only hint of the rivalry I ever saw were some posters out up telling people to wear a colour to show whether they were design or fine arts, sorta jokingly talking about bringing the rivalry back

Hii! I also graduated from AUArts this year but I was a transfer student from a different college/uni and boyyy was I not prepared for AUArts hahah Idk if it'll help other people thinking about it but here's my experience as a transfer student.
I was a painting major (but I took the animation classes as an elective...i just forgot to declare my minor oops) and my previous school I wasn't really expected to do much self directed stuff (well 2nd year there kinda touched on it but we still had prompts given) so being expected to come up with one single concept was a pain in the butt. (esp bc I like doing various things) Though I *kinda* think having that 2 years at an art school helped my chances getting INTO the school but obviously not everyone can just go to one school with an art program and then transfer into another school.
Unfortunately I didn't watch any videos about Art School before applying anywhere (tho my hs art teacher was always talking about it and willing to help those wanting to apply, I just took a year and a half off after graduating high school) so I was basically going in blind and KINDA preferred my teachers at my first uni to the teachers at AUArts (painting teachers there are pretty tough i swear- I had one who would nitpick using a STORE BOUGHT canvas even if it was one of the expensive ones...he basically implied he wanted/preferred if everyone make their own every time. I didn't like him but others do so it just depends on the person) but honestly the Animation teachers I had were pretty chill for the most part...I was just kind of a huge procrastinator and wasn't the type to ask for help, so they probably didn't have a good impression of me lmao. Also as a Fine Art student who was in design courses as electives, I agree, I never noticed any 'feud' between us, nor any judgement for being a painting major in an animation/design class (thank god, though every time I saw a show from like Illustration or Character Design in the Main Mall I was lowkey like 'damn why didn't I apply for that??')
Sorry for the mini essay haha I came across this video and was like 'hey i graduated this year too!' and also was curious about what others thought. then I realized I knew you from some classes so hi! even though you may not know me bc of my ambiguous name hahah (we had a couple animation classes together though, I always loved your art and outfits

I am studying digital art at a literal military college and the arts program provides all software required. It's actually required in the curriculum for students to learn and be fluent in adobe programs, maya, etc because that's what companies are looking for. It's insane that real art schools cost so much to attend yet don't even teach students how to use the programs that will be used in their careers smh
They even supply pretty much all the supplies you need for intro classes, I spent some money but it was only because I wanted to use specific materials. It was never a requirement and I definitely could've made an A in all of the beginner classes by spending little to no money at all.

AUARTS was actually one of the options I was given after graduating high school as well as finishing upgrading marks, unfortunately despite living in the same province, it was almost 3 hours away from my home which is not an ideal situation to be traveling back and forth through long distances so I end up choosing a polytechnic education near where I am. Funny how you mention dabbling with non-artists as an artist yourself towards the end of the video. When I got to lazy to continue art and decided to tend to my career in tech, I actually got even less motivated to continue art due to the toxic sludge that would come my way at the mere mention of AI. Then again, my university restricts majors and I got dumped into humanities’ philosophy, so it sucks to be me. I guess they just don’t like me being a jack of all trades. 😢

Is it okay If I asked if you have a plan, or got a better plan on what to do now that you've gratuated?
I'm technically in an artschool as well, but I really feel like nothing I made so far is really good enough to use in a future Portfolio, and all my breakdowns have been pretty shitty as well (´ . .̫ . `)
Sorry that I'm being a downer, I just feel like maybe it could be helping to hear.

@@Ammiteur9 I've always wanted to make products and merchandise so thats what I focused on a lot of in my final years at art school but even now, as such a recent grad, it's hard to tell where this degree will take me.
The only advice I can give you is to try and turn every assignment you can into something that caters to your specific artistic interests and the niche you want to fulfil. I love cute anime girls, bright colours, and fashion, so I tried really hard to express that in my art so I could create a specific artistic identity that led to a more concise body of work that I would be proud of.
Hopefully that helps? It's hard to give advice about the post grad life when I'm very much in the process of trying to figure it out for myself HAHA

@@NerdyArty Thank you so much! I think that could actually help me a lot someday.
Like, the art I'm studying is animation, so I sadly don't think I can focus on the things you mentioned, but your interests are really similar to mine, so maybe if my path doesn't work out, there is still another I could take.
