    Both of those men saw James was somehow suffering from a lack of a father figure wanted to guide him. They probably realize a strong male role model is very important for a boy. I don't necessarily mean a "dad" but any good man who can help a boy through a rough patch.

      J Mack This is, after all, a reality show, same as Big Brother but with the Amish, and what would a reality show be without some discord. Get real! It’s Siana’s job! You have one girl majoring in music/theater. One girl who is a radio DJ, and one girl who is a professional singer who is trying to find herself and reconcile her religious beliefs along with two guys who admit they don’t want to work and a college student. This is not Britain’s best, this is a group of reality actors. Why are these modern Amish participating? They are witnessing. Why am I watching? Because I am so curious about this peaceful God-fearing family loving culture-the Amish.

      I get the impression she did not know herself at all before the trip. She was more easily shaped to fit in with the families because her identity is not well formed before. Siana seems to know her own values and has worked hard to challenge stereotypes and subvert expectations before the trip, so she was much less fluid in her identity and she couldn't fit in as well.

      Yeah, it's funny how the SJW girls likes to speak about politics and open mindedness in the introduction scenes, while Charlotte was speaking about shopping and how her mom did everything for her, and still Charlotte comes of many times more open minded when faced with challenges far from her usual life, while the others struggle a lot to decide what they feel or how they feel about every little aspect of this new environment rather than just suck it in and embrace it for what it is.

      Being open minded doesn't mean you have to accept everything, especially if you feel strongly about something being wrong.
      If you're open minded to hear peoples opinions, you can still absoluteely say "that is wrong, I dont agree with that" "I dont agree with how they raise their dogs" or whatever it is.

    • @michaelcaplin8969
      @michaelcaplin8969 6 лет назад +11

      I don't know. Someone who is truly open minded probably won't respond in that way. They will say something along the lines of ''that does not fit with my indoctrinated views. My views and your views are certainly different, so maybe the truth lies somewhere in between the two. I'll sleep on it tonight and see if anything has changed in the morning''. This is because an open minded person is always open to changing their views if needed, and won't cut off any chance of learning something new by saying ''that is wrong, I don't agree with that''.

    J H I think the problem with Siana is that for all that she pushes feminism, strength, individualism and education, she sadly fails to see these very characteristics in the Amish women. They are not relying on superficial things to express themselves but rather on genuine and honest character... things that actually mean something. The strength these women have is amazing and the support they give to each other is hardly seen in today's world. Its ok to question but one needs to respect at the same time in doing so which she is not. This was a wonderful adventure and learning experience and she very quickly chose to judge and frown upon it rather than to increase her own intellectual quest and take something valuable from it.
    Why go into this with a closed mind? The entire point of something like this is to be open and learn and to respectfully embrace other's lifestyles and expand your horizons. I feel of all the visitors, she took the least from this experience because of her own narrow mindedness and judgement and that is so sad.

      I feel like she did it for content for her radio show and blogs. For someone who is apparently a freedom fighter she really does judge these women and make it seem like domestic work is *beneath her*.. but domestic work is necessary for nurturing and building strong families which make for good communities and so on and so forth. There is honor in domestic work.
      She should respect these women just as much as she would respect a feminist leader.

    It's sad and hypocritical that Siana, in all her want for female strength and individuality, fails to see the strength of the women in these communities and how supportive they are of one another. Instead she is caught up in believing her individuality and expression comes from the superficial things in her life.

    One part that has really touched me is the keeping of yourself pure before marriage so that you will have "no regrets". I was a teenager during the 70's sexual revolution and was very promiscuous. I suffered all the ills of illicit sexual relationships- stds, abortion, pregnancy out of wedlock, divorce after a ten year marriage, raising two children as a single parent to name a few! I am 63 yrs old now and even tho I have a relationship with Jesus, there is pain in my heart due to regrets. Regrets dim your ability to feel joy. I would say the amish way of protecting their young people is totally righteous and good. I am glad that God has given American society a witness of a righteous community and lifestyle that brings NO REGRETS. Praise be to Jesus!

      Even though I haven't went through that many things as You mentioned I truly understand what You mean by: Regret dims your ability to feel joy. Unfortunately I experienced what does it mean... Even through I'm believer since 2013 I don't feel joy as I felt it before.
      And this what that Amish woman said is really true. That when we reach a decision that is according to God's will then He gives us peace in our heart. Otherwise we will feel fear if we make a decision that is not God's will...

      I was thinking about that too and still agree. The only thing I could think of (in way of reason, not explanation), is that the producers likely told them to voice their opinions and differences whenever possible (to help give context to the viewers). Not that it was set-up or meant to fan flames, I just think they may have encouraged the girls to explain how each thing was different than their own experience. And because of some understandable immaturity, the girls didn't always know how to vocalize that without seeming judgmental or ungrateful.

    • @dgerdi
      @dgerdi 9 лет назад +3

      Tashie Barlow If you really want to live amish - you can do it. Some modern kind of amish. But the key is to study the bible and turn your face to god. You can get rid of alkohol, tabak, sweets, chips etc, useless luxury. You can do a lot of things for charity. But it is hard in this world. There is a reason, why the amish live beside the community of the modern world. The devil and temptation is out there. Everytime. everywhere. They are hiding in some kind of perspective, but we normal christian people are living face to face with temptation. That does not mean, that we can´t do it if we want to. There is a reason, why we are not born as amish. We have to find our own way.

    • @dgerdi
      @dgerdi 9 лет назад +5

      Tashie Barlow Dear Friend. I gratulate you to your clean life. This is a real archivement in times like these and in a world like these. Maybe I can help you a little. The Amish were very close to the Mennonites, so to the Hutteries. They all are baptist churches more or less in the tradition of Martin Luther. They all focus intensly on the life and the work of Jesus. (Which is MOST important for every christian). It seems like you are right and there are no amish in Australia/New Zealand. But there are Mennonites and some other kinds of baptist churches. Here is one Link to the Mennonites: www.anabaptist.asn.au/
      And here another link to other Baptist churches: www.baptist.org.nz/
      Maybe, this is not exactly, what you look for but listen. The core of the amish is the faith in God, his Son Jesus and the holy Ghost. There is no miracle, no wonder hiding in the barn. Through their communities they have it a little easier in some kind, but generaly god wants us to change this world to a better place. So we have to take our place in this world. The bible says it in slightly different words but: "See I send you as sheep right among wolfes."
      Hiding from the wolfes is maybe a way to keep faith. But it is not the only way to do so.
      You asked for support. I suppose you will find those under the links I send you in this message. All good for you. I hope, that you will get any support of any kind you need.

Is she supposed to be comfortable with people telling her she'll go to hell? I mean, respect is important but that was really creepy, and it's not unique to the Amish, it's honestly harmful. I don't blame them for their attitude, they have their beliefs which they can't do a lot about, but if you're an honest person and you don't feel God in any way there's no other way to react to people like that, you just tell them how you feel and you let them tell you God disapproves and you'll go to hell, I've been through many that kind of conversation after I stepped away from Christianity.

Respectfulness , taking care, loving, virginity, and being supportive.Those qualities are necessary for girls to marry in my culture and it’s hard to find such women nowadays cos they have already done everything when they’re teenagers. Keeping cows is a nightmare and so-oh hard job. This is why I keep bees. Bees smell fantastic, honey is delicious, bees wake up at dawn and stop working after a sunset while a beekeeper is busy to sleep or to relax. Inside the hive they are hanging on each other and sweating with wax. I never use any protection from bees and rarely get stung. Despite sometimes I am all hands inside the hive and pushing bees gently away to see what is with combs or removing combs with honey. My role is to manage them wisely and to rob excess of honey from them. Actually, it is a hobby. I have only 10 beehives. But enough to enjoy it. We keep birds too - chicken, geese, ducks. And we have about 10 hectare of farming land in Thailand. I like Amish people so much but I would not stop using electrical pumps, instruments, lights, as well as tractors, cars and motorcycles. Simple life is great but making life easier is not a sin. I am PhD in physics since 1983, BTW. Enjoyed science, made large number of publications too and do it on my own till now.

      In all seriousness that chicken house, for a slightly larger-scale one, was very good. It wasn't nearly as dirty or overcrowded as the mass-production ones. She doesn't know what she's talking about. That whole act was just one more way for her to look down ono how these people live and what they do.

    A lot of people are commenting that they don't allow themselves to be on Video or photographed. Not completely true. It depends on if they're running under Old Order or New Order leaders/Bishops. The Bishops are the ones who make the rules. They just use the Ordernung as a guideline as to stay humble and not become infatuated with the sometimes disorderly Englischer world. to keep their families pure-hearted and minded 👏💜 💯 which i think is a beautiful thing. :)

    I will pray for you Charlotte! You are a beautiful woman inside and outside. I love how you open yourself for more things than just faith. Like how you see your role in your family back home.
    I started believing in God when I was about 12, after being brought up agnostic. But I really found my faith when I went to Taizé for the first time.
    Meeting other young people from all over the world and the simplicity of the daily life and the prayers in the huge church (the services are called prayers, because there is no preaching, just beautiful singing, a Bible reading, a spoken prayer, intercession and a 5 minute very impressive silence), sitting on the ground with thousands of other young people, it really made me feel humple and it made me connect to God in my way.
    I can really recommend young people to spend a week on that beautiful hill there in France in summer. Doesn't matter if you believe or not or from which church or religion (even Muslims and Jews come, as well as atheists, because it's fun to connect with new people from all over the world and get into discussions in your reflection group and work together).
    The stay there just costs €56,- for a week for people from 1st world countries, so you just need to pay your travelling costs besides that. There are coach services for every European country, that keep the costs very low. And meeting others already starts on the coach. You can bring your own tent or sleep I a barrack. Price for both is the same.
    Anyone interested can go to www.taize.fr/en, or go to www.taize.fr and choose your own language for the website. For an impression of Taizé, watch this video: ruclips.net/video/7fg-C2OSsgE/видео.html
    In all 18 years I've been going to Taizé, I never met someone who regretted coming there. I lived in Taizé for a year, so I met a lot of people there over the years and made lifetime friendships. The best person I met there is my husband😊

    Very eye opening and sad in many ways. If we in the "modern" industrialized world think we are providing a culture to protect and nourish our children we are sadly wrong. Childhood and the growing up years should be about simple but worthwhile life practices..., like learning various skills, how to focus and complete projects and tasks, being sincerely appreciative of what they have by being a part of the provision of it and introducing them consistently but gently to the concept of spirituality...the appreciation of mother natures wonders and the idea that there is a spiritual energy that is trusting and exists to guide our moral compass so the World doesn't overwhelm us. All that is near impossible in a superficial world, moving at high speed with developing minds and souls heavily introduced to complex topics, like feminism , politics, adult issues, pornography, sex, rap music anti-social lyrics. We have allowed an environment where 16 and 17 yr olds are set up to be acting and understanding life as a 30 year old..., without even an ounce of natural evolving maturity for the body and soul. The human brain is not completely developed until age 25!
