personally if i hated my life in the amish community and i hated the people in it, i wouldn't want to be buried or associated with them. obviously the way that the shunned dead get treated is absolutely horrible, yet it's almost comforting to know that eli's father and the other man's final resting place is removed from the rest of the dead in the cemetery. it makes people remember who they were and why they did what they did, which honestly could inspire more people to reflect of the amish community and why it would lead someone to taking their life. idk if this makes sense and this is just my opinion

      Trick to have good luck
      You need
      1 banana
      Metal Nails
      a black marker
Step 1 on the banana write the name of luz González Montiel (ángel of good luck)
Step 2 drive the nails into the banana
Step 3 bury the banana in a place with earth where they cannot dig it up
Step 4 bury the banana on the ground and leave it there forever

Eli’s story is so sad and shows the abuse that can be hidden in such a closed environment. That being said, it sounds like he grew up in pretty strict Amish community. I was Amish for 16 years of my life and my experiences were mostly all good and healthy. The Amish culture is so nuanced and each church has slightly different rules, so it is very hard to lump them all together. Most Amish people live in a healthy loving environment, and that’s why we don’t see hundreds leaving the church daily.

I grew up with Amish people. The women are mistreated. I once knew a woman who had the longest hair I had ever seen, I told her how amazing I thought it was and she told me how she wasn’t allowed to cut it or she would be punished. I saw Amish people differently. But there were so many amazing Amish people, the Amish kids I used to play with were some of the nicest I’ve ever met.

It's so upsetting to hear so many stories about loved ones having to live up to certain expectations, and then get ostracised later on when they don't conform to those standards. These stories are often forgotten, and it's important our generation learns about them. I had heard about the Amish community ages ago, but have forgotten ever since. These small details shape the next generation, and we must learn from these mistakes.

The Amish community is full of rape, incest, beating one year old infants, etc. Drug dealers, thieves get punished more than pedophiles in the Amish communities do. Victims told me stories of inappropriate touching, groping, fondling, exposure to genitals, digital penetration, coerced oral sex, anal sex, and rape, all at the hands of their own family members, neighbors, and church leaders.
Both parties have to go before the church, and confess about what happened and the victim has to ask the male perpetrator for forgiveness for having tempted him. It’s the woman’s fault. The women are also warned not to report to police, to outside authorities. If they do, they are going to be ex-communicated by the church.”

I was in Plymouth, Massachusetts on a road trip and staying in this hotel. My family and I were by the pool and this Amish guy came over and sat with us and this other group and they started talking and he told us how his ex wife’s father was the leader of a cult that shaved off Amish’s beards. He told us how he had to take his two daughters (who were at the pool) away from his wife. I think you can see the whole story online somewhere but the thing that surprised me was that this guy had a flip phone and to get there he had this older couple drive them around on a vacation. Also in Plymouth there is a deli called “The Yellow Deli” and it is run by a cult called the “Twelve Tribes” it’s very interesting stuff.

I want to say, I'm really sorry that elie went through that. And I'm really proud of him. But I'm very sorry that his father took his life, and I'm really sorry that he had such a restricted life, and had to watch his mother go through that at a young age. But honestly I'm really proud that he's still here, and trys to stay so positive about it.

i truly loved it ben 😭 it's nice to see the work u put into ur documentaries!! it's very inspiring 💛 as a child, i used to watch this cartoon (arthur) where they had an episode abt the amish, the characters basically went on a school trip to learn abt them and one of them felt rlly inspired by the way the amish lived that he wanted to try it out for himself. i didn't know there were dark sides to this group beyond the idea of just living simply. however, i'm glad that there are lots of Amish people who truly love the way they live and just wish to share their lifestyle with others without imposing it upon them. 💛

I'm glad Eli escaped from the toxic place he has been raised in. It was a brave thing of him to do. And his father's death was pretty sad like I would literally stay as far away from a community that shunned me because of my own decisions and just not treating my father with the respect he deserves
I hope Eli lives a happier life, thanks for showing us his story, Ben

wow ben, i can see this took some hard work. i saw on ur instagram you had a trailer for this and it was months in the making. thank you for sharing this educating video with us! usually most of your videos are all fun and memes but this one was different and i admire it! something that i kinda noticed is that some of the amish groups are sort of dystopian. and when eli was talking about the elders and of the church and how you couldn't say love, it remind me of "The Giver" by louis lowry bc they have a house of elders and people in that story tell you to watch your precision of language when using the word "love". it's a sort of unrelated but i thought i'd share that because it's smth i noticed. other than that, have a good day :)

I used to live at my grandparents house. Down there in mattoon, there is slot of Amish people and my grandma frequently buys goods from there stores, a few of them even went to my school. The Amish never really talked to us except when we buy goods from there store. I never tried to start a conversation with them because they always seemed pretty reserved, and me being a trans man, they always seemed almost fearful of me.

i live a few hours away from amish country. my moms cousins grew up in amish country. (she’s not amish, she just lived around amish country) she grew up and hung it with some amish kids. she always said they were just like regular kids. they played ball and goofed around just like her. i still have family who live in amish country, family who i visit yearly. whenever i go up there, it’s always an interesting experience! i have met a lot of very nice people! (and seen some questionable things, like a few kids smoking 💀)

I grew up in Dutch, Mennonite, Jehovah's witnesses, and Amish country since i live in a area that's town, city, and country all at the same time. I've seen many sketchy places in my time due to the fact the only 2 farmers markets, 2 of my friends are friends with them since they own a farm and any smaller country shops in the area are owned by one of the above. I always found them so interesting since i never got the chance to really know them but overall they were such sweet people with not so sweet situations.
