  • 1957 Canadian Car and Foundry. Model CD-52-TC Brill. (edit model CD-52A was incorrect)
BC Electric, Vancouver B.C. Owned by the Transit Museum Society.
One of two of the only known running CD-52-TC buses.
Engine: AEC AH-690 Horizontal underfloor engine.
Transmission: Spicer Torque Converter 2 speed. Top speed 35 MPH. The bus is going out for a test drive and refueling. This is the first time this bus has been out in the past year since having it's various coolant and heater lines replaced. There were still some issues with air in the system.
We started from Marine and Roseberry and went along Marine Way, across the Queensborough Bridge, along Hwy 91A, and finally to our destination at Annacis Island for fuel. We did have an overheat light come on. After our engine cooled down a bit we headed back to the garage.
Our Driver was Harry Vagg. This was his final voyage driving a bus before his passing at the end of 2019. As a founding member of the society he is greatly missed.

I drove for church in what I believe was a 1948 40 foot Brill that was an old Greyhound. It had a HallScott Pancake 6 under the floor with 4 speed. 24mph up hills at full throttle and got 3mpg on a 100gal tank of gasoline. Bakersfield to Sacramento on a full tank! Reverse was 1st or 2nd gear, then push a button on the wall by the drivers seat, let the clutch out and hope for the best.

Sounds like a Brill IC-41. I read an article about the Greyhound buses that a GM Silverside PD-4151 would leave 15 minutes earlier than the IC-41 with the Hall Scott, and the IC-41 would catch and pass the GM Silverside on the freeway. The Hall Scott was not great off the line, but was good on the freeway.

I never knew this video was out. Great to go on a proper ride.
I have three of those blue and red AEC round badges you see on the rocker cover at the beginning. They were also attached to the wheel hubs of AEC vehicles.
Adelaide in Australia ran about 290 rear engine AEC Swifts built between 1970 and 1973 for the MTT and they had the same engine together with a ZF 2hp500 two speed automatic sounding similar to this, but a bit louder. This one's quite muffled.
Later in 1978, they took delivery of a further 63 760 powered versions. They had to be heard to be believed!
    Very sporty aggressive engine note.

There are only two of these buses left with this engine. The transmission is a spicer two speed but I don’t know the model. Top speed is 35 MPH / 60 KM if you are lucky. The bus was retired in 1978.

I meant to get back to this earlier. Another video has the sister bus 3404 running without it’s muffler. It had to be removed to be able to loaded onto a landol trailer. Someone installed the muffler too low. When Dad drive it out to the trailer he floored it to see how loud it would be.

AEC made a smaller engine about 8 litres (505) and once I heard one start up with the exhaust completely detached. It sounded awful when idling bit when revved up a bit at a steady 1500rpm it was sublime!

WOW There are transfers still there & I haven't seen a fair box in many many years :D I had a few dreams over the years where my city decided to put back into service a few CCF BRILLS for nostalgia reasons. I keep expecting to see these buses but NOPE Not happening lol I remembered them being a bit more cramped inside but I guess I was wrong, I also forgot what these buses sounded like except the air brakes. I still remember those. I remember very well entering the fleet yard in my community with my brother to see if we could start one of them & I Sure did get it started, but I think it was in the repair section cause that bus blew some nasty black smoke. I couldnt find the gears so I turned it off & got out & left the yard I was only 7 years old back then maybe 6 not sure.
    Loved the video. Thanks :)

michael bressette those transfers are just for show. They are from 2001 Translink. The farebox is a Grant Money Meter last used in the mid 70’s. I am still working on a few to get them all working.

Liked how in this video, you gave viewers a good look at the BC Electric Railway logo. Don't know about everybody else, but I find it strange to see regular internal combustion engine motor buses badged with streetcar system names (although it makes sense to see electric trolley buses labelled like this).

    • @matthewsvideos8235

BC Electric was formed before viable internal combustion engined buses existed. Back when streetcars ruled the transportation scene. Buses started showing up in the 1930’s and in very large numbers after WW2 ended. The largest change was between 1947 and 1954 when over 300 Brill electric trolley buses were purchased. A number of gasoline Brills and Fageols were also purchased. These later 1957 Brills were the first diesel buses for the city in an evolving transit industry. The logo is the last one for BC Electric before ownership changed and everything became BC Hydro in 1961.

Wow, the video was posted to RUclips on May the 26th 2018 and in the video description it is stated that the old man who drove the bus to the Annacis Island fuel pit and back to the garage passed into the afterlife sometime at the end of 2019. A bit of a back and forth time travel between the posting of the video and the passing away of the driver, right?
Anywho, cool vintage buss ! A bit underpowered and very slow at max 35 Mi/h even for the 1950s, but nevertheless it contained a pice of tech which was borrowed from the Büssing AG established in 1903 (defunct in 1971) in Germany and the first to pioneer the horizontal unterflurmotor (underfloor engine) in 1936, the horizontal 11 liter six cylinder inline naturally aspirated diesel in both, busses and trucks which produced 192 DIN-hp of power (about 215 bhp ? / not sure of the conversion)
The Büssing busses and trucks, even the 1950s had a bit more power and the engine was coupled to a range of 4 and 5 manual transmissions coupled to two speed rear ends, and by the late ‘60s they used a “ZF / M.A.N” truck 6 speed (12 speed if it had the “GV” 1/2 gear splitter box added) manual transmission with the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gears fully synchronized which had a gear selector which could reverse the order of gear selection in case the engine and transmission was installed behind the drive axle in some busses the stick in the cab would function normal with the low and first gears left close to the driver and the higher gears gradually ordered towards the right side. The hub reduction two speed drive axles were made the same: normal rotation in trucks and reversed rotation in the rear mount engine busses.
In 1971 M.A.N AG purchased Büssing and started producing the M.A.N Büssing line of busses and trucks with the underfloor engine and then they used an improved M.A.N transmission of Crawler L/H + 3 L/H range change transmissions or the German version of the Fuller non synchro transmission very much like the American Eaton-Fuller. By the 1980s they switched to the 16 speed ZF synchronized manual transmissions behind the six inline 11 liter underfloor turbocharged 331 hp and by mid ‘80s the same engine but raised at 361 hp by adding an intercooler to this M.A.N Büssing diesel. These were the very M.A.N regular vertical engine “long block” without the oil pan which were laid horizontally and equipped with special oil pans plus some extra oil transfer pumps added and a slightly modified bull gear housing, modified intake and exhaust manifolds and modified engine mounts plus modified mountings of few other accessorial components like air compressors, alternators, etc. the cooling ducts took the cooling fluid from the mid-truck underfloor mounted engine to a radiator mounted at the front of the truck (or at the side of the buss) which had an electric fan controlled by an electric thermostat.

They were quite common as automatics in many buses in North America. Started being used not long after World War 2 ended and some aging buses had them until the late 1990's. Spicer and the V-Drive Allison were some of the most prominent manufacturers. By the late 70's the three speed or more automatics were becoming more common in city buses. Now six speed automatics are common.

    • @matthewsvideos8235
      @matthewsvideos8235  11 месяцев назад

@@americanrambler4972 I think it’s the gearing, and yes they were terrible. The Fageol Twin Coaches could do 50. The problem with Vancouver is that it has a wide variety of terrains. Some routes are hilly while others relatively flat. 35MPH was enough for the city since the speed limit was generally 30 MPH before the metric system. The transit company specified gear ratios in bus orders until the mid 80’s. Some GM Newlooks had the highway gears and were dogs trying to get out of town to the suburban runs. Most of the others had the city gearing only good for 45 - 50 MPH with a two speed transmission.

@@matthewsvideos8235 I am familiar with Vancouver and it’s terrain varying from delta flat to mountain ski slope steep. It’s an interesting city with a smorgasbord of attractions to see and visit. I myself live in the other Vancouver which had the Hudson’s bay Fort Vancouver. It’s sight is now a park with some of the fort reconstructed on the original building foundations. I alway found the road network in your Vancouver BC difficult to figure out how to get from one place to another. And the road speeds quite slow. So I understand the reasoning for the low speed of the buses like this one. Did that low gearing allow those old buses get moving easily with minimal effort? And I am also familiar with the Seattle new look buses and their slow acceleration and difficulty climbing steep hills. Lots of noise and smoke for minimal movement. The electric trolly busses were far superior on the in City steep grades and routes. Just not a fan of the ugly overhead wires. I am hopping the coming generation of battery electric city buses will be a massive improvement over the longer range diesel buses and the electric trolly buses forest of overhead wires.

Not that you could hear much over the engine at high RPM. Fortunately this bus is equipped with an air ride suspension. 1957 was the first order of buses in Vancouver that had this suspension. They did have their problems with ride leveling as they were moving. A later improvement added to these buses was an alteration to the leveling system. When starting from a stop you could hear a solenoid locking the air leveling valve front to rear to keep the bus level during acceleration. It was smoother than the leaf spring equipped Brill trolleys that are in our collection.

These had a spicer two speed automatic. Torque converter and direct. Once you get up to speed you would lift off the throttle and then it would shift into direct and you would be back on the throttle. GM had a power shift with their Alison transmissions that you did not need to lift the throttle to shift.
This bus does have a problem with the shifting into the high gear. Once you get to the shift speed, the driver has to use a toggle switch on the left panel to trigger the shift. You had to remember to use that toggle again when slowing. The other bus 3404 does not have this problem.
