We don't really call it the "Alaska Highway" until you get to either Dawson Creek (Mile Zero of the original Alaska highway route) or Kitwanga (south-end of the Cassiar Highway route) going north.
The highways south of those starting-points (all the way down to the 49th parallel) are really just regular BC highways, that serve the people of BC, as well as those wonderful tourists and through-travelers.
There, I feel better now. I do realize that for any USofA person heading from the Lower-58 up to Alaska, ANY highway in Canada is "the Alaska highway." (all in good fun, eh)

I was thinking the same thing as I am 90 miles east of Dawson Creek ( obviously in Alberta ) and there is only one true Alaska Highway and that is from Dawson Creek. Only it was not called that years back as it was the ALCAN highway and was anything but a paved highway !. It was built before my time but my dad remembered it all well from his perspective working this farm and small lumber mills in this area having their product hauled to Dawson to build structures for that staging area and on and on it went. All done for military purposes back then, lots has changed since that era. I've been on the Cassiar as well during the summer, very nice scenic drive as was the drive out to Telegraph Creek.

The Cassiar experience was back in 2006, I drove up to Whitehorse on the Alaska Highway, then Dawson City ( that is where I ran into the prior owner of the towing company in Deese lake while watching dancing girls ... LOL, anyway he said be sure to go to Telegraph Creek if I take the Cassiar on the way back home ) , as my trip was far from over at that point as I went over the top of the world highway, over to Tok, then Fairbanks, then up the Dalton past the arctic circle and decided to turn around there as I was having some accessory bearing noises as otherwise I would have gone up to Prudhoe bay, down to Denali, Anchorage, Homer, back around north east of Anchorage to meet up with the Alaska highway, Whitehorse, over to Skagway, then back to Watson lake to fuel up ( this guys BIG mistake ) , then south on the Cassiar and fueled up twice at Deese Lake as per doing the Telegraph road. I lucked out and was nice weather doing the Telegraph and back then the old town had not been burned down like I understand some of it is now. As you may know there is a 20 percent grade and its gravel and due to what is at the other end I would only recommend a typical passenger vehicle and preferably a 4x4 suv or pickup and not to go if its all muddy or raining, you wouldn't get the fantastic views. If you are pulling an rv trailer there is camping by Deese lake I believe and leave it there. Its not a fast road and there were horses blocking the road part way along, all part of the entertainment. Full fuel before you strike out down that road and yes the Petro Canada in Deese lake is a captured market but its far better than being stranded. Oh and yes I did go over to Stewart/Hyder and then up to see the glacier and to the bitter end of that road, middle of summer and it was pretty cool up there and still snow around.

Change the !lights to LED ,they only use a fraction of the power as a incandescent.
Nice video man thanks. Maybe pickup a jump pack to keep in cab, got a dewalt I got for just over $100 and has air and two usb ports which come in handy, keep it charged with just a 200 watt inverter plugged into cigarette lighter. 👍

Just found your channel. Interesting content. New subscriber. Big Ford guy, so love the truck. 2 quick things. 1; Lithium power bank charger. Either NOCO GB 150, or GBX 155. I have the 150 and it’ll start my 6.0 no problem. 2nd thing. Put a starter from 6.7 on. Cranks twice as fast and makes cold starting so much better. Takes a little bit of work(change the Bendex cone, and need a bolt and a sleeve) but we’ll worth it.

Timmy, my Canadian dad taught me to turn everything off when starting a car in the winter. No open door, no lights, no heat, nothing. It's a good habit to have. Happy Trails!
I'm from TX and we don't see winters at all like so many others. But my uncle was a farmer/rancher in the middle of nowhere Kansas. They use to get bad winters. When I was at an age to start driving first thing my uncle taught me was that same thing. I've been in the habit of everything turned off before I even stop turn the car off. So everytime I start it nothing is pulling extra on the battery/alternator.

Newer cars do that automatically. You will notice radios, fan motor and lights turning off when the starter motor cranks the engine. It's a good idea to do that in older vehicles

$11 diesel beats walking thru the snow! Lol! While desert driving you never pass up a chance at gas, firewood, or ice!

Honestly its stupid. He's one of the few Alaskans that's dumb enough to travel this in the winter. When traveling to Ak pay attention to how dumb locals are. It's like the whole state is stuck in 8th grade stupidity.

You may want to check the quality of your starting batteries. Assuming there was a 1/2 amp draw on that light, and say it was running for 8 hours, that's only 4 AH depleted from the battery.

I went to Alaska for the first time this year and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to stay up there but hoping to move up there full time in a couple years.

We've driven up and down the highways from Calif to Hope Alaska several times. Camped along the way, drove our Toyota Deluxe Tundra. Had a cabin in Hope we worked on for 7 seasons. From no electric, no water to complete cabin with everything we needed plus bath house and had washer and dryer, and toilet inside cabin with bathtub. This cabin had more than most people in Hope have. We loved it. We were living on Maui and spent most of our Spring and Summers there working for 7 years. A great tiny house....before they were popular.

Visited Hope last year, met some friends there and had a great supper of Halibut and chips at the Seaview. Overnight at the Porcupine campground just outside of town. Pretty little town.

Man you got your self a good truck there brother. I absolutely love the 7.3l the only diesel truck id ever own, ive had 2 and both were more than bullet proof the first one had 1.2 million on her when i sold it, plow truck from the day it drove off the lot never gave me any major issues original motor and transmission just amazing trucks and you got a GREAT one im jealous.
I used to drive a lot on winter roads with a large truck camper and only 2WD. I was always glad for the extra traction from all that weight on the rear wheels but, of course, that doesn't help one stop any quicker! :)

I agree, would be interesting to hear an alaska driving instructors take on it.
Those particular trucks are tanks in the snow/ice…..the 5 speed even better. I would say one of the most stable vehicles I have ever driven in nasty conditions, and that was empty payload. Then add the weight of the rear cabin and that thing would be a real bull.

Drove the Cassiar south to Stewart/Hyder last June. A beautiful drive in the summer. I can't imagine doing it on a winter night.

Mate do yourself a favour and always fill your tank up there when you’ve got a chance. No matter what. You’ll only do that once after things go wrong. Poor gamble. Huge consequences not worth it. Also when you got a full head of fuel in the tank it’s just easier on an older pump. Always best to run on the top half a tank. Sorry but gotta let you know that brother.

I'm always topping off when I can. That allows me to dollar cost average my fuel costs and lower the impact of bad fuel when that occurs. But damn, 11 bucks a gallon 🤯

We took the Cassiar in 2004 and had a breakdown about 50 miles south of Dease Lake. We were saved by the folks at the British Columbia Highway Camp just a few miles up the road. Absolute lifesavers.

Get a battery charger with a quick start option … I’ve used three times in 8 years on my ford e350 econoline rv with a gen
