Mysterious G String Buzz...? On my 2011 Epiphone DOT ES-335 Guitar

- This is my 2011 Epiphone and I did complete fret job, nut replacement, installed locking tuners and a complete set-up several months ago. Recently, I have noticed string buzz on the open G string - after checking it over, seems like the break angle off the Tusq nut needed to be increased... relatively simple fix.
Thanks for watching!

Just incredible, the difference made by your first five seconds of filing. Beautiful to watch. Thank you.
My Epi LP is also cursed by G string buzz, and has been for years. Even though I love maintaining my guitars, doing set ups, replacing worn and faulty components (eg a new bridge) what you just did in spotting and solving the problem is why you are the master! Mine will be going to a luthier, now I have seen you work.
I am glad you enjoyed the video- I hope you have subscribed to my channel? Working on guitars yourself is great fun bit sometimes you do need expert help.
Thank you, I especially notice this on my Strats, It has always really bothered me so now I know there is a fix to this "Dreaded G string Buzz"
I have the same issue with a fender strat. I added a string tree, to give it a better break angle. It’s still there. It’s so annoying!
So many variables, especially when working on nuts... I've had the same issue, and perfecting the angle did help it, I found.
I have the same set of nut files, which I bought when I started out, doing guitar stuff... I've found they leave the nut slot with a slight "v" groove, especially if you have a lot of top bone to file into...
I've given the new Music Nomad Diamond Nut Files a try, and they both polish and leave the nut slot with a nice "u" profile, which is perfect. I also like to come in afterwards, and just polish the slot up, using some fine grit sandpaper - that also seems to help.
Thanks for the video.
Have a great day.
Thanks for the feedback- I will check out the music nomad files.
@@ManotickGuitarTech - No problem.
They are excellent, and they even have different grits, between 150 and 300 grit.
Cheers.
My friends guitar had a strange buzz on one string in one position and we tried
everything (we thought)... It turned out to be the string...
An unwound G AAMOF, had a wee kink in one place, for heaven's sake!
cheers
OMG, swap out the bridge for a roller bridge ! I've used a piece of aluminum foil in the B/E string saddles at times ! Also, nylon bridge Saddles work well with none wound strings !
I have a similar problem with both the G and D strings on my acoustic. I have changed the strings, adjusted the truss rod, and used a similar procedure to your's with sandpaper. I have also noticed the buzz vanishes when I place my fingers on the bridge, right next to the string pegs, and press down. Any thoughts?
I just worked on a guitar where there was a strange buzz coming from the bridge area- turns out the end pins were not seated properly and the ball ends were "rattling". Make sure you bend the string ends and that the slot in the end pins is tight against the ball end.
when I let a chord ring out.... it starts turning into a sort of phasing sound... kind of like its own vibrato/phase effect.... Is this also to do with the nut?
Probably ly not the nut- more like a sympathetic ringing from something else that be loose or a spring. Tighten everything on the guitar.
Hi , interesting video! I'm a beginner and I'm trying to eliminate these sitar sounds as well on my high strings . Isn't a little bit strange to trim the nut instead of trying to put fill it instead? . I'm thinking that trimming the nut is causing a permanent change to it .
not taking off a lot of material - just easing the slot open a bit to allow the string to move freely.
Hello 👋 I have a fender player Stratocaster and I re stringed my guitar and my low E and G string are making this rattling noise but with my old strings I didn’t have this problem at all I don’t know what I did wrong? 😟
I have just the same problem as you on my new strat, but only on the G string, I took the guitar to service and their change the strings but the problem remains any ideas? have you solve your problem yet?
@@danielcardenas7322 no sorry I haven’t figured out a solution yet it’s bothering me so much 😅
@@danielcardenas7322 I’m planning to take it to guitar center this week I’ll let you know if they fixed it
in my acoustic guitar there is buzz in 1st string(E) till 2nd freat can you please help.
The most likely cause is the nut slot is cut too low- that will cause the string to buzz in the 1st or 2nd position
@@ManotickGuitarTech thank you bro for replying and how can i fix it
Hi, my gibson lp G string buzz only in 2nd and 3rd fret, any solution please?
High fret
I have a buzz pressing G string between 7th and 13th but seems to be coming from the bridge. Any suggestion? Thanks.
Most likely a high fret or two from the 12th to 21st fret
@@ManotickGuitarTech Thanks - I will check. The section that holds the strings (bridge end/tailpiece), does it have to be flush or should it have some given height?
Did you put that many wounds on the post to help the break angle? Great info by the way!
Yes - I wanted to lower that string angle. Thanks for watching, Kevin - I hope you have subscribed to the channel?
@@ManotickGuitarTech I saw another video where the dude said having the string wound around the post higher so the angle isn't as much, hence making it come back to it's original position better after stretching it.
Nice video BTW. I subbed. Cheers!
@@DoktorDamage thanks, Markus. It is a bit of trial and error, sometimes...
My new Gibson les paul slash just got set up, with a plek machine. And it sounds like this. Kinda annoying. I don't like it.
The plek process does not address the nut- that needs to be done by hand
What is your string set gauge? Thanks

@@ManotickGuitarTech sorry it points to your clever set of tools to measure but no info on strings. Also, would you mind telling me the code of the Tusq nut (there are several versions). Much appreciated.
My g string has a hot temper on all my guitars 😪
You might want to try a "wound" G string - the are supposed t keep their tuning stability better
Excellent. But please more volume, can hardly hear you, even with volume on full
old video and I didnt know how to get the volume level correct 😁
@@ManotickGuitarTech No problem, it must be difficult to get the volume levels right. It happens a lot on RUclips, even when my volume is on max. Still a great video. Enjoyed
@@moogdome2562 I hope you have subbed to my channel?
Very low audio.
I know - working on voiceover levels
