1994 US HPM Humanitarian Pouched Meal Review Turkey Patty MRE Meal Ready to Eat Tasting Test

- Before the HDR (Humanitarian Daily Ration), the US was using this single meal variant for humanitarian relief in scenarios where dining facilities and water were potentially in short supply. This well stored ration not only stood the test of time, but also featured some reasonably palatable components such as salted vegetable crackers that resembled some sort of shelf stable flatbread, dry & velvety sweet raisins, and a zesty lime beverage base.

Fun fact; Steve is actually 89 years old... but all the preservatives in the MRE's he eats keep him looking like he's 19 years old.

I have a nephew named Steve. When he was still a young boy I was visiting my sister and I asked "Is Stevie a picky eater ?". She turned from her work at the sink and with a hand on her hip said "That boy never said "Yuck" in his life.". Sound like anyone we know ?

This right here is what I come for! My man Steve couldn’t even contain his excitement. 😂

Never change Steve.
Raisin x5
Yeah that made me laugh
Food for thought: you can rehydrate a prune and get a plum, but soak raisins forever and they'll never be grapes. But you can make alcohol from either one.
Like fine wine
The fact that Steve was fighting not to giggle and sounded like wanted to jump up and down in excitement over the crackers made my day.

It’s great I love it, he’s such a big kid.
You've got to be impressed with the food science behind making these. For it to still be edible after 28 years is quite amazing.
A lot of it is the excellent trilaminate packaging and process similar to canning that goes into putting this stuff in before vacuum sealing. A bit of it is extra antioxidants thrown in for good measure. Plus I bet Steve here gets the very well stored ones in correct and even temperature conditions.

I started this thinking it would be really boring to watch but people on Reddit were touting the channel so I thought it would be worth at least trying. This dude's personality is 100% of the reason this channel is successful. Almost contagious positivity and enthusiasm when exploring something I can only describe as almost borderline fall asleep to content... it's just impressive and refreshing to say the least. I am now somehow interested in tasting decade old food rations because of Steve's positivity. Truly impressively unique content creation. I wish I had Steve's attitude about anything in my life. Maybe watching more of his videos will help me get there one day.
Yeah he seems like an all around really pleasant dude.

It's interesting to see what America thought would be palatable to people from other cultures. It's such a simple meal and yet all the components in it are made of foods universally liked by both adults and children across the world, with an American twist due to the turkey. It impresses me!
Plus matching religious and potential allergies.
Lots of flour pastries and a piece of turkey without a side dish. It's like leftovers from dinner or lunch. Do not be offended, I understand that the price matters, but what is there to admire? Turkey? Few people love her at all.

Look how many calories there are in cheap sugar. Sugar in jam, sugar in drink. Sugar in raisins. It looks like the main source of calories in this ration is sugar. The trick that ration manufacturers do is that they add a bag of sugar to increase the calorie content of the diet as a whole. As if upon arrival in America, immigrants if sugar.

this has easily been one of my favorite youtube channels for years now. steve, despite the content being only vaguely relevant to my typical interests, i always enjoy watching all of your videos and learning not only about both historical and contemporary knowledge regarding countries and their militaries through the MREs, but also a nice little bit of culinary facts as if also watching a cooking show. you provide such unique content with a gleeful, inquisitive, and informative perspective/attitude. not to mention, you are just an incredibly likable human, and the catchphrases you have minted always bring a smile to my, and clearly many other's, faces.
thank you so much for being a creator, steve, and providing us with these relaxing, yet enthralling videos out of the joy of your own heart. it's just so refreshing, and you deserve any success and happiness you find in this life, particularly as a result of these gifts you give us.

Ditto, not really into MREs or military stuff but it's just so wholesome when Steve opens an old MRE and finds something in good condition when you can hear the excitement in his voice. I want to love something as much as Steve loves 30 year old vegetable crackers.

Love your videos! I remember when I was an Air Force boot camp and when we did the obstacle course they served us C rations from 1949. I had beef with potatoes and it was really delicious. The age of this is reminding me of the first MRE I ate. It was like, fourteen or so years ago, we'd just moved into a new place with some roommates. We didn't have any regular food, but one of my dad's friends had some old 90's MREs. The nicest part of this channel is seeing/hearing how excited you are to eat all these different things. The way your hands shake a little and your voice gets all wavery with emotion. Your reactions makes me wish I could taste an MRE just to see what they're really like.
I don't know what it is, and i've been following Steve for eons now... but whenever he gets excited about something, it brings a smile to my face. It's probably the genuine emotion in his voice, someone who really is, 100% interested in something, and the second hand enjoyment someone gets from observing them. If i had to liken it to something... it's probably the effect one gets when they leave gifts under the tree, and then sees the giftee's happiness.

Quite relaxing and not like an asmr because what I like from Steve is that he speaks in a calm normal voice. I wasn't even in the womb when this was made and this is still edible?! I don't feel to worried about having MRE's in my emergency bags and kits anymore.
Eh. They need to be stored correctly. The MREs that are still edible 10+ years after being produced have been stored in basically ideal conditions for their entire life (a dark, cool place without any pests or bugs), and were never ever disturbed.
A good rule of thumb is to rotate your MREs every 4-5 years as needed, especially if they're getting moved around, etc.
@Ban this youtube MCWs are super clutch, but a bit inconvenient because of the water requirements. But you're right, they do store better.
