2018 Singapore 24 Hour Field Ration MRE Review Meal Ready to Eat Taste Testing

- Singapore really covers the bases for a tropical climate MRE. With a dessert that is mostly water, putrid sambal chicken, and extremely versatile biscuits, this ration pretty much has it all. Well, except for some chewing gum.

"It's not like I'm on the go, I'm just standing in this room"
I imagine Steve literally just standing in the room, silent, while waiting for the required 3-4 hours to "take it over to lunch".
T-posing the entire time.
Hello fellow member of new monarchy.
Hahaha
I imagine him just staring blankly at the wall.

It speaks volumes when a man who ate 150 year old hardtack refuses to finish an MRE.
Or 120 year old beef.

Just realized Steve is in Florida. "Florida Man hospitalized after consuming field rations from the Battle of Thermopylae"

Naw, Steve's immune system should be researched to find the cure for covid. The antibodies he has developed after all these consumings would be astounding to scientists.
Florida man is merely an idea. Any one of us can be Florida man. Rise.

@@49ersrules32 I ate an apple halfway, let it sit out for 2 days, and then finished it after it had finished browning. I must have a really good immune system.
Response from my friend who served in the singaporean national service:
"You have no idea how foul that shit tastes, we used to literally survive by JUST eating the Pocari sweat powder on its own, like maybe choking down a biscuit or two, but NO ONE ate the meal rations. One time we were doing a training exercise, and someone threw their MRE at one of the wild pigs on the island. The pig just sniffed it and ran off. EVEN THE BOARS WOULDNT EAT IT BRO"
hahaha
that's funny 😂😂
You know something is horrible when even a Wild Boar won’t go near it
They do look like bowls of sick.
I'll raise you one better... When I was doing NS in SG we used to bait rat traps in our camp with leftover commercial biscuits and camp-issue cakes (pandan / butter cakes etc). Come morning, those with the commercial biscuits usually had a trapped rat, but in my 2 years in and reservist, I NEVER saw the rats go for the army-issue cakes. It says something about the quality of the packed foods when even RATS won't eat them.
The pasta ration and sausage appetizers however wasn't that bad when I got them both in-camp and outside. The curry rice on the other hand looked, smelt and tasted like vomit...
The peanut and lotus looked like the grease in the bottom of the pan after you bake a turkey...
I'm guessing the actual meal it's approximating looks more appealing. XD
"They would be nice on the go, however, I'm not on the go...I'm just standing in this room"

Steve is like a cool older brother, those kind of people you can trust.
As a former Singaporean soldier, I must say Steve's reactions and actions especially adding water to biscuits and the dislike for the pasta is exactly what I would react and do too. But then again, we prefer to buy our own canned food and stuff and usually leave most of the rations back in bunk :)
You got to give it to Steve, he went into this blind. I remember we would pick and choose our 'favourite' rations and avoid some like the plague. The 'suay' ones will get the flavours that nobody wants.

Steve is a master of cinematography.
Man, I did two years as a conscript in the Singapore armed forces almost ten years ago and I remember this fondly. Literally cheered when he poured water into the biscuit packet because exactly that's what we all did all the time to turn the biscuits into a sort of cake.
huh legit you're supposed to add water to the biscuits? this is the first time I'm seeing this sia
@@burntgoat the biscuits are very hard, almost like hardtack. By dunking it in water or tea/coffee, you soften it and the texture is close to that of a small snack cake
@@burntgoat yea people used to do that, I also used to add some milo powder into the cocoa biscuits then add water and mix the whole thing to give it a stronger cocoa + sweet taste
i made a big mistake while outfield, ate the fruit bars and biscuits as they were, had constipation for 3 days
Was the chicken pasta as bad as Steve was experiencing? Or was it better then?
Hello Steve! Greetings from Singapore! That army biscuits that you had right there is so hard that if you throw it fast enough at an enemy soldier he might suffer from a concussion.
Isn't that the same for everything?
Yes it can penetrate a standard army ballistic helmet and a plate carrier
Weaponised snacks, very innovative but not very good for morale
The ones from the 90s (in green colour packagina) was harder bro.
@@3xj704 omg I had those when my uncle came back from his ICT. It was definitely harder than the ones above lol
Hello from Singapore, I remember trying to feed this to some stray dogs when I was out in the field for a training exercise. The dogs were hungry and even they didn't want to eat this.

Great breakfast and lunch, only to get a horrendously awful dinner.
The way he zoomed in in that fruit bar scared me idk why
Same. I thought it was some foreshadowing of nastiness.
At that point I thought that the fruit bar was evil, but later came the plot twist and it turned out that the pasta is the killer.
It was almost as if some disgusting parasite was going to burst it's way out. Very disconcerting - not just the zoom in, but the slight rotation given to it. A camera move often seen in horror movies, like in one of the 'Saw' movies, just before the reverse bear trap goes off, or that crooked lawyer is blinded and impaled. It made me pull back from the screen.
I though, for sure, it was foreshadowing
After having thought the same as everyone else, I thought maybe it was so let thet CLUNK (disply of density) sink in.
The zoom in on the fruit bar was like a important npc dialogue was about to happen LOL
I visit Singapore pretty frequently, and they have such an amazing food culture there that it really surprises me how unappetizing their rations are compared to many other countries’.
Trust me the SAF rations are pure filth. There are only a few edible options. The rest are pukes in a green bag.
@@rayh.9130 I ORDed two years ago and when I left it was still pretty shit. Only the pastas are edible and even then not all pastas are good. The only redeeming quality is that when you are hungry, everything taste good.
Had an exchange program with the US Marines and their MRE taste so much better than ours.
@@rayh.9130 Propaganda, darling. It's called propaganda.
I agree the pasta was the only thing remotably edible (also the lentils IMO). But we never had the time to heat up our food, I'd reckon they'd taste much better heated.
Tbh when your in army you don't really have the time to go and cook ur food for 2 hours so that's why they provide you with concrete biscuits and basically saying deal with it

Bro I fucking died laughing at that. Steve is the best.
I read this comment right as the video got to that part. You are reading my mind LOL
i saw that part too!
What a good joke Steve did there!
As a conscript from Singapore 30 years ago, the standard of ration has gone up exponentially since. The dog biscuit or hard tac was even harder back then. And all we had with 5 packs of those biscuits were a can of baked beans, a can of sardine and another can mysterious dissolved chicken for 48 hours.
The pasta is definitely very notorious for being one of those rations that most servicemen hated in training. Great video as always, Steve!
that zoom in on the fruit bar was both intriguing and disconcerting at the same time
Hés been playing with the buttons i think.
Yeah it was my favourite bit of the review, had a little giggle with that zoom

I love you Steve.
During my active medic days, i ate only the biscuits when we go for outfield training. We brought our own rations of instant noodles, canned tuna and some snacks. The smell of the meals is a turnoff.
True but from what I heard from my Teachers he said that it’s much more edible now and does not smell that bad he is still in reservist period
When were your active years?
Well there's good news before I left in April 2020. There was Ayam brand tuna and salmon spread in the accessory pack. The ration is still shit, they have a new menu now. The only edible stuff is the Hotdog and egg stew in tomato sauce.

That actually made me laugh during the video. You can hear the surprised disgust, and any normal person would just stop right there. But not Steve. No... four more bites later, THEN he quits. And actually puts the tray away to eat the rest. We mere mortals would have probably projectile vomited all over the place.
Steve ate 100 year old boar war meat and took *several* bites. So when he thinks something is gross it would probably kill a regular human
"Oh, I just hit a crunchy part."
Things you don't want to say when eating pasta.
If you hit a crunchy part onto anything that's mostly soft then you either cooked it wrong or the food is wrong
Unless it's fresh lasagna. Mmmm, crunchy cheese bits.
Looking at that bowl of peanut with lotus root reminded me of the last time I had food poisoning. And from the sounds of things, smelling the sambal chicken would have reminded me of it too.
We would have thrown the chicken at the enemy but that is banned by the Geneva Convention. Biological warfare they call it. The peanut is ok, just for the love of your intestines avoid the chicken. lol
First off, I'm not sure why it's entertaining watching someone eat rations. I have tried to watch a couple of the other ration reviewers and they rush through the boxes and don't seem like they enjoy what they are doing. I could literally watch this man eat rations for hours.
Yeah he does
Used to serve in the army and I wholeheartedly agree with you regarding the pasta. For some odd reason all of the pasta in the menus I've eaten in the army smelled really bad, and my personal worse offender was this one called Crab meat pasta. It smelled absolutely horrid but if you get pass the smell it was all pretty okay. The best items on the menus for me were definitely the stews. They mostly lack the artificial smell that the other rice and noodle rations had and having some liquid in your food during meal times made the hotter climate a little more bearable. Also regarding the chewing gum idea, Singapore pretty much banned that stuff a ways back so I doubt it'll appear in any Singaporean menus you'll find that are in an edible state. Great video tho, love seeing what others thought about the menus
Crab sounds like a terrible thing to have in an MRE for freshness
The thing with pasta is you’ve got to keep it separate from the sauce until it’s ready to serve.
@NG KAI RUI ZAYDEN crab sticks are almost never actually crab but surimi. I like to call it "general fish scrapings" but it's just good old fashioned seafood leftover mulch.

The "green packs" (the mains) are pretty infamous in that most in the service find them absolutely revolting. Many would just dig a hole and bury them or their contents if your company was one to check for rubbish. I was indifferent and just considered them a source of calories that didn't tasted salty, and not very good. There was one time I actually ate two green packs in the same meal because I was exhausted though.
The biscuits are probably the best part of the meal. Some friends of mine used to pour water into the packet and they turn into something akin to spongecake. I tried it once and it wasn't my thing, forces you to eat the whole pack at one go, and way easier to just eat it straight.
There's never any time to prepare a drink properly in the field, so everyone eats the powder directly and drink water straight after. The Gold Roast cereal mix is good shit, better than milo and pocari sweat you'd normally find.
The fruit bar is actually pretty good, especially the ones that weren't date (I can't remember what they were, Apple? Blueberry?). They were heavily rumoured to contain laxatives that force soldiers to take a dump in the field, don't know if it's true though.
Some rations come with a can of Ayam brand Tuna and a packet drink which is a luxury I've never had to the fortune of trying.
i just trade those green mains with fruit bars and those are my meal, otherwise, there's always the maggie mee + whatever can food we bring in.
Huh? Lol, I thought most in my company are actually pretty alright with the green packs. Never heard of anyone dumping away their green packs. Well, save a few people.
agreed, if anything the accessory packs are the best part of the rations - I don't ever recall mixing the powder with water, solely eating it directly from the packet :L
giving up my pink ic around end of oct!
See, I hated the fruit bar. The mains also heavily depend on what you might get. I definitely would be burying anything with beans, but I well enjoyed most of the pastas, and the rice stuff is OK but not terrible. The desserts don't really go wrong either.
I'll agree the biscuits are the bomb though

The biscuits are easily the best part of these rations. I can say the exact opposite about the dessert.
The fruit bars are good but we avoid eating them out in the field because they're for clearing your bowels. (The biscuits from what I heard have the opposite effect)
We usually just dunk the drink powders straight into our mouths and then drink water from our canteens.
We don't eat these with trays either, we eat them straight out of the bag.
