- Latvian Rations have almost double the calorie content of US MRE's, yet they're virtually the same exact size and weight. The food itself is of good quality. Once heated up, the main courses almost taste homemade. With a pack of rye bread, delicious almonds & raisins, and even a dried rice cereal, it features some excellent sit-down and on-the-go food components that really add a nice balance to the ration overall. I'd say it still has room for improvement, but all in all, it's not bad!

Same in german. Roter Hahn means Red Rooster but was often mentioned in old songs when buildings burned

As a Latvian I can say that you missed a big opportunity to put honey on the bread. That's a big thing here since it tastes amazing and reminds of childhood for most of us.

@@samblandford6858 ehh, depends on the bread and person, with as many drinks as this ration had. I’d probably use the jam on the bread, then use the honey in a drink. That is actually fairly common to put honey in things like tea

Completed basic in Latvia, some guys fron academy showed me ''emergency tea'' brew: Take a pot ( we usually keep 2 of those with water flasks), add some watter, then, from a single MRE, put those 4 cofees, the jam, the honey, the 2 packs of suggar and the tea pack. Boil it and down in. Will keep you up for some time. Tastes decent.
Also, you overcooked the pork: When you fold the stove, you fold 2 parts up and 2 parts down. You use only 1 ''tablet'' of fuel per cooking session. And you cook the pork for about 1 minute or 30secs of simmer.
A lot of the times you just put the jam in the rice porrige or one of the suggar packets and the honey on rye bread.

@@tranduong4139 I think he is being tongue-in-cheek. People seem to believe that sugar is unhealthy which I suppose it would be in large amounts on a regular basis. Of course cocaine is unhealthy.

Im Latvian and love watching your videos (i always crave to try those old cigarettes). I was so excited to see my countries name on your video and I am so glad our rations are decent and enjoyable. Those spoons are absolute trash and we use them all the time when many people have to fed. I had assumed our soldiers had better utensils, but I was disappointed. Anyways, thank you for making my day 😊
As someone who served as a Cook in the US Army, We learned a lot about field sustainment and ration science. It's been a wild experience to see what armed forces in other parts of the world have for an Equivalent to the MRE, and each time, I'm impressed in one way or another about what they provide- maybe even jealous of a few food items, but either way, You're doing good work.

Big fan Steve. Just a recommendation. You could put some water in the can, once the food is removed to deglaze it with a stir, and get some extra tasty crunchy bits and more sauce to dip the dry bread in.

They are illegal to SELL if they are issued as they are US property. If you buy them from a reputable seller, it's 100% fine
it's illegal but it isn't something that the US government can regulate because all sales are done through private transactions
Hey Anna! They aren't illegal to own just to sell and even then it's hardly enforced. Only time I hear of folks gettin popped for selling MREs is if they "fell off a truck" and it was a whole pallet. Much love back -steve
To own? No not illegal, like Steve and others said, technically the Military- contracted and owned MRE's are prohibited from selling, but again like they said that's rarely enforced unless theft is involved. When a Menu set is discontinued, the DoD usually sells them to vendors if they aren't kept in circulation until gone. There are also several manufacturers that both contract to the Military for MRE's but also make them for civilian market with the exact same components, Ameri-qual and XMRE are two of them.

Steve, I love your content but that isn't what stands out to me today. Your personality is incredibly amicable and soothing, you have a great deal of knowledge and give excellent background and history on everything you showcase but what stands out to me is how many of these comments have replies directly from you. Even if it's just a "Nice" that's some engagement you don't get anywhere else. This is a wholesome dude, doing something wholesome, and enjoying (mostly) every minute of it. I'll never stop watching.
As an ex British soldier I was told about your channel from a friend as I loved the mres when I was in during the 90s and found this video very informative and in depth so I am now binge watching your vids and wow the variety of mres u are reviewing amazing but do you think you could do an updated video of your top 10 places to buy.
Same here. These videos are strangely addictive. When I was in, in the 90's we had the tinned rations in basic and the 'new' boil in the bag after. I still buy bacon grill..

nescafe is a good brand, and it's a good alternative for militaries that may not have the budget like the DoD.
