- On this fine day, there is only one MRE that comes to mind. The return of Frankfurters - they brought 'em back after a 4 year hiatus, but with a smoked twist. And twisted it is! Buckle up, because this one is a real blast!
Introducing my new set (and an answer to where all my money has been going the last several years.. in rations. You'll see!) - forgot to put a few lamps on in there for that quick scene, though. No biggie - stay tuned a new 5 in 1 Small Detachment review coming out soon. Along with that 1918 Reserve Ration (pre-filmed now to the finishing touches) - - MRE prototypes - - K rations - - and so much more! Couldn't have done it without all of you. I am forever grateful.. Whoever was developing this MRE back in like 1992 had no idea it would ruin a man's day in 2020
More like 1982. That was back in the day when some pos industrial contractor lobbyists were forcing the govt to buy shat stuff and equipment. Issued uniform items that were not only not serviceable, but nobody could professionally wear them and other shat equipment. They won't let the Military personnel have a voice, because if we did, we would grab those oral copulators and force them to eat MRE's for 3 months straight on what they decide to make. Good news, it did improve over the years. During that last last war, Generals with a pair kicked the contractors in the junk.

I ate a lot of MREs during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina 92-95. We received them in humanitarian aid from the American people. I remember that their menus were numbered 1-24. My favorites were sweets from MREs and peanut butter, because I was a child then. They remained in my fond memory. Thank you to the American people for them.

As somone who "enjoyed" this very same MRE on operational duty in the 90s, I have to say your running commentary as you unpacked it was absolutely spot on. I swear you are a reincarnation of one of my war buddies.
I fought in the Cola Wars of the 80s (Coke, of course). Our rations were very different then.
Steve has more salt in his attitude towards this MRE than are in the crackers.

This is easily one of your funniest videos. The combination of disdain for the food, and admiration for how it's preserved, is just great. The FFD was one of the first MREs I ate as a ROTC cadet in 1995. Eating it cold was torture. Heated, it's actually not awful.

I really enjoyed that short backroom tour at the end. Gives you an idea about how serious Steve takes MRE collection and also the historical development of the MREs in general. I know it's obvious from his enthusiasm and how well informed he is, whenever he opens a ration and talks about it during videos, but it shines a more direct light on that fact, in my opinion.
Others imitate but none can duplicate steve's videos he is more entertaining and actually gives the history of his mre

For those not in the know, in the Marines, Charms are considered bad luck, a military superstition that apparently Steve also believes in that’s why he yeeted it
Now I want to know what the charms taste like. At first glance they look like any cheap chewy candy with a generic fruit flavor. Like sugar in hard-to-chew form.
this is proven in the mini series “generation kill.” they even run into “charm dumps” where everyone throws out their charms. lol.

In 1993, the mother of one of my Soldiers was a Colonel at Natick labs, and she sent us cases of experimental MREs to field test prior to them being moved to full-rate production. Included were some of these new and improved franks. Not bad. We had to fill out a feedback form and return our comments to Natick. We were proud to be part of MRE history.
Imagine if you could go back in time and write "these MREs are surprisingly prevalent, and will remain edible for twenty-seven years".

I remember this one from the late 90s. As a kid, my step dad would bring duffles full of 90s MREs from the national guard. I actually liked this one, and those fruit bars aren't too bad. The best dessert in this Era was these chocolate chunk bars they used to have. Being in today's Army, I like the MRE options, but ill always be grateful to have experienced those older menus too.
When he just chucked those charms away was hilarious. In my head I was thinking, don't you dare eat one.

You usually make me laugh a handful of times each video, but this one had so many great moments.
I did a camp out last night and made my own MRE. Bought some cheap hotdogs to chop up and have with my rice and peas. Steve would have loved it. Even took some 3 in 1 coffee sachets to complete the experience. Delicious.

Man, Steve was pissed! I have never seen him so angry at an MRE before. He ate that thing with hate in his soul and distain in his eyes. Some retiree of Natick food labs just saw this video and jumped out of the window!
So funny you mention the separate wheat bread cases. When I was a kid (7 or 8 in about '99) my Uncle a Marine, came by the house one day when I was fishing and said he had brought me something. He walked out back to the dock and set a big brown box down and told me to open it. It was literally full of those dark brown vac packs with a piece of wheat bread inside. Used that bread all summer, little pieces balled up on a hook to catch perch and brim, or just taking a few pouches ripping them up and throwing the bread in the water to get the fish biting. I can think back now at 27 and still smell that wheat bread. Memories Steve, memories. Thanks Uncle Rich.
