Are you out on a tray because you're looking nice
HunterTheGreat A+ 10/10 100%
HunterTheGreat
Nice!
Lolol
Nice flirting line ;)
lmfao
HunterTheGreat I just walked into the other room and said that to my husband and he cracked up. He loves Steve.
I had to eat these in my army days.
We almost never had hot water, so you just ate them out of their pouch. We never reconstituted anything - freeze dried stuff, eat it like a candy bar. Powdered stuff, eat it out of the pack and it will reconstitute in your mouth.
The only silverware you had was the spoon that came in the MRE - stir your food with the handle (or finger...or just knead the bag), eat with the spoon end. Most soldiers don't carry trays or mess kits, even it they're issued. They're loud and clatter when you run, and they take up valuable space in your rucksack. Your canteen cup is used to shave, spit shine your boots, and sometimes even dig -you don't want to mix food in it or drink in it.
Since hot water was not a thing we had, we would treat the coffee packets like a chew. Just pour that bad boy between your lip and gum and feel the jolt.
The beverage base powder never got mixed with water. Ever have Fun Dip? Lick your finger, stick it into the packet and then lick it off. Or just eat it with the spoon. Same went for the cocoa.
Usually, you would get your MRE with breakfast (green eggs and ham from the chow hall trucked out to your field kitchen), so the MRE would end up in your hip pocket, in your rucksack, or if you were lucky enough, inside your vehicle. Which is to say, that they were usually smashed, squashed, and crumbled by lunchtime. We would pop them with our knives to let the air out of the main bag to save a little space.
Fun fact: the creamer packets are flammable. Pour one over a lit lighter for a flash. Do it outside!
For laughs - review the toilet paper. It is too thin and you never got enough. We would bring a roll along from home (or "liberate" one from the barracks) with us in a ziplock bag when we went into the field.
Proofreading - I sound like an old man who walked uphill to school both ways.
DellFargus That was a great read sir, you made my day haha.
Somehow I always doubted soldiers had time to eat those nicely with tray and everything.
28th Division mostly.
Sounds even worse than the MCI's. At least you got cigs in those.
DellFargus - Considering this ration takes about 90oz of water(or more), I can't imagine in any tactical situation where you had any time to sit down and have a hot meal or drink. It's unrealistic that a combat ration would require so much water especially if you're out in the field or enemy territory where resources like water may be limited, let alone get a chance to have a decent meal.
"you know where you find a fig Newton like this?"
I got all excited and leaned in towards my screen.
"nowhere. "
FFFUUUU *flips table*
I laughed out really loud at that!
That one got me.
Lol that was such a good line by Steve!
Nice! 🤣
My 6 year old daughter loves your videos and absolutely LOVES it when you say "lets get this out on a tray... Nice... M-Kay"... she was so upset that you didnt say the "M-Kay" when you put it on the tray for this one. Lol. In the car she says to me "daddy, I have to tell you something... the MRE guy on youtube... I was watching a video and he didnt say M'Kay.... are you mad?" lol... she takes her MRE reviews very seriously apparently.
Great job on the videos. Her and I love them and you inspired me to grab a bunch of different kinds of MREs to try out. I have found I really like some of them.
Luke Lester Have her watch South Park, that's where he stole it from...
have a 6 year old watch south Park... ......
Nice!!
Bring her to ARMY when ur daughter's old enough.

That fruit soup looks like an emergency snack for diabetics.
Andrew Erickson Lol ice cream apple pie and DIABETES!!!!!!!!!
"die ah beetus"
dye a beat hoos
Dahbeetuss
Andrew Erickson if you've ever pulled an akio on skis or snowshoes for 12-18 hours a day you would realize that's pretty much the idea
I hope this video has all the classic Steve catchphrases; "Nice", "nice hiss", "let's get this out on to a tray", "wow that's a doozy."
Not Bad
Lightly tangy
Rancidity
Dan Williams I haven't heard "nice hiss" yet
Right off the bat
A little tip for when you are reconstituting powders, add a small amount of water first and mix into a paste, then add the rest of the water. Much quicker and you dont get lumps.
When you eat food that's your age
Alberto Hinojosa honestly there's strangely something taboo about it. A fun taboo.
Gerard Maraj Like eating yourself lol
Gerard Maraj I had never considered that, but you're right, it seems naughty.
+Devin Mathis ad ens and you wind up with the E.M.S on your way to the E.R.R
Devin Mathis ummm. no
You searched over 5 years for that ration, ate it and reviewed it on camera just for us. I respect appreciate what you do because there's no one out there that would do the same like you do. Most people probably wouldn't even open the ration if it's that rare, but you showed us and now we know. I thank you for these mre videos as they are entertaining to watch in my opinion. Hope to see more rare mre videos like this one! This one was amazing! Great video btw i really enjoyed it! Much love from Ohio brother. ☺🖒👍👏👌✌
OHIOOOO YEAAA!

@@romeohio19pointless comment 😂😂😂
@@romeohio19you sound like you’re angry about something
Especially when you consider the price he has to pay for some of these obscure rations.
Having a small collection of Great War memorabilia myself, it amazes me what collectors will pay for obscure items.
I ran across a 1916 Brunton Artillery Pocket Transit (fancy compass), for $35 at a pawn shop. The soldier had scratched his name and serial number on the case. It still functions and I've had offers as high as 10 times what I paid for it. I've no intention of selling it, as my Great Uncle was KIA on the Western Front, so I've always felt a real personal connection to the Great War.
My Uncle's that served in WW2 luckily so survived (one in Europe and one in the Pacific Theaters). My Grandfather, who was Engineer in Steel Production at CF&I, was classed as an Essential Worker. Because of that, he wasn't allowed to enlist. He remained bitter about being classified the rest of his life, as his younger brothers joined the fight.
I have no knowledge on MREs what so ever, I just find your videos very relaxing and interesting, thanks.
What exactly is he supposed to know. All they do is make a turd.
Who stuck a straw up your ass and has a sip, Rusty? JFC… 🤦🏻♂️
@rustymacshackleford6276 clearly you don't listen to the videos. He tells history on each one. If you are going to trash the content watch something else.
I get a little uneasy whenever Steve tastes old and rancid rations, but as soon as he says "nice", I totally calm down.
BTW, excellent videos man.
I ate all that stuff in 1992, Extreme Cold Weather Training USMC. I passed on the beef stew. Of course i brought a couple of cheeseburgers in each pocket. Turns out cheeseburgers are good cold. Especially when you're exposed to below zero temps for a few days in a row.
What cheeseburgers
@@beyondbackwater4933 they are like normal burgers but some bright spark put cheese on them !!!! What will they think of next !
30 years ago my god
@@danjames5552 what really gets why they call them HAMburgers without cheese when its always a beef patty
Camp LeJeune or Parris island?
When I was a child I received a WW2 24hr ration from my Grandfather. Since then I always wanted to know more about them.... then 30 years later I find you -Thanks a lot man!!!! :)
well did you eat it?
Can someone make a compilation of every time Steve says nice?
That would be nice.
Kieran Gannon Nice!
Kieran Gannon serve it up on a tray and it'll be magic

Best part!
A 27 year old fig newton fermented into perfection! Great video.. I would have never ate that.
1/3 of the stuff you eat is fermented, soy sauce = rotten soy beans. chocolate = rotten cocoa. I could go on but the list would be endless.
Alot of the food you now eat is cause they usualy discovered that the food was even better rotten than fresh.
Must admit i stuggle abit with cheese that has molded blue, but thats only in my head. Not dangerous at all.
But You eat Sauerkraut and Soy Sauce and oh yeah Drink alcohol too right?
13:00 Classic Steve!
Haha, yeah, nice cut into "nice" :D
This guy would flip his lid if he ever tried bacon.
Trap Music NOW. I can see him now cooking the bacon,
Nice hiss!!!
Trap Music Now. if he had *fresh* bacon from this year cooked normally
stabulous Koda ooooh he'd still try to cook it if it was 200 years old but gave a nice hiss
I lmao'ed thanks XD
Calm down, it's dead pig. :/
Steve, as a military veteran who has had his fair share of MRE, I love watching your videos. Thank you for the great reviews. I am however a bit jealous of your collection and the meals you can get.
Watching his videos makes me feel like im watching a tv series lol

90oz of water to rehydrate. I'd imagine using all the snow around could easily do that
Trick to using snow to rehydrate anything:
1. Do not use surface snow. Dig down a little ways and use the stuff that's between the top and the ground but nowhere near either.
2. Check for any discolouration. Algae and bacteria can sometimes grow in snow, especially if it's an old snowfall. Redness of any kind is especially dangerous.
3. Don't melt it with your body. Melt it over a fire only. Melting it with your body or consuming it while it's still solid will give you hypothermia.
4. If possible at all, use water purification methods. Boiling, chlorinating, whatever you've got. Only use it fresh if you have no other choice.
I had one with a lot date 9157. No chicken noodle soup in mine either. Loved the raspberry soup.
That was an amazing ration and a fantastic review Steve. I've been looking forward to seeing you review this one for a while. As always, you perfectly explore these things and provide such good background information. The beef stew bars are such an interesting and unique item. I'm now on a mission to create a fruit soup.
Fantastic video. Thanks man.
I hear your name in video, and boom I see your comment.
Nice!
If you manage to create fruit soup please share the recipe. That looks amazing!
I think you could probably do it with some powderised freeze-dried raspberries, some added sugar, and some added pectin powder. That's almost certainly not how they did it, but it'd give you something similar.
In sweden we make berry soup out of a berry called ”nypon” it’s so tasty and very tangy!
There is something really cool about the utilitarian aesthetic and splendor of a perfectly square carbohydrate. Like little bars of gold!
Agreed. The only thing I can think of better is a long smooth drag from a vintage mre cigerette, aged decades to a mellow and sultry perfection! #lifegoals
9:10 “Lets see if these nuts are rancid.”
..sniff..
“They smell fine.”
lol
Very dry, a little dark....
That's what she said
You should try the modern arctic MRE. We absolutely loved them when I was stationed in wainwright
I’m scared the comments Are gonna spoil if there is a hiss or if it’s Rancid so I can’t look till near the end
steve i frickin love u mate!!! you have hands down the best channel out there by a mile and i never thought i'd enjoy binge watching so much mre goodness! much love from london!
thanks for the reply steve it means a lot mate! one question for you.... I see you have done a ouple of reviews on British forces ration packs including an awesome one that stickyfingaz sent you. you ever managed to get any british rations from the 70's or before? thanks Ben
Steve1989 MREinfo Greetings from Gainesville; getting cool here.
BenniboiBadman I saw you on the german survival ration with the Monica Lewinsky comments
Steve saves me quiete often. When I'm feeling lonely, watching Steve having some fun opening and trying these MRE makes me feel better instantly; it is entertaining and kinda soothing, perfect for watching it while browsing the net or before going to bed, or in the morning. I could watch Steve everyday, 24/7. Your voice and your style are just on point!

We just had a mighty earthquake here in New Zealand and the first thing i do is jump on and watch your videos Steve! thanks for the upload
"Let's get this out onto a tray.."

I have said it before and I will say it again; You have the perfect voice and temperament for this type of video. Your knowledge of the rations and your willingness to subject yourself to their old age realities is amazing. Keep up the great videos my friend.
I always like watching Steve eat food that's older than I am.
This ration is so cool. I never knew this even existed. The fruit soup was really different. I love seeing these super rare rations! I'm so glad you are actually opening and eating these for us to see. I'll never get a chance to try all of this, so at least you take us along for the ride.
hehehhe the year i was born.....looks good so i dont feel that old anymore! thanks again for another Bossssss video
Steve! I love when you do the old mre’s and add the older vintage pictures
Once again, you deliver these amazing MRE reviews.
Never stop doing these Steve! Keep it up
"...actually I think it's pretty *jump cut* NICE!" Had me rolling xD
I'm seriously so addicted to your videos. lol I discovered them by accident and they're just so fun to watch. I practically binge watch all of them, and I still haven't been able to watch every single one of them.

Steve! I need the music, dude. It is so chill.
its very chill
*wind blows in the distance*
nice
This guy has the best intro music in the world!!
Man, there's a good handful of channels similar to yours on youtube, but I'm convinced yours is the best. Your camera work is awesome, nothing's ever out of focus and everything we need to see is always in frame. Even though this is some the driest and most boring subject matter possible, your presentation style (the soothing narration, the amusing descriptions) really makes it more interesting and engaging to watch than it has any right to be. It's a satisfying combo of "what's in the box" and "guy eats decades old canned food and describes the experience".
Three hours ago i did not even know this was a thing. But I can't stop watching. Nice.
Ah ha! 13:02
Nice!
iysaw bwahaha its like he intended it no escape

So he's self aware? Damn.
I love these videos! The rations that you find are so unique, and your knowledge about the rations is extensive! Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you for sharing Steve! This was a super interesting ration and so far one of my favorites! So glad you were able to get your hands on such a special item! 😀
we used to put the cookie bars in the soup
the way him talking about MREs just Amazing ✌ i watched every video in this channel and still enjoy the commentary
plus the "Nice" great man just keep it up
+Steve1989 MREinfo you say things that would normally be cringey but aren't cringey when you say them.
New video from Steve1989? ...Nice.
When I was in, we ALWAYS mixed the coffee, cocoa powder, creamer and sugar together. That is the only way we drank it. Or if you were low on water, you could make a pudding out of it.
moccacino or ranger pudding (with peanut butter) LOL!
The way he says nice (especially around 13:00) always gets me lmao Nice jump cut too
I have always wondered why the removed the fruit soup everyone I have talked to who had these back in the day loved it it was there favorite item
probably because it isnt that practical in the theatres we are in nowadays. freeze dried rations are killers in deserts. your water is better used elsewhere
bamarocks777 I would have assumed cost would be a bigger factor, but who knows
bamarocks777 to be fair though why would the army issue cold weather rations to troops in a desert ?
Rusty lungzs uh. we have about 50,000 troops stationed in areas termed "arctic". the small minority of troops are "in the desert"
Beef aint cheap, probably why. To much of the good stuff
I love the newer addition of putting pictures of the time where the ration is from at the beginning of the video. love the videos Steve.
I don't know how you have made MRE reviews so gratifying to watch but you have done it! Nice!
Best line, "They taste kind of natural." Love it!!!
That's funny--the "closure devices" look just like the wiring clips from a TV I took apart a while back.
What an interesting channel and very chill narrorator.
Steve at it again with making my day and what a solid review on an amazing MRE. Nice!
Fruit soup looks amazing! Great job Steve. I have had the best time following your channel.

Hey Steve! I've watched just about every single one of your video reviews... You inspired me to buy some rations online, including a Vietnam era accessory packet that I just reviewed on my channel... I'm gonna be posting more review videos in the near future... Thanks for the hours of entertainment and inspiration to try some of this stuff like you! Cheers!
Steve you always have the coolest rations. Keep up all the great vids. This is my favorite RUclips channel.
My husband started watching these while putting our toddler to bed if he was having a hard time settling down. Now he asks for "Steeeeeeeeeeve" at bedtime. He only says a few words and you are one of them 👍
I love and admire your positivity
The jump cut at 13:02 cracked me up.
Always good to see a fresh review from you Steve :) especially a RCW
Aw, thanks :)
I bet it was a treat, I also bet that left another 27 years it probably would have been fine.

Steve1989 MREinfo do you have any suggestions of a good MRE to eat I'm looking to get one
The funny thing is - with 210k subscribers - he probably gets more exposure than most food critics. He just happens to do it over a relatively new medium and has a specific niche.
Jared Miller Lol what he should do is be an official ration tester. His superiors would love him because he makes the most bland foods sound amazing.
I seriously don't know why but as soon as i see you have a new video i HAVE to take the time to watch it! Keep up the great work Steve!
My dad was stationed in Germany where I was born in 89. I'm going to ask if he ever had this ration. Soo cool! Love your channel and reviews. I have MRE's from the 90s as well as several cases from the 2000's. Never know when you need em. And it makes me confident with you eating really old ones that these will still be edible for years past their expiration date.
Question for English-native speakers: Why do some packs, like the one shown here, say "Coffee Instant" and not "Instant Coffee"?
PlasmaKong2 I think it's just a military designation. It doesn't make much more sense here.
PlasmaKong2 Seems to be a military thing, I wouldn't consider it to be proper English.
I was born in Canada and all I know is that Instant is describing Coffee so it does not matter where it is. Just Formatting. But i'm no English major.
Some sort of categorical reason I think. Like how in some cases names will be listed as Doe, John or Preston, Bill.
I think its just because the army likes to print the noun first and then all the adjectives so you can sort/find it better. "Ration cold weather" and "Meal, ready to eat" are the same".
