    Hi, served from year 88 to 91 South Korean Army. Thanks for bringing back memories, although I never tried the advanced type shown here.
    The water amount for instant coffee should be around one third of the current portion. You can still get it in stores selling Asian groceries. They come in a long disposable individual packaging and still quite popular today.
    The Military insignia on every package doesn't represent Marine, but ROK Military in general. The characters on the left and right of the insignia are the words 'GUN' and 'YONG' or 'FOR MILITARY USE'. The metallic one is exclusively for the special forces.
    The white powder on the fish jerky is Taurine, naturally emitted when drying cuttlefish or squid. It is harmless.
    Dangyeol (ROK Army slogan meaning 'unite') and good luck!

    I was regular ol' ROK Army, and we got the main dish but not any of those flashy (lol) desserts. We also didn't have any heating packs because our MREs were vacuum-packed without any freeze-drying or anything like that. What surprised me during joint exercises with US troops is that some of them realllly wanted to switch MREs with us, which was awesome because we wanted flashy desserts and Italian food. Win-win situation right there. :)
    P.S. May the alliance live long and prosper!

    • @kinagrill
      @kinagrill 2 года назад +3

      That's the funny part with something like an MRE style meal. It's more interesting and tasty to get something not 'here is what we eat our own country, just lesser quality'. Instead you can get something ELSE. Just like why people order pizzas in not-Italy :p

  • @mlovmo

    Wow. The fish you found in the packet is 취포 (chwi po), a kind of fish jerky, like you said. This is something that you cannot find in South Korea very much anymore, even the good-quality, civilian kind. The kind of fish (file fish) has basically been overfished in Korean waters, and the only kind you can find in Korea is imported from Vietnam. The Vietnamese chwi po isn't very good. I remember getting chwi po from the 1990s from the civilian market, and it was thick, savory and absolutely delicious. Koreans eat chwi po with beer, makkoli, or soju. I miss it so much.

  • @RoyRogerer
    @RoyRogerer 7 лет назад +263

    That main dish is called 비빔밥 Bibimbab, and its essentially rice, salad, meat, chilli sauce, soy sauce (sometimes), and seseme sauce. I was completely surprised to find that in an MRE as it is meant to be fresh food, not a long preserved food, haha. Anyway, Bibimbab is very commonly eaten by Koreans, so if you ever miss it, find a local Korean restaurant and order it. Since it is so simple, restaurants rarely do it wrong.
    And that fish jerky is most likely 쥐포 Jwipo, also a common snack in Korea.

    Hello from South Korea! I've been under the obligatory service during 2012-2014 in ROK Army. I'm quite surprised how good it is and how you liked it, because AFAIK welfare for soldiers was not really good at the time. The reason why it's like for cold weather is probably because they think North Korea is likely to start the war in winter, if they ever do. The fish jerky is somewhat popular as snack. The sesame bar is one of the traditional kinds of snack, not as popular but I think any Korean would eat one at least once or twice a year. I think you could easily have the main dish in any Korean restaurant. It's called Bibimbop (or Bibimbap). There are many flavors of those though.

    The main entree was 비빔밥 (bibimbap) "mixed rice". This is another quintessential Korean dish. The "seasoning pack" was probably 고추장 (kochujang) "red pepper paste," but looks like 된장 (toenjang) "fermented bean paste." See Maangchi's videos here at RUclips for recipes for Korean dishes, including bibimbap. Just from telling by her cooking style, it seems that Maangchi is from the southeastern part of South Korea, which is a quite different cuisine from the Seoul area of the country. The best ration video you've done so far, Steve!

    I finished the volunteer program at US Army Natick Labs eating only MRE's (2013 dates) for 21 days and received payment for the participation a couple weeks later after the end of the process. I'm sold on eating them as my only source of nourishment in a time of emergency or crisis that lasts a long time.

      The study is out of the U.S. Army's Natick Food labs in Natick MA. I contacted the team and went into the labs and was accepted as a test subject to eat only MRE's for 21 days. It was fun. I did enjoy the study. They only wanted volunteers who live within 50 miles of the lab. So, I qualified since I live near them. The study that I was on was a gut bacteria study while consuming only the meals and nothing else in the diet except water. No cheating or be disqualified. The collection of urine, blood and stool samples are frozen until all of the test subjects lab materials are all collected and then tested all together to gather the gut data. Should make future MRE's better for the war fighter / human digestive system. I did have to pass a security check to be allowed onto the base.

    Steve, you describe the flavors in a MRE that's literally as old as me as if it was an actual gourmet meal, lol. Honestly? You'd do great as a food judge.

    That rice dish looks like bimbimbap which is one of the most common rice dishes in Korea. It's usually served with a bunch of vegetables, meat, sesame oil and sweet Korean fermented chili paste.

      It is bibimbap c: It's written on there. Most of Korean MRI include the one on video is dried type. There was 2 option. Vegetable one and chilipaste. It was my fav whenever I went for the training, Because of those amount of food in one package.

    i can't remember the name of it, but the dried fish is awesome! full of protien and omega 3s. its like a street vendor comfort food. good for breakfast or an intermediate pick me up. the dried squid is better!

      I would've thought it was extra to be added to the main dish.
      Then again, I can't eat ramen with just what's in the pack either.

    Another great video thank you steve! I could watch these all day every day. Have you ever thought about doing other food / vintage food reviews? For some reason your videos always remind me of Ian's on Forgotten weapons .... that would be an amazing colab if yall could get together.

    Continuously fascinating what items tend to hold up better than others. It's really counterintuitive sometimes. Like, you'd think meat items would hold up the least well, and candy would hold up the best, but it's clearly not always the case.

    I'm pretty sure the main is supposed to be bibimbap, if so I wonder if it's commercially available? Also those sesame snaps look amazing, we have a similar product in Australia

      The main is labeled bibimbap, but it looks like a variation of what the Koreans call Juk, or a type of rice porridge. Source: I used to live in Korea.

      ah okay, I haven't ever been to korea, I can't read korean and I have never had bibimbap but I have heard of it, I guess its good to know that I was close?
