Candied ? That's a luxury, most Army peanuts were still in their pods !
Coming up on 30 years in Australia, and never seen a man mainline vegemite like that in my life. Pretty sure you get an automatic pass on the Australian Citizenship test if you can do that.

Wow! As a former Aussie soldier of the Vietnam years I am impressed with both the quantity and quality of these rations. The 24 hr ratpacks we carried were based on tinned concoctions which were not exactly gourmet stuff. Small tins of corned beef or mutton with the texture of meat flavored tow rope and Vienna sausages that squeaked as they were being eaten and hard crackers. Very few "extras" and only packets of "Happy Aid" sent from home made drinking water palatable. We had similar ration chocolate, but dropped into a canteen cup of boiling water turned it into a passable hot chocolate drink. I may see if I can reenlist in order to enjoy such gourmet food. No doubt, I'll be excused basic training, as my skills from 50 years ago should still be current!
Hahahaha. God you made me laugh. Imagine the moral of soldiers back then if they had this MRE in their packs.
Thank you for your service cobber 😆
Hell yeah, as long as you remember how to do drill and fire a rifle...the timing is ONE-twothree-ONE and as for the rifle...Steyr AUG or FN-FAL...the hurt-y bits come out of the muzzle; point THAT end at the enemy...Oh and when they're shooting at you, don't ZIG when you oughtta ZAG 😁

@El Jay lol yeah my wife is American - was funny watching them try it like nutella.
However, American bread is super sweet with loads of sugar, even with butter, the bread they have there makes it taste horrible - I think that's part of the reason it's not popular there, they haven't had real bread in their life.

So basically, Aussie ration is a trip to the canned and noodle isle in woolies. Cool, that really gives me a benchmark for everything in MRE lol.
Good on you Aussie gov for buying bega.
When I was in the Australian Army Cadets, our school would hold an Annual Field Training excercise once a year, and for five of the seven days we were given ration packs that were bought from surplus army stock. I remember always trading for the barbecue beef meal, not because I liked the food itself, but because it had rice with it and I was driving myself inside by day 2 without rice with my food. (I am Korean if you are curious, hence the desire for rice lol)
Same here, but the best was collecting the condensed milk from my sweet averse friends and just putting it on everything... Pity I'm lactose intolerant now

@@Rodney-fs8kx I was a scout/rifleman with 31 RAR Charlie Company. I really enjoyed my time serving and kind of regret leaving. I joined when I was very young and was still indecisive about my future. I was a crack shot (topped my recruit class) and would often go shooting during the week. I owned an SKK (7.62 mm with 30 round banana mags) a semi automatic assault rifle similar to an AK. Of course when the gun laws came in after Port Arthur I had to turn it in. I joined in 1993 and was part of the last recruit class to train with the old SLR. Shortly later they brought the Steyr in and we had to qualify with those. I also trained with the M60 machine gun and the Bren. I think, they bought in the minimi a bit later. Thank you for your service. Hope you’re doing well.

For someone who served, I imagine being temporarily attached to one of these units and having to eat what they do. Some of these rations and the individual items are really good.
Never realised how much of the Australian CR1M is sourced from New Zealand. ADF & NZDF work closely together, so perhaps not that much of a surprise. I was looking out for which products were made in the DSTO facility at Scottsdale (Tasmania) which I've had the pleasure of visiting and being shown around. If you're looking for a good Australian doco-series on the sorts of survival foods that can be found in the bush, mixed in with some good history, I can thoroughly recommend "Bush Tucker Man" - hosted by an ex-ADF Major who made survival and survival foods part of his career. Despite no MREs being featured, it's superb viewing.

From personal experiences (from 1994 to 2011) ration packs had major improvements.
Still, after a few days they all clog you up.
Love the way he separated them for breakfast lunch and dinner. Personally didn't really have the time to "enjoy" just get something into your gut as quick as possible lol. Most of the time you would only have time to boil water. Eat the main meals cold and not on a plate straight out of the package. The way he ate the Vegemite was how I and many soldiers would eat it, for the same reasons he mentioned. ADF rations don't come with self heating devices so a small stove and heximine tablets would be issued as well. Hence the reason why many times you either don't have time to heat them up or for tactical reasons you just couldn't so all meals were designed to eat cold. I used to make "bush twisties" with the noodles just crush them in the package sprinkle some flavours on them and crunch them down lol. Atleast ration packs gave me an appreciation of "real food"😜
@M G There was fibre. Each ration pack contained enough protein, fibre, carbs etc for a person to sustain themselves for 24 hours. Ration packs and meals were designed for the body to absorb as much as it could, this meant there was a little "clogging" of the system. It takes between 24 and 72 hours for your body to digest and get rid of a meal. You hardly notice if you're eating everyday. Yes, taking a poo can be a risk. But pretty much everything is a risk in an area of operations🙂 also, when you're stressed or your body isn't getting those 3 square meals, it slows down digestion. Thus ration packs need to be filled with all the goodness a body can absorb.
I’m from Indonesia. I cried looking at you preparing that instant Mi Goreng. 😅
Me too but I'm from Australia

Yeah Mi Goreng is an Indonesian noodle dish very popular in here in Australia. You add the flavours and oil/sauces AFTER you boil and strain the noodles. It's NOT A BROTH. As for why, well it ruins the taste of the entire dish. The noodles are supposed to be oily with the sweet taste of kepap manis and chilis. I always boil an egg in mine and eat it with that.

Bro, This is the Best MRE ive ever Seen, Steve had it all, Sweet Lord!!!!
you sir are the Bob Ross of MRE's. Your voice won me and my wife over as well as your accurate and unbiased testing.
After eating so many 40+ year old rations, that must have tasted like an emperor's banquet!
Steve and sweetened condensed milk: an astronomically better love story than Twilight.
This ration is lightweight, calorie dense, and looks absolutely delicious and filling to eat. You could really learn a thing or two from Australia. They don't mess around with their food, apparently.
Our local conditions vary from desert to jungle, even snowcaps in winter in the mountains. We have most of the worlds most poisonous creatures, and even the 'cute' stuff like the good old platypus has poison claws which cause excruciating pain for days if pricked by them. Our population is very small compared to most other nations, too, and one of our founding moments as a nation was being slaughtered at Gallopoli during WWI in horrendous conditions with meagre rations and worse morale.
Its no surprise that we try and give our military the best so they can be the most effective during operations.
@@boingkster I remember that WWI Australian MRE's were basically just hardtack and dried out biscuits which is become to be known as ANZAC biscuits but it didn't taste very good back then.
@@luminatrixfanfiction almost but not quite. The troops survived on tinned beef, rice, jam, cocoa, tea, hard tack and little else.
Anzac biscuits were a luxury sent from home. They consist of 1 cup each plain flour and rolled oats, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup coconut, 150g butter, 2 tablespoons golden syrup or treacle and a half teaspoon bicarb soda.
They were one of the few food items that were able to survive the long voyage to the other side of the world and still provide some comfort in the dismal trench conditions.
Cook some for yourself and remember the ANZACs, and all military veterans.
@@luminatrixfanfiction I asked some old guy at work how those Anzac biscuits got the name. Bloke said its because those biscuits were hard af and soldiers used to throw them like shuriken darts after they ran out of ammo.
This is one of the best MRE Channels I have watched.
The sweetened condensed milk is great for just keeping in your webbing as a snack for when you're marching or dug in. And the cheese is for constipating yourself when you're not gonna be able to go to the bathroom for a while
Tom Culley and the Chocolate clears the pipes when your back at base
Tom Culley -- Who needs the Cheese , when you're in a fire-fight the 'Pucker Factor' solves that problem for you .
Those sweetened condensed milk tubes go for a lot out field, people trade smokes, noodles, and chocolate for those tubes of goodness
one guy traded me a jacklinks bar and m&ms for a tube
What do you use it for?
No you crazy dude!!!!!!
I'd rather have the chocolate.
This is probably the most appetizing mre I’ve seen yet! If there is any better looking / tasting one lmk
I like how every time Steve has oatmeal or cereal likes he’s like “ It’s nice, not too sweet…”
When given condensed milk he’s like “ Yeah totally not sweet at all needs some of that condensed milk” 😂
"Sweetened condensed milk" will be the answer to any question from here on...
digitalwerker get yourself a vietnamese coffee with condensed and ice. You wont regret it.
That sounds like some manner of rice pudding which I am absolutely down for.
I was waiting for him to add it to the processed cheese spread.
no no -sweetened condensed flowers?!
