I love how Steve never changes the way he does reviews. He doesn’t jazz them up to get more views and I hate RUclipsrs who change the way they make videos. That’s why I love Steve’s reviews. Once again thanks Steve for another great review.

Thanks Hank! I try to stay consistent. Now I may be doing a camping video - don't worry it will still be on a tray. It may or may not work out but when it comes to doing anything different for a slight and occasional change that would be about it. Thanks again man and see ya on the next one!

The prob;em with those canned foods is that you cant actually heat them on fire. We did it in the army and no one told us not to cause no one knows. The cans are lined with plastic and are toxic when heated. Instead, just pop the lid to a hiss and boil it in the water in a canteen. Heats evenly and is safer plus the food wont burn.
Cool reviews as always. Let me know if you want to try an Estonian ration.

Belarusian food products in Russia are considered much better than local ones, because in Belarus there are still have Soviet ГОСТ quality standards (ГОсударственные СТандарты or State Standards) that describe the composition and technology of products and the deviation from which is seriously punished if it declared on the package. Therefore, the quality of Belarusian food is much less affected by cheap substitutes for natural ingredients. So, for example, choosing between Russian condensed milk or pate and Belarusian one, more often choose Belarusian. Sorry for Google Translator.

I found shredded newspaper in some of the store bought/packaged food I bought in Russia. Near the same time an associate of mine cracked his tooth on a rock contained in cereal from a packaged/sealed/labeled box. Oh, and don't drink anything from those thick glass bottles as they are easily re-purposed and sealed/re-capped by anyone.

    • @kirya312
      @kirya312 6 лет назад +18

MetaLexxer they were actually reused in ussr, because there was two types of bottles - brown for beer and lemonade and transparent for stuff like milk. But now I think its not possible, because every company has their own bottle. I live in russia and the worst thing i ever seen in food was an olive with pit that break my father’s tooth.

4 year old comment but it's worth mentioning for any future people that see this too, in the Belorussian military, just like the Russian military they are issued and carry 3 piece mess kits still, just like in Soviet times. It's a cooking bowl lid and pan, you wouldn't cook any of these in the can, they would be dropped into the mess kit and stirred, so you would end up with even cooking and no burnt bits. You then would eat from the mess kit instead of a tray.

"You get" a calm delivery, with an "undertone" of low tone, the video production is "nice", the audio has a "nice hiss", occasionally the "main" subject is "rancid" and "tongue numbing", but, usually, the result is "the best ration ever". It is a member of the Vaccinium genus of plants, specifically Vaccinium vitis-idaea which include cranberries, blueberry, and huckleberry. It grows in the northern hemisphere and is popular in the US, Scandinavia and Russia (and surrounding nations). Hope this info was useful. Cheers from frozen Ohio!

Kisel is like an offshoot of jello but it is liquid. Can be quite dense though, depending on how much water you use. In Poland it is mostly served in pre-highschool or primary schools but adults eat kisel as well. It is always a cheap dessert but just with creme freche or fruit chunks it can get really delicious and savory.

That soft bone deal is what you get from a quality French cassoulet or duck confit. They are usually cooked twice - once in the big stew pot, and again in the can at high pressure once the cans have been sealed up. The duck legs still have the bone in them, but usually it is so well cooked that the bone just crumbles when you bite into it. A bit like when you get canned red salmon fillets which also usually have the bones still in them - they are pressure cooked in the can too, so the bone has the consistency of wet chalk. One major advantage of this kind of cooking is that the calcium content of the bones is far more bio-available: The mineral component of bone is calcium phosphate, which your stomach acid reacts with to form calcium chloride, which is very water-soluble so you absorb pretty much all the calcium. A bit like when you take an antacid tablet - these are usually calcium carbonate, which also becomes calcium chloride in your stomach by a similar reaction, so eating antacid tablets is a cheap and effective way of boosting your calcium intake if you need to.

Steve great job, it must be really cool being able to sample military combat rations from
all over the world. It's amazing that this small country on the other side of the world that didn't exist when I was a Paratrooper in the mighty Airborne Infantry is able to make an MRE that's appealing to the eye, but also tastes far better then any of the canned U.S. C-rations (except for Chicken or Turkey Boned & Ham and Eggs chopped). In addition the cans don't require a P38 to open them. I have a very funny story that involves British combat ration sausages, a field expedient stove, a German Mann truck, an Iraqi anti tank ditch and an Iraqi land mine. I'm a subscriber, if that helps. its about 0315HRS so I'll type it to you when I find one of your new videos, if you'd like to hear it. I like how you appreciate the food just as you're in combat. I think if you stirred the Beef and buckwheat it wouldn't have burnt on the bottom, although the can was pretty full. love the videos.

This hit home in a good way. Both my parents born in USA but my paternal grandparents were White Russian (Byelorussian -- "BeloRussian" as Steve gives it doesn't give correct pronunciation). Now, I'm old, so my granddad as a calvary officer in the tsar's army, but somehow he got posted to a Cossack regiment. Cossacks aren't Russian, ild tribesmen from southern steppes so I don't know how my White Russian grand dad wound up serving with them. He did bring his cavalry sword over to US and presented it to my dad, not the oldest of his four sons.
Cossacks were used to bloodily put down 1905 Russian Revolution and we always wondered if granddad swung it to quell the revolt. Family history says he decided to get out after that 1905 slaughter. He never talked about it but was proud of having been a soldier. He even did a tour guarding tsar's family and an aunt recounted how he loved bouncing all the tsar's children on his knees. He and his wife were safely over by 1910. Tsar's kids all butchered by Lenin after 1917 Revolution.
Glad he got out. Nazis obliterated White Russia to the ground. Doubt any family records survive, as opposed to our Italian side, where good church records kept of births, marriages and deaths, A brother traced our Italian side to 15th century. White Russian records burned and smashed by Nazis, who considered we Slavs sub-human.
All brought back by this ration pack. Thanks much, Steve.

Seen you do so many now with items like the Kissel and knew you were gonna like it. My polish friend's wife drinks it like a hot soup, but I enjoy it as a chilled Jell-o like dessert.

The color red has been shown to increase appetite. When you want soldiers to eat under stressful conditions, every little bit helps.

"Oh look at that nice crispy ring on the bottom." I admire your positivity, but I think you misspelled "burnt".
