2017 Finnish 24 Hour Combat Ration MRE Review Meal Ready to Eat Taste Testing

- Опубликовано: 31 окт 2018
- This Finland 24 Hour Ration is a mostly vegetarian cold weather MRE. It's fairly lightweight for the 4,100 calorie content, but the menu variation is lacking. Still not a bad ration and worth trying out once for the pate and crisp bread alone.

Here in finland we call the military food yellow and hot, because it doesn't matter what it is, it always boils down to that. It's yellow and it is hot, and pretty much always tastes the same. But its energy so theres that, I guess.

I love how the American stuff is all generic but the stuff from over seas just looks like stuff you grab at a corner market before a camping trip lol.
In finland u actually can buy all those from a store
I believe that a lot of countries use 'shop' style packaging even if the packets are dedicated military food. The market research says soldiers prefer it to drab olive generic packaging
Finnish food look literaly like shit but its still better then a cheese burger
Land of the free home of the bland
It seems like the smaller the country the more non-generic stuff they have in rations. I imagine it's a combination of the militaries not having the extra budget to spend on development of rations and the economies not having the capacity to specialize in such products.

For those wondering the "civilian" look of the rations:
Every single piece of these rations can be picked up from a well supplied Finnish supermarket. There is no separate military MREs, as demands of non-deployed force of around 30,000 are rather low. So instead civilian suppliers are used. Makes it also easy for reservists to get "war-time" supplies for their hobbies.
This also has a massive national security bonus: 99% of wartime forces are made up of reservists (Finland has universal male conscription). In times of crisis, the FDF would balloon up to atleast 280,000 strong field army, largest in the EU. By using civilian products, the society can divert these products exclusively to the FDF. This means no need to boost MRE production by factor of 10, but using existing production lines and maybe boosting those slightly. Civilians will get the "wet" food and those that can't stand field conditions. (This is speculation and one of "could-be-done" situations, haven't seen official info on this!)
Also, regarding usage of MREs in the field:
-Not sure how this is in the instructions, but mixing the porridge is a must. Even once during the heating, after the initial stir. Not doing this seems to be a common mistake.
-Energy drinks are meant to be mixed in 1L canteens. The drink is to be consumed over longer period of time. Though naturally one would drink more during dinner, but not a liter at a time.
-The contents change every 5 or so years. My rations had same pate, bread and hand sanitizers. Everything else is different.
Was just thinking how much the 'civilian' look of the rations will spoil the camouflage of the soldiers when they're eating outfield
@@lzh4950 Yeah enemy snipers always look for the blue fucking cocoa bag instead of the bright FDE colored one in the green forest. /s

I have to say my favorite videos that Steve makes are when he reviews the 24 hr rations. They are usually a much more interesting ration because there are so many different components to them. Plus it’s interesting to see what other countries consider the best kind of foods to feed a serviceman in a 24hr period. Because like they say “An army marches on its stomach”.
The best kind of foods?!
You mean the cheapest.. 😅 😂 🤣
@@Ricardo-cl3vs you know this "Leader" crap is actually expencive as hell. After FDF discounts it's probably a 4-5€ a meal and the food of the angels they serve in mukes is waaay cheaper.

braaap 509 I hope her first words are "Nice hiss !"
As a conscript currently serving in the Finnish army I can say these rations are horrible. We never have enough time to heat up water for the main courses nor wait for them to be fully rehydrated. Most of us just eat the crispbreads, pate and nuts and resort to bringing our own food with us, mostly tuna. A can of tuna can be eaten in a minute while fully preparing a pouch meal takes like half an hour. Previously the rations consisted of canned food and weighed more but what good does the reduced weight do if you don't have time to boil water for the freeze-dried meals?
Last week we had a 5 day exercise and I only ate 4 meals.
I'd say that's just simply a fail on the part of your Platoon leaders and instructors. Our platoon had plenty of time to eat, and some instructors actually emphasized the importance of being well-fed. If the rest of the platoon is busy doing their chores, a couple/few men should be assigned to prepare meals for the rest of the unit.
Well you have it "better" than we old timers in other senses. FDF is not what it used to be so you have to have at least some discomfort.
Sounds more like a time issue rather than a food/package-design issue...
Onhan nämä parannus siitä että kaikki pitäisi valmistaa siinä kolerapakissa.
You can add cold water to the pouch and wait longer. If you know you are not gonna have enough time to boil and wait you could do that. Or get less sleep and eat it when you have time to sleep. That's what I did.

Man this gave me anxiety, i miss my service a bit, but i don’t miss these XDD making that porridge in the morning with -30c. Fuck that 😂
in alot of nordic countries we eat very dark and dense bread, the "whole grain crisp bread" is called knækbrød in danish and is very popular in denmark. Great video steve!
NICE! Why do I keep watching these when I'm hungry? Keep it up Steve.
I did my service if the FDF in 2006, the MREs were very different back then. We didn't have any of those "just add water in the bag" foods. Instead we got some basic porridge flakes and noodles you had to cook in your mess tin. In the forest we never had time to cook anything so I was always hungry, those crispbreads and the paté (which came in a tin instead of a handy tube) and the chocolate were pretty much the only things I ate out of those MRE bags. Sometimes I ate the noodles dry without cooking them because I was so hungry. Those MREs sucked big time. These newer ones seem better, I guess you could hydrate them with cold water as well.
There's a saying in the FDF, "in a hurry to wait". It was always the same when we were out in the woods. Someone came to wake you up and told you have 5 minutes to put on your gear and pack your stuff and to take a leak, and then we'd wait 30 minutes, not allowed to do anything because something was just about to happen or start. And when you did happen to have some time, you didn't have a portable cooker or other source of heat because those cookers weren't issued to everyone.
I don't see the problem. Eat your meal before you sleep.
I didn't have issues with this in the military.
@@incumbentvinyl9291 There was no free time to do what you like in the evenings either. We'd get back to our tents late in the evening after a full day of practicing something and then ordered to go sleep. The only thing you were allowed to do is to go take a leak or poop.
Luckily I became a military police and as such had very few "forest camps" (training multiple days somewhere in a forest) as we call them.

I recall mixing the 2 sports drinks into one bottle to create something palatable.
I also recall longer hydration times than what was specced in the meal instructions.
In my military time (early 90's) we got 18 slices of the bread and a can of paté and also a can of cheese spread. The meals were then canned soups mostly.
I did the same with those sport drinks. Put 2 into the 1L bottle and taste was good with only 1 it's too bland. Ate those mre meals with hot tap water when I was in sick tupa cuz we only got 2 normal meals and then those.
Steve's videos always have the most wholesome comments
I love the sound of your voice, this is the first video I’ve watched of your channel. You have just gained a new subscriber
In the field at night the trick is to carefully open the top of the bag and dump everything out.... then put what you're going to have for breakfast the next morning in a pile.... convenient that you can reach it in the morning..... what you're going to have for supper later goes in the bottom of the bag.... then you roll the bag over on itself ONCE .....so you have a new bottom to the bag..... now you fill it with everything you want to have for lunch.... which should be everything that's left .....then you roll it again on itself and you have a nice neat package that goes in your pack and everything is organized for that day
The apple cinnamon porridge mixes better when you use HOT water and I can promise you when it's time to eat it... you cut off the top and drink it right from the bag without having to look at it because it looks nasty
I salute you my friend for your patronage and bravery

Yummy that bread is called Ryvita in the UK and it was one of my favourites back in the day.
In 2016 we had the "main meals" By blåband or something like that. I found them way enjoyable, I had these new sets on my last training session before being released to reserves and they were so bad compared to the predecessors
Spent last year eating tens of those rations. Those green pasta meals are terrible. There are like 6 or so different rations and some of them come with the red blåband meals, which are much better. I have a lot of those green meals at home and don't know what to do with them, I'd rather die of starvation than eat 1 more.
Agree. The green ones are lowcost you can get at ÖoB in Sweden..
Well three years ago those blåblands where considered horrible shit. I had like 20 those in my locker and just threw them somewhere when we went home.
Donate them to a local food bank. I'm sure someone who is actually starving would be happy to have them.

Hello people, I am glad you reviewed my rations.
Be awesome to see Steve’s list of top 20 best rations 😃
great show man,, always gets my appetite going lol
Some ration packs come with shredded tuna, I think it replaces the protein bars if I remember correctly. Mexican cassarole and pasta carbonara are also possibilities within these rations, and of course, soy-based. Sometimes the crisp bread is replaced with weird french flour-free crisp bread that is pretty tasteless but comes in a cardboard box, so it's not all smashed up at least.
You should make audiobooks cuz you have a great voice that I enjoy listening to 😊
Being A Vet, I love seeing rations served on a tray. All mine were served straight from a pouch. Good job. 😀👍
