- A true shelf stable food journey, this incredibly advanced ration used by British recon in Burma 76 years ago truly stood the test of time. A rare look at what is pretty much the British K Ration - and easily the most innovative and pioneering of individual rations for WW2.
I saved most of the leftovers for my own personal display, but did gift the extra tea can to someone who is currently selling it. More information on that below in a shop link.

And the ability to detect it by scent ..
Self preservation…
If by hobby you mean his main modus operandi yes
Nice
Don't forget that he also developed a tobacco addiction

Steve has made me appreciate my food so much more. I was eating a fruit cocktail once and I can just imagine Steve saying "Its in a nice light syrup with a very inviting and pleasant smell to it. Always a nice addition to this type of ration."
Yes it's had that effect on me . I was only the orther day commenting to myself about the prevalent chocolate taste in a cheap cookie .
This fruit cup was packed in Georgia in 2022 back when they mostly used corn syrup. You can really taste the Georgia peaches in this one. Imagine the morale boost it would give, plus all the energy you are refueling.
I always comment when I open a can of something "nice hiss" 😂

I love the fact that Steve opens these, records and tries out the contents. It is tempting to think of it as something that should be in a Museum but I'm inclined to suggest that there are plenty such examples in Museums all over the world and that it's far more rare to see the contents, nevermind try it out and therefore I'd argue that Steve has made an Audio/Visual museum for us all, not to state the obvious intentionally.
He usually also tries to buy two of every ration, especially older ones like this, so he can donate the other one to a museum!
Often the museums only want the containers/packaging/empty washed tins for safe display purposes, which is why in many videos Steve opens containers from the bottom and purposefully saves packaging to donate to museum displays... But these videos are far more than you could ever get from a display! Plus it reaches people that would likely never see these because they didn't visit such a museum... Both are important ways to preserve history, and Steve helps with both 👍 Steve is definitely a great man for his studies, presentations, and preservations of this very important, often under appreciated history 👏
Thanks for stating the obvious
@@SteenSpinal4LIFE Are you really so devoid of a life that this was a worthwhile comment to make? I think you need to evaluate your life son. Nice talking to you.

I love it when Steve finds cigarettes. I don’t smoke anymore but seeing the different design philosophy is interesting. Plus, he’s very good at pinpointing flavors and notes. It feels like I can taste what he’s describing.
Also fun to imagine what it might have been like having a hard and terrifying day, having only that smoke to look forward to.
I think Steve is the only guy on the planet that can make smoking not only look cool, but seem like an event, rather than a force of habit; I’ve met way too many people who smoked cigarettes, and not many of them seemed to actually enjoy it, or could even describe the flavor/aroma of the cigarettes they buy.
I do love the smell of pipe tobacco though. A good, quality tobacco smells sweet, somewhat fruity (like raisins), and just reminds me of my grandfather before he had lung issues and had to stop, shortly after I was born.
My grandfather also served as a field medic in WW2, and while I don’t think I ever saw him hold a cigarette in any pictures, I can imagine with the hell he saw and went through on a minute-to-minute basis, a cigarette would have been a luxury, in any downtime - same with everyone else on the fronts.
"I will keep them in-tact" is the Steve way of saying "I ain't eating that!"
:'(
He does it primarily for the packaging if its hard to get he would rather have it sealed
You know it can't be eaten if Steve refuses to! I understand he's torn between his desire to eat the rations that soldiers of significant historic periods ate or risk getting sick. Who knows how much he's paid for these rations that might be rancid?
@@davestuddert4392 I honestly think half of his enjoyment comes from the act of opening the ration.
Welcome back.
The reason Steve takes so long for these reviews is because he has to go on long Indiana Jones style adventures to hunt down these rations.
And I would not be surprised. These rations he manages to get must be rare and expensive to get.
Spending a couple grand per unit
My favorite movies.
I have bunch in my basement collecting dust from when father was in Vietnam.

I love the way Steve describes the epicurean and aromatic delight of each meal component, even though any one of them could contain enough toxins to devastate a small town.
Right? I've never wanted to eat decades old expired food so badly.
His gravestone could say “I THOUGHT those ham & beans tasted funny!” 😕
You've got to love the way Steve opens a 75+ year old can of meat with the same enthusiasm as Steve Irwin confronting a King Cobra.
That’s why both men are the very best at what they do. We mere mortals don’t deserve this excellence.

@@uncleruckus6692 you’re right I was thinking that. Bc after so long and with pressure and time the rations sit sometimes, there should be some hiss I would think. 🤔 no hiss 🧐

@@sankujamatia525 Many likely felt that joining them was their only way to survive. The things the japanese would do to their captives... disgusting. But not all of them that did those horrific things were psychopaths which is scary because that means that one with a healthy mind can become corrupted over time and do things they never would have done years before they started to rot. Who would you be if you climbed out of what felt like a century in absolute Hell seeing an endless barrage of suffering, seeing so much death, your best friends dying they're mutilated corpses all the while you're fed propaghanda telling you who to blame? You might start to believe them and may even want to do worse to them than what they did to your friends. That anger although misplaced in reality, in their detoriated emotional adrenaline fueled state of mind it makes a lot of sense. Barely anyone knows who they would become if they were put through absolute Hell, so do not presume, in a developed society of abundance in comparision to literally every other country to ever exist, that most human being are in default good in nature. We all enjoy these in the moment, but realistically, these videos are important historical documents. I'm really glad he's dissecting and literally pulling apart these rations. Instead of just relying on historical accounts, we get to witness them actually being used. There's a distortion with them being opened decades later in some instances, but the value here is far greater than seeing them in a museum or reading about them in a book. Thank you.
Very well put my friend!
Spot on. Saved for all time.

Every time you review a vintage MRE it amazes me... It's just mind boggling how these rations managed to survive much more than those who were meant to consume them
Makes me wonder why they dont seal them this way anymore. None of ours will last as long.(u.s)

The lack of that hiss is worrying because now you have to figure out how edible the food is or if at all
Steve never fails to dissappoint, his passion is an honor to behold.
I don't know why or what brought me to your channel, but I'm glad I'm here, never had any interest in MREs but your calming, optimistic demeanor is relaxing to watch/ listen to.
Steve's MREs were finally retrieved from a cargo ship off the coast of California!
Lol
Right. He had to swim out, knife between the teeth and save them.
Jen Psaki and Bidumb wouldn’t let the MREs in because they could have a historic time traveling mega bovid virus in them that will kill anyone who gets infected with it
@@maximilianavdeev7363 Brovid virus gets sick from a case of.... Steve!
SteveMRE in a nutshell:
Steve: “I’m not gonna eat that.”
5 minutes later…
Steve: “Alright I’m gonna eat it.”
By this point he can't help himself
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣
A great ration and very nicely reviewed. I always use a regular side opening tin opener to preserve the tins for display.
Steve’s choice of words when describing the things in these MREs is what really makes these videos so special in my opinion. He has such a descriptive way of describing flavors and smells, it just makes you feel like you could fully imagine what he’s tasting and smelling in that moment. I know there’s other channels in this genre but no one makes the quality of video like Steve!! It would be so interesting to hangout with him for a day and just talk about all the different things he’s tried and experienced since he’s been doing this sorta content.
Steve won't admit it but he was the guest of a sketchy government lab where he was infected with all manner of diseases. Interesting enough, the diseases screamed and begged not to die as he was injected. I even heard he gargled with COVID and bragged its got nothing compared to dried meat from some some Roman Era excavation that tasted like chicken. Truly a hero, we missed you buddy!
I'm not sure I would brag about surviving a virus with a 99.997 percent survival rate.
@@Mw2Skuxx good point but give Fauci and his handlers some time, they'll ramp it up when the sheep stop bleating.
@@Mw2Skuxx COVID is truly the pandemic for these times, where fear culture rules over all.
@@Mw2Skuxx even if that statistic was true which it isn’t with the amount of people it’s infected that’s millions dead still a major problem
@@QuigleTheGnome what's the real fatality rate?
I wonder when Steve will open a +75 year old ration only to find that the tin of Ham & Eggs has gained sapience and starts attacking him.
Why do you think he is so well built? Steve's ready
sentience*
why you think our mans built like a space marine? he's ready for whenever something tries to face hug him
Note there is a higher chance he eats a meat biscuit and thinks the spam is attacking, while fighting the table cloth.
Great one, Steve. Like you said, great way to immerse yourself into a facet of WW2.
Bru , cant believe you actually open and show us these treasures ... we love it
Steve: lifts up a spoon of meat. "What, you thought I was actually gonna eat this?"
His fans: yes 😂
exactly 🤣
Past Steve totally would have tried that! But he’s had too many scares, and actually ended up in the hospital once iirc, so I can see why he’s changed his ways.
Pretty sure it would be 'His Majesty's Forces' in 1944. Queen Elizabeth II took the throne in 1952 - her father was King during WW2.
Great to have you back Steve!
The soul transfer ritual the royals do makes his/her interchangeable. It's all the same person.
@@warlockengineer You mean like Dr Who?
Years ago I was able to read all the comments on one of Steve's videos. Those days are long gone.
I hope you're doing ok Steve! Looking forward to another awesome video!
Hearing him say "hmm, nice hiss" while muffled in a gas mask just made my year 😂
Thanks for another great video!
after somking a 70 year old cigarette with poison nicotine etc

Steve1989: The only man who _has to_ look at his food under a microscope.
And it looked back at him
Now i’m rewatching all your videos because they’re so good
These rations have kept you in glorious shape. Your skin is flawless, your expertise and senses are on point. Super tuned engine!
I love how dedicated to this he is that whenever he's unable to taste something, you feel his disappointment.
“That things 76 years old and it’s just floating in my kitchen sink…”
This is such a fascinating sentence.
This is so cool. Like. I know it’s “just” a ration. But this is the food that kept heroes fueled up. It kept soldiers fighting. It was vital to the war effort.
And you’re getting to eat them?
That’s SO cool man.
I envy you. That must have cost a fortune.
HOLY CRAP AND THEY ARE IN SUCH GOOD CONDITION
Oh man I bet those cigs could sell for a BUNCH of money.
I hope they were all amazing
It’s both amazing and sad that the foodstuffs were inedible. The fact they put so much quality in to the rations with stuff like lots of butter, real dried milk, high quality food content that wasn’t processed. It’s really good that they had good meals. They certainly deserved them.
Nnnnn and you got to eat 76 year old Cadbury chocolate. I bet that was delicious. I’d be so interested to taste then and modern Cadbury chocolate. So jealous
Dude is talking to himself. I think the MRE’s are getting to him
@@billyboymgee1729 i assume he was just commenting as he was watching the video lol
Been watching Steve all night while I plan a 4 day bushcraft trip, and I'm inspired. Gonna do the whole 4 days with MREs only.
My great grandfather served in burma in WW2. Thankyou steve for giving me an insight as to what he most likely would of been eating during his time there. ❤
Every time Steve uploads a new video I am not only excited to see his new content, but I am also relieved to know he was not taken from us from the previous ration he consumed.
Right?! 😂
This made me laugh out loud
This man has a stomach of pure steel
I know rite
Steve is the gastronomic equivalent of Evel Knievel.
“Just stale grain and slightly rancid oils, and that’s okay…” God bless you Steve, and keep on keeping on.
Put that on a T-Shirt!
I really appreciate that you really enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Being alive and experiencing things is really neat. “Buy a ticket, take the ride”-HST
This has to be one of the most fascinating videos I’ve ever seen. Thanks for sharing
